September 7, 2005—Science never sleeps, even when facing down a hurricane. Luckily for a handful of deep sea explorers, they've found a rather unusual nightlight.

This still photo from a video taken on August 22 shows the first visual evidence of the fluorescent chain catshark. Scientists taking part in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Operation Deep Scope 2005 expedition found the three-foot-long (one-meter-long) animal on the sea floor of the Gulf of Mexico.

The fluorescent shark was initially observed—though not captured on film—during last year's Deep Scope expedition. Starstruck researchers noted that the glowing menace bears an uncanny resemblance to the fictional jaguar shark pursued by Bill Murray in the 2004 movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

Very interesting link, GD! It made me shudder just a little bit. My Dad and I actually just had a HUGE discussion on sea monsters the other day. He was the one who told me about this squid. Then, he told me to google sea monsters and look at some of the creepy stuff that comes up. So, I did!

I'm actually reading about sea serpents while I post. I just finished reading all about the masbate monster, which I had to be honest, at first glance, read as "masturbate monster" to me. The masturbate monster does exist, that I know. I think they call him "ex-boyfriend". :D

Don't tell me you dated him, too?! Did yours make frequent visits to the office restroom during the workday?

HOLY COW! I pulled a Carlie (thank you! :) ) and CHOKED! Um, I think we SO dated the same guy- Mr. mid-afternoon "break". :D

I love how this thread has transformed. From man-eating squid to masturbation. Everything comes full-circle. We need an ex-boyfriend thread- STAT.

Until then, I'm sharing my new favorite site. Because I've become a sea monster addict...

Monsters Of The Deep

Dig on the Viperfish. That's some creepy ass sh*t. :(

Oh! And more ex-boyfriend talk. ANYTIME. :)
