Absolutely unbelievable, these people are. I swear, they could figure out a way to show that a tree is promoting homosexuality.

Well, you know some trees have both male and female blossoms on the *same* tree...

And the trunks are kind of phallic...

Yeah, I'm basically wondering WTF?

I haven't watched it since my sisters stopped watching it.

I'll have to look into the story later, the link you gave is asking me to register, and most video feeds never work for me, so I'll miss that section, certainly.

Anyone with a sneak preview on how they're saying Spongebob promotes homosexuality? I'm just curious...

SpongeBob - who appears on the children's cable channel Nickelodeon - is seen as an icon for adult gay men in the US, apparently because he regularly holds hands with his sidekick Patrick.

His creators deny that he is gay, but he is not the first such character to cause controversy.

Gotta love those "F*ckups on the Family" people.

Oh, wait a minute. No I don't.

For laughs, I sent FotF an email about SpongeBob:

"Is your organization serious about your comments about SpongeBob being gay? I find Focus on the Family to be a very close-minded and homphobic ministry. Your statement about this character will go down in history as being as idiotic as Falwell's comments on Tinky Winky the Teletubby."

They replied today as follows:

"Greetings from Focus on the Family, and thank you for taking the time to express your concern over the recent _New York Times_ article in which Dr. Dobson commented on the popular cartoon character, SpongeBob SquarePants. We appreciate having an opportunity to offer a few words of clarification on the matter.

At the outset, it’s important to note that, contrary to what some have suggested, Dr. Dobson was *not* criticizing the character of SpongeBob or the program on which he appears. The _New York Times_ article does mention that SpongeBob has “become a well-known camp figure among gay men”; however, if you will re-read the piece carefully you will discover that this observation and the accompanying commentary were made by the article’s author, David D. Kirkpatrick, and not by Dr. Dobson.

Dr. Dobson addresses this situation and its ongoing implications in much greater detail in the February, 2005 edition of his ministry letter. You can access the letter on our Web site at the following link: http://www.family.org/docstudy/newsletters/a0035339.cfm.

We trust this brief reply has served to clarify Dr. Dobson’s intentions for you. Thanks once more for your honest feedback. Best wishes to you in the days ahead.

I see, it was all misinterpreted...

Huh?

Scrooge McSam 01-28-2005 04:44 PM

I'm just impressed they used the word "camp".

Gn2Dlnd 01-30-2005 01:03 AM

I'm so not going to give their counter the satisfaction of me clicking on the link.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-30-2005 01:12 AM

So, I guess there are quite a few sexually active cartoon characters out the huh?

Not only does SpongeBob have no sex, he has no freekin' "package." Come'on, we all know water expands sponges right? Then he'd be SpongeBob Puptent Pants. Yeah?

Just add water...

Yeah, I didn't. I have no idea what it says there... But then again, to disable the link seemed wrong to me, too.
