There was a Mother and daughter pair at the salon who'd just moved here from Wisconsin. The mom was all excited about feeling her first quake. The teen (early 20's?) daughter was a little freaked out. Over what? That was a nothing quake - wait till they feel a REAL one!

One of my sisters, who has lived in Southern California all her life freaks out at the slightest temblor.

You might be surprised. I thought I would, too, but it was fine. My first was the 1994 Northridge one. Big surprise. I had a bit of an issue for a bit after, sleeping mostly, but it's fine now. I've felt them all over by now, and it's no big deal.

Most of them are minor. I've even had them hit at night: I wake up, oh, it was an earthquake, and go back to sleep. Especially if the dogs aren't up making noise.

Here's what a true earthquake veteran does for middle of the night earthquakes:

Wakes up
Realizes it's an earthquake
Thinks - Crap it's an earthquake [still in bed]
a few seconds later - I wonder if I should get out of bed [still in bed]
a few seconds later - seems to be getting stronger
a few seconds later - maybe I should get out of bed [still in bed]
a second later - either decides it's getting stronger and they're going to get in the door way or decides it's slowing down and lays there
after it's over - crap, it's 3am. Work is gonna suck tomorrow. Hell, I'm up. Let's go see who else is online and how bad it was. And make sure I don't smell gas.

We haven't had a good-sized shaker in SoCal in almost 10 years. We're overdue.
