Okay, I'll elaborate. ;)

Star Wars is Science Fantasy. But Sci Fi has traditionally had a lot of overlap (fan-wise) with pure Fantasy (e.g., Lord of the Rings) as well as Horror. So I'm perfectly willing to let the Sci-Fi channel air Star Wars, sword & sorcery, and even the occasional horror flick.

Yes, pro-wrestling is 100% fabrication, but so are Hello Kitty cartoons and we don't see those on Sci-Fi.

Alex, I was not aware of the contractual obligations issue. That certainly sheds some light on the situation, ugly as it may be.

So Monty Python is behind the name change?

Apparently "Sci Fi" is to geeky and they think "Syfy" is going to cure their image problem.

Actually, Syfy should be pronounced "Siffy" or "Syph-y" which sounds a bit syphalitic if you ask me.

That's a pretty crappy take on it...

I've been disappointed with SciFi from day one, and am similarly disappointed with the Science channel.

There actually are a lot of people in the Sci-Fi fan community who pronounce it "skiffy", especially in reference to a person who is a fan. As in, "I met Pat's new boyfriend at the Creation con last month. Fortunately for Pat, this one is a skiffy."

One of these things is not like the other. One of the things just doesn't belong.

GD, that was kinda funny. But to geek out a little, the Starship Size Comparison Chart is pretty cool and the first time I've seen such a clear comparison of so many different universes' ships at a glance.

lashbear 03-18-2009 12:23 AM

Hey !! How come the Enterprise is not on that chart ?
