FISH!

This one requires a bit of backstory.

Jeremy Piven has backed out of his role in the Broadway revival of Speed-the-Plow. He claims a high mercury count caused him to be fatigued, experience spacial & balance problems, and made it difficult to remember his lines. He blames his high mercury count on eating too much sushi and Chinese herbs.

Riiiiight...

I like what playwright David Mamet said, "I talked to Jeremy on the phone, and he told me that he discovered that he had a very high level of mercury. So my understanding is that he is leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer."

This has inspired some clever folks to make Fish! The Jeremy Piven Parody Song, a take-off on Zip! from Pal Joey.

from wiki: In November 16, 2006, 6 months after 'leaving' YouTube, MadV posted the video entitled One World (40 seconds). Audio used is "Með blóðnasir" by Sigur Rós. This video showed the character holding his hand up to the camera, on which he had written in black ink 'One World'. The text of the video is as follows:
"This is an invitation, to make a stand, to make a statement, to make a difference. Join in. Be part of something. Post your response now." This text was followed by the date "4/12/06" (written in European format), meaning the 4th of December 2006. That date was the closing date or due date for all responses.
Image:OneWorldMadV.png
Screenshot from the One World campaign

The 'One World' video was promptly featured on the YouTube front page, and from then on its influence snowballed as YouTube members around the world posted video responses to it, with the same 'ink-on-hand' theme [9]. This represents the largest recorded response to a viral video yet seen on the internet, and has left the video at the number one spot for Most Responded Video of All Time [10] on YouTube.

The influence of silence in this video was picked by MTV, and MadV appeared in an MTV Online news report about the 2008 Presidential candidates [11]. He also appeared on Pepsi's 'The 9 on Yahoo!'

The One World campaign also influenced a new charity website HandMessages.com, where members of the public are invited to continue posting messages written on their hands [12], though it is unclear to what extent MadV himself is involved with this website.

On December 22, 2006 MadV posted 'The Message' (4 minutes 12 seconds), a video compilation of responses to the One World invitation. Audio used is 'Kids Will Be Skeletons' by Mogwai. The video is an emotional sequence of messages collected from YouTube users with the common theme of love and understanding for the whole human race. [13]

Sorry Lash - unless someone has a way to steal content from NBC.com, which I doubt, and which also would end up with some hefty penalties if you're caught.

No worries - it's just a joke about local Hawaiians being pissed at tourists.

This month's Vogue has a great interview with Mrs. Bill Gates, the lovely philanthropist Melinda Gates. The interview focuses on the Microsoft founder's better half, but there's a fun Apple rivalry moment in the piece, when the subject of the couples' kids is brought up.

She says: "There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household. But iPods and iPhones are two things we don't get for our kids."

Gates does admit to being swayed—a little—by Apple's smartphone, though: "Every now and then I look at my friends and say 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone'."

Surging...lol...surfing... just one letter away on the keyboard but oh what a difference.

To go through a proxy you can look up proxies on google. I think proxy.com had a list. You basically go to a proxy website and enter the website address you want to go through. It sort of forwards your request through their website and may allow you access to things.

Best Muppet outtakes I've ever seen are in the special features of "Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas". I was laughing so hard that my stomach hurt for an entire day after.

I will not spoil it for you, but my gods... it's damn funny. :)

It LOOKS beautiful, it looks like they absolutely nailed bringing the illustrations to life.

It had been a LONG time since I've read the book, I did not recall the story. CP brought it home from the library for me, at which point I realized why I didn't remember the story. There IS no story. That's the beauty of the book, it's the absolute essence of innocent childhood fantasy. What little "story" exists outside of the world of the wild things is sublimely minimalistic, a tiny snippit of reality to connect you with the kid, and nothing more.

I can't possibly see how adding a movie about childhood angst or family strife or whatever blather they've made it around 30 genius lines of silly fancy will do anything but harm. Not to the book, that is untouchably timeless. But I do not hold any high hopes for the movie.

Happy Clouds by Stuart Semple for Moncler

The weather in Milan this Salone has certainly put a smile on people's faces, but on Piazza della Scala, last night (Wednesday 22nd), even the clouds were smiling. British artist Stuart Semple released 2,000 'smiley faces' made of tightly-packed bubbles into the air, which dreamily wafted into the blue sky and then dissolved. The performance, which was first shown in London in February, is part of Semple's on-going collaboration with Moncler, which also includes new works being shown at the Moncler Milan flagship on Via della Spiga.

I think it could have been even more interesting if all the cameras had been focused on one subject that was seen from various points of view; so that each video would have fed off of or into the others and thereby creating a greater whole from the various parts.

Just to use pigeons as an example, the artist could have set up a camera to film pigeons from overhead (say from a helicopter or tall building), another camera at a person's foot level, another at a person's eye level and another camera attached to a pigeon.

I thought the medium was far cooler than the message.

lashbear 05-12-2009 05:39 PM

If they had filmed the one subject (ie pidgeons) you wouldn't have been able to start any of the film clips at any time.

I thought the sounds did converge into a cohesive immersion, and it was fun to try out various combos before unleashing all of them at once.

I understand that, but how is "not work safe" generally defined? I'm not trying to a dˇck* nor argumentative, I'm asking because I genuinely want to know so I can appropriately flag material and not get anyone in trouble.

It looks weird. It looks like a guy getting splashed with milk. (Though I doubt it's actually milk, I suspect it's some kind of whitewash because milk isn't that opaque on film.) Is it his expression? Would a happy expression make a difference? It it because he's attractive? Would an ugly guy getting the same treatment be okay?

I am ignorant. Educate me, please.

P.S. to my previous post, I meant to say "thank you gift".

*it just comes naturally

Not Afraid 06-01-2009 11:30 AM

It looks like a guy being splashed with milk - in reverse. The title is the only suggestive thing about it and I think the title is pretty non-descriptive of what's going on.

Ghoulish Delight 06-01-2009 11:31 AM

You yourself described it as "bukkake". I would think it pretty self evident that something that can be likened to "mass ejaculation onto someone's face/body", even if simulated, might be considered not-work-safe.

Tref 06-01-2009 12:04 PM

Bukkake is the key word here. Complain all you want but you opened a clip with bukkake in the title. Here is an idea -- when at work, stay away from bukkake clips.

SzczerbiakManiac 06-01-2009 12:21 PM

I would have zero apprehension letting a supervisor see that clip, so I guess I just don't get it. Yeah, I labeled it "bukkake", but that was in jest and not meant to suggest the real thing. Sorry for being to thick-headed.

But if someone would be so kind as to give a good definition of "work safe", I would be most grateful.

Ghoulish Delight 06-01-2009 01:08 PM

Sorry, to my eye, that clip is one small step short of a simulated sexual act. You may have been joking when you said "bukkake", but had I viewed that at work and someone walked past my cubicle, I would not have been too happy.

Strangler Lewis 06-01-2009 01:12 PM

Of course, if the title had been "Zachary Quinto in a Suit and Tie," and the video showed Zachary Quinto in a suit and tie, you'd still have some explaining to do.

You know that chocolate fountains that seem to pop up at weddings, parties and buffets? Have you ever looked at one and thought: What else could I put in there besides chocolate?

Turns out - all kinds of stuff.

I give you Ranch Dressing Fountain, and of course, nacho cheese fountain. Another cheese fountain that's, well, disturbing? I don't know what's in this one because it's red, isn't it?. Any guesses?

Total Eclipse of the Heart: Literal Video Version

second class citizen 06-04-2009 12:29 PM

I was in desperate need of some desperately needed humor. YouTube answered my prayers with this. World Burping Champion (Warning! If watching this at work, you might want to turn down the volume; but then again, if you do, you're going to miss the point; so maybe wait until you can witness this at full volume. It would be even better with Dolby THX surround sound!)

I think this deserves some kind of YouTube Oscar for Best Soundscore. It perfectly underscores and magnifies the intensity and drama of this documentary.

Then I thought...maybe someone at YouTube should develop an "Oscar" awards. Perhaps they could call it the "Two Thumbs UP" award and hand out bronzed two thumbs up. They could develop catagories like the Academy Awards do, but let the viewers cast their popular votes for the best.

Then I imagined what kind of fashions I'd see scrolling down the red carpet.

The Evolution of Dance Party

I have no idea if this was planned or spontaneous. I'd like to believe it was just a spur of the moment thing. Strangers all coming together and dancing just for the fun and silliness of it.

Betty 06-04-2009 04:38 PM

This is an infomercial for something. I'm not exactly sure what for... however, it has super cool fast driving (like I do in Burnout Revenge only better and for real), strangeness, and more fast driving. (once you get to it anyway).

I rather enjoyed the warning label - do not resist!

quoting from News From Me
Quote:

This is kinda interesting, though you may not want to watch all of it. We're big fans here of the movie musical version of Li'l Abner. The movie was shot for the widescreen VistaVision process and its cinematographer framed its images accordingly. But when they run it these days on Turner Classic Movies, they use a print that has not been cropped for VistaVision format; that shows more of the top and bottom of each shot than was intended. As a result, you see a lot of boom mikes and lights and tops of backdrops and such. Someone has compiled about eight minutes of these cropping malfunctions...

Sorry, but that was fake. The crowd was perfectly shaped for the choreography. They were using the parade lights. And the real kicker is that her reaction didn't seem real to me at all, especially in the part where he was twirling her around. Plus, he wasn't nervous at all...

Gay Education
Anyone know what that's from?

Ghoulish Delight 07-21-2009 01:08 PM

I still get an unsettling feeling whenever I see this kind of thing. All I can picture is the anit-gay crowd saying, "Aha, so if it's genetic and/or hormonal, we can just fix it with gene therapy or hormones! Treat it like the disease that it is!" Proving it's "natural" does nothing to solve the problem, imo.

It's an interesting area of study, but I have serious doubts that its the silver bullet in the debate that many people seem to think it is.

SzczerbiakManiac 07-21-2009 02:08 PM

You're absolutely right GD. The whackjobs who hate gays because their invisible friend told them to do so will never be dissuaded by science and/or facts. If the Bible, Koran, Tanakh, or Harvey tells them the sky is green, that's the end of the discussion.
