As an aside... apparently there's a documentary called Helvetica. Yes, it's about the font. Now available on Netflix.

While it certainly has its place in history, this has to be the most boring font! Max Miedinger should be shot (if it weren't for the fact that he is already dead).

I actually like The Doors as a film. Top Gun, oh so uninteresting.

I am not sure you'd say that if you saw the documentary (which, to be fair, I have not seen - but I read an excellent article [on Slate, maybe?] that thrilled me without any video footage.) Though I know your area of expertise, so perhaps the documentary would leave you cold.

Prudence 01-08-2008 07:18 PM

You're all wrong - best/hottest Val Kilmer movie is "Top Secret!"

My comments are borne from my experience with bad typography. I might still be interested in the documentary, but I think the font is deadly fugly.

If a girl named Cassidy was a lesbian, would she be a Butch Cassidy?

I'm snowed in for the second day- we got about 5 more inches of snow last night, and I can't even get out of the driveway without getting high centered.

We probably won't get snowplows up here until late Thursday, and if we get hit again it's not going to happen until Saturday. I really hate snow.

See? When I was in VA, I dreamed of snow like this (like a kid wanting a snow day from school) and never got it. :(

I hated driving in the ice and sleet, so I can sympathize. But so long as you don't lose power, you can Wii with Tori!

katiesue 01-09-2008 02:15 PM

But snow is pretty ;)

Ponine 01-09-2008 02:41 PM

And being snowed in is a damn good reason to not go to work when you desperatley wanted to take a sick day and just couldnt bring yourself to call in well.

I love.... looking out the front window at 10pm after a snowfall and seeing it look almost like ten am.

It's days like today when I have to question my choices. I know I've done the right thing by moving over here, but I'm so f#@$ing over snow right now, it's unreal. After spending about an hour getting my car out on Monday (due to my forgetting how to manage snow that's been plowed up behind my car), I've decided to forget about doing anything today. I'm not in the mood to dig, though I suspect it will take half the time, now that I remember how to deal with it.

I guess last night to this morning, my town saw something like 7 or 8 inches. I'm guessing we've seen a bunch throughout the day, and tonight is supposed to give us a couple more inches. The snow outside is just around knee-deep.

My walk to the exercise room at the complex became futile after I kept dead-ending into snow plow walls. I gave up and turned back to the apartment. I feel pretty useless today.

Bleh.

Worst of all... it isn't even good snowball snow. :(

Sorry about all your snow issues. Do you live in a more secluded area? I know we're supposed to have another day of snow, then... ?

Hey, I never said it didn't snow!

On the other hand, it usually doesn't snow quite like this in the basin/valley/whatever. It generally sticks to the higher elevations.

Too much snow!

Bleh.

I am thinking of figuring out how I can ambush J with snowballs... but then I remember this is sucky snow.

I live in Eastern Washington, just across the Idaho border and close to Canada. (I think it's just over 100 miles, but I never go there). Anyway, it's mountainous and forested and I live in the burbs of a smallish city. I know I'm rambling, but I think I am going stir-crazy. I may have to drink tonight.:D

Doesn't the whole driving dynamic just suck rocks in the snow? We're on a steep hill, and in the middle of a snow belt, so it gets kind of crazy in the winter. I'm sorry you are being subjected to it, but look at the bright side: new kitteh!

blueerica 01-09-2008 09:28 PM

WB -

Jeebuz, I'm glad I don't live in the hill action. I'm just feeling retarded because I haven't had to deal with this for such a long time. Living in Southern Cal can really spoil a girl.

On the plus side, when J & I came back from dinner tonight, we saw a snow plow going through our complex. On the downside, the plowed some more snow behind my Explorer, meaning that there's a bunch of work to do tomorrow.

Which brings up my next troubling subject:

I'm not so sure what's up with kitteh. I know he's been a little more nervous in this new setting after over a year of being in shelters, but he's been snippy and loving, which is a strange combination. I've attributed it to being nervous, but then today he started shaking his head. I noticed yesterday that something seemed up, but didn't give it any thought and figured it might be dirt from our shoes since he sometimes rolls on the mat just inside the door.

This evening when we came home, I realized he had a blob of old blood at the bottom of his outer ear. I'm not sure what's up, but the way he's acting, I'm calling the vet's office we adopted him out of. Hopefully they'll give us a break if its an infection since it's been only a day since we got him, but in either case, I'm not looking forward to driving in this snow. The morning news shows featured all the cars that had gone off the road due to the slippery conditions.

Oh, and last night I busted my ass while I was just trying to look at my car. I'm so sore tonight!

So yeah, I've got a drink in hand.

*sigh*

wendybeth 01-09-2008 09:43 PM

I'll be joining you in the drinkies department here in a sec.

Eric is optimistically putting the garbage out. I hope they do come to get it- they will create a path for escape. It would be funny if one of those big rigs got stuck, though. The city would have to send plows to the rescue.

(Forgot to add that I hope kitty is doing alright! It could be allergies- he might be digging at his ears because the skin itches or something. Samwise is sweet/evil all the time, btw- he'll be gnawing your arm off one second and the next giving you a bath.)

alphabassettgrrl 01-09-2008 10:38 PM

My volunteer group met tonight at the police department (we meet monthly) but only a few of us showed. The captain is out of town, and nobody else came. It's not our usual night, so maybe people forgot. Whatever. I need to email the captain and give him the run-down; we talked about a few things but we don't have a quorum so we can't have a real meeting. We shot the **** for an hour and a half. I leave the meeting room, and a woman pulls up in a car, kid in the front seat wearing a sullen expression. She asks if I work here (no) but she wants a deputy. I know there's a phone at the door that goes to dispatch, so I offer to walk her over. Another of the guys comes out of our meeting room, and he has sheriff dispatch on speed dial so he calls them himself. Mom's still trying to talk sense to the kid (not working). Deputy comes from the station to talk to him until the guys dispatched get there.

Kid's dad is here; parents are divorced, dad wants them to arrest him, mom wants them not to arrest him. It's not gonna happen, anyway. They don't arrest kids for simply being under the influence and underage. Mom left with him in the end.

We don't usually get this stuff happening. The four of us from the meeting stood around talking in the parking lot for a while. One of the guys had left his car door open so I waited to see if his car started before I left. It was definitely an odd night.

So...

For some reason our hardwood floors are becoming more and more slippery and we have no idea why. I think I may need to read some Murakami.

Hehe, there was one spot I kept slipping in on NYE, and it wasn't wet. Someone else confirmed for me that it was super slippery for seemingly no reason, so it wasn't just because the Tang punch was so good.

Not Afraid 01-09-2008 11:11 PM

No, they are slippery in the living room by the dining room arch. But, they have started getting slippery in other parts of the house. It's odd. Thurston is having problems walking around.

Bring a video camera and stick it on your dashboard. At least if something goes wrong you'll get some good YouTube fodder out of it.

blueerica 01-10-2008 08:59 AM

Maybe your floors are sympathetically slippery to those of us stuck in the snow?

In the meanwhile, I'm hoping to call and get a chance to talk to the vet. My cat has a HUGE number of allergies that show up on his skin. I also have discovered that he is a bread thief. :) He's not exactly interested in his duck and green peas fancy-pants food he gets because of his allergies... he wants bread. So, I partly wonder if this could be a symptom of his allergies...

Yeah, I've been saying that about Depp since the 21 Jump Street days. In recent years he's taken an acting turn where I've begun to find him enjoyable but I still don't really see what all the brouhaha about his physical attractiveness is. But then I didn't see it for Winona Ryder either so I guess I just don't swing in that direction.

I don't know if it is generally available in stores but we stopped by Tillamook Cheese Factory over Christmas and they had a black pepper cheddar that was really so very good.

I had to veer off since I can't figure out why anybody would eat almonds recreationally regardless of what is put on them.

blueerica 01-10-2008 03:01 PM

Recreational almond eating... nice.

So, uh... What hobbies do you have? Oh, I eat almonds.

I'm a fan of almonds, but not nearly as much as I am a fan of cheese. I didn't see any Tillamook black pepper cheddar in the stores, and would have picked some up if I had. That sounds fantastic.

We went to the Blue Diamond plant in 8th grade for a field trip. Everyone ate a zillion of them. The 6 hour bus ride home wasn't fun.

Back on the snow tip: Another textbook of mine sold on Amazon, so in order to get it to Georgia by Monday/Tuesday, I decided it was best to go to the post office today, and not wait for J to come home to dig me out of the 2-3 feet of snow behind my car. (It got plowed into my car... grr!) Took me around 40 minutes this time, which I consider an achievement given how this was so much worse than it was the last time. I ended up needing help on the last push since there was so much ice from the melted snow/ice from the last snowfall.

I am getting all-weather tires for next season.

So. At work today I was told that my job is being shifted from circulation to the admin dept. I'll be doing an amalgam of jobs, including handling the Welcome Desk scheduling and procedure, community room reservations, including all the tech stuff that needs to be set up for people that come in to use it, and some small tech stuff for the tech dept who's losing one of the FOUR people that do ALL the tech stuff for our building.

So yeah, I'm now a little dutch boy set to stick my finger in the dike. These are new tasks for our new building that have overwhelmed staff in other depts. I'll also be an assistant to our Director, Manager, and Admin Assistant for all kinds of data wrangling etc. Guess I shouldn't have done so well on those Excel doc assignments 2 years ago.

I'm trying to see the upside, that this will be new and exciting and different, that I'll be learning new things and in on the Admin stuff, but it's still a blow. I'm losing all the comfort I have in the dept I know, and I won't deal with the public, at least at first. I'm also losing my window with the lovely tree across the street. Cube farm for me. :(

I'm sure it'll be fine. I just have to get through the rest of today.

Well, in order of true preference:

Bacon
Cheese
Almonds

That said, I needed something to snack on (I'm stress eating) and almonds seemed to be the better option than a pound of bacon or a hunk of mozzarella with black truffles (no matter how totally delicious that is, in small doses) It is the lesser of many evils I could have reached for.

Of course, some home made cookies would be good too at this point!

What you need to do is stock up on the "flat rate" envelopes and boxes. The envelopes are 60 cents more to mail then the standard shipping rate that Amazon gives you. You can print your shipping labels from home. No more going to the post office! I think you can even order the flat rate supplies to be delivered to your home for free.

I still wouldn't trust it - I'm not sure why, but sending something important out of an apartment complex mailbox in this weather doesn't seem wise, especially given the rinky dink operation that is this complex. Plus, I'd have to walk through said snow to get to the mailboxes, which is only slightly more appealing. My big issue is that if it wasn't the post office, it would be something else and I'd be digging my car out tomorrow. Plus, it was nice to force myself to drive in the skerry snow.. I guess.

But, yes, I do use the flat rate envelope, since it fits most books, gets there in 2-4 days and the price is right on it. It's actually the same amount of time that the "expedited" option is, and that's what the person chose, so I sent it the way I would have sent it, anyway. ;) Sneaky, sneaky! Profits!

That's what I do. Easier all around (and by the time you buy an envelope, you're usually already over the difference in cost).

Cool! I just heard a UFO while I was out walking the dogs...

It's an overcast drizzly night here and I was just heading out when I heard a sound something like a flock of owls hooting into an echo chamber filtered through a synthesizer. Obviously no earthly entity could make a sound like that.

Yes - and the other side as well - and about midway into the livingroom from the dining room - and the hallway outside the bedroom - and my side of the bed near the foot of the bed.

So, this is why you hire professionals to take care of your dogs while you're away....

I'm only doing walks and feeding for Leo at night. The neighbor lets him out of the house in the morning and gives him food and water outside. I get there tonight and not only is the dead bolt locked, but the door knob is locked as well. I don't have a key for the door knob. I go the the neighbors house to see if they have a key. They don't. Apparently the guy who knew the specifics about the door decided he didn't want to let Leo out this morning and sent someone else over instead. They, in turn, locked everyone out of the house. First we broke into the gate to get to the back yard to see if the key would work on any of the back doors. They don't. Then he decided that we could remove a pane of glass in the French doors and unlock that door through the opening. So, he starts chipping away at the wood door. This isn't just glazing putty that he's removing, but actual wood that is part of the door. He completely destroys one whole panel of wood but he gets the glass out without breaking it.

How much is glass now a days? Wouldn't it have been smarter to just break the glass and call a window guy?

Anyways, it's not my dime and I'm just glad this is between neighbors and doesn't involve our company. I'd be interested to know how much it is going to cost my client and if it is more than hiring us to do 2 visits a day.

You can drive to Disneyland from Las Vegas, right? I mean, not like daily or anything, but you could realistically drive instead of fly?

What the hell? It's 2:30am and there is an info-mercial for Colon Cleaning -"The Almighty Cleanser." Apparently the question is "Is a clean colon the secret to health and vitality?"

Totally. It's between 3 and 6 hours, depending on how you drive

(I really do have a friend who did it in 3 hours once. Don't wanna think about how many laws he broke doing it. Typically takes 4 1/2)

Yup. Driving from OC to Vegas isn't horrible (if you don't leave on a Friday during rush hour). I do it a few times a year.

Though for anyone thinking of doing it, be aware that the CHP is upping their patrol on the flat, straight stretch of the 15 all the way out to State Line - looking for speeders, drunk drivers and people not wearing seat belts.

Amazon's got some Here. A bottle lasts a pretty long time. For Blue Cheese I usually get Shaft's brand but no reason any other wouldn't work.

Morrigoon 01-11-2008 10:12 AM

And how does the honey relate to the bleu cheese, I missed the connection there.

Is the honey any less expensive at Bristol Farms? (Hahah, yeah right, right?)

katiesue 01-11-2008 10:15 AM

No it's I think $15.99 at Bristol Farms (and a different brand than pictured but looks very similiar). You kind of mush up the blue cheese and drizzel the honey over it. So you don't use a ton of honey. I'd say I geat about 8-10 blocks of blue cheese per jar of honey.

The honey is sweet and the cheese is sharp somehow making a very yummy taste.

okay, all fixed. But the techno-pop was annoying.

Would be the same price, but I'll be returning by car. The amazing part was getting the "deal" on a 1-way ticket. So often the sale prices are "each way, based on round-trip purchase".

The gas for the return trip is more expensive than the plane ticket.

2,775 miles / 25 MPG * $3.00/gallon = $333.00

Now I wish I hadn't done that math.

I still can't shake this hideous post-holiday congestion, Sinus, chest, the whole shebang.

Blecch :hack hack:

BUT! Finally the farmer's market customers are back. Three weeks of three day weekends, plus getting rained out of two markets and a third shut down from wind, it's nice to see some positive cash flow again. Although, lesson learned, it really is a good idea to have a prudent reserve set aside. Which I didn't. Tomorrow (Sunday) I'm set up in Larchmont Village, come on by! Today, I think I'll finally see "Enchanted" and go walk around the Park for a couple hours.

There are lots of those sorts of local produce subscription things. I did one for awhile before law school (best eggs ever). Probably one in your area as well. Google your area and "produce subscription" or "community sponsored agriculture".

Here's a web directory of CSA farms.

Strangler Lewis 01-13-2008 04:52 PM

We did one some years back in SF. I was disappointed in that it was overly heavy on melons and corn smut, or huitlacoche, if you prefer. They also only gave you enough "produce for two" to get through the week if you had a crack habit.

Our neighbors have produce delivered and seem pretty happy. At least with their produce. So one of these days we might give it another shot.

Woofy indeed, though there is a limit to woofiness on my end. Happily, if he gets too woofy, he eats less and exercises ;)

Also, he doesn't wear those leather bondage outfits.

Not a bad idea - that would get certain gays watching football. The San Francisco Woofies? That makes me think of BASEketball:

One of my friends has a daughter who is turning 25 in a few weeks. This very sweet girl is mentally handicapped, with a maturation and intellectual level of about 7-9 years old. She always comes to Tori's parties and has a blast, so when her mom called me to invite us to her party in February we were happy to accept the invite. Well, seems her mom (actually, she is her step mom but has raised her since she was an infant and loves her dearly) decided that she deserved to have a real Princess party, so she's going all out. She's sending a limo to everyone's homes, and then we are going to the Davenport Hotel where about 25 of us will have a dinner party. Afterwards, my friend, her daughter, Tori and myself are planning on staying the night in the Safari Tower. All the girls are to dress up as princesses (we're getting them prom-style dresses, not the Disney kind- too big now!) and will have their hair and nails done. This is going to cost a small fortune, but my friend reasoned that her daughter never got to go to a Prom and will likely never get married, so she's going to do this up as Swankily as possible. The Davenport is a gorgeous hotel that recently went through a major refurbishment- we love to eat lunch there on special occasions. This is the first time we've stayed overnight since the remodel, though. At one time, it was considered the finest hotel in the U.S., and is still way up there on the list. Tori is beyond excited.:D

Ponine 01-14-2008 02:53 PM

I think that sounds like a wonderful plan!
And twenty five is a great age for it! She's have a blast, be able to be sparkly with all her friends, and the younger girls will be able to doll up and be cool.

That sounds so fun! What are YOU wearing?

blueerica 01-14-2008 02:53 PM

Very cool, WB! What a treat for everyone!

BarTopDancer 01-14-2008 02:57 PM

katiesue 01-14-2008 03:06 PM

Gn2Dlnd 01-14-2008 03:27 PM

That made me smile! :D

Snowflake 01-14-2008 03:28 PM

Well, if you can, we must have pics of everyone in their princess drag, this is a fabulous idea. Major snaps for the step Mom for doing this. Sounds like total swanky fun!

Will you be wearing your traditional black? ;)

wendybeth 01-14-2008 04:43 PM

Lol- do they make black princess dresses? I still doubt I'd wear it- not a dressy kind of girl here. I'll try and find something; if I can't find anything I'll pull an Ellen (albeit a straight one) and wear a suit. I really can't stand dresses, and I can't wear heels anymore so this oughta be interesting. I could go totally camp and dress up like an opera singer.......nah. (I did do that for a murder mystery years ago- rented the dress from the local theater group. Very fun!)

I woke up vomiting (usual tummy issue), had my client ready to write a deal only to have it turn out to be off the market already, my boyfriend calls from work to complain that the chemicals are making him sick and wondering if he has to find a new line of work, and then while I'm on the phone with a friend helping them sort out all their life issues, my dad cals to apologize that he's not going to live long enough to see my children, or not much of them.

Well, I can't do much to help with the vomiting or chemicals but if you like I could send my kids out to visit your dad for a week. After that I can assure you that his desire to talk about grand kids will be greatly diminished.

I will savor this weekend, for sure. I've got Sweeney Todd and the Mary Blair exhibit on my calendar.

Capt Jack 01-15-2008 11:50 AM

I consider this gap in the holidays as the perfect chance to schedule 'private' holidays for yourself. theyre IMO better than the regularly scheduled kind as they lend themselves well to YOUR schedule instead of the gigantic cluster-f*** public kind.

BarTopDancer 01-15-2008 12:22 PM

Shot alive? I mean, the person was (presumable) alive when they were shot, so it would sound more accurate.

Similar to situations described as a "near miss". No, it was an ACTUAL miss: it was a near HIT.

Dammit. I hate creative blocks when I'm scrambling to get something done. :(

Strangler Lewis 01-15-2008 05:35 PM

Shot dead is the most accurate. It tells you that the people were dead, and it tells you how they got dead. Anything else such as "gunned down," "homicide" or "murder" requires additional facts to which the news folks might not be formally privy.

If Sawzall wasn't the first reciprocating saw, it was the one that popularized it.

WB- the party sounds awesome!

Goonie- that stinks. I hope your tomorrow is better.

NA- poor Thurston. I hope he heals quickly and fully. Poor little guy.

I love and hate this time of the year. Sure the holidays are over (there are advantages to that) and there aren't any real big days off, but that's ok. I don't work in an office, so don't get paid holidays; I do get official holidays off from school, but that's not the victory that it used to be. It's kind of nice to be back in a quiet part of the year, but it's dark and cold and I get depressed.

Charles was meowing in the dining room last night. I went out to investigate and saw both he and Aleister peering through the dining room blinds. I went to the kitchen door to look out and came face to face with a very large raccoon. He saw me and ran, but got stuck trying to fit through the wrought iron gate. Damn wildlife!

Sooo... You all laughed off my UFO ecnounter but who's laughing now?

Dozens of extremely credible hicks Texans have reported seeing a mile-long UFO hovering over Texas.

Wake up people! ET is looking for some prime real estate to settle down on.

I get to run the college radio station tomorrow without the manager...

the station is on the air... FCC controlled am radio air... until 2pm... i get to run it by myself 11 - 2.

I want to so change format.. but would get in trouble if i did tomorrow ;)

Maybe i will just play random random random stuff... with the legal station ID every hour of course ;)

Too bad I'm on eastern... otherwise you could enjoy the fun stuff if it went off... and know whos responsible.

I might post a direct link tonight...

Capt Jack 01-16-2008 03:45 PM

if at all possible, just record the 4 hours and make it available to download.

it may not be live, but at least its recorded for posterity.

Having had taken classes in radio programming, I can hear a lot of their clock (the hourly programming of what is played).

Their are a chain of stations across the country called "Jack" and a few called "Dave" (and I think a couple called "Jane"). I am not sure if they are all owned by one company, but they all have the same concept and probably use the same consultant.

There are also a bucket load of "Star" radio stations, "Kiss" (known as KIIS here in LA), "Magic", etc.

This morning I discovered that the distant sound of machine gun fire sounds just like the last gurgling moments of coffee brewing in a drip coffee maker - then again, maybe I just needed a cup.

Alex 01-16-2008 09:34 PM

I hear machine gun fire every day (we live two blocks away from an Army Support Training Center) so I'm going to have to say you just needed a cup.

To me it sounds more like a car driving over a rumble strip.

And it is amazing how quickly it just fades away into standard background noise.

In Firefox: Tools -> Options. Select the "Security" tab. Click "Show Passwords". Scroll through the list and find the site you want to forget the password to.

In IE: Toosl -> Internet Options. Select the "Content" tab. Click "AutoComplete". Click "Clear Passwords". I don't know if there's a way to only clear one site's as there is with Firefox.

Not Afraid 01-17-2008 11:57 AM

How's your kitty, E?

blueerica 01-17-2008 01:31 PM

Ooh! Kitty is doing much better. I don't know if I posted anything about it, but he didn't have mites. He did have continuing problems with his allergies. A combination of ear cleaning solution, antibiotics, two amateur cat wrestlers and a diet of duck and peas and no more sneaked food seems to have him in good spirits. The ears are slowly getting less plugged.

Did I mention that he's a total bread fiend? I didn't figure it out until I woke up one morning to find him munching on it. Needless to say, stuff is more locked up - I just didn't think boring old bread would be an issue when Monsieur Markus gets a feast of duck and peas.

That reminds me that I need to find some cables and upload some pics of him. He is increasingly adorable, but I've been reminded how time-consuming pets can be. He's mostly time-consuming because he likes to hang out with people.

The problem: What happens when I get a job?

Well, I'll probably get a second cat. It's not all that much more work than just one cat, especially after Markus' health issues. Hopefully, they can be buddies and I'll be well on my way to having a Casa de Swank in Utah.

Disneyphile 01-17-2008 01:43 PM

I can't wait to see pics of him! :)

Snowflake 01-17-2008 01:59 PM

Ooh, I can't wait to see pics, either.

Bread, not as odd as Tango liking raw broccoli and fritos and crackers. Then there was the evening she stole a fried won ton off my plate. Crunchy she likes, a lot!

I'd vote for getting a pal. I wish I could for Tango, she'd love a buddy, but the lease is 1 pet only, dammit.

Hmm, that's an interesting location. La Veta at point is a majorly busy area, and that'd be right on top of the HUGE hospital complex. Pretty undesirable.

Well yeah, of course it's undesirable (and yeah, I think it's close to St. Joseph's), I mean, it's at the absolute bottom bottom of the price range, but still... it's not in Santa Ana, either.

Prudence 01-17-2008 04:05 PM

Note to security officers:

If you want to keep people out of the elevator for a two-hour span so that your visiting dignitary doesn't have to rub elbows with the proletariat, or ride along with explosive devices, you might want to think of a better "out-of-order" reason than "preventative maintenance."

The state of elevator repair services on campus is widely known. Elevators regularly sit inoperable for weeks at a time waiting for their turn in the repair cycle. The idea that you would be so caught up suddenly as to be into a preventative maintenance cycle is laughable.

You're not fooling anyone, you know.

Sadly, he's probably allergic.

The docs aren't sure what he's allergic to, so they took him off everything that's typically in catfood. (Thus, the actual fuss over his bread thievery - other than the fact that it was some damn good bread).

Markus is on a prescription limited ingredient diet of duck and peas. (Which he may develop an allergy to later... gah!)

So, I guess I could pick up some duck and say, "Pookie want ducky?"

I had to cut my nails... I can't type worth a crap.

We are getting new keyless locks on all of our doors. The locks use fingerprints to access the doors. My nails were too long to be able to read my fingerprint. *sigh*

Not Afraid 01-17-2008 06:28 PM

I'm glad to hear Pookie2 is dong well! I can't wait to see pics of him.

Thurston is doing ok. His eye hasn't ruptured, so that's a good thing. He HATES his e-collar - even though I've decorated it with puffy stickers that spell out his name and additional puffy pirate stickers. I'm scaring Chris.

Are you looking at the words per minute or the characters per minute? Misleadingly, characters per minute is the number at the top with words per minute hidden a bit on the left.

Alex 01-17-2008 06:45 PM

And I'd say it is a little fast since my speed is getting clocked in the mid-90s but in more official settings I've never gone reliably over 85 or so. Of course, that could be a product of not having to do any punctuation except the occasional apostrophe and by sticking to the most common words you are mostly sticking to the most common letters and that is what a QWERTY keyboard is designed to facilitate.

Morrigoon 01-17-2008 06:51 PM

Yeah, the characters per minute was like in the 700's.

Alex 01-17-2008 06:57 PM

Wow, then even if it is a bit fast in its measurement you are extremely fast.

That or your system clock is slow so that the javascript is giving you extra time. But that seems unlikely.

The internets gots faster now....

Disneyphile 01-17-2008 08:28 PM

Poor Emmy. :(

Her spay appointment is tomorrow morning, so we had to lock her up in the bathroom tonight, away from food and water. (It was either that, or deprive everyone of food and water and they'd all freak out.)

She's sitting in there, howling, and it's breaking my heart. :(

alphabassettgrrl 01-17-2008 08:59 PM

Poor Emmy! Hopefully she'll feel better soon and heal quickly from her spay.

Thurston has puffy pirate stickers on his e-collar? ROFL! It's funny when our dogs need to have one - they can't walk cuz it smacks the floor. But then bassets are just weird-shaped dogs.

Last night I got to pause live TV, and then fast forward through the commercials when I came back.

It was cool.

I'm so going to get a DVR next week. I can't handle it any more.

Of course, there may only be re-runs and lame reality shows for the next season and a half.....

I am reading this post as I am setting up my new HD TiVo (It is currently downloading the setup data - TWC will be out tomorrow to install the cable cards). Kind of funny timing.

Not Afraid 01-18-2008 01:36 AM

No! The pausing and fast forwarding wasn't a recorded show. It was just a show we were watching at it's regularly scheduled time. It was cool!!!

Love FiosTV! (Now, only if we watched TV.)

Sign of the times. When my kids see a commercial, they all yell 'Fast Forward!" in chorus. They don't know about live tv.

Yes, we got FiOS internet and cable. (We didn't get the phone service, as we decided to get rid of the land line. We never use it, and the only people who call us on it are telemarketers!)

But I'm glad DP can work with a clear conscience.

So... I got a call back to come in for an interview this Monday!

*crosses fingers*

Morrigoon 01-18-2008 03:26 PM

I can't believe I spent $22 on just four items at a supermarket today.

Well, okay, I can, because it was Bristol Farms.

Anyway, I was grazing the samples and one thing I tried I simply had to get - they had these flavored olive oils, very high quality: garlic (of course), red pepper, basil, and lemon. All of them very good... but the LEMON! Freaking amazing. Like dipping bread into lemon curd that happens to have the texture of olive oil. Okay, that doesn't make it sound appetizing, but trust me, it's amazing. $9/bottle, but I figure we spend that on alcohol at the supermarket, so why not spend that on a bottle of really fine olive oil that will only be used in small amounts anyway?

Morrigoon 01-18-2008 03:26 PM

Congrats on the inverview, BE!

Disneyphile 01-18-2008 03:49 PM

Good luck, E!!!

I have a garlic pepper pork roast in the crockpot. I love dinner that makes itself. :D

Morrigoon 01-18-2008 04:04 PM

2 1/2 hours to go... I am SO tired right now, it's not even funny.

katiesue 01-18-2008 04:21 PM

Congrats E!

Be careful Morri - Bristol Farms can be dangerous to the pocketbook, but oh so very yummy!

Gemini Cricket 01-18-2008 04:34 PM

I should be extra stressed right now with catching up on work... but I'm not.
I be on Hawaiian time, I be.

Two proposals down, four more to go... (One of them is for a big ol' musical. And one of them is for a client you all know and love. I did a small project for them last year and they liked us so much that they invited us to give a big one a shot. Cross fingers, all.)

And my eye is now in a permanent state of twitch. I think it's tired. Staring so long at a computer screen will do that to you.

Moonliner 01-18-2008 05:23 PM

Taking advantage of the one thing that makes all this cold weather bearable, I'm off for a weekend of skiing. You all behave yourselves till I get back OK?

I'll also be sure to install bullet-proof windows. ;)

Motorboat Cruiser 01-20-2008 10:34 AM

So, has anyone else noticed that celebrities seem to be dropping like flies in the last few days?

Brad Renfro
Suzanne Pleshette
Karl Karcher
Alan Melville

Seems that every morning, I hear about a new one.

Alex 01-20-2008 10:39 AM

Who's Alan Melville? I'm not finding such a celebrity (and the only one listed in IMDb died 25 years ago).

Read the NYTimes Obit page, it'll list a half dozen people a day of approximately equal prominence as Suzanne Pleshette and Carl Karcher.

Motorboat Cruiser 01-20-2008 10:44 AM

Ah, my mistake. Allan Melvin, who was "Sam the Butcher" on The Brady Bunch, as well as the voice of Magilla Gorilla, Archie's friend, Barney, on All in the Family and a number of other roles.

Snowflake 01-20-2008 02:42 PM

just walked back from the market, and I am now baking an apple pie. yum!

Strangler Lewis 01-20-2008 03:01 PM

The fact that Allan Melvin played Barney on "All in the Family" got me thinking about all the Barneys on TV: Barney Fife, Barney Rubble, Barney Miller, Barney Gumble. I'm probably missing a few. Yet, I have never known a Barney in real life.

Pleshette had that fabulous voice, and she was a very handsome woman with a knack for comedy.

As for Barney: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barney

I'd forgotten that it is a derivative (or dimmunitive) of Barnard.

I disagree. Lani and I were just commenting last night about how happy we are that we grew up in regions where putting cheese on apple pie is not the norm.

(And yes, I've tried it. I love sharp cheddar. I like apple pie. They do not belong in the same mouthful.)

CoasterMatt 01-20-2008 08:34 PM

I don't put the cheese ON the pie, just have a few slices along with the pie.

Alex 01-20-2008 08:47 PM

Well, if I ate the pie then ate some cheese (preferably drinking something in between), then I suppose that would be a different thing but most places I've seen that offer it put the cheese on the pie.

Soooo....

Yes i got my rat today. My coworker finally bought her for me. I had to get a cage and accesories but hey. Named her Gina. She's in the middle room and the cats have taken turns trying to torment her the short time she's been here.

I think MattRat would have been a good name. Too bad it's a girl! ;)

... About to head out the snowy and treacherous roads of Utah to get to my interview, which in this weather is about a good hour or so away.

I did just find out from a local friend that the commuter train should start running soon, so that's good news if I end up getting/taking this job.

Gemini Cricket 01-21-2008 03:13 PM

Everyone's leaving early today because of MLK day. (Everyone is slow slow slow.)
I think I should do the same.
:D

Disneyphile 01-21-2008 03:22 PM

CM/MMG - rats are awesome pets! Congrats on your new baby! :D

Emmy finally emerged from under the bed and is recovering nicely. She's no longer growling at us, but is now chattering at me, which is something she's never done before. Upon some research, it apparently is a way of vocalizing frustration. Good to know our kitty still hates us. ;)

BarTopDancer 01-21-2008 05:24 PM

I had the best weekend ever.

And I have no cavities!

madmonkeygirl 01-21-2008 05:42 PM

Soooo....

Ty for the congrats...Jonny and Jovi still surround her cage lmao but they will just have to get used to her. They still see her as a snack lmao...

Today was so nice not to have to go to work. And the best part of having a holiday off was that i didn't even ask for it either was given to me. :)

Cats are funny. When it comes time for bath time around here i can't ever find Steven he always hides. And Jonny once he gets his bath is so pissed off at me for giving him a bath or else CM whoever is the meanie that does it lmao...

Samwise does that. When he's pissed, he'll sort of mumble under his breath, and when he's whiny- he whines. (Meeeeeeeoooooohhhhhoooowwwww). My sister watched the animals when we were in Hawaii and she got a kick out of Sammy's vocalizations. He also growls like a dog.

I have a glass shard in my left index finger and I can't get it out. However, it sure hurts like hell now. It could be worse. I didn't cut off my thumb.

Oh, Lisa. I hope you get it out ok. It would take me twice as long to type because I only use my two index fingers! :D

Where'd the glass come from?

Sooo... I'm leaving for Sacramento in a few hours. What's the weather like up there?

A little bit cold (if you consider upper 40s to be cold) and raining a bit

Gemini Cricket 01-22-2008 10:45 AM

I hate it when people at work who are not busy (and are never busy) say that they're 'too busy to talk'. Yeah, right.

It isn't that they a re too busy to talk in general, its just that they are too busy to talk to YOU.

Seriously, it is probably that they know that if they stop to talk to you, that they might be required to actually think (gasp) or do something (the horror!).

Maybe it was the Onion/Sardine bagel I had this morning?

Funny thing is is that I'm always busy but am never too busy to talk to someone. In fact, it's always good to talk to someone because what they end up saying could make one less busy. (Or more busy, I guess...)

But to blow off someone... lame.

JWBear 01-22-2008 12:16 PM

So I've been blogging all morning on this - the Fed announced an emergency between-meeting rate cut this morning. 3/4%! Huge. And just to highlight what a big deal this is, I should point out that the next meeting of the Fed is only a week away, but they still decided to cut now (and will probably cut again at the meeting, maybe not by as much).

Cadaverous Pallor 01-22-2008 01:48 PM

Well, when the DOW took a 464 point nose dive this morning, I am not surprised (and ended the day down only 128 - a 336 point rebound)). I am interested to see what happens in the next few weeks.

The Dow is down 15.8% since the high set last October. Not quite a Bear Market (generally considered a 20% drop), but definitely more than a correction (generally considered at 10%).

In related news; in the last two days, the Nikkei has lost 9.5%, the Hang Seng has lost 14.1%, and Bombay has lost 12.4%. However, the London and German markets both rebounded slightly today after taking a dive yesterday.

Gemini Cricket 01-22-2008 02:29 PM

I go to this one take-out place pretty regularly and the guy behind the counter is without a doubt the slowest creature on this planet. Yes, he's cute and he tries hard but, dang, he's repeatedly outrun by molasses on several occasions. Zero sense of urgency whatsoever.
The take-out orders pile up behind him and all he needs to do is hand them out to the waiting customers. So, what does he do? He takes more orders. Never mind that he's the only one working the front and is responsible for handing out food too.
Yes, I'm grouchy today. But he should know that and work faster.

I'd describe myself as bottom-ish. A little bit of Ennis but a whole lotta Jack. And I don't know the rules about whether tops or bottoms give blowjobs.
;)
And, by the way, "bottom" doesn't always mean passive. When I'm in a mood, I can make a top feel like pond scum.

Ponine 01-22-2008 06:01 PM

Just to throw the thread off....
and I know, its soliciting... but I asked if it was okay before I posted.

an art friend of mine is in a contest.
A Place to Bark... and meow

Quote:

A PLACE TO BARK is a no kill foster and adoption rescue dedicated to the welfare of animals. Established in 2001, we mainly work with Animal Control Agencies, rescue animals from high kill shelters and foster them till they are healthy. This provides the best possible situation, for the animals. They are then placed for adoption through Humane Societies in various parts of the country. We cover all costs for the medical care of the animals with no cost to the Humane Societies they are going to. We also do some private adoptions after a strict screening process.

Anyway.. Parade is running a contest. The top four ( I think) people, or orgs who with the most UNIQUE donations will recieve a $50,000 grant to their cause.
Also, the donations up to $25,000 will be matched by the Zoline Foundation even if the cause does not place in the top four.
Any donation of $10 or more counts.

The art community is doing what they can, and so far she has fabulous chances of staying in the top five or however many it is.

If you look at her blog, and would like to help her achieve this goal, or know someone else who might, I ask that you pass the word. We have till the end of the month to keep her in the top.

There is a "badge" on the right hand side of her blog for donations.

Thank you so much for giving this a read!

(and for those who are curious, she's located in Tenn, so most of us are too far away to say "oh, how cute, let me drive right over and adopt him")

Morrigoon 01-22-2008 06:12 PM

Unless we're driving THROUGH Tennessee any time soon

(But both my boyfriend AND my dog would kill me if I brought home another furbaby)

And now back to your regularly scheduled posterior pun posting...

I tried looking for a room within 1 mile of the convention center a couple weeks ago. Nothing. I paid, but I'm not sure I want to go now. I'd have to stay in hotel circle to get something affordable!

Hotel circle isn't that far - and if you take the trolley it drops you off right in front of the convention center.
