since my site kept messing up... i now have a basic smugmug for my photos... and I'm busy backtracking getting them up... slowly.

Morrigoon 01-22-2008 10:44 PM

I'm at the airport, at the gate, an hour and a half before BOarding...

Alex wanted to be sure I'd make my flight ;)

BTW... this airport is starting to look like a sad mall in a mid-sized city in the 80's. No wonder we're such a joke. Although I was delighted to catch a glimpse of some of the original (and probably doomed) 60's modern decor left. There was a b blue sideways diamond backing a drinking fountain and surrounded by dark wood veneer paneling. I'd take a picture, but... (airport)

Not Afraid 01-22-2008 10:59 PM

When posting pictures of one's dog on message boards where they don't know you very well, be careful what else the picture shows (and tells about you).

Seems like a misuse of pens but I suppose it's true.

Morrigoon 01-23-2008 12:05 AM

Did you actually post that somewhere (else)? Buahahahaha....

Everybody else in this waiting area is dressd more warmly than myself... should I be worried? (yes)

Morrigoon 01-23-2008 12:28 AM

Haha... it's not bacon, but they are having trivia contests at the gate for things like free drink coupons and free onboard movies. I am amused.

Morrigoon 01-23-2008 12:35 AM

This is hilarious.. someone's given this airline a bit of the Disney touch. They started boarding with first class, anyone traveling with small kids or needing assistance and.... anyone wearing a red (their signature color) shirt.

I'm glad I didn't change after work! ;)

I had assumed you guys had invented that game on the fly. I'm disappointed.

Or maybe I'm not.

Or maybe I am. But for different reasons.

It's hard.

No, it isn't.

I love that the airline is having some fun! Mostly they're boring, stodgy, and stressed. Safe flight, goonie!

School started for us yesterday. I'm online cuz I didn't want to compete for a class this that it looks like not only will I be unable to add, but will likely drop. I have five classes if I get into the Monday night sign language one which will be too much. I'm ok with school starting, though I don't feel like I had much of a break. I'm still somehow not caught back up to myself, haven't found a steady space. Normally I do find the steadiness, especially on a break. This one was hectic and chaotic, though, always on the run.

Hopefully this means life will settle into a regular schedule though. Wish me luck!

Ghoulish Delight 01-23-2008 11:52 AM

I was once stuck on a plane on the taxi-way for over an hour (some doofus hoocked up the push-back truck wrong and it busted the front landing gear, so they had to get if fixed before we could get moving again). I remember that one of the things they did to entertain us was ad-hoc gambling. "Okay, put your name on a dollar bill, put it in this jar. If we pull your bill, you win the money!" Yeehaw.

I believe that was the flight where Robin Williams was on the plane, but that may have been a different flight on that trip.

Nah. It was a good, sharp knife so the cut was clean, and it didn't get all the way through. It's already mostly pain-free and on its way to closing up.

Mousey Girl 01-23-2008 06:51 PM

I don't know anything about hamsters (other than they are mean), but a rat's average life span is 18 months to 2 years. Squiggle will be 3 April 1st, but I don't think she is going to make it. This morning her hair was standing up, which is a sign that her ned is near. The other girls seem to be taking turns sleeping with her, keeping her warm. She is the last of her litter (her last sister died January 2nd), and she has had a good life. She needs to let go already.

CoasterMatt 01-23-2008 11:07 PM

Well, there's the Smashing Pumpkins song "Pug"

CoasterMatt 01-23-2008 11:11 PM

Pug by Ned Riley (To the tune of "Lump" by the Presidents of the United States of America)
Quote:

Pug sat alone in a doggie park
He had breathing problems, so he couldn't bark
Other dogs laughed at his pushed-in nose
His mom had one, so that's how the story goes

He's pug, he's pug
What's with his head?
He's pug, he's pug, he's pug
Is he inbred?

Pug met his owner he had missed
He went up to him and gave him a sloppy kiss
Small thing so sad cos of his face
It could be used for a rocket-landing base

He's pug, he's pug
His head's so square
He's pug, he's pug, he's pug
Got shorty hair

Arfarfarf, arf, arf-arf-arf
Arfarfarf, arf, arf-arf-arf
Arfarfarf, arf, arf-arf-arf
Arfoink!

Pug was lonely and needed a hug
He got one from the owner that he really loved
He spent each night between his sheets
But don't go mistaking it for bestiality

He's pug, he's pug
He's got no snoot
He's pug, he's pug, he's pug
But he's so cute

Does this pug have a squashed head?
I think so
Is this pug nasal-dead?
I think so
Should this pug sleep in my bed?
I think so
And that's all I gotta say about that
:D

Disneyphile 01-24-2008 01:23 PM

Well, instead of driving down here today like planned, my parents are sitting in the ER, because my mother's ignored an increasing issue for the last few weeks and now hasn't been keeping anything down for the last 5 days.

With her formerly having cancer that metastasized to the colon, this doesn't bode well.

I'm scared, yet pissed off. Why the hell did she have to wait? Why the **** couldn't she just take care of it when she first noticed?

I hate it when people are so stubborn (i.e. stupid). Do they just want the attention? Do they love misery? What the **** is it?

Pardon me. I'm hardly a ray of ****ing sunshine at the moment.

And I know what you mean. My grandmother died of a water tumor. Because she refused to have it treated until it was too late.

Wow, DP... I'll be sending some good thoughts your way, too. That's sh*tty. :-/

In other news, I did hear back on the promotions coordinator position for Salt Lake Magazine (as well as two other titles)... Seems positive so far, but the lady who will be doing the interviewing is in Boca Raton, where they publish a few other titles, and won't be back until February 10. I'm thinking good thoughts for all of you. I hate to think of your darling parents sitting in the ER. As upsetting as your mom's choices are, she is still the cutest thing. That's part of what is so frustrating!

Different keys keep sticking on this laptop. Currently it's the backspace key. It's been the - and the * keys before. Changes frequently. Stupid thing.

In other news, I like the rain. Fun to drive in it. The boys at work laughed at me the other night cuz I pounded through the puddles at the end of the parking lot. What. I like driving through puddles. I'm looking forward to tonight. Should be good ones.

DP- I hope your mom feels better soon. Hopefully whatever is wrong is minor.

Strangler Lewis 01-24-2008 05:05 PM

DP-Best wishes to your mom and your family.

Ghoulish Delight 01-24-2008 05:13 PM

DP - As someone genetically predispositioned to exactly that kind of, "Oh, I'm fine, I don't need to see a doctor," and therefore someone who's been on both ends of it...I fully understand your anger/fear/frustration (my dad came within 24 hours of death due to ignoring major warning signs). But try to understand that your mom likely is as ashamed of/frustrated with herself as you are.

It's hard to articulate, but Snowflake is right that there's an element of fear. I know better, she knew better, my dad knew better...but something not quite definable (at least not by me...else I wouldn't have this issue, would I?) just makes not dealing with it a more comfortable route. More than "more comfortable". The thought of dealing with it can be almost paralyzing. I wish it weren't so, and I hope my dad's experience will be enough of an object lesson for me to be smarter about it...but I know I can't guarantee that.

Not Afraid 01-24-2008 05:14 PM

DP, I hope it is nothing more serious than a bad case of the flu. I'm thinking about you and your family.

They did a CT scan. It's a large mass that's blocking everything. They're going to run a biopsy tonight and we'll know more. And, because of what my mom went through with the last surgery, she's arguing against being treated.

I told my dad I'll drive up there now, and I got, "Stay put and don't worry. We want you to have the party and have fun, because we want to hear all about it and see pictures. We're happy knowing you're happy. Don't make us worry about you." Yeah. Some fun. They've always taught me to be strong, and to carry on, and to push through with the good things, squeeze lemons into lemonade, yada, yada, yada. But, sometimes, it's damn near impossible to always be ****ting rainbows out of every orifice. Sometimes, strength just isn't there.

I'm so sick of this cancer ****.

Not Afraid 01-24-2008 06:13 PM

You know, DP. I say screw that and get packed. You may not be able to do anything while there, but I think you'd feel better in the long run. Can the party wait?

Gemini Cricket 01-24-2008 06:14 PM

I was going to complain about my bad day... but I suddenly realized that it ain't that bad after all.

Hang in there, Disneyphile.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-24-2008 06:58 PM

Yeah, what NA said - parties can wait. I know I would understand fully - as would anyone else.

LSPoorEeyorick 01-24-2008 06:58 PM

Oh, I'm sending you lots of energy and strength, DP - my mom has been moving into the "reject treatment" phase too, and I have found it's very, very difficult to me to deal with. But being there - seeing you in person convincing her otherwise - can make all of the difference. I agree with NA - hop in the car and go. It's your first impulse - and it's a good one.

katiesue 01-24-2008 07:01 PM

DP - NA's right, just go. You won't be sorry.

DP - get in the car and go.

Memo to KatieSue: Put down one of those pina colodas!

Prudence 01-24-2008 07:42 PM

DP: I don't know what the time frame is for the party, but sometimes having something "fun" to share can be helpful - they don't feel like they're being a burden, and you don't have to spend as much time trying to figure out what to talk about that's cheerful and non-cancer-related.

So trust your instincts. We'll be strong for you so you can be strong for them.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-24-2008 08:16 PM

Go, stay, but do what you want to do.

Disneyphile 01-24-2008 09:08 PM

My dad called. She couldn't talk to me just then, because they were putting a tube down her throat to help relieve pressure until they can at least clear everything out and do the scoping.

According to the doctor, once they do the scoping, she can come home until they have the biopsy results on Monday. So, she told my father that she wants to come here for the weekend to have fun and go to DL on Sunday. I wish IASW weren't closed. It's her favorite.

I told him to keep talking to her about the trip in May and all the fun we'll have. I think it will help keep her in a fighting mood, instead of refusing further treatment. Give her something to look forward to, ya know? She's been so excited about it - she's been buying new clothes, making plans on everything to see...

My entire life, I've never really heard my dad cry, until now.

One minute I'm pissed, then I'm crying the next. I thought we were done with the whole mess and had finally overcome it. We're close - I talk to her everyday.

Thanks for letting me just talk it out. I just don't even know what to really think right now.

katiesue 01-24-2008 09:25 PM

Hugs DP - to you and your parents.

Not Afraid 01-24-2008 09:29 PM

JWBear 01-24-2008 09:29 PM

Add me to the "Just go" camp. Do it for her, do it for yourself, do it for your dad.

On another train of thought... This is my last night in Sacramento! I get to go home to my BillyBear tomorrow! :D

Nausea sick icky icky.....and my manager pushing for me to come back to work- told her Monday for sure.....tomorrow-no way...maybe a couple hours Saturday- but doubtful if I feel like this.

heh- I did that once/ I had a fireplace in my apartment. I took all, and I mean ALL- the dead branches off our dead Christmas tree and stuffed them in the hearth- and lit it.

Trouble is- the flue was closed. It caught like crazy and flames started licking up the wall. I had a shelf above the fireplace acting as a mantle- I grabbed all the stuff off it and tore the shelf from the wall- THEN I grabbed the handle for the flue- and of course burned myself in the process.

Billows of black smoke coming from my apartment- and no one called the fire dept.

Luckily there were so many layers of paint on the wall I was able to scrub off the black soot-

I was such a dork!

Tori is counting the days until she turns 13 and can join the site. I'm thinking she'll get bored real quick, as Kingdom Hearts and Manga aren't real big topics around here. It's just the novelty of being old enough to actually post.

Btw, her's a sick girl tonight. She has had the same awful cold we've had, but she got hit worse. She went to the doc today- they ruled out strep but gave her codeine cough syrup and told us to bring her back if she's not better in a few days. Tonight, she had a coughing fit that was so bad she couldn't breathe- she was panicked and I was terrified. I finally got her to calm down so she could little bits of air in her lungs, but then her gag reflex kicked in and she started getting sick. Not good- I was scared to death that she'd aspirate, so I grabbed her and bent her over the sink until she got all that crap out of her airway. Then I ran cold water over her wrists until she calmed down enough to start breathing relatively normally. Scared the total crap out of her and me both. I had whooping cough as a kid- a very bad case- and this episode reminded me of the ones I'd had.

Now, she's doped up on codeine, got Vicks vapor rub on her chest and a heating pad over that, and propped up on pillows. Poor kid.:(

Kansas is a weird place. When Ken and I drove through there almost 4 years ago, we marveled at the amount of roadside porn shops, adjacent to convenience stores and rest stops, out in the middle of nowhere. I really tried to not use the restrooms through that stretch.

Try asking the doc for Tessalon Pearls if the coughing gets out of control. Those things totally stop the coughing, better than any of the syrups.

So, I'm a bit more calm now. Ken distracted me with some chess and fresh chocolate chip cookies. My mom's resting up at the hospital overnight, and they'll run some final tests in the morning. She's asked that I continue with the party plans, in hope that she'll make it. I'm wondering if she's just telling me that, because she doesn't want me to be upset. She's always said that it's the parents' job to worry, and not the other way around. Yeah, ok. Here's hoping it's just scar tissue that can be easily removed.

I don't handle stuff like this very well, probably because I never had a close friend or family member get critically ill or die up until 6 years ago. So, I never had to learn to cope with it. (Three of my grandparents were gone before I was born.) If I had learned the process as a kid, it'd probably be a bit easier now. Who knows.

Ok, now I'm babbling.

Strangler Lewis 01-25-2008 06:42 AM

Here in P-town, there used to be a store that sold power tools, weapons (guns & swords) and porn.

[Lashbear]: "I think her name should be Maddy-Lou-Janie-Joe-Jim-Bob"
[Mary Poppins]: "But that's going a bit too far, don't you think?"
[Bert]: "Oh, indubitably"

Betty 01-25-2008 07:05 AM

Damn - flat tire on a rainy day. Thank goodness for auto club.

Prudence 01-25-2008 07:13 AM

WB: do you have an old-fashioned humidifier? That used to be the only thing that would help me.

wendybeth 01-25-2008 09:17 AM

Luckily I bought a new one on the way home from work last night, Pru. It did seem to help- she didn't have any more coughing attacks once she feel asleep.

Ghoulish Delight 01-25-2008 09:35 AM

Ugh, I had one of those "can't breath" nights. Literally woke up unable to take a breath. 'twas bronchitis. And yes humidifier was a life-saver after that point.

It's been years since I've gone cross country like that, so I've forgotten. I did have a good laugh in some area of San Bernardino that it seemed like porn shops were on as many street corners as gas stations....

You're not babbling, DP. It makes sense understanding that it's only been a recent experience for you. It takes a long time to learn, and fortunately/unfortunately, I've had a lot of experience with it. Who knows if it makes anything any easier. Maybe your mom wants you to go on with the party, because if it's going on still, it's something to motivate her. My grandma was in the hospital a couple of years ago, and it was going to be my cousin's 16th birthday party. The two of them are very, very close, perhaps closer than she is with her own mother, and this was all on the heels of very recently losing our grandfather on that side, so my cousin was erring toward just spending time with grandma and, you know, being distressed. Grandma insisted that the party should go on, and she explained that she wanted something to look forward to.

I don't know if that's your mom's case, but it might be.

In the meanwhile, I'll keep sending healing thoughts her way, and calming thoughts to you. :)

Ok, so party is going forth as planned. Talked to my mom, and there are more complications, so she can't be here, but she flat out said, "Make it a good party. I want to see pictures, and I can't wait to get my favors."

Morrigoon just called from the open road and suggested I get a large "Get Well" card for people to sign. I know she'd love it.

Fascinating.

I've tried in on a few other vB sites. It seems to be unique to LoT, and given NA's proclivities in this area bloody funny or a bit suspicious... :D

Cadaverous Pallor 01-25-2008 05:03 PM

No wonder. NO ****ING WONDER.

I was going insane.

If I did a test post, it would work. Because I didn't use the P word. I always used the P word in my real attempted post.

I couldn't figure out why the board hated my anectdote so much.

Plus, if you search for the thread using the P word, it doesn't come up, even though the P word is in the title.

The wind is crazy right now!

I did make it out today and went to Fashion Bug and got a really pretty dress to wear to the wedding. It is black crochet/lace over a red lining. I love the way it fits! My mommy then bought me 2 new shirts, so I am slowwwwwwly increasing my "Clothes That Fit" wardrobe.

I also got to be a bitch at Kohls, which is always fun. They truly need to learn that Customer Service is not a thing of the past. I am so tired of the standard, "Then don't shop here," attitude.

Sooooo.....Got hit by a big storm today- barely made it home, and I think it may be a few days before we get dug out. Frikking snow. Enough, already!!! My sis Bobbi is stuck in Ellensburg (AKA 'the armpit of the PNW')- she got halfway home from Seattle before she decided maybe she should get a hotel room and wait this out. (My nephew was in a regional math competition over there this morning). She got what was probably the last open room in Ellensburg, as pretty much everyone else decided to stay put as well. I'll try and get some pics posted tomorrow, as the snow is very pretty and very deep. (I guess we're getting hit by Snowstorm II tomorrow afternoon).

I did manage to stop by the liquor store on the way home, though.

Sad but true: I instantly wondered which hotel she ended up in. (Inn at Goose Creek is my fav if I have to stay the night there.)

ozron 01-27-2008 01:23 AM

Wait... there are hotels in Ellensburg?

Why??

Enough with the wind already!!

I love weather changes, but this wind is driving me insane.

My mommy paid for my tree in the front yard to be trimmed. They are out there now, scaling the tree in the wind. My living room is very bright right now, without the tree filtering the light.

Ahhh....the academic competitions. Pretty much the only reason every geek in my corner of Washington knew exactly where Ellensburg was, we sure as hell were never seriously considering Eastern Washington University as an option for college.

Soooo....

I am off at a press check and there is a problem on the press. Fixable, but I am in the middle of a 45 minute wait (after a previous 45 minute delay). Since it takes a half hour to drive back to the office (one way), I got time on my hands.

Already checked and responded to all my email (surprisingly light this morning). We are not set up for telecommuting, so other than answering a few questions over the phone, I got nothing.

And I am bored.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guyz!

Mom & Dad have figured out my love of the 'nip. I turn into a playful love bug, which is great! I don't like loud and scary stuff, but they helped me figure out that I like lights and lasers, which is pretty awesome!

Oh, and thanks for the propz on the name, guyz! My dad came up with that one, and mom got the giggles over it for a few minutes. So it's, like, my official name now.

Normally, Samwise is pretty mellow for a young cat but lately he's been 'busy' at night. That means racing around the house, harassing Boris and Haggis, and when I put him in Tori's room and shut the door he's trying to climb the blinds, open the closet, knocking everything off her dresser and pulling down posters. Wild child.

Yes. Have I mentioned how much I hate California climate?

Some parts culturally would be a difficult change but I do so miss weather.

Capt Jack 01-28-2008 01:03 PM

well now...I've seen 'snow'.....but anywhere Ive seen it, its usally grey or some other 'non-snow' color, half melted, small spot bits of white or falling off buildings in the middle of NYC. that or so far in the distance that it might as well be imagination.

looks kind of pretty, but I can only imagine the frozen 773H it is to live in.

Prudence 01-28-2008 01:05 PM

WB - why couldn't you keep the white stuff to yourself? Now we have this sort of in-between amount of snow - where I feel like a big wimp if I consider staying home from class tonight, but enough that I'm really concerned about the drive home at 10pm if I do go to class - since it's all slushy and suppose to freeze over AND snow more between now and 10.

I really don't want to risk wrecking the car, but I'm worried about missing the class, too. Although it is UCC sales and that's one of the last classes I took - so I still remember some of it.

Brigitte 01-28-2008 01:06 PM

Nice pics WB :) I haven't taken any pics of it yet to send out. The piles that have fallen off the shop roof are above the doorknob level. The kids think it's great, no school, can play out in it all day. I look at it and see that our street hasn't been plowed yet and we have another foot expected by the end of the week...

katiesue 01-28-2008 01:15 PM

I miss snow. And shoveling snow. And driving in snow. And sledding. And snowballs.

JWBear 01-28-2008 01:16 PM

Wendybeth, show us those pictures again in August, and ask us if we want to trade . You might get some takers!

blueerica 01-28-2008 01:34 PM

I'd have some great pics, but around the complex there are too many cars and not enough scenery.

Took a spur of the moment trip to Wyoming yesterday, and neglected to bring my camera, since I thought we were just going to the movies. Now that was some pretty snow mixed in with mountains, cliffs, rivers. It was breathtaking and for a moment, I didn't mind the cold.

Brigitte 01-28-2008 01:50 PM

In August up here it'll be 90-100 for weeks at a time. We just have to remember what it's like on the flipside. There's something to be said for having 4 distinct seasons.

I'll ship you some if you want KatieSue :)

Ten years ago we bought a 4,000 square foot newer home, with 3 baths, five bedrooms and a huge yard for $145,000. It's nearly doubled in value, even with the housing crash. Granted, the median hourly wage here is slightly above minimum, but I feel loads better about it when I see what you all pay for real estate down there.:D

Pru- Bobbi was impressed that Seattle hadn't succumbed to the usual post-snow chaos when she was there. Of course, it was the weekend. She also said the trip over the Pass was grueling- took over three hours. When she got home she discovered that nearly all the deciduous trees and shrubs in her yard were obliterated by the heavy snow. It tried to take down our lilacs, but I went out and shook all the snow off the branches before they snapped.

Brigitte- how much did you all get?

Alex- the thought of you living here made me crack up. There is no culture in Spokane, silly!

And finally, in August it averages 100 degrees up here as well, so I may be looking back at these pictures with a bit of longing. I doubt it, but it could happen.

Alex 01-28-2008 03:38 PM

True, but I like long drives to get where I'm going.

Trust me, if the serious opportunity arose to move to Spokane (or almost anywhere else) I'd do it it without hesitation. 10 years is too long to live in one place and about 5 years longer than I ever planned on.

Agreed. But they don't need to follow her around all the time - even if she asks. They can say no, we're not going to support and publicize your downward spiral anymore. Maybe when the attention (yes, negative attention is still attention) goes away she'll go get some help.

1) Sadly, there is still a strong demand (by the paying public) to see more of the ongoing train wreck, and 2) Ms. Spears brings it on herself. If you don't want to be captured doing stupid things, then stop doing stupid things. If you don't want to be in the public eye so much, stop putting yourself in the public eye so much.

Yes, it is a bit of a chicken/egg situation, but she certainly isn't doing her part to help the situation.

Yes, the girl is troubled and needs help. But the adage that "one needs to want to change before change can occur" holds true. Every time I hear something in the news about her, I am saddened.

That was his own stupidity. He went and offered services he wasn't qualified to offer (in this state). Should the hospital have let him in? That's questionable. But he did what he did on his own (he could have said no to her family, if they did indeed ask him to help).

Stupid question time...
The dress I bought for the wedding (the one that I am going to in March) is black lace over a reddish lining. When I mentioned it at work everyone freaked out and said that you can't wear red to a wedding. They also said that the black was fine since it was an evening wedding.

This makes no sense to me. My sister's wedding was black & red. No one said anything about no red at a wedding back then. It isn't like the red is an "in-your-face" fire engine red.

So the question is, should I go ahead and wear this great dress, that looks good on me, or should I try to find something else?

Ghoulish Delight 01-28-2008 10:59 PM

Err, that sounds like a load of hooey.

Kevy Baby 01-28-2008 10:59 PM

If it were a "red dress", I might agree

But it sounds like a black dress WITH red.

I think you are okay.

Not Afraid 01-28-2008 11:24 PM

If it was 1969, iI'd caution you against wearing either black or red. Since it's well beyond 1969, I think you're fine.

nice dress

wendybeth 01-29-2008 12:46 AM

Your dress choice is more than fine, MG- it is entirely appropriate given the time of day and the time of year. (I do tons of weddings and am very up to date on trends and etiquette). I think it will look lovely on you.

Mousey Girl 01-29-2008 12:50 AM

Thank you. I thought it was pretty, and then when everyone started saying I couldn't wear red... I felt horrible.

wendybeth 01-29-2008 12:53 AM

Go, have fun, and it anyone gives you **** tell them you already cleared it with Miss Manners and she told you only a backwoods redneck moron would think it wasn't appropriate.

Alex 01-29-2008 07:23 AM

I'd say go ahead and wear it. But then I generally don't give a damn about traditions and superstitions. I wasn't aware of any general prohibition on wearing red but doing a quick Google search I see that it isn't an uncommon issue.

If you're concerned about it, I'd suggest asking the bride since hers is the only opinion you really have any reason to care about. Just tell her you found a dress you love but it is red/black and you know some more traditional viewpoints wouldn't approve and does she care.

Odds are she doesn't, but on the other hand if she does there have been far stupider bridezilla-triggered friendship schisms than that would be.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-29-2008 08:35 AM

The only color I won't wear to a wedding is white. I'd never heard the kabosh on red before.

I have a sexy red dress that I wore to at least 3 weddings. I also wore reddish-burgandy as a bridesmaid, then wore THAT dress to at least 2 more weddings.

Love your dress - unless the bride is a good friend who is (oddly) traditional, go for it.

It's a BEAUTIFUL dress, MG, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it for a wedding. Vivid colors are no longer frowned upon, and yours isn't overwhelmingly vivid anyway (since it's masked by the black lace.) But it IS lovely!

BarTopDancer 01-29-2008 09:21 AM

Beautiful dress. Go wear it!

Moonliner 01-29-2008 09:26 AM

All this wedding talk.... I'm happy to be in "The Wedding Gap"

By now everyone I know that's a gonna get hitched is hitched and the kids are still years away from this subject. No weddings on the horizon for me anytime soon.

blueerica 01-29-2008 10:23 AM

The dress is fantastic, MG! Wear it, wear it, wear it!

CP's rules are pretty correct - no white, but anything else goes.

And for me, I tend to get a bit of a stick up my ass about this sort of thing in the opposite direction. If the dress was a big enough deal that it would be shocking, horrible, or worse, ruin any friendships, well, then screw them for being a bride-zilla, mom-zilla or whatever else.

But that's just me, and I understand your concern. I have been in a similar position (which caused my current opinion).

Congratulations! Is "we" Jetset or you and Tom? Either way, much applause.

LSPoorEeyorick 01-29-2008 11:05 AM

(The "we" who got the project is Jetset. Though the Powerswaterworks/Significant Chicken production companies are collaborating on something right now, too - but unfortunately, the Mouse isn't paying our way on that one, heh.)

And, thank you all, for cheering us on! I'm still feeling excited this morning. (Not sure it will go away.)

I agree. But to the degree that there is any opinion that matters, the bride is the only one. Which is why I suggest asking her instead of us.

Whether the dress is appropriate for weddings in general has nothing to do with whether this bride thinks it is appropriate for hers.

Disneyphile 01-29-2008 11:48 AM

LSPE, I'm still dying to know the backstory on the "Significant Chicken" thing. ;) It's such a cute production name.

UPDATE ON MOM: The good news: The biopsy of the blockage came back benign. Turns out to be a completely pinched intestine due to fat compression from obesity, lack of activity, and bad eating habits/diet. The not-so-good news: There are some shadows near the original cancer site that still concerns the doctor, so once the blockage is removed, they'll have to scope again and run another biopsy from that area. So, we're not out of the woods just yet, but the doctor has finally shut up about timeframes. However, my dad just told me that my mother has not gone to a single post-cancer check-up. In the meantime, they're attempting to reopen the blockage by feeding her some small amounts of food.

Anyone got a ham I can borrow?

Brigitte 01-29-2008 12:11 PM

We just made one last weekend, so sorry, we're out ;)

Great news though that it wasn't as bad as it could have been!

wendybeth 01-29-2008 12:49 PM

Hey, we just had ham last night!:D

DP, I'm glad they found it was benign, and hopefully this will encourage your mom to be more vigilant about her health. Fingers and toesies crossed for the other tests!

blueerica 01-29-2008 01:15 PM

Yikes, DP! I hope your mom bucks up and starts getting this kind of thing checked... fear be damned!

Not Afraid 01-29-2008 01:21 PM

You know, I understand the fear factor but she needs to go to her check ups. The little victories that come with each visit - hearing the words "no sign of cancer, see you in another year" make the fear seem like nothing. AND, it holds a lot of weight for the coming year.

So I posted this in the Oscar Short swanking thread, but I realized that the people who'd likely benefit from it may already have written off the thread as LA-centric. Just in case that's true, I'm re-posting it here, so as many of the out-of-towners as possible might benefit.

Alex 01-30-2008 10:20 AM

Cool. I'll have to try and remember that. It would be very odd to go into Oscar night with an actual opinion on the shorts categories.

blueerica 01-30-2008 11:59 AM

Well, yesterday was awesome...

All day, I felt just out-of-whack. My ears were popping, I was stuffy, but I didn't have a headache. Same story today, and I think I'm just finally having a head cold without the headache of actual responsibility beyond finding jobs to apply for and doing some work if I want to. I'm just hoping it doesn't get worse, though the oddness seems more odd today. With a Job Expo (featuring a few employers that I'd love to work with out here) on Friday, I am trying to focus on feeling better so I can brave the awful road conditions out here... which brings me to my next "yesterday rocked" story.

So, last night, J and I had tickets for two Sundance "Best of the Fest" showings. With me not feeling so hot and J being tired for some reason, we were going to give away our tickets for the 9:30 show and just go to the 6:30 show, Captain Abu Raed. (IMDb link here) We were both so excited to see it. Well, on his way home, he had trouble getting off base due to the high winds and icy conditions. After getting off hase, people were sliding all around the roads, making his trip home take even longer. He got home at a time that would have been 'pushing it' had it been great weather. With this unusually crappy weather, it was just too dangerous, and we decided to make it a night at home.

On the bright side, we're safe and I didn't get more sick.

But I wanted to see that movie!

A friend had a similiar issue a few years ago. She just called the registrar of voters and they could tell her what was on file and where to go.

Alex 01-30-2008 03:02 PM

What county are you in?

blueerica 01-30-2008 03:20 PM

I used to work the polling stations (something I got into inadvertently after I was wrongly denied my ability to vote by the people working at my polls). There is a way for you to be able to do it - heck, you can even go to 'not your correct station' and there are ways they can have you vote legally, it's just a bit more complicated than going the 'normal' way.

I wish I could remember how you do it, but there is a way, I'm just pulling a blank on the specifics! Gah!

Morrigoon 01-30-2008 03:20 PM

Does anybody have any REAL info on the Indian Gaming propositions? I'd love to hear what's actually going on there.

Alex 01-30-2008 03:25 PM

State wants money. Some casinos were willing to give state more money in exchange for expanded agreements on how big their casino operations were and also some relief from certain environmental impact requirements.

These deals are unfair to other small casino running tribes operating in sparsely populated areas but the funding of the opposition is mostly from Vegas gambling interests that really don't want to see the SD and Palm Springs area casinos get bigger.

Beyond that I don't care. My view is it doesn't really matter. The Indians can legalize rape and the selling of crack to infants for all I care. It is their land, they make the rules and my preference would be that we have absolutely nothing to say in the matter. So I'll vote yes on anything any of them want.

This is one of the rare exceptions to my otherwise pretty solid "vote no on all initiatives regardless of merit since I don't approve of the initiative process" rule.

Morrigoon 01-30-2008 04:02 PM

Well, I'm just very suspicious of anything related to Indian Gaming after the stunt they tried to pull last time where they were touting some bill as getting them to "pay their fair share" (I hate that phrase), but in exchange, and what they didn't want to tell you, was that part of the initiative basically FORCED the state into perpetual renewals of the gaming agreements. Forced. As is why bother going to the trouble of "renewing" since it was for all intents and purposes perpetual and the state would no longer be able to end them.

So now I look at anything involving gaming very closely. I mean, I'm all for revenues, but I consider at what cost.

edit: okay, I'm starting a thread for this in the proper forum so we don't hijack the Sooo... thread

Alex 01-30-2008 04:05 PM

Understandable, but like I said, I'm of the opinion that the tribes shouldn't even have to have gaming agreements with the state, let alone have to go through a hassle to renew them.

So I'm an easy sell.

Plus, anything that puts legal blackjack and poker tables closer to my apartment is a net positive increase of good in the world so far as I'm concerned.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-30-2008 04:39 PM

Yeah, I've never really understood the concept of, "We've given them sovereign land...but we're going to pass laws that govern how they run it." It's either sovereign or it ain't.

So my Mom lands at 9 PM. Come home, start cleaning. Put a load in the washer. Go back in there and some weird error reading on my washer. Great. Try it again, no sound of water going in. Come in and check the other faucets - yup no water.

Call the after hours. Water main break. So can't clean very well with no water. Then the hot water heater starts making this high pitched, loud squeaky noise. Call after hours again. They send the guy over and it stops literally as he's at the door. No water until a minimum after midnight.

Ugh!

Sorry to hear that. If the water is off, you might want to turn off the water heater. If it's an electric water heater, and there is a heating element near the top of the water heater, it will burn out if the water level goes below it.

Egads!!! I just read these last few posts....a few weeks ago we had no water....don't know if this situation would have applied but before that a plumber was pointing out our water heater and saying it needed some type of release thing-a-ma-jig or else if something happened we could have a problem with it overheating or something.

Damn. I should pay better attention. In my defense, I was terribly ill when he came by. And, he turned out to be a shiester. Haven't called him back.

Glad to hear all is well. Right?

GC~ a dream about Garth Brooks? Now what brought that on? Were you a fan before all of the subliminal suggestions? :D Just curious. Cause I once had a dream about Kid Rock. Thank God I awoke prior to anything really happening....I never ever ever ever had a positive thought about that man....

I think your plumber was talking about a Temperature Pressure Relief Valve. Here are some good pictures of what can happen if if fails.

Given the opportunity, do you go to Orlando for two days (well, redeye landing Saturday morning, redeye out Sunday night) because the fates have aligned so you can have a last hurrah with your soon-to-be expat family? Or do you try to see them some other time and save your money for an Orlando trip later on?

I ask because... that seems to be the situation here. Tom's new gig (you'll love it but I'll let him tell you about it) will allow him to take that weekend (and pretty much that specific weekend only; fates aligned) off but no other days around it. I could take an extra day or two there, but I'm sad that I'd miss him, and that we'd be rushed trying to cram in his first WDW experience in just two days there. And not even two full days... I couldn't, for instance, take him to Boma one night and see IlllumiNations another night. (And I know better than to imagine we could swing both.)

But then, I am reminded that the trip isn't about him, it's about the expat family. I would really like to see them before they depart for Milan.

Nevertheless, we're just not a vacation-without-each-other couple, and those two days are going to be whirlwind. I probably have the vacation days available to go back, but we have broader travel interests than going to Orlando twice in one year.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-31-2008 12:49 AM

Oh, 2 days would never be enough for me. ;) But I don't think I would consider that a vacation at all nor a "two times this year" since the focus realy isn't the Parks.

News from the Frozen North:

We're getting hit with another major storm; outside, the wind is howling and snow is pouring. Can anyone say 10 foot drifts? The area schools are still closed, which is virtually unheard of up here, especially for this duration. They gave up and said no classes until next week. I may try to go to work tomorrow, but if we get more than 3-4 inches of snow I'm stuck home. I'll be sure to post more pics so all you SoCal people can mock me.

YIKES!!! Yes, that is what he said we need. We have the valve part, just not the tube part. Which, he said would leave water to shoot all over the place, burning us. He never said all of that would happen!!!! Is this a legally required piece???

Oh, and, I found out what was driving the cat nuts...a mouse! Hopefully just one. Damnit.

blueerica 01-31-2008 09:07 AM

Ugh, WB! We're expecting more here, which is starting to become depressing. I'd rather have one giant storm that keeps everything from moving than one that keeps me digging out my car when I want to go somewhere and makes everything really dangerous on the roads. I think we're getting you're follow-up storms... :( It's as though the weather is mocking my noobie-ness out here. Snow, snow, snow... glimmer of hope... haha! More snow!

Still feeling under the weather out here. The head cold is slowly getting worse, and I'm not sure what's up with it. I am still going to try to make it out to a job expo in south Salt Lake, which is quite a distance, mostly because there are a couple of companies attending that I am really interested in meeting face-to-face. The snowy/icy roads aren't making it any more appealing, so we'll see how the weather pans out for tomorrow morning.

BarTopDancer 01-31-2008 09:11 AM

Wendy! Don't go out! They're having avalanches!

BarTopDancer 01-31-2008 09:20 AM

The valve is the important part for safety, so you are ok. The tube just keeps any overflow water from doing any water damage.

Wendy- stay safe and warm indoors. I saw the avalanches last night and thought of you. I hoped you were all safe and at home. Doesn't hot chocolate sound good right about now?

We are lucky our storm has already passed through with the snow. The wind is nasty though abd makes the child paranoid. He walks around with a flashlight just in case the power goes out! I see the Cascades are getting hit pretty hard though.

wendybeth 01-31-2008 10:08 AM

I think the avalanches are all over in Pru's part of the state, although there may be some going on at the ski resorts here that I haven't read about yet. We got about three inches of snow, which isn't too bad but considering they haven't plowed our hill yet makes traveling to work out of the question. We're also supposed to be getting more snow until later this afternoon. Hey, Erica- what say you and I skip out of this snowy crap and head to warmer climes- like Fiji?

Whew! Thank you for posting that!! Now we just have to clean the garage in the event that anything does ever happen.....

The Aussies are just heading back to school...it is their 'fall' time of the year. Trips me out to hear about my friend at the beaches, pool, while back here it is cold!! {no avalanches here, though...}

Brit in a 5150. Hmm. Well, can't she leave if she wants? Even if they have her in there can't she just leave? Unless someone else {maybe in charge of her? I don't know...} signed some papers? The thing is yep, 72 hours isn't enough. If she will stay, and, take the meds they prescribe {which can take up to 2 weeks to work/have effect} and have counseling and therapy, maybe, just maybe that will help. But, she also has to fix things at home, grow up.

I know she is f'd up, I really hope though, for the sake of her mere being a human and the fact she has kids {what a sad legacy to leave for them} this works out.

Went for a walk with my buddy this morning {we've been going for almost two weeks now, I think, if not more, except weekends}. She has problems with her feet and she doesn't move at a very quick pace. I promised I would not kill her, that I will walk slowly up hills and that I will pay attention to her breathing. Well. I noticed that she is not breathing as heavy and we actually arrived home earlier than usual but we left later!!!!

I can't wait to tell her. She will be so happy and I am so proud of her.

Is anyone else here on a weight loss/exercise program with a buddy? I am trying.

madmonkeygirl 01-31-2008 12:30 PM

Soooo....

MouseWife i am on a diet. Been almost 4 weeks tomorrow actually. No sodas, no fast foods, etc. I've lost some weight and inches off. I need to exercise more though. but hey it's a start. And i don't even crave french fries either. Burgers now and then but the craving will subside. Just the whole warm weather spring then summer and shorts, tank tops, bathing suit. So ya that did motivate me. I admit it i let myself go the past couple of years and wanted to make a change.

She can't leave - the 5150 is a danger to self or others and is signed off on by a judge. She can't be forced to take medication or participate but if she doesn't, they can extend to a 14 day hold where they can forcefully medicate.

BarTopDancer 01-31-2008 12:46 PM

On the diet/exercise note -

For the most part I cut out high fructose corn syrup. I do notice a difference in how I feel if I eat something with it in (I look after the fact, not before - it's not a placebo effect).

I'm also back running 4-5 times a week.

madmonkeygirl 01-31-2008 01:13 PM

Soooo....

I can not wait til April and wearing tank tops and shorts. :) Finally to look good in them for a change. :) Plus my concerts and being up on the side stage i want to look GOOD. I have a friend who said she will take pics of me up there as proof i was that close to the stage (closest i will have ever been) and as a souviner as well. And heck if Jon or Richie come over the better. :)

Gotta love California. Even with this endless series of storms we've been dealing with lately, we managed to catch a one-day break with lots of sunshine and 62 degree weather. I was in shorts and a tee yesterday, and it was fine.

I'm glad I don't want to make it out of Oregon right now. The passes are closed in every direction, um do you think it's gonna snow:rolleyes:

The sucky part is Gary is trapped over a couple of those passes. If he makes it home then he has to fight the other direction on Monday. I can't remember if there are actual passes on the way to Seattle. Hmm, I guess I should go look that up.

I lost track of how many guests were rude or in some cases pushing the boundaries of abusive, my backpack broke, and then I almost got run over by a fire truck (actually damaged my left shoe).

Surprisingly, the universe is depressingly unconcerned with a good party.

However we could plan a combo mock-NYE / End of the world swanking for December 20th. We just need to find a truly swank location that will let us pay in full after the event.

Soooo.....Bobbi (my sis, for those who have not met her yet) got a surprise at work today that somewhat altered our DLR plans in April. Her boss, who is a very cool guy and appreciates all her hard work for the firm, gave her a surprise: a room for five nights at the Grand Californian and park hoppers for Bobbi and her son. She contacted the hotel to see if they could put us in an adjoining room, but they couldn't guarantee it, so she transfered us all to a suite. Her boss's gift cuts nearly $3,000 off the cost, so it's actually going to cost us less than the DLH suite. We are going to be living at the Hearthstone!:D

(Well, we'll take park and potty breaks, but that lounge is pretty damned comfy).

Yeah! Hey, cutting out that stuff really can make a big difference. And, yes, if you exercise more you will burn more calories. Cardio is great. I think when you move it up a step with exercise, you will be amazed at the next step of your results! *schnapp!!* {and, you'll look great when you meet Jon!!}

Thank you, BTD. Dang it that they can't force her to take meds. It is what she needs. I just watched on one of those tabloid t.v. shows that she went willingly. It really did break my heart. I don't know much of her celebrity, really, so I can't grasp all of that. But, I just see a young woman and my heart breaks for her.

Ooo, running!! I haven't been running. I know I need to but I will gradually get back to it after I've been walking more. I know it shows excellent results. Must get back to it.

LSPoorEeyorick~ My hubby is my buddy in this pursuit.
That can be a lot of fun. Especially since you probably consume a lot of meals together. For me, I started on my own. My hubby was too advanced for me physically so I did the majority of my weight loss on my own, or, walking with my buddy. But, together, it does work better.

Big support hugs to everyone, it can be quite difficult. Emotionally and physically. It is hard to become so physical, and then, when we start to lose the weight, people do start to treat you different and you will feel much different. Like you did before you gained the weight. It is a wonderful feeling. Mixed with fear of making sure you keep up with the workouts so you can still fit your new wardrobes.....yeah....I know that one....

Keep it up. So much to do in this life {until what 2012?} and a lot easier when we weigh less.

Alex 02-01-2008 10:33 AM

Yeah, they seem pretty popular. My thought when I see them is "you know, you only look slightly less stupid* than the hummer drivers."

*No insult meant to anybody here who drives either vehicle, there's nothing wrong with stupidity so long as it is congenital and not willful. Plus, while I can think of no valid reason for driving a hummer, maybe these FJs are actually useful off road vehicles so if you actually off road in one you may not actually be stupid. So, if you drive one and don't feel you're stupid just assume I'm excluding you from the stupid group and it'll save us all a lot of emotional frooforah. Plus, even if you're stupid that doesn't mean you aren't a perfectly nice person so long as we don't leave you alone with sharp objects, electrical outlets, and too much time on your hands. But if you're primary use of such vehicles is to transport your 1.7 kids to Macaroni Grill for a 2,300 calorie bowl of spaghetti then I may seek out opportunities to do just that; if I offer you a letter opener and some alone time in my foyer closet you might want to decline.

But you know, now that I have learned you cannot open the back door without the person in the front seat opening their door, and removing their seat belt, and you are insane enough to take your kids in the backseat to the Macaronia Grill two miles away in an FJ Cruiser,
then you're on your own with Alex.

Love ya, Alex.

Well, I have to admit, I have an SUV that does take up too much damn gas. But, it is exactly what we wanted. It is 4WD, we have a Yakima, bike rack, iPod adapter, um, hell, I forget what else BUT it is our car for road trips. We love to go out into the snow but honestly the most off roading we do is at dirt parking lots. I'd love to upgrade to a newer more fuel efficient model but we have all of the bells and whistles for our trips, just want to keep it in good shape. {Oh, and without a new payment, we can afford to take the trips!}

For better gas mileage, we did get the Hubster a nice little Saturn. It has a lot of nice features, and, we use it to save gas on closer trips {like to Disneyland}.

Capt Jack, that is too funny! Exactly!!!

I love the Jeeps, though. Oooo, you guys who love cars, this morning on our walk, we saw a very old Datsun pickup, it was soooo tiny, do not know the year. Right in front of it was a Datsun wagon. Hubster and I went nuts over them, we had a new Datsun, and this one looked way older. Must run since it was parked on a public street, right?

absolutely LOVE the original LC's. was always told early on that if you ever see one by the side of the road, its out of gas as they never break. always remind me of the early dodge powerwagons (that, except for rust, were also virtually indestructable)

Not related to the Super Bowl. ;)

It's just another wedding, but they purchased one of my mid-sized packages, and are paying $250 additional for mileage, so it works. Sadly, the groom got a call from their original videographer just two days ago, stating that he doesn't have any equipment of his own. And, he was charging him $800 just to operate someone else's equipment. I was like a breath of fresh air to the couple. ;)

So, we're trekking out to Congress, AZ at the buttcrack of dawn tomorrow.

Some nearby friends are putting us up that night, which should be an adventure, because it will be dark when we try to find their place... a 40-acre homestead about 4 miles down some unmarked dirt roads.

Awesome. ;)

That's awesome! Just be careful on the roads out there. I've never been to Congress, but I'm not terribly fond of that stretch on the 93 outside of Wickenberg.

If you're using it as a commuter vehicle, and the commute only involves freeways: pretty much just as stupid.

blueerica 02-01-2008 02:33 PM

Grats, DP!

In SUV related topics, I wish I had 4WD out here. I'd really only put it to heavy use three months out of the year, and probably only this year since it normally doesn't snow like this, but I really wish I had one.

Oh, and a rock hit my windshield. I just replaced the windshield about 4 months ago, so even though it's just a chip that I can have sealed up, it's a big bummer. :(

My new office shares a wall with the 2nd floor lobby. There is a baby in there that has been screeching at the top of its lungs, continuously, for the past 20 minutes. I'm beginning to contemplate mayhem....

Morrigoon 02-01-2008 04:45 PM

AUUUUUUGH!!!! I'm just so freaking stressed right now.

Trying to figure out how to get enough time off to go up and visit my dad, who is not only in the ER right now because chemotherapy is kicking his ass, but he's got to go in for another scoping because he hasn't kept food down for 6 days. And Disney hasn't posted the schedule for the following week, so while I'm working on trading away my Saturday shift, I don't even know what I have on Sunday, so I can't make arrangements to give it away, and I'm only really able to deal with shift trades on weekends. And it makes sense for me to make a longer weekend of it, so I'd like to come home on the Monday, but that means getting permission to take a day off my other job, and I can't get a hold of any of the people I have to check with in order to take time off. And all of this is uber stressful because right now Southwest is having a fare sale to get up there but you have to buy a week in advance so I need to decide TODAY if I'm going to go up there next Friday night.

Disneyphile 02-01-2008 04:50 PM

Sorry for the stress, Goonie. :( I know too much of what you're going through.

We're totally doing a drunken kareoke night soon, and cast family medical woes to the fire, hopefully in the same evening.

Hang in there, and be sure to take a few moments out for yourself, occupied with thought of the good things that are happening right now too. Any little thing that makes you happy can help wonders.

I'm here for ya!

Sohrshah 02-01-2008 05:13 PM

:( *hugs*

Well, you have a ride home from LAX on that Moday, if you need it.

'Phile, that sounds like a good idea, too... I've got a few things to toss in the fire myself....

madmonkeygirl 02-01-2008 05:16 PM

Soooo....

Cindy sorry to hear about your dad and the stressful situation you're in. (((((((HUGS)))))))))) to you.

I hear ya...i am sick. Went out for one errand this morning came home and am on the couch. I should be doing a million things since i have the time off but no i can't seem to get up from the couch at all no energy to.

BarTopDancer 02-01-2008 05:48 PM

Ugh Cindy!

I'd book the flight and then worry about the shifts. Family medical emergencies - call in sick next Monday if you have to.

Morrigoon 02-01-2008 06:00 PM

I got hold of my bosses and got Monday off. Now I just have to get Saturday and Sunday off from the Mouse. Sounds easier than it is, especially since the schedule for that Sunday isn't out yet, and I need a manager's approval to trade to "off" with someone.

Sohrshah 02-01-2008 06:02 PM

The Mouse seems to be causing more stress than its worth these days. :(

Morrigoon 02-01-2008 06:03 PM

Yeah, but $300/mo less would be pretty stressful too. I'm behind on my bills as it is.

Oh, and I DID book the flights. Flying out Friday night, coming home Monday midday.

Snowflake 02-01-2008 06:05 PM

Good for you Morrigoon. Good thoughts for you and your parents.

Morrigoon 02-01-2008 06:14 PM

One nice thing is I was able to coordinate with my stepmother's sister so that we come up at the same time, and while I'm visiting with dad, her sister can take her out for a bit of break time and some sisterly kvetching.

Too true... well, hopefully it will become a good thing once again as your life begins to calm back down. *hugs*

I am SOOOOOO stoked for tomorrow's shoot now. Well, not as much for the actual shoot, but for the other stuff that we'll get to scout for mine and Ken's independent series project. :D

It's like the universe plopped this one right in my lap. I'm giddy as hell over it too.

You should send that in to the Readers Digest... they have a page for people like you. :p
(actually, you should post it in 'Open Mic' :snap: )

Anyway, here we are in Forster, and Stoat's making Piroshki's for Late Lunch.

I've just gotten over a flu-like attack with sneezing & coughing fits (see, even in Summer, guys)

I want to see Sweeney Todd, but Stoat hates the concept of a musical based on Cannibalism. I assured him it was a gay romp, but he's still adamant. So I'll wait until it's on DVD. (besides movies are too expensive now that we're saving up for japan.)

ALSO: I'm going to update the Japan LoT Meet details shortly, there's been a slight change of date (actually an extra day in the middle so we can throw my MIL on the plane home).

Anyway, I'll get off the Pootie, because Stoat wants to put in a rare appearance.

Hugs to all.

Snow, MMG and everyone else who is sick: me, too! For the last six frikken weeks! We all need to get better asap.

Wendybeth i couldn't agree more. I think i already posted that the dogs woke me up extra early (morning i could so sleep in). Ran to Target grabbed a salad and tea for lunch brought it home and stuck on the couch sick as a dog. :( I had soup for dinner. Just glad i have one more day off from work tomorrow. Then i have to push myself. I need to get better Jovi in two months and 3 days.

MouseWife 02-01-2008 09:43 PM

Oh you Lashes!!

Er, ah, your 'Autumn', you mean weather wise, right? I guess here, it coincides with going back to school so I equate that with fall. For us, that would be September, when the kids normally start a new school year.

Aw crap, but, now with year round school, kids go back in August, more and more.

LOL Datsun cogs!!!! No, I hadn't heard. ;)

Miss you guys, you should post more often!!!

Morri, I hope things can work out for you. It would be nice if someone in HR could just take over the responsibility of assigning that shift, being that this is a family emergency.

I keep wanting to take the first "e" out of "foreseeable" and put it into "judgment". And I'm pretty sure that last night I had dreams about whether there were any genuine issues of material fact.

I really wish I could just fast-forward through to March.

lizziebith 02-02-2008 04:10 PM

Sheesh, I've been gone a while... I've been working at home -- LONG hours! Like, almost all the awake ones. :D Doing the family business thing. Woo-hoo, and it is finally starting to pay off! Better salary than the old studio job, and while I don't have much time to surf anymore, I'm way happier. Now that I've got everything set up, I can relax a bit!

We're doing a lot of business travel this year. I'm mulling over an offer to go to Buenos Aires! I've not been to South America yet...

I've lost 10 pounds already on Weight Watchers (3 weeks in). My Dad is responding well to chemo and will celebrate his 70th birthday this week. My sister is getting married to a guy we love. I get to work on the sequel to "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" in a few weeks. I think my doodles are going to go pro this year. Hubby is celebrating 40 years in the biz, and his 60th year on this dizzy, delightful orb.

2007 was all of teh suck. 2008 is so far 200gr8!

Miss you LoT-ers, and will try to get back here more frequently!

Kevy Baby 02-02-2008 04:55 PM

Looking over that post, I realize it reads like the worst sort of Xmas letter...but really, the last time I was posting here regularly, I had such bleak outlook, and things just sucked so badly, that I wanted to share some of the good stuff for once. And things ARE good now. Thanks for the "Wow!", Kevy...that is exactly what I need to keep telling myself! Life ain't so bad these days...:)

I used to have a link here back in the old days. We tried to start the visual equivalent of the "open mic" thread back then. alphabassettgrrl 02-03-2008 12:06 PM

MouseWife- that's awesome that your friend is making noticeable progress in the walking! Having a buddy definitely helps.

I'm not on the buddy system so much, but I am trying (and mostly succeeding) to avoid sodas and corn syrup. Some days I do better than others. I agree about the french-fry craving going away. I can even eat fast food and leave the hubby's fries untouched, or only eat a couple of them. Trying to eat more at home, where I have control over my food.

I'm just glad that I made it through the December non-exercise/crazy time without gaining any weight. Now I'm back on the bike as long as the weather holds, and I'm hoping now I can start losing again. I'm excited because my friend is working out on her stationary bike, and is hoping in a year or so she can go biking with me on the trails. :) That'd be fun. She won't be able to keep up with the group right away so it'd be just she and I, but that's ok too.

alphabassettgrrl 02-03-2008 12:15 PM

Yay for good things for you, lizziebeth! :)

Disneyphile 02-03-2008 11:11 PM

Well, we're home from the job. More on that later.

I returned to a call from my mother, still in the hospital and very stressed out. My sister and father are being mean to her, constantly tearing into her for not going to the hospital sooner, telling her that it's her fault she can't walk more, because she let the arthritis get to her and refused knee replacement a couple years ago, and that if she makes it out of this, she needs to have her knees replaced or my father will leave her. Not the time and place, people!!! Then, my father called, and said, "Your mother is looking for sympathy. Don't give it to her. It's her own fault that she's still there."

That's it.

Ken and I were setting aside a small amount from this job to go to dinner at the Edison. Instead, I'm calling my favorite florist in Vegas tomorrow, and telling them to send over a colorful bouquet with a plush Mickey. The family has given her nothing, and my sister even complained to her today about having to go over there for a couple hours every other day. Seriously, WTF?!?!

I told my father that I'll remember to not give sympathy if he ever ends up in the hospital, since he'll have obviously put himself there. I also pointed out to him that he was whistling a much different tune last week before the biopsy results were in, and his only rebuttal was that he was just tired and hungry and "didn't know what he was saying" last week. Yeah, right.

alphabassettgrrl 02-04-2008 02:12 AM

Sheesh, I've been known to be brash and blunt, but really, there's a good way and a bad way to say those things, T. Cruelty is not inspiring and won't help your mom get healthier with her lifestyle.

Hope your mom enjoys the Mickey and the flowers. She is having problems. Sure she may have aggravated them by her behavior, but she could still use a little encouragement.

wolfy999 02-04-2008 07:59 AM

Hugs to you DP! Family can be so hard to deal with sometimes! Send love to your Mom from the Wolfpack!

blueerica 02-04-2008 09:10 AM

Wow, DP... that's rough. Well, we're still hoping she pulls through everything and gets the recovery and continues to be encouraged to keep on top of her medical issues. It's not easy, and certainly no one needs to coddle her, but I can't imagine threats (such as those, which have nothing to do with the real life threats her medical conditions may present) being any help at all.

swanie 02-04-2008 12:03 PM

Well, we didn't get one of the puppies from the breeder here in AZ :( In fact, I just found out we've lost out on an 18 month old male too from TX.

Now we're on a list for a litter that is due on the 19th, but the breeder is hesitant to place a puppy in a home with a preschooler. She says that we won't know until they do their temperament testing at 7 weeks whether one of the puppies would be an "appropriate fit" for our household.

We obviously wouldn't try to bring a puppy into our home if we thought we couldn't handle it, but we may be excluded simply based on the age of our youngest daughter!

This just sucks

Disneyphile 02-04-2008 01:34 PM

Swanie, I hope you get your pup!

I called the florist near Mom's hospital and placed the order. Sometime in the next couple hours, she'll receive a very colorful and fragrant basket, accompanied by a plush retro Mickey. I can't wait for the phone to ring. :)

We have a stinky kitty named Haggis (primarily because she cuts some real reekers, and also because she's a Scottish Fold). Tiny- only about the size of your average 4-5 month old, but man she can clear a room!

Tori really needs to quit blaming the cat!

Markus is being psycho. Seriously.

Out of nowhere, he comes flying from the left side of the couch, all four paws outstretched and mouth open, like he'd just been launched from a cannon. Then, he proceeds to run around.

Just when I think everything has calmed down because he's been sitting on the little rug, he leaps onto the side table where I have my glass of water, and flies at me from that side. Instinctually, I put my hand up to protect myself and block him completely. I'm surprised the glass didn't knock over.

Kitty's still going at it, and I hope he calms down soon. Previous to this, he was sitting on my lap, only to turn around and bite me. I think he's not happy with J being out of town.

Sounds like Markus is getting his happy on.:)

Is there a bug in the room?
Flying cats usually mean flying bugs, but not always.

Or that they have been into the catnip.

Maybe he's a Patriots fan? :)

Sasha periodically just has complete spastic fits at night - running up and down the stairs, slamming into the sliding glass door - general cat olympics.

Meanwhile - I think I might have a stress fracture in my foot. Has anyone else ever had one? It hurts when I put weight on it, and has on and off for a couple months, but now it REALLY hurts when I put weight on it, or drive, or do just about anything. It hurts on the outside edge of my foot, about midway between toes and ankle. Doesn't feel like a muscle issue.

George the cat is angry. I am actually wearing my fuzzy bathrobe for once rather than letting him sleep on it. He keeps sitting behind my computer chair and has wapped me twice with his paw so far.

I haven't ever had a stress fracture, but what you're describing sounds like what I have had for about a week and a half. I didn't DO anything to it, but I did walk a lot that weekend. It only hurts when I put weight on it. Very annoying.

My pain is closer to the ankle, but also on the outside edge of my foot.

I have no idea.

Wish I could help you, but I can suffer with you. Not helpful, I realize.

I feel your pain. My cat, Haggis, has been 'snuggling' with me this evening, which is an exercise in pain for any snugglee. She sits on your lap and if you move, touch her or do anything that might displease her she smacks you with her paw and yowls at you. Then, she settles her little Scotty fold ears even lower onto her head and glowers at you as she gets comfortable again.

Maybe that's it. I guess I was just more worried since he was really needy all day. I think he misses my boyfriend, who will be out of town for another 2.5 weeks in Iowa. It's not that they're snuggly together, but they talk to one another a lot. Who knows? Kitty Olympics seems logical, since I still can't get that image out of my mind of Markus flying at my face with all his paws coming at me. If only I had a camera!

Have you ever had arch problems in the past? I had issues with my feet for a while when I was 19-20. I was already going to a physical therapist for a back injury, so I asked the doc about my leg pains. He said my Converse were causing the problem, and that I had high arches. As my feet were being more flattened out it was causing stress on the rest of the system, which caused pain that was shooting up to my knees. I still wore my Converse from time to time, but not nearly as often.

I also probably have a stress fracture in my left ankle, being uninsured has prevented me from finding out what I need to know, though. From what I understand, it's not the kind of thing that really heals at all. Just give your foot all the support it can get?

Sorry you're having issues with it. It's troubling to feel like you can't walk or stand because of pain that isn't identified.

Pru

I have no idea, but I recommend and hope you are going to Doctor to have yourself looked at. Then again, the competition at MA might prefer you not....

BE, your cat may very well be missing the other human in the house. My husbands little girl kitty misses him terribly when he's gone. It's not like he feeds, waters or cares for them but he does coo to them. His little one freaks out if he calls and leaves a message on the machine. She will fly over the computer to get to the answering machine! So now when he's out of town he calls at least once for the cats, it usually calms them down.

BarTopDancer 02-05-2008 10:31 AM

Tigger goes nuts when my mom is in Canada. He wanders around lost, lonely looking for her. Springer and Boo are a lot more needy when she is gone too. It's not like they don't already spend all day with my dad, but when my mom is gone it's a whole other story.

Did you feel a little like the kitty on the left in this picture?
