Um... yeah. I got the job I wanted. I didn't know if pay was to be negotiated, but she offered me what I was going to start with for my negotiations, so I took it. So yeah. Offer in writing forthcoming. And two weeks vacation. Which means, California here I come. And I got a job.

Well, I would venture to guess that there are episodes of South park based on some place called Imaginationland and those particular episodes are being released on digital media known as "DVD"

But that is just a guess.

Disneyphile 03-11-2008 08:35 PM

Aw. I just found Glinda dead. :(

She must have had a bug or something - she was up playing and eating today, and had lots of energy. And now... ugh. I swear, that's the worst part of pet mice - they're so tiny and can have something silently wrong with them and just instantly keel over within a week or two of bringing them home. She's the third one I've had to ever do that. Because of that, I make a point to not get too attached for about a month. They're definitely not as hardy as rats.

Poor Elphaba's all alone.

I will have to go to a different shop this week and get her a new Glinda to play with, after I see that she's staying healthy.

CoasterMatt 03-11-2008 08:53 PM

I guess Elphaba isn't very popular.

So I went to Walmart to purchase some new socks and "underthings" as they are known to the worldly folks. I'd rather buy tampons and Vagisil then go up to the register with "underthings.

Lucky for me Walmart has a register that is automated and you just do everything yourself. So I ring it up and put in the money and the "underthings" are secured in the bag when the register freeks out and a worker comes over.

So she comes over and starts with the flirting - "Oh you broke it -giggle" - bangs on the register, then from the bag falls the "underthings" with a thud.

I don't think I will go back to that Walmart now...

A tip for everyone -- why spend $$ on condoms?

Go to a gay pride event, any gay pride event. Seriously. They hand em out in droves. You'll walk away with enough condoms and lube to last the entire year, and then some, even if you're a little slutty. ;)

Well, given the benifit of doubt that you don't know me THAT well S, I will say it's not da rubbers. Plus it's an "under" not an "over" but there is elastic involved...

My lesbian coworker would always bring me handfuls after a night at the bars - I had no need for them so they accumulated in my desk drawer with the other office supplies. Makes me wonder what anyone thought if they were looking for a paperclip.

When I was 8, buying girlie stuff was mortifying. Now, I know which ones to get and have no problem with making the purchase.

Whip out a DVD of "The Holiday" or "Love Actually". Both awesome, romantic films :)

Watch The Notebook and Away from Her then append the closing line to the video:

"May your marriage last long enough that eventually you have to go through that..."

My sister gave us a laser disk copy of Muriel's Wedding as a wedding present. She had never seen it or knew anything about it, but her rationale was that it had "Wedding" in the title and she knew we were into laser discs.

We sat down one evening to watch it for a "we're newlyweds; let's have a romantic evening together" night. Um, no.

Moral of the story? Don't watch Muriel's Wedding for inspiration.

Soo, the boy and I get to stay the night with the sharks on Monday. Our aquarium is doing home school days and we found out they had a program for families to spend the night in the shark tunnels. We went to their day last month and Zach saw a shark autopsy. He's been going on about it since. That's when we heard about sleeping with the fish. Thanks guys..it was hard for me to write about it because I was so in shock all day. Planning to attend one service...then getting calls and texts to find out about the need for another. I'd been talking with my stepmom about coming out in April to see Dad and she was so frantic to let me know to change my flight. Now not for a visit, but a service. :( My Dad donated his body to a local U. for research and that makes my sad heart happy. My sis said it's the ultimate in recycling. Now I want that in my will too.

I'll probably regret not adding him to my collection. Hilarious, isn't it?

This just in: My director's chair. :D I'm having a happy moment. Yay! (This will probably only last about two minutes, so bask in my glow while you can.)

Now, I just need to see if the back is embroider-able, and if so, I know who to hire. ;)

And if not, I wonder if I can have it silk-screened?

Ponine 03-13-2008 01:36 PM

As long as it comes OFF of the chair, you should be able to do either one.
Wether you use your LoT contacts or pay to have someone do it for you.

Morrigoon 03-13-2008 01:46 PM

Here's an interesting event - an LA garden tour of great gardens that use at least 50% native plants: http://www.theodorepayne.org/Tour/tour.html

Oh, and Dphile: the other option available to you is to have your embroidery done on a separate piece of cloth, then sew the cloth onto the chair back (which in theory could even be done by hand if necessary). This has the added benefit of no backside of embroidery being visible.

mousepod 03-13-2008 02:22 PM

New coffee flavors!! New coffee flavors!!

I've just discovered that the powers that be have added 2 new flavors of coffee to your selection at work. Red letter day!

Capt Jack 03-13-2008 04:34 PM

Im jealous

BarTopDancer 03-13-2008 04:38 PM

Me too. We have craptastic coffee here.

blueerica 03-13-2008 04:51 PM

I can't wait to find out how the coffee is at my new job. Even if it's crappy, I'll be happy there's coffee there... for now. Until I start up a coffee fund and/or pull something together for better coffee, since it appears as though my entire department drinks coffee.

Ghoulish Delight 03-13-2008 04:53 PM

Don't get too excited. I'm trying to get through a cup of the first flavor. "Kenya Delight" or some such. Bleh. Even setting the machine to double strength, it's weak coffee. Powerful weak.

Disneyphile 03-13-2008 08:00 PM

The director's chair is SOOOOOOOOOO comfy. In fact, it's the most comfortable folding chair I've sat in. It has a bit of spring to it and excellent support, and is extra roomy.

It has a built-in side table that is super sturdy and a good place to set my camera while changing tapes or batteries. It's also large enough to hold a clipboard flat. And it has a fancy "cargo" panel on the side with zippered pouches of various sizes.

Best $40 ever. :D

Mousey Girl 03-13-2008 09:10 PM

I have an interview at the job I want tomorrow, during my lunch at the job I can't stand.

it isn't that the current job is mindless and repetitve, and way below my skill levels, but I don't have a proper place to do the work, so it is agrivating my back, shoulder and wrist.

Yup. Flavia.

My sister's got a similar machine that takes little "pods" (kinda like overgrown restaurant creamers) rather than packets at home.

New coffee flavors is nice, but I really wish they'd added to the tea options. Still just earl gray or green tea, and I HATE the green.

Morrigoon 03-14-2008 10:37 AM

Yeah, they should. English breakfast is a must :)

Ghoulish Delight 03-14-2008 10:41 AM

It's not even about any one being a "must". Earl Gray is, actually, my favorite tea flavor. But holy hell, I've been here for almost 4 years, I can't possibly drink another cup of that earl gray, I will go in freaking sane.

We had one of those in my old building. The tea choices didn't taste that great.

I have a pod coffee maker at home. I need to buy new flavors.

Prudence 03-14-2008 11:25 AM

Yesterday my coworker H was complaining. Both of us were allowed to hire a direct report that would be about half-time general office support and half-time our devoted minions. (mine starts Monday!) However, the director kept assigning more and more tasks to H's minion until there was no room left in the job description for assisting H. But the director refused to hire her own devoted minion.

I told my coworker that I could get the director to hire a minion, thus allowing H to reclaim H's minion that she had specifically selected and did not want to share. H said that no, the director had refused and would never change her mind. I said: watch and learn.

We had our three-way meeting yesterday afternoon and, with no difficulty at all, I manipulated the conversation to include long-term staffing plans, equity with our sub-units, gosh maybe she needs some dedicated support...and presto-chango, new position to support director is authorized.

But it doesn't stop there - I also got myself promoted to a manager-level position (with raise, of course), effective immediately. This makes me the same grade as the evil boss at my old job - a fact which gives me immense satisfaction.

That's two significant promotions in six months. Can't get a legal job to save my life, but I can sure climb the ladder where I am.

BarTopDancer 03-14-2008 11:34 AM

Pru- congrats on getting a minion! And a promotion! Awesome how you manipulated the situation to get what you want. :)

Hey, I drink Earl Grey pretty much every morning at school. The girls at the coffee shop know to give me a little bit of milk in my mug.

I biked 19 miles today. Over rocks and up hills and I kicked butt. We had a huge group and it was awesome. I love my new bike. :)

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 03-15-2008 11:26 PM

There was something wrong with the world today. I saw at least 5 car accidents on the freeway today. 95% of the people were going 55 mph and under. 5% were going 85 and over which was interesting for a bit there. There was serious madness on the highway today and I don't think it was even a full moon.

???

The best was seeing a BMW in full on Tea Cup mode spining across 5 lanes of the 118 freeway. They spun better than the Cups at DL.

What F**k The?

alphabassettgrrl 03-16-2008 11:42 AM

Good job, goonie! :) I can't do much with paint and I admire those who can.

I've learned I can't drink as much as I used to. But we learned mojitos are pretty tasty and the bartender's name is Dianna. She generally works here on weekends and has a tattoo from when she got divorced. I forget the story about the tattoo except that it meant she wasn't married. And it was an excuse to look at her butt (tattoo to the left of where a "tramp stamp" would be).

We just got home from Vegas - we did the first ash scatter on Saturday at my grandparents' grave.

But, on a good note, we left early enough to do some great location scouting for our independent series, and now Ken is already researching, because we're so excited. We found some surprisingly interesting stuff. :D

LSPE, our condolences to you and your family.

DreadPirateRoberts 03-17-2008 08:31 AM

I'm sorry

blueerica 03-17-2008 08:33 AM

So, we went to Wendover, NV for a while yesterday. It's like Vegas, but not. Anyway...

Had some tummy troubles after lunch (go figure... I think the culprit was my eating the bell peppers despite knowing better with my stomach), so I didn't feel like getting in on the poker tourney. So, we sat down to the blackjack tables.

Now, I generally try to be scientific about the whole process, but in the end, I know I go on 'gut' as much as anyone else. I was at a bad table, or the mojo was bad... it was hard to tell. I couldn't settle down and made some bad calls that I knew better than to hit on. Finally, things settled down, we had a good groove going, even though I didn't move from my position, which I rarely do well at - seat 2. Did better when no one was in front of me, and yet didn't move over... didn't want to f with the groove.

Then, the creepiest mofo I've come across in years plants himself into the first position. Chills up my spine creepy, my friends. I played poorly, but honestly, I felt like the life had been sucked out of me. He left and I made it all back, and J was ahead, so we left when it looked like things were about to go downhill.

All in all, not too bad. Trip paid for itself, and we killed a day doing something we both love, playing cards.

Elphaba now has a roommate again - she's a ruby-eyed albino "feeder" mouse that we rescued from the store about a half hour ago. We've named her Nessa Rose. :)

She's really adorable, well-bodied, and energetic. She's also very affectionate and let me hold her on the way home. :D

JWBear 03-17-2008 11:28 PM

My condolences LSPE.

Posting this from the Detroit airport (DTW) - on my way to North Carolina. Haven't checked in all weekend, so this is the first I'm hearing about LSPE's grandmother. I'm sorry to hear the news - my condolences.

(more about my trip later. maybe.)

Mousey Girl 03-18-2008 06:05 AM

The Boy has a busy last few days of vacation coming up. He has been staying with his dad this week. I am picking him up Thursday after work and taking him to The Old People's house. Mom has been pitching a bitch about not being able to see him (she sees him more than once a week). She wants him to spend the night and color eggs with her on Friday.

He and I were invited to the in-laws to color eggs on Saturday. It should be fun, at least we have always enjoyed it in the past years.

Sunday, Easter, we are headed South for our Easter Basket Brunch.

Stupid question about Sunday. With it being Easter, and our "brunch" ressies not until 12:45, I am going to have to feed him at some point, on our way down. Do you all think that Denny's will be open Easter morning? I know, why Denny's? Well, the one off of Lyon's exit isn't too bad and Boy likes the Moons Over My Hammy sandwich (although he asks for bacon instead of ham).

How crowded does DLR typically get on Easter? We have never gone on Easter before.

Alex 03-18-2008 06:43 AM

Yes, Denny's will be open.

More puppy pics! I got an email today saying that she's going to mail out our AKC/UKC papers so it looks like we're OFFICIAL!

We'll know at 6 weeks which one of the girls will be ours. Here they are at 4 weeks...

We're getting a puppy! We're getting a puppy!

So the doc says that I have a full-blown sinus infection. Swell. I'm armed with antibiotics and working from home today - hopefully will be able to rest a bit and fight this monster off.

A little more unsettling - though I'm trying not to look at it that way - is the abdominal pain near my waist on the right-hand side. They tested my kidneys and they're fine; next up is an ultrasound on Friday to test my ovaries. I'm no stranger to ovarian cysts - I hope that's what this is (and nothing worse) but it doesn't necessarily feel the same. I admit that I'm a little scared, but it's much better to check it out than to ignore it and pretend it will go away.

Doooooooooooooooooooood, there was waaayyy too much confusion over cap & gown rentals than there needed to be. Oy, turns out, I can show up (quite literally, apparently) the day-of the ceremony to get my cap & gown rental taken care of. I don't know why no one told me all the other times I called and emailed, but I finally got the straight dope from the guy in charge of all that stuff.

I've decided I must purchase my ancestoral home. And it's cheap.

Not Afraid 03-18-2008 03:08 PM

One of my clients lost two of their pets. A beautiful black cat named Sheba (which I'm very sad about) and their pet scorpion (which I couldn't be happier about).
I hated spending the night in a house with a scorpion in the next room.

We sooooooo don't care which one. If you look at the pics, the male is on the right side of the middle photo. He has a fuller coat than the two girls (hence the males are usually the show dogs). The girls are pictured together in the bottom photo.

Now that we know we're definitely getting one, we can start the real countdown. Four weeks and counting! The girls were already fighting over which color collar to get. And toys...apparently you can never have enough puppy toys. :D

Thank you all for kind words :) She sends weekly updates, so I'll have more photos next week.

How can it be your ancestral home when it was built in 1950? I like how is only has 2 bedrooms but a 3 car garage. That says something.:D

Not sure where they got the 1950 thing becuase my Dad lived there long before then, with my great-grandparents right next door. It doesn't say it but there's a chicken coop too :D

12 year old girls are mean. And it doesn't help that my 12 year old is a drama queen. It's going to be a long trip through Jr. High and High School at this rate.

Mousey Girl 03-18-2008 03:27 PM

I can tell you that 11 year old(ish) boys aren't much better. You either follow or are subject to bullying. Boy is not a follower.

Disneyphile 03-18-2008 03:49 PM

I just came home with a Roomba. The one main disadvantage to hardwood flooring is the constant mess from numerous pets. So, now I have something to keep things nicer without having to break out the vacuum all the time.

Now, I just need a robot to do other things around the house.

Correction: your 12-year old girl is a 12-year old girl. No further details needed ;)

Morrigoon 03-18-2008 04:09 PM

So apparently my job description is changing again. I no longer recruit, but I am being taught how to handle the agent files because our Aliso office manager is out on disability and we won't know for how long until her appointment a week from now. When I'm not in Newport, I'm covering for her absence and catching up on the file work from the days when a regular receptionist covers the Aliso office.

Interesting.

This can be good or not so good, we'll see how things develop. I'm leaning towards "good". Especially with sales production starting to rise these days.

We have had those. I have too much carp on the floor to use them regularly. On the bright side, it didn't disturb the cat or either dog. They would sit and watch it but not be freaked out by it.

Seriously, my cat doesn't seem to mind the vacuum cleaner. Pull out a broom, on the other hand, and he's outta there. Makes me suspect some foul play with a broom - not sure why, though, considering Markus lived in a shelter for over a year.

We have laminate wood flooring. I'm hoping it lives up to its expectations or I'm taking it back.

Besides kitty litter, we also have bunny bedding, bird food, and fur tufts on the floor daily. If it picks up those things, I'll be very happy.

innerSpaceman 03-18-2008 04:53 PM

1. Are those puppies some kind of polar bear mix? I didn't know ursine and canine could mate successfully!

2. LPSE, oh sweetie, when will it stop? This may be more difficult while you're grieving ... but when it comes to your own health, please resist the natural urge to be frightened. Your attitude can work wonders, and it's easier to influence your own health before the influence of a formal diagnosis works its will on your mind. Think healthy. Be confident of health. To the extent you can.

Good luck and much love from these quarters.

alphabassettgrrl 03-18-2008 05:00 PM

When run regularly, our Roomba picked up pet hair and random floor debris with no problem. Its holding chamber is maybe a little small, but other than that it worked as it should.

Disneyphile 03-18-2008 05:47 PM

It's done charging, so I'm now testing it out in the office. So far, it picked up all three cat fur tufts, all the kitty litter in front of the box (including on the litter mat), the little bit of bunny bedding, the few bits of hay, and is now moving the vertical blinds to clean up the bird seed underneath.

With one of these, who needs a husband? ;)

I'm in love. :snap: Now, I have to tell poor Ken that I'm having an affair. ;)

I have a similar problem with "Hoover." I keep reading it as

"Free from gross passion or of mirth or anger
constant in spirit, not swerving with the blood,
garnish'd and deck'd in modest compliment,
not working with the eye without the ear,
and but in purged judgement trusting neither?
Such and so finely bolted didst thou seem."

Disneyphile 03-18-2008 06:19 PM

It did surprisingly well in the office. All of the bird food is up, even the stuff that was under the blinds.

Ode to Roomba

There was a bunch of stuff on the ground
And you picked it up nicely the first time around
With a daily mess we'll have no more
We can do other stuff while you do the chore
Your only job is that of sucking
For now you give us more time for...

I had a good audition last week. I'm up for Javert in Les Mis with a local company. I'm currently in rehearsals for "Ghosts of Treasure Island" with Oregon Children's Theatre. Pirates, fights, muskets and rockin' music! I've been approached to play Daddy in "Annie Warbucks" this summer. I don't know if I can do that and Les Mis, but I'm not holding my breath - competition is pretty fierce for Les Mis, with another round of auditions in New York later this month.

I've been on two dates in the last month. (But that's another story!)

Life is good.

That's it. I've been watching Ax Men on the history channel. So I'm going back to my original career choice. Logger. I can set chokers (we praticed for fun in the back yard), drive a skidder, sort of drive a Cat but I'm sure with pratice I'd improve.

Where can you go to work wearing suspenders? They haven't been in since Re-Run. Learn colorful phrases like "that'll pucker your butt". Use chewing tobacco on the job. Then there's the beer. None of that fancy schmancy stuff either. Plus I know that boraxo is pratcially the only thing that will get the pitch off you, that in combination with lava soap.

I've got my Women in Logging bumper stickers around here somewhere. If the rest of my family can do it, so can I. Plus you get winters off. Oh sure you don't get paid but oh well. And I can use my Dad's log proof lunchbox (an amunition box) so I'll always have my lunch even if a log breaks loose and squashes it.

Not to mention the exercise (although most of these guys look like they never get up off the couch). It's very demanding. And dangerous so that'll keep me on my toes. All my dad ever lost was the tip of a finger and that got sewed back on. As long as I don't have to be a faller because, well I am kind of wary of chain saws. They don't exactly cut through legs they kind of just mangle them.

I'm off to be a third generation logger. Wish me luck!

Long time no post! Since I fade in and out I always wonder if ya'll remember me.

I like that I can always come here after however long and somewhere there will be a thread linking Kevy and porn...or boobies...or boobie porn...

The fish porn was unexpected, but in all fairness, Kevy wasn't involved.

Really need help. MUST GO!!!

Date: 2007-11-02, 5:03PM EDT

Please help! After two long years of being on a waiting list for a dog, we have been notified by breed rescue that, at long last, our number has come up and ... WE ARE HAVING A PUPPY!

We must get rid of our children IMMEDIATELY because we just know how time consuming our new little puppy is going to be and it just wouldn't be fair to the children. Since our little puppy will be arriving on Monday we MUST place the children up for adoption this weekend!

They are described as:
One male -- his name is Tommy, Caucasian (English/Irish mix), light blonde hair, blue eyes. Four years old. Excellent disposition. He doesn't bite. Temperament tested. Does have problems with peeing directly in the toilet. Has had chicken Pox and is current on all shots. Tonsils have already been removed. Tommy eats everything, is very clean, house trained and gets along well with others. Does not run with scissors and with a little training he should be able to read soon.

One female -- her name is Lexie, Caucasian (English/Irish mix), strawberry blonde hair, green eyes quite freckled. Two years old. Can be surly at times. Non-biter, thumb sucker. Has been temperament tested but needs a little attitude adjusting occasionally. She is current on all shots, tonsils out, and is very healthy and can be affectionate. Gets along well with other
little girls and little boys but does not like to share her toys and
therefore would do best in a one child household. She is a very quick learner and is currently working on her house training. Shouldn't take long at all.

We really do LOVE our children so much and want to do what's right for them. That is why we contacted a rescue group. But we simply can no longer keep them. Also, we are afraid that they may hurt our new puppy.

I hope you understand that ours is a UNIQUE situation and we have a real emergency here! They MUST be placed into your rescue by Sunday night at the latest or we will be forced to drop them off at the orphanage or along some dark, country road. Our priority now has to be our new puppy.

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I hear you.
:)

Now, here's the lyrics in case you want to sing it correctly:

Quote:

I never wanted to do this job in the first place!
I... I wanted to be...

A LUMBERJACK!

(piano vamp)

Leaping from tree to tree! As they float down the mighty rivers of
British Columbia! With my best girl by my side!
The Larch!
The Pine!
The Giant Redwood tree!
The Sequoia!
The Little Whopping Rule Tree!
We'd sing! Sing! Sing!

Oh, I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay,
I sleep all night and I work all day.

CHORUS: He's a lumberjack, and he's okay,
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch,
I go to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin'
And have buttered scones for tea.

Mounties: He cuts down trees, he eats his lunch,
He goes to the lava-try.
On Wednesdays 'e goes shoppin'
And has buttered scones for tea.

CHORUS

I cut down trees, I skip and jump,
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women's clothing,
And hang around in bars.

Mounties: He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps,
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women's clothing
And hangs around.... In bars???????

CHORUS

I chop down trees, I wear high heels,
Suspendies and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie
Just like my dear papa.

Mounties: He cuts down trees, he wears high heels
Suspendies?? and a .... a Bra????
(spoken, raggedly) What's this? Wants to be a *girlie*? Oh, My!
And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!

CHORUS

All: He's a lumberjack, and he's okaaaaaaayyy..... (BONG)

So, I'm afraid that my chicken and rice casserole is different than the last one I made, but I'm not sure what it is. In some ways it's totally better... I'm thinking I used less cheese, in an attempt to make it healthier (among other choices I made while preparing it). So, I'm going back to cheeseville for the next round of chicken & rice casserole.

In other news, I'm fairly certain that Markus has allergies. With Spring officially here, I've been told by my local pal that the allergies can get pretty rough for those who have issues. Fortunately for me, I don't get the 'springtime' type allergies... Just the occasional mold and pollutants problem.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, and trade our eggs whenever necessary.

Alex 03-20-2008 11:52 AM

Cadbury Creme Eggs are a thing I loved as a kid. As an adult I eventually forget how disgusting they are and try one again every few years just to wonder if I need to get this fact tattooed on my forehead so I won't forget again (I almost bought one yesterday).

BarTopDancer 03-20-2008 11:55 AM

Reeses eggs are fairly gross. Not sure why, I love Reeses PB cups. But the eggs, not so much. I think it's the chocolate to "pb" ratio.

Best of luck to the happy couple. So sorry I couldn't be there.

The ratio is the problem on a lot of the special edition Reese's Peanut Butter Cups they've been making in recent years. When I was up in Alaska last August I stumbled across one that was nearly as perfect as a regular one but now I can't remember which one it was.

Morrigoon 03-20-2008 12:24 PM

Alex: try a caramel one instead :9

LSPoorEeyorick 03-20-2008 12:24 PM

You say tomato, I say tomato.

I prefer the special edition Reese's to the regular cups.

Precisely because of the pb:c ratio. I'm not that hot on chocolate.

Kevy Baby 03-20-2008 12:30 PM

When it comes to Reese's, I am very particular: They must be the Miniatures and I definitely prefer them very fresh (which have been hard to come by lately).

Here's the weird thing: I would very happily just eat the PB filling with a spoon, no chocolate in site. But if it is to be eaten with the chocolate the balance is very picky to me.

Morrigoon: I have no doubt they are better but the best plan is probably to just not eat any of them. Especially since there are usually peanut butter cups nearby.

The wedding is going to be awesome! I'm back home for a couple hours to recharge the camera batteries (and mine).

I got some great footage of them buying their wedding ears, and then we trekked over to TSI for a little while and also got trampled by a large gaggle of Japanese tourists while trying to board the Columbia.

They're having lunch at Blue Bayou right now, then having a portrait drawn and heading back to their hotel for a little R&R before tonight. :)

It's funny - people think we're filming a commercial because of my camera. ;)

Munchkin (and all rabbits for that matter) occasionally settles into a position we call the "bunny hen". Every time, I think "Bock bock bock bock" to myself and hope to find a creme egg underneath.

Oh, and a funny moment was caught on tape this morning, when I was talking to Nephy about women who wait (for sex) until they are married (keep in mind we didn't say exactly what we were referring to, since her daughter was present) -

Nephy to me: I think it's important for a woman to make sure she's getting a bratwurst instead of a Vienna Sausage, know what I mean?

Nephy's 8-year-old daughter: But, I like Vienna Sausages! They're yummy!

The poor kid couldn't figure out why we burst out laughing after she said that. :D

CoasterMatt 03-20-2008 05:18 PM

Man, I'm gonna miss out on what sounds like a great event.

I'll be home alone tonight, Rose is taking the girls to her mom's house for the night- I'll probably watch some loud obnoxious movie, or maybe even listen to the entirety of Carmina Burana at earblistering volume.

So we moved our entire television setup upstairs into the bedroom last night (minus the stereo). That's a 42" TV, TiVo, DVD player, HD cable box, Wii. With those come an HDMI cable, a composite video connection, a component connection, 1 s-video, 2 sets of RCA audio cables, 2 coax cables w/splitter, and 5 power cords. It also required completely rearranging the bedroom furniture to accommodate. And did it all in under 40 minutes.

Hmmm, allowing for obligatory pr0n in HD, won't this distract from your other bedroom activities? ;)

This is the least of our distractions. We've gone from living in a 2 story, 2 bedroom condo to living in a virtual studio apartment while they destroy our first floor and put it back together. We're managing pretty well, but getting the TV in there will make it that much more palatable.

At the tune of $8,999.00 for the XLH1 (I prefer to stick with the Canon XL series), that piece of equipment will have to wait awhile longer. For now, my XL2 gets plenty of respect (besides great footage), and was still featured as a desired pro camera at CES this year.

Anyway, I'm trying to find the number to that bus that apparently ran me over yesterday. I am SO wiped! And, I have to go meet my sister back at the park today. It's already taking everything I can to move. Ugh. I also have to hook up with two other friends who are in town there, and I also volunteered to squat a spot for fireworks for Nephy and her family. So, I really have to go.

But, it doesn't stop there. We had already volunteered to help out with a friend's 50th birthday party tomorrow afternoon out in San Bernardino, and from there, we are going to a margarita-soaked game night out in Reseda. We didn't realize they were the same day when we first said, "Sure!". But, it's not like my brain has been all that functional lately. And, now, I'm really looking forward to those margaritas to end a crazy week.

I don't think I'll get out of bed at all on Sunday. Yikes!

I really try to not get back into the habit of crazy weeks, but somehow, it just happened again. It probably wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for driving to Vegas every other weekend and trying to handle stuff there too.

Morrigoon, perhaps now's the time to tell you ... the reason we never returned your shade pavilion that we borrowed for the last beach bonfire was that is was DESTROYED by the wind.

Yes, that's right, Destroyed.By.The.Wind.

All the poles were bent by the force of the seaside gales, and they no longer fit where they're asupposed to.

We never got to even attempt to assemble my reasonably-similar (and similarly cheap) shade pavilion - - which I will bequeath to you at Swank Camp.

Morrigoon 03-21-2008 02:28 PM

Someone told me, thought it was you guys. I've known for some time that it was toast.

Don't worry about the cheap shade cover. Wasn't planning on replacing it - I'm going to hold out until I can afford an EZ-up (which, judging by my banking activities this afternoon, is going to be a long, long time from now...)

innerSpaceman 03-21-2008 03:56 PM

I'm so getting an EZ-Up for the next beach bonfire.

Well, I'll take that as a big fat NO, then.

LSPoorEeyorick 03-21-2008 09:37 PM

Only no, my dear, because I'm not feeling well.

We don't have the results back from my ultrasound yet - man, did it cause extreme pain. And no wonder... because a few hours later I go the results of the urine test from Tuesday. I was wandering around the park yesterday with a kidney infected with e coli. GRRRRRRREAT.

I'm on monster antibiotics. It isn't catching, for those of you who were near me. Suddenly all of the abdominal pain makes sense.

We're going to Sweeney tomorrow but I doubt I'll feel well enough to do anything else this weekend. Bleaaaaaaaaah.

Gemini Cricket 03-22-2008 12:38 AM

You know, it truly was a good Friday.
A very, very good Friday.

Chernabog 03-22-2008 01:31 AM

It was a great friday - freakin' double pay. :)

I'm really excited folks! I'm almost done with recording my first radio show (official) in a year. I wanted it to be premiered tonight but it just isn't going to happen I don't think. The plan is to have it premiere tomorrow night (and the show will air at other times during the week...since it is pre-recorded).

And yes...there is a swanky set dedicated to "The LoT!" ;)

oh here's a link to the station that will air the thing. More details to follow!

figment1986 03-22-2008 02:58 PM

danger: BDBopper is crazy i tell you... esp since i stole his spot on Thursdays at the station ;) (You can have Tuesday if you want...)

I'm thinking of going on... recording... then replaying it back for pst times... though i don't think their are enough listeners for that yet...

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 03-22-2008 03:29 PM

So, death seems to be the subject lately.

I am really unphased really. Apparently my cousin's wife passed away unexpectedly yesterday. I don't know the details and I have never met her before. They were married last year. From what I understand she wasn't feeling well, went to the hospital and died. I don't know the reasons. I think she was in her early 20's.

Anyway, its sad for my Uncle and his family. I am kinda un-phased by it
since I didn't know her. It's too bad, I guess.

Prudence 03-22-2008 06:57 PM

So, I need a single guy, straight, in the LA area to fix up with my law school buddy.

Oh, and she specified that he must have a penis. Didn't give too many other particulars, but the penis is apparently a non-negotiable item.

I hope so, too. And may you have a better night tonight!

Kevy Baby 03-24-2008 09:46 AM

There is a restaurant within walking distance called Riley's. It used to be a Love's and was purchased by an individual when the chain went out of business. I like it, but Susan is not fond of it. So we have a routine down where she phones in an order for a personal pizza from the Round Table in the same shopping center, I walk up to Riley's, put in my order, walk to Round Table to pick up her pizza and by the time I walk back to Riley's, my order is ready.

Except last night. When I discovered that Riley's went out of business.

Now, this may not be all that noteworthy until this morning, I decided that I was in the mood for a bagel from West Coast Bagel (an old Western Bagel location in Tustin). Much to my chagrin, I discovered that they ALSO went out of business.

I am now 0 of 2 on my last two meals. WTF?

innerSpaceman 03-24-2008 10:06 AM

I'm glad Kevy and I don't like any of the same restaurants.

(except it makes it difficult when I want him to pick up the bulk of the tab and he's not there.)

I have bacon.
I have asparagus.
I have a bbq.

I was trying to make bacon wrapped asparagus on the bbq. Didn't work out so well. Any suggestions to get the bacon cooked without completely incinerating the asparagus?

Ghoulish Delight 03-24-2008 11:06 AM

Low and slow, keep a spray bottle of water handy to keep flames down when the fat catches fire.

Ok, thank you. :) I'll try that method next. The bacon won't get crispy, right?

I ended up taking it off the bbq after about 15 minutes and finishing it in the frying pan.

Ghoulish Delight 03-24-2008 11:19 AM

If you want the bacon crispy, at the very end, when it's almost completely cooked through, turn the heat up and let things catch fire for a bit. It'll crisp the bacon and give the asparagus a bit of a char on the outside without burning things completely.

BarTopDancer 03-24-2008 11:23 AM

I am planning on getting in at 8. It's very difficult to gauge the traffic out here in Utah, since it's either awesome or sucky in the morning, though generally sucky and worse with a wreck on the freeway. I've learned of alternate routes that I will investigate, though from what I understand it can be a 'six one way half-dozen the other' kind of situation.

This morning, I realized it was a waste to stay in bed when I could snuggle up with my cat and do the whole internet thing, since it'll be a little while before I feel comfortable to do much surfing at work.

Which reminds me: work was awesome today - though I'm exhausted. I'll try and write about it tomorrow.

Puppy girl #1 has a very direct gaze, while puppy #2 looks rather wistful and just a bit sad. I go for wistful and forlorn every time. They are usually very lovable and manipulative in a very cute way. You can't go wrong with either, though- they are truly adorable.

Gemini Cricket 03-25-2008 06:14 AM

swanie - I think you should adopt all of them. :)

------------

Okay, I know this will have a huge ick factor but here goes...
I woke up this morning at about 3am with hives. I checked on WedMD and a couple of other sites and that's what it be.
At first I thought it was poison oak. But then I said to myself, I don't hike and don't plan to until the camping trip. But I did thoroughly vacuum and dust the apt, so I thought it might have been present in the rugs or something. But the hives are only in certain areas. I figure poison oak could be all over or in random areas.
I also found out that hives often occur in the upper arm and upper thigh area. And that's where I have them.
So I went to Longs and bought some Benadryl and calamine lotion. I took the Benadryl and should be unconscious in about a half hour. The calamine lotion was just to help with the itch factor. It helped a little.

Funny thing - I went to Longs on Ventura and Laurel Canyon and the three man crew that ran the place overnight were sleeping on lawn chairs in the parking lot. As soon as I pulled up, they sprang into action "cleaning" the parking lot area in front of them. Uh, yeah. I've been a manager before. Slacker fvcks. :D

Anyway, I feel gross and itchy, itchy, itchy.
Grrrr.
I guess hives just appear and disappear. I hope they go away soon.

Anyone have them before?

At first, I thought it was an allergic reaction to laundry detergent or dryer sheets, but I did laundry three days ago. I'm thinking it would have affected me right away if it was that...

Snowflake 03-25-2008 07:23 AM

Ick, feel better soon GC.

cucumber juice might help with itching and inflammation (if you've got some in the fridge) or just floating in a cool bathtub with cuke slices. Also, aloe vera (you can get it bottled) does the same as the cuke, just not as cheap.

Snowflake 03-25-2008 08:01 AM

Somethings never change and others always stay the same.
Send some LoT vibes my way, I may be moving back by moving forward to my former law firm. Job opening, they're making noise and they've got my resume. I would be back in SF proper, no commute, except on the 1 California bus and cable car.

BarTopDancer 03-25-2008 08:50 AM

So, which would be easier for someone who hate and sucks at math. Keep in mind, I barely passed Math 030 Intermediate Algebra.

Intro to Stats or Finite Math or College Algebra.

My other option is more disgusting - Trig

Ghoulish Delight 03-25-2008 08:52 AM

My initial response is algebra, but all three are very different and it really depends on what makes more sense to you. I'm generally really good at math, obviously, but I HATE "finite math", never fully grasped it. So you never know.

BarTopDancer 03-25-2008 09:15 AM

I don't even know what finite math is. I suck at Stats, I remember taking and dropping that class a few years ago.

Math sucks.

Alex 03-25-2008 09:30 AM

Based on the context of the three you listed I'm guessing "finite math" does not equal the phrase that is synonymous with "discrete mathematics" but rather the name given by many schools to generic math classes for non-science majors that covers the basics of stats, algebra, trig, calc without going into any great detail in them (I was really confused for a while when looking at maybe getting an MBA at the number of them that required finite math which I took to mean discrete mathematics which seemed way unnecessary for an MBA). From your list, personally I'd find stats the most fascinating, algebra the most day-to-day functional and the "business school math" the easiest.

Ghoulish Delight 03-25-2008 09:38 AM

Oh, okay. Yeah, I was thinking it meant Discrete Math as well (which is the branch of mathematics concerned with set theory and number theory). And, now that I've gone and looked up a formal definition of discrete math, I like it better than I thought. For some reason I was lumping it in with series and convergence which is what I struggle with.

Anyway, yeah, if that's not what was meant by Finite Math, then what Alex said.

BarTopDancer 03-25-2008 09:39 AM

Please tell me that the &quot's are a code malfunction and not some math thing.

Looks like I am stuck with Stats for the summer. Everything else is full.

/le sigh

Ghoulish Delight 03-25-2008 09:41 AM

Stats is pretty interesting stuff, and not as scary as people like to make it out to be. The math involved is really rather mechanical, just a few fairly straight forward formulas for the most part. It's all about the correct implementation of those formulas.

BarTopDancer 03-25-2008 09:46 AM

Oh goodie! My first volunteer to help! :p

It's not that I'm scared of math, it's that I suck at math. Always have. My brain doesn't process it in a way that is understandable.

I took a Stats class at OCC, was getting tutoring (by a 16 y/o) and had to drop it.

We'll see. I am taking it in the summer, so I can take it again in the fall if I need to.

More times than I can count. I used to get them chronically and take daily medication to prevent them. That hasn't been necessary for years, but I still get episodes once in a while.

Keep an eye on them. I have to take prednisone to clear up an episode of hives. The last time I didn't hit the steroid right away I ended up with one eye swelling shut and my joints starting to freeze up. Not that this would happen to you or anything, it's just a caution to not dismiss them if they start to spread or look like they're getting worse.

Otherwise, dose up on the benedryl and take a nap until it stops itching.

Not Afraid 03-25-2008 10:03 AM

I had an allergic reaction to fabric treatment on a new shirt I bought at the gap. It started out as hives in the shape of a shirt on my body which then spread all over. It took 3 days for it to go away. It was completely awful and, while benedry and calamine helped, it ended up just having it run its evil course.

Stats was the MOST evil math course I had to take - and I had to take stats 1 and 2. I thought I was going to DIE.

Ghoulish Delight 03-25-2008 10:06 AM

Uhoh, is GC allergic to being in a relationship?

katiesue 03-25-2008 10:13 AM

Oatmeal baths help too. And use fragrance free laundry stuff.

madmonkeygirl 03-25-2008 10:36 AM

Soooo....

I took Stats in college can't remember which year and i got an A in the class. I enjoyed it and had a very nice professor who would work with us give us examples and go thru each chapter making sure we all understood it before moving on. The tests were a breeze and i am not smart when it comes to math seriously wasn't until college did i get A's in my math classes. Maybe it was the teachers themselves i don't know. Good luck.

I get hives after touching holding Gina the rat. Have to leave her in her cage no more picking her up.

Gemini Cricket 03-25-2008 10:57 AM

I took two Benadryl and got knocked out.
I just got up.
There are no signs of the hives anywhere.
My skin is tingly where they were, but it totally cleared up.
It's amazing how the human body works. I thought there would be scars or something. Nada.
I feel fine now.
:)

Weird, no?

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Alex 03-25-2008 11:24 AM

Quality of teacher helps a lot for stats. Advanced statistics is incredibly math intensive but for the most part the type of stats you do in intro/seminar classes can almost be done without math. The math lets you get the exact answer but with proper guidance through the logic of statistics the approximate answers can be worked out in your head. So a teacher that gets through the logic first and follows with the math will, I find, be much more successful.

An understanding of basic statistics is an incredibly useful skill since the misapplication of statistics is probably the primary source of manipulation and misdirection used. It doesn't take a Ph.D's understanding of the field to see through a lot of misuse.

Good lord. Call the wrong person and suddenly you're dying from shingles.
I called my folks to tell them what happened and Joan Crawford freaks out.
My mom thinks the following:
-I should have gone to the emergency room.
-That I need to launder every piece of fabric in the apartment with a different kind of detergent and softener.
-I may have the shingles.
-I have hives because I wear shoes in the house...

Oy.

I have my reputation in this business to keep up and frankly I am not willing to be sucked down with this firm due to some seriously bad decisions about the cases we're taking and the way we're litigating cases. I've never actually been embarrassed to sign my name as the attorney of record on a lawsuit until this week. That's really the last straw. This job was awesome until things seriously started to slide last year, and it seems that my boss is telling me that we're going to take certain actions to correct that.. and then NO actions are actually taken.

Of course, I won't leave this job until I've found something else. I'll be a good little soldier till then. *sigh* I hate looking for a job more than anything.

madmonkeygirl 03-25-2008 12:08 PM

Soooo....

Sorry to hear of the troubles GC. Chernabog good luck in the job search.

10 more days til Bon Jovi and Anaheim. 16 more days til Vegas. :)

Motorboat Cruiser 03-25-2008 12:10 PM

Sooo, (sigh)

I just received an email that a dear friend of mine passed away. His name was Stu Nevitt and he was the drummer for a band called Shadowfax. Stu took me under his wing about 23 years ago, first as a teacher, then as a mentor, then as a musical collaborator. He was a Grammy award winner. A few years after he won, we wrote a song together for an upcoming album called "Esperanto" and that album was nominated for a Grammy as well.

Throughout the years, we played in bands together, wrote music, and enjoyed each others company. He was a gifted musician and a dear friend and I'm going to miss him terribly.

I'm still in shock.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss MBC. I saw Shadowfax in concert once many years ago (they opened for Spyro Gyra at the Greek) and fell in love with them.

What was the cause of death?

Disneyphile 03-25-2008 12:34 PM

*grabs the Grim Reaper's nuts and twists*

*sigh*

MBC, my thoughts are with you. :(

LSPoorEeyorick 03-25-2008 12:37 PM

God, MBC, I'm so, so sorry. I know how much he meant to you. My thoughts are with you and yours today.

No details as of yet. I'm under the impression that this may have happened in the last day or two. No info whatsoever online.

BTD, FWIW, I've always had an easier time getting through my maths in summer courses. I have similar troubles with math (took me 2 tries per semester to get through Algebra I in jr. high/high school, 3 tries to pass Algebra II in high school/college), but every time I made it through with a passing grade was in a summer course. Incidentally, I eventually got smart - took college algebra as a summer course and passed on the first try, but not without much personal wrangling and a few talks with the instructor to explain what kind of help I was looking for when I raised my hand during his lectures.

My biggest problem with math classes is that I don't "speak" math, and math professors, of course, do. They assume you know/remember/can apply things that I can't necessarily, and since we don't "speak" the same language, they have a very hard time understanding what I'm asking so they often just repeat themselves without offering any new info. What helped me was to speak with the prof early on in the course, and let him know that my problem was often that of communication, and that I have to write down absolutely every step (including those they skip because they think we can make the logical leap on our own), and that if I ask a question, I'll be very direct about the info I need, and if he can use different words to answer my question, then often that will do it. Oh, I remember... I explained to him that while he speaks "math", I speak "verbal"... and so what I had to do in note taking was to translate everything he was saying in his "math" language, into my "verbal" language, and write that in my notes to be re-read and actually processed later.

If that sounds familiar, BTD, I'd try that.

If not, find out when their office hours are, and be there every week. I think that's how I passed financial markets (which sounds cool but ended up being the highly mathematical process of options pricing - eek!). I'm almost positive it was a pity C ;)

BarTopDancer 03-25-2008 01:18 PM

Oy vey. MBC, I am so sorry :(

----

C - it's an online class. All my classes are. I won't be shy about emailing or calling the teacher though. I just hope the math program they use is a good one. Failing is not an option. I do not want to have to take 5 classes in the fall.

Hugs to you MBC. I'm sad and sorry for your loss. I'm with DP in the Grim Reaper who seems to have taken a shine to my friends on LoT lately.

The happy thing is you have good music, great memories and I will bet you, inspiration a plenty too.

:( {HUGS}

Motorboat Cruiser 03-25-2008 02:21 PM

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I appreciate it.

wendybeth 03-25-2008 02:28 PM

Big hugs, MBC. I lost a friend earlier this month, and just met with his wife today. She's pretty devastated, and I don't know if she'll ever be the same again. Put me in line with the Grim Reaper nadtwisters.

BarTopDancer 03-25-2008 02:33 PM

Can't we just kill the grim reaper? There has been more than enough death and sadness to last this group quite awhile.

blueerica 03-25-2008 03:13 PM

My sympathies, MBC.

Boy, has it ever been rough on our little patch of friends. *sigh*

Not Afraid 03-25-2008 03:28 PM

Execute the Grim Reaper!

I'm sorry, MBC. It's always tought to lose a good friend and mentor.

In completely unrelated news.....3 more day until I have a day off. My last full day off was February 18th. I have hell Wednesday to get through as well as 4 nights away from home, but Saturday I will be free. Of course, I have a weekend date with my garage, so a different type of "work" will be involved.

No. ;) (If I had a cloan, I'd gladly send her.)What I really want to do is play in the backyard. I went to the nursery today and I have some planting to do. I also am lusting after some patio furniture. I've got the Spring Redecorating bug.

Disneyphile 03-25-2008 04:02 PM

Well, thanks to a friend's gift, a star has now been named after my mom.

She can be found in the Ursa Major constellation at 10h 21m 53.89s 53 10' 9.06"

:)

Yikes, but how much oatmeal do you need to fill up a bathtub - and that stuff's gotta clog the drain.

It was either here or the D&D thread.

That paints a vivid image... LOL!

Actually, you just add a cup or two of regular oatmeal (not the instant kind!) to the bath water.

I guess I've been doing it all wrong.

Tori just did this watercolor of a panda- I think it's cute:

Gemini Cricket 03-26-2008 12:13 AM

Yay, Tori.
A+ top-notch picture.
:)

blueerica 03-26-2008 05:22 AM

I love it! Let me know if she wants to part with anything, I'd be glad to pay for it and shipping... she's really good, and I'd love to say I had something she did when she was 12. ;) Plus, I get to say "It's the daughter of a friend of mine..." while people gush. Think about it. It's pretty cool.

She just really seems to 'get it.'

:D

Strangler Lewis 03-26-2008 06:02 AM

Great panda. American Girl magazine publishes a few pictures by girls in every issue. Of course, they decline to publish many more. Still, twelve isn't too young to experience the first taste of bitter, soul-killing rejection.

Perhaps just carry on as you are.

BDBopper 03-26-2008 08:14 AM

Okay. Catching up here:

BC - My sincere condolences to you on the loss of your friend. May his memory live forever!

DP - Wow! What a thoughtful friend you have naming a star for your mom!

GC - Glad the hives have gone away. Don't get them again okay?

Holy cow...that was an awesome panda painting!

BTD - Best of luck with Stat. When I was in college I loved it. Got an A. Only course of math I ever got an A in. Of course maybe it was just plain dumb luck.

Snowflake - Best of luck with getting back to the old law firm if you so choose to do so.

Cherny - Good luck with the job hunt after the cruise. I have faith that you will find something that is rewarding for you. Chin up my friend! :)

I think that about covers it!

Strangler Lewis 03-26-2008 08:30 AM

Yes, more pandas. Less death, discomfort and career instability.

Chernabog 03-26-2008 08:38 AM

http://www.boingboing.net/2008/03/25...e-on-kitt.html

^^ Yes, I know some on here will like cute kitties with messages on their fur :)

And thanks guys for the encouragement on the job stuff -- I am not going to switch until after the cruise for sure (that whole, thanks for hiring me, now I need all of next month off thing isn't going to work well). But my current boss simply has let things slide to a point where it's hurting me professionally as much as it's helping my bank account. Going to the office has become an endless episode of "Whose Crisis Is It Anyway?". It's a great flexible attorney job (rare in that business) but.... if all the elements are great except the actual JOB itself... it's time to move on.

Motorboat Cruiser 03-26-2008 08:41 AM

That's one awesome panda, Tori. ! :)

Snowflake 03-26-2008 09:23 AM

Okay, WB, that tears it! I'm lining up for a Tori original!

CoasterMatt 03-26-2008 09:28 AM

Lol- very funny, Strangler! (Tori thought so too). I wonder how you came to know of their operation.....?;) (They got us for twelve dolls and a b-day party before the Girl found other interests).

Thanks, everyone! Her art teacher came out of their class while the kids were working yesterday just to tell me how good she was, which made me pretty proud.:)

Here's a picture to help the good vibes along. Or at least the sexy good vibes...

Kevy Baby 03-26-2008 03:28 PM

I just passed the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile at lunch. It was going northbound on Bristol at Sunflower.

Gemini Cricket 03-26-2008 03:35 PM

Culture Club. Weinermobile... Kevy, your gay is showing.

:D

alphabassettgrrl 03-26-2008 04:40 PM

I'm glad to know the Wienermobile is still around. It was years ago that I saw it in Santa Monica.

Disneyphile 03-26-2008 04:57 PM

I wonder if they've ever made a Wienermobile vibrator...

Disneyphile 03-26-2008 04:59 PM

By the way, if anyone's interested, today on Woot.com, they are offering a Roomba for $149 + $5 shipping.
