If Jesus wasn't all about social justice, then why are many many Christians publicly disagreeing with Beck?

Quote:

In attacking churches that espouse social justice, Mr. Beck is taking on most mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic, black and Hispanic congregations in the country — not to mention plenty of evangelical churches and even his own, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I had that reaction, too. I don't agree that social justice is about forcing the rich to pay for the poor, but to work towards actual equality for all people.

No, don't you understand? Nobody is allowed to attempt to persuade someone to do anything they wouldn't naturally want to do without any persuasion. If you feel naturally inclined towards helping the poor, then, by all means. But don't you dare try to turn me into a commie socialist. FREE WILL, MUTHAFVCKAS!!!!!

The problem is that many conservatives do not want everyone to have equal rights. They seem to feel that if you create a system where minorities and the poor have an equal opportunity to succeed, then you are somehow taking success away from those the "deserve" it (ie: white Anglo-Saxon males). They see success as being zero-sum.

I think this talk about free will and lack of compulsion is off the mark. Yes, as I read my Jesus, charity should, indeed, be heartfelt and, also, non-ostentatious. However, the NT is all about laying out what God expects/demands from people. Nowhere does it say that the man who forthrightly grindeth the poor under his heel has a special place in heaven because of his honesty.

I think this is a problem in a lot of interactions.

"We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other's happiness - not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there's room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.
The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men's souls - has barricaded the world with hate - has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost."

I only wish more of my tax money went social programs. I would rather feed the poor than the war machine.

Is it more important to see that those who deserve help get it or to prevent helping those who do not deserve it?

alphabassettgrrl 03-15-2010 12:41 AM

To help the deserving.
