There are two primary kinds of drivers in Seattle: those who panic at the mere thought of snow and slow to an incomprehensible crawl (usually going uphill), and those who have shiny new all-wheel drive vehicles and speed around without considering that increased ability to "go" does not equal increased ability to "stop." Add those two together, slap them onto the freeways, and you have the reason most of us just stay home, even when it's just a dusting. My husband's family is from Ellensburg (east side of the state, for those not familiar, and might as well be a different country) and when we were courting he used to come over the pass in the snow. You can tell the west-siders from the east-siders. So there he is, chugging along at a steady, but measured pace, not so fast as to be out of control, but not so slow as to lose traction, and this SUV goes whizzing around him, honking and sharing their most favorite hand gestures. Fast forward several miles and there, off to the side of the road, is the very same SUV, front end crumpled against a snow bank. He honked and waved.
