Just a littel update on the post Christmas tree fire clean-up:
The replacement of the carpet is well underway. From my vantage in the Acorns Gifts and Goods shop, the sound of nail guns was quite audible. Almost sounded like a shooting gallery for awhile!;) The original carpet was scheduled for replacement sometime in 2006, so this one is just a quick fix. Scafolding is up to repair the ceiling beams. Chances are that they will also check the fire sprinkler system in the lobby if it needs to be done. The lobby light stands (the stain glass ones that stand at the corners of the seating area of the lobby) are back in place. They were bringing them in by furniture moving dollies as I was leaving the shop today. They looked in good shape. From what I've heard from my leads, they are attempting to have the lobby back in shape by New Years Day. Work is going on nearly round the clock to meet that completion goal.:snap: |

LibraryVixen and I were in the park that day, and went though the AP lounge on our way to breakfast at 7:50.
I pondered the lack of a tree, but all we saw was the yellow tape lines, and shop vacs. We left Storytellers and went back to enter the park through the main gate... only now, the AP lounge had a cherry picker in the middle of it. I shrugged it off. Two hours later she had a missed call asking her if she was staying in the Disneyland hotel, it was evace'd. We shrugged it off. Made a call sometime later, the facts were still a tad off... Later, we met a nice stranger in the HM fastpass line who spilled the beans...he was a fireman himself on vacation and staying, (and Evaced) in the Grand Cal. well dag nab it!!! We were in that lobby twice!!! Had we known what we were looking at, we might have have paid more attention!!! From what I saw? Speedy clean up... I'm sorry I missed the tree. |
The Grand Californian lobby lounge is open again! They did it! Aside from the temporary carpet (same carpet that is used in the rooms)and the make-shift perimeter of ferns around some of the areas between the lobby and the walkway to the north side of the lobby, it looks the same as before. I didn't notice if the piano was back in place, but I didn't look for it. Pretty quick work. :snap:

There is one cabinet that I have always loved. It was on the west end of the lobby, the one on the left if you were looking from the center of the lobby. It was made of quilted maple and walnut. I have always been meaning to go in to carefully photograph and measure so I could make one myself. I hope it is still around, or at least is returned restored some day.
That cabinet was actually the first thing I thought about when I heard about the fire. |
