Not necessarily. Movies set in France where people speak English with American accents would be totally wrong. Everyone knows the proper way to represent the French language in film is with English spoken with British accents. Sheesh. :p

As for your second point ... you are, of course, entitled to that opinion, but I've rarely heard purer hogwash.

I just finished watching The Orphanage, for instance, and there was nothing discernably Spanish about the tone, or pacing, or subject matter, or any quality of the film other than that it took place in Spain.

I happened to have enjoyed hearing it in Spanish because it lent authenticity to story taking place in Spain. And of course, the actors' facial expressions and performances matched the dialogue far better than dubbing could facsimilate.

But the same is not true of animated films. Especially not the Ghibli ones which, imo at least, have mouth movements that don't match any language precisely.

But tell you what, if you will read the subtitles out loud for me ... so I can watch the movie ... I'll reconsider my vote.

:D

Just a quick reminder that we're starting the movie at 7pm - and if you need directions, please shoot me a PM.

Gemini Cricket 01-05-2008 04:57 PM

I'd like to go, if there's room.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-05-2008 05:39 PM

There's more room now - we aren't going to make it. Have fun guys!

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 01-05-2008 05:50 PM

I would go but my cough is back. Would like to at another time for sure. :)

OK. Let me be the first to post the sad truth that the movie was not so good. While a few of us liked bits and pieces of it, we all agreed that for the most part it was a mess. The animation was pretty and at times beautiful, as evidenced by the trailer, and the music had its moments, but from a narrative perspective - blah. To say that there were plot holes would be an understatement. To paraphrase Heather, it was as if they took a long book and randomly selected a few pages from several chapters and animated them, without any explanation of how they were linked. I sure wish there had been a Le Guin fan among the group last night to explain what the heck was going on.

On the other hand - I was delighted (as always) by the folks who turned up. Other than the film itself, it was a fun night filled with great conversation, interesting sodas and lots of "coming attractions." Expect another mousepod movie night in a couple of weeks.

I didn't care for the movie. But there was some amazing animation here and there in this flick. The backgrounds and reflections were standouts.

Last night was great fun. It was my first time at casa de mousepod y Heather. Also, meeting the doggies was nice... even though Jack didn't care for my dancing.
:D

Thanks for the wonderful evening.
:)

Well it just goes to show that even a crappy movie will make for a fun night at casa de mousepod. Imagine what a good movie might inspire!!

Um, but yeah, Tales of Earthsea sucked. I wasn't even particularly impressed with the animation or visuals. It was just a complete and utterly boring mess, with nary an interesting thing happening between the opening hook and the final cliched hero battle, and characters who were just as boring and unlikeable as the "story" - which I have to put in quotes.

I assume there are some worthy tales among the tales of Earthsea. This wasn't one of them.

So, I likely hated the film the most ... and it did not dim my enjoyment of the evening in the slightest. Such Fun!

Did you end up watching subtitles or dub (just curious, not suggesting it would change appreciation for the movie)?
