No, the idiot forgot to lock it last night. He wouldn't have even looked for the remote (he uses the keypad next to the door), but he said the inside of the car smelled like cigarettes. Nothing else was missing from his car, just the remote.

He talked to Carl (next door neighbor) who said he thought he had heard PoohDog barking around 2:30. I don't remember hearing him, but I bet that is what woke me up. David had asked me if I had gone outside for a cigarette when I got up. I didn't rememeber doing that at the time, but I did. Because of the black widow infestation in the patio I turn on all of the lights back there when I smoke. That is probably what spooked the guys off. Imagine being up to no good and all of a sudden there are lights everywhere.

Kevy Baby 10-12-2005 09:02 PM

Soooo....

I've been MIA for a couple of weeks (about 1,380 posts worth). After my computer being on (with occassional restarts for SW updates) for about a year and a half straight, I decided to shut it down when we went away for a long weekend. When we got back, it wouldn't turn on.

After much futzing, I got it to start up... sort of. I don't remember the specifics, but it wasn't good (that much I remember).

Finally got it down to a problematic hard drive or corrupted directory. After running three different disk recovery programs, one of which ran about a half dozen times, taking about 36 hours to "rebuild" the directory each time, I gave up. Installed a new HD. Somehow, I f-ed up the power switch during the drive swap (not the power SUPPLY; the stinkin' switch!).

So, after a $90 visit to the computer doctor, I got my computer back on Monday. I put the old hard drive in an external case and have been extracting all my files from it. So far, I have beeen able to restore all my email messages and bookmarks. I've re-installed most of my programs. I just need to find all my MP3s and the Disneyphile/Frodo Potter engagement video (seems I spelled her name wrong - duh!).

So this evening, after the frustrating end to the Angels game this evening, I didn't have the patience for any more forensics this evening. Soooo....

I'm back.

Sorry!

Prudence 10-14-2005 05:24 PM

So -- second Friday in a row I have rearranged my schedule to be home for furnace maintenance. Second week in a row I get stood up. Last week, they called me 15 minutes before my appointment to say they were too busy to keep that appointment, then hung up on me. So I called a second guy. Appointment today for 4. Hubby calls at 4:30 to see what's up. Second furnace guy forgot. And not only is he not willing to come right out, he's not willing to do it evenings or weekends and waive his surcharge. Even though it's his mistake. So in two weeks we go with furnace company #3...

Mousey Girl 10-15-2005 03:52 PM

Well...today we moved Dawn into her new house. Last night David was over there moving some stuff for her and she kicked him out, saying that she was having a "girls only" party. Today he found out that it was not girls only. The guy that was trying to score with either her or her step daughter, a guy that was forbidden to be around their house, a guy that Dawn was seen out in public with, a guy that we all think she had an affair with, who hates her kids, was also at the party. She had told me that they had talked last night, but on the phone. She never told me that he had come over. David found out that he was there last night and he got so upset that he came up to me and said that we are leaving NOW.

She is out of control. She has bills 1-3 months past due, but she went out and bought all new livingroom furniture, a new computer desk and a new dining room set. I am now sorry that I had given her money. For the first time in her life she has freedom but does not know how to handle it. At least I know why she hasn't been calling me for the last week; I would have called her out on her behavior.

I feel bad, but I can no longer be involved with her. My marriage means more to me than that.

Here's to staying strong for you and YOUR family during this tough time.

Prudence 10-19-2005 12:20 PM

Sooo...

I've been freaking out because I'm nearing the 3 year anniversary of my car accident, which also means I'm nearing the glorious, yet terrifying statute of limitations. Yes, the accident was my fault and I pushed a car into another car. (I was applying the brake quite forcefully (due to another accident up ahead that had just happened and we were all slamming on our brakes), but apparently I'd already locked the brakes and the car refused to stop.) But everything that could go wrong after that did.

I broke my arm in the worst possible way (used it as an air bag) and it took forever to heal. (Although I did regain full motion, and I wasn't supposed to.) I went to traffic court and the judge was an old college buddy of the front car's driver. The front guy's insurance company reported me to the state as an uninsured driver AFTER my insurance company had already settled with them. The state sent the notice to some ancient address of mine (why do I bother with change of address forms? And yes I sent the special DoL form, too) and so I didn't have notice my license was *suspended* until I went to renew it and learned I'd been driving on a suspended license for 6 months. Getting the suspension revoked took forever because the first person at the DoL said I had to get the other driver's insurance company's permission to lift the suspension, and the insurance company swore at me, called me every name in the book, and hung up on me. (Turns out I just needed to fax over proof that I was insured at the time, plus a copy of the police report showing that I did provide my info at the time.)

Meanwhile, the middle driver *was* uninsured. And decided to sue me. For lots and lots of money. I had a pretty damn big policy, but she wanted more. And apparently she tried to claim everything that had every happened to her. Her first attorney refused to continue with the case. Then nothing for awhile from the second attorney. Finally I had Ryan call my insurance company (I was too freaked out) and not only has this woman been in a really really bad accident since the one I caused, but she's now dead. Deceased. Not-my-fault deceased.

And it's really really morbid, but I'm so relieved I can't even describe it. I mean, it was my fault (in the I caused it, not in the I deliberately was a bonehead sense) and that's why I had a big policy -- to financially protect myself should such a thing happen. And of course she (now her estate) should be compensated for her injuries. But she had for some reason decided she wanted to take me down and it's just been a near constant source of stress for me. I won't even drive any more unless I absolutely have to. I can barely tolerate riding in cars. But she's dead. And the estate could still sue me, but without a live client it's not so likely.

Prudence 10-20-2005 06:02 PM

On a much lighter note --

In some moods I free associate songs. Ryan says I'm basically a live sampler. So, last night I was going through different musical genres and stopped briefly on the Immigrant Song. Like most people, I have no idea what the words are, so I mostly just do the howl-y bit. And every time I did that, Boris would howl back -- in tune! That kitty does a mean Robert Plant. It was pretty funny.

Kevy Baby 10-20-2005 08:09 PM

The Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods
Will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying:
Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green,
Can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war.
We are your overlords.
On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
So now you’d better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day
Despite of all your losing.

Prudence 10-20-2005 09:47 PM

Or, if you're Boris, "Mrrrrooooow, ow!"

Prudence 10-21-2005 09:05 AM

When are you leaving? You may want to call and get an appointment at a passport agency ASAP. The closest one is LA, and it serves people traveling within 2 weeks. (The site says within two weeks, so if you do need to get it changed, you won't be the first people to need that and the agency is prepared to help you.)

You have to make an appointment and the number is 1-877-487-2778 (automated appointment number).

You will have to pay extra fees for expediting service, but not for the appointment.

Get an appointment if only for the peace of mind.

We leave TOMORROW! CP has the afternoon off. She'll be figuring out wtf we need to do.

Prudence 10-21-2005 09:39 AM

Eeeep! Well, hopefully it will be okay. Collect all the identifying documents you can get your hands on and we'll all hope for the best.

Ghoulish Delight 10-21-2005 01:04 PM

Hmm, so that's stress. Me no likey stress.

Well, after a morning of calls and running around on CP's part, we think we've got some peace of mind. Too late to get an appointment downtown for the Passport center. Airline's not allowed to change the name on a ticket once it's issued. Person answering phones for the passport department knows that they'll accept a marriage license in this situation for Canada/Mexico, but isn't so sure about France.

We were able to find CP's OLD ss card, but not her new one. So she was able to go in and get a printed, certified document with her new name and her number.

But the real good news was that after being given the run around by the French Embassy ("This is the DC office, call your local office." "We're the local office, call the DC office." "This is the DC office, we won't talk to you." "No one's here at the local office until 2pm."), CP FINALLY got through to someone who said they were 100% sure that the passport + marriage licesne would work. I can live with that. I still won't be comfortable until we're on the plane. Check that, until we successfully clear out of CDG airport. But I'm feeling better.

Mr. Zapppop had a good idea. The first people that we'll have to convince of this are the airline people. They'll probably be the easiest. Hopefully, once they agree that she is indeed who she is, they will print her boarding passes for both flights with her maiden name. Then, from there on out, everything matches, no explaining to do. That'd be far easier than trying to expalin the situation to someone in Paris that may or may not speak English very well.

Ugh.

BarTopDancer 10-21-2005 01:33 PM

OY VEY GD!

Mr. Zapp had a great idea. :D I hope it works!

Prudence 10-21-2005 01:55 PM

I tend to go for offbeat color combinations, so I'd say nearly anything goes with Chocolate brown. I mix browns like they're black. A really nice look, if you're not going anywhere too messy, would be cream colored shoes.

But I'm a fan of anything that is either a little bright, or light in color. You probably wouldn't want to have any dark color that isn't black, and blacks with browns don't look so good unless there's something to lighten it up, like a cream or a white, or again bright color, IMO.

I'd really love to find a great pair of brown pants.

Not Afraid 10-22-2005 02:30 PM

You know, I've had a thing for brown and black together lately. Black pants, brown sweater and brown shoes. Brown skirt, black sweater, brown and black herringbone stockings, black shoes.

I love it - and it makes my life so much easier.

Mousey Girl 10-23-2005 05:59 AM

Yesterday was very productive in the Mousey house. David "borrowed" our neighbor's spare remote for the garage door, and all is working and reprogramed. He is no longer allowed to have a remote in his car (since he has issues keeping his car locked). He also managed to mow the front yard and seed it with winter rye. I managed to do a half-assed clean up of the living room to keep him happy and to keep Nickolas from having any of his Yu-Gi-Oh cards tossed.

Nickolas left to go to a friend's house only to show back up 10 minutes later to ask if he could go to the hockey game. After making sure that he WAS invited and didn't just invite himself I told him he could go. He went back over there a happy camper. Then he came back 15 minutes later to tell me he was asked to spend the night (these are the same friends he spent the weekend with after Jimmy's incident). Of course I told him he could go. At 5 my house was invaded by little boys trying to decide what Game Cube games needed to accompany him. I got him changed into warmer clothes, gave him a pillow and he was off.

David and I went to a BBQ at Dawn's new house. She and David made peace (bad scene last weekend) so things are much better in that area. We got home and enjoyed some "us" time. He went night night and I have been awake ever since. I think I ate too much and my tummy isn not used to red meat. I mostly cook chicken around here and we had tri-tip for dinner.

Hoepfully I will be able to get some sleep today. hehehe One of the things on David's self made list is to clean the kitchen. If I go back to bed it should be clean by the time I wake up (if I time it right).

Mousey Girl 10-28-2005 02:46 PM

So...I have completed my Christmas shopping for my neices. Tuesday I will take my mom to Target so she can complete her shopping for the girls and Nickolas-she has everyone else taken care of already. Friday a friend is going with me to Santa Clarita to the Disney store so that I can get Nick's Santa present, 3 Premium AP's for next year. I didn't want to order them online so I went on a search for the closet Disney store. Santa Clarita is an hour closer than Fresno-which for some odd reason surprised me.

I already took care of his main Christmas present from us (Mario Party 7 for GC) and his b-day present (Pokemon game for GC). Now all I need to get him is some small stuff and he will be done. I have been getting him stocking stuffers since August.

I think I am going to get David a Robopet or Roboraptor for Christmas. Last year I got him the Robosapien.

My parents are pretty easy. They get pissy if we do too much so they will end up with some edible goodies.

I have to wait to shop for the inlaws until after Thanksgiving, when we get their lists.

Now the challenge is going to be NOT getting my neices anything else.

Kevy Baby 10-28-2005 05:07 PM

So the third time's the charm, and this time the furnace guy actually showed up. (Third company - I didn't give the first or second one's another shot at lousy service.) A personable fellow who talked my ear off for 90 minutes. Wasn't a bad was to spend an afternoon. He kept bringing up current events being discussed on the LoT, which gave me a weird sense of deja vu. (Is it still deja vu when one conversation is face to face and the other is virtual?) I think scaeagles has a doppelganger working up here doing heating and air conditioning.

Sort of, but not with this. Once it really hit home that I would be out of a job by Christmas-one way or another, I started looking for sales and small stuff to get Nickolas. Then I started planning things out and budgeting. Then my mom got a burr up her butt about wanting to get everything done RIGHT NOW, so it got me started. Since I do most of her shopping and plotting for her I picked stuff up for me as well. I usually do this for her every year, but with her eyesight declining and the kids needs getting more and more technical it is just easier this way. The main difference is that since we owe The Old People $5400 for our a/c unit, I am not taking any money from her and just writing it off of what I owe. They refuse to take any cash from us, so this is also my way of paying them back.

Prudence 11-13-2005 08:30 PM

So, today my boss (dept. administrator) calls me at 8am to warn me that there's email waiting for me telling me that the department chairperson (as in, the person I'm "assistant to" is in the hospital and critically ill. So now we wait to see what the next 48 hours brings.

Not too bad. We had some snow yesterday at 2am when I woke up and peeked out the window, but it turned to rain by the time I got up. Then, as we were leaving, it turned back to snow. It was too damp for accumulation, though.

But the real reason it didn't snow is because I created a detailed snow plan to handle the faculty interview in case I couldn't make it in. The next scheduled potential snowfall is at the end of the week. I don't work Friday, so I've made no in-case-of-snow plans. Therefore, I'd say Friday looks real likely for west-side snow.

Brigitte 11-30-2005 10:25 AM

Wendy, do you get very many snow days over there? I can only remember one in the last 5 years here and it was for icy conditions up in the hills, not snow. I half hoped for one today with all the snow, but at the same time I didn't need the extra kids around :)

blueerica 11-30-2005 10:40 AM

They never called, Lisa? Hmm, seemed like they contacted the rest of the planet - Oh well :) They may have discriminated, because I listed you as a "co-conspirator"... LOL, BTD, guess you must have said the right thing. I know they also called my last place of employment and they gave a good reference.

I'm liking it so far. YAY!

wendybeth 11-30-2005 10:42 AM

I'm not sure, Brigitte- we homeschool, so I don't pay any attention to that. However, when Tori did go to public school, I don't remember any snow days, even though we had lots of snow at times. Today, the news said busses were running late, but schools were open.

Brigitte 11-30-2005 11:10 AM

Ours weren't even running late today, all on time. I dread the afternoon commute though by looking at the snow falling right now :(

Soooo....

The con law final sucked so hard I don't even have words to describe it. Yea, verily, it sucketh. Suckethed? Ish.

One more left - damn admin take-home final. I want to finish it Thursday evening so I can drop it off Friday morning and celebrate my birthday with a nap.

€uroMeinke 01-02-2006 08:23 AM

Sooo.......

We have a New Years Eve party that came to an end aroud 9:00 PM yesterday and I climb into bed at 11:00 delighting in the fact that I can sleep in as Today is a holiday for me....

And I get up at 5:00 AM! Despite my best efforts to go back to sleep, I'm out of bed by 6:00, sipping coffee wodering if this afternoon I'll be taking a nap.

No doubt, I will have a hard time getting up for work tommorrow.

We woke up around 11:30 this morning. Thankfully the cats let us sleep.

Cadaverous Pallor 01-02-2006 03:45 PM

Woo hoo, 12 hours of sleep! :D :D :D Slept until 11pm so sleep tonight may be tough, but I don't care.

It absolutely poured today as we watched the Rose Parade on DVR. I think I'll go make some tea.

I can't believe I go back to my normal work schedule tomorrow. Ah well, today is a nice relaxing wind-down.

See what happens when you LoT at work?

Ghoulish Delight 01-05-2006 01:31 PM

Soooo...

After a morning of actually working and going to meetings, I get to my cubical at about 11 and see my voicemail light blinking at me. The office at our apartment complex had called at 9 saying they needed permission to enter our apartment. That can't be good. I call back and it turns out our downstairs neighbors are getting a water leak and they think it might be coming from our apartment. So of course I give them permission to go in. I also snuck out at 11:30 for an early lunch so I could get home and take a look for myself.

Well, by the time I get there (now nearly 3 hours after the office originally called me), it seems as if no one's come by. They always lock the deadbolt and leave a note when they do, neither had been done and nothing in the apartment looked touched. Meanwhile, the good news is that there were no visible signs of problems in our apartment. I was afraid I'd come home to find that the shower faucet had burst and flooded a whole room or something.

Of course, that probably means there's a busted pipe in the wall or something and it's going to require them to tear into the walls and drive us nuts for weeks on end. But thank God none of my stuff is wet!

Kevy Baby 01-07-2006 12:22 AM

After over a year the Mousey house gets to head back to the southland for DLR fun next weekend!!! I tried so hard to go this weekend, but it was not meant to be... I am thrilled to have our APs back and can't wait to break them in.

Oh, on a side note, I get to go to Employer's Training Resource on Wednesday and then to a job search thingy on Thursday. bleh. But maybe this will help me gert out of the doghouse I have been in since I quit.

I played the song "Only" by Nine Inch Nails really loud - and found out that the neighbors autistic nephew responds REALLY well to it. He's putting his hands on the subwoofer, and has a look on his face that is priceless. I think he's gonna be over here quite a bit, if music is a spark for him.

Stan4dSteph 01-13-2006 11:06 PM

Okay, I'm going crazy trying to figure out the name of a song. I'm hoping someone will understand my ramblings and be able to tell me what song it is.

It's a trip-hop kind of song with a sort of chorus with a woman singing "love ya" over and over in one part. I think it's been used in an episode of CSI, but I'm not sure.

Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about?

Not Afraid 01-13-2006 11:11 PM

No.

And why are you still awake?

Kevy Baby 01-15-2006 05:52 PM

Sooo...

Yesterday, we learned something new about our Beardies. They have two penises!

Well, the males have do; not the females.

Two penises.

How very bizarre.

We found out because we reported something to our rep specialist. The male (Draco) that mated with and impregnated the female (Scarlett) that laid 26 eggs last month, attempted to mate again when we put them back together (again was successful as we are waiting for her to lay another clutch of eggs as I write this). After one attempted mating, to which I was unfortunately a witness to - something I didn't to see, I noticed a little blood on Scarlett's hind quarters and tail. Upon looking further, I noticed some blood around Draco's groin, except in higher concentrations. I was able to determine that it was coming from him, especially since he was walking gingerly and keeping pressure off that area.

He ended up okay (which we ascertained by the check-up). But he has two hangy-down thingies! A living double-dildo.

Not Afraid 01-15-2006 06:32 PM

Is there a reason for this? We need a Nature's Wonderland episode here.

€uroMeinke 01-15-2006 06:45 PM

More importantly - are the two penises different in anyway? I imagine the benefit of having two wanes if they're identical - unless of course, one is prone to loosing them.

Or, they could be of two different ComfortSizes (tm) to fit whichever lady comes along. "Never worry about being under- or oversized again!"

MickeyLumbo 01-15-2006 07:01 PM

TWO peni!?!

Draco is one damned lucky dude.

if i had two i'd be as happy as a puppy with two peckers...but, then i'd probably never get any housework done.

(is he gonna be ok? blood is not supposed to happen, right? or does he get kinky when he gets his freak on?)

It certainly would make threesomes interesting...

One thing I did find was:
Quote:

If the bumps you are talking about are two bumps, one on each side on the underside of the tail, just past the cloaca then you are asking about hemipenile bulges. Beardies have two copulatory organs, and each is called the hemipenis (plural: hemipenes).
Other than that, I have no idea why two. I guess there are several other reps (including some/many snakes) with hemipenes.

He is fine. We checked him out (you have to gently force them out one at a time) and all looks okay. More of Draco than I actually wanted to see, but we did need to make sure.

He is looked depressed right now - Scarlett (his girlfriend who is off to lay eggs) has been away for a couple of days now.

We talked to our rep guy who has Scarlett. She dug a hole this morning and crawled down into it, but didn't lay any eggs. Probably by tomorrow.

How weird. We missed Serenity in the theaters and bought it the first day it came out. We decided that the best way to watch it was after a week-long reviewing of the entire series. Ghoulish Delight 01-24-2006 05:55 PM

So, I did my good deed for the day. I stopped at the bank at lunch. On my way in from my car, a young blind gentlemen in front stopped me and asked if I saw a cab waiting around anywhere. I did not, and told him as much.

I went in, handled my banking needs for the afternoon, and came back out to see the blind (and likely frustrated) gentleman still outside with no taxi to be seen (or heard).

But as I headed for the exit of the parking lot, drving around to the back of the building, I saw a cab parked, the driver kinda sitting there looking around. So I pulled up and asked if he happened to be waiting to pick someone up, perhaps a blind someone. He was indeed. The driver told me he had originally dropped the dude off back there. Guess there must have either been a misunderstanding, or the poor guy just couldn't see that he was on the wrong side of things. But I felt good for having righted the error and gotten him on his way. :)

Soooo, thoughts of the day...

1) If you like to go to Disneyland when it is packed, you can't beat Super Bowl Sunday.

2) Likewise, if pointless walking is your thing, may I suggest walking all the way to the animation building in DCA (From IASW, no less), only to find that they are no longer showing the Walt Disney movie. (I could have sworn that I had just heard that they had re-shot the opening, replacing Eisner with Julie Andrews but apparently the whole thing is gone).

3) I wonder if they will ever build another attraction that comes close to matching the overall visual beauty of Pirates.

4) Riding the monorail in the reverse direction through DCA, then dropping straight into the Tomorrowland station, without going around the Matterhorn first is very strange.

So, today I was reading one of my Company's monthly HR publications, and one of the articles was a reminder that we were not allowed to bring our firearms to the work place - that we would be terminated if we did. It went on to tell us what we should do if we accidentally brought our guns and left them in our car.

I of course am wondering why this is suddenly getting the attention of our internal press that normally reminds us about investing in our 401(k) and changes in vacation or attendence polcies.

On the other hand, I suppose I could rant about my 4th amendment rights being taken away...

This does 2 things. It allows the legislative branch to pass laws such as the Civil Rights Act without it being struck down by the Supreme Court on the grounds of, "It ain't in the Constitution, so it ain't Constitutional." Otherwise, such laws would have to be passed as amendments.

Secondly, it's what's invoked to justify one's implied "right to privacy".

Ghoulish Delight 02-14-2006 10:53 AM

So, I ran 3/4 of a mile yesterday. It's not much, but it represents the longest uninterupted distance I've run in, oh, 13 years, ever since I discovered I had developed exhertional asthma after collapsing about 3/4 of the way through a mile in PE. It took something like 10 minutes (hardly the 6:18 mile pace I was running 14 years ago), and I paid for it with an evening of asthmatic coughing fits. But it's still a pretty significant accomplishment. I should be able to make a mile by the end of the week.

Now, imagine what I could do if I manage to lose this extra 20 pounds hanging around.

Gemini Cricket 02-14-2006 11:01 AM

You'd think I could spell my own affliction..

Do you get spontaneous asthma attacks, or only when you exert yourself? Exertional asthma only affects me when I try to do any sort of aeorobic activity. I don't get sudden attacks, I just get short of breath quickly, and if I push too much, I get light headed and nauseated for a while and once that passes, I cough for a few hours. I have an albuterol inhaler. If I use that before I exercise, it extends the ammount of time I can go before I'm affected, and lessens the attack, but I gotta remember to take it 30 minutes before I start exercising. Last night, I actually didn't take it at all (I'm trying to build up my natural stamina).

The second one. Aerobic stuff kills me. But with the Advair (as long as I take it regularly) it doesn't affect me. I do keep an albuterol inhaler with me at all times. Just in case. I haven't used it in a long time. I go to the gym and do the treadmill and nothing happens. Before the Advair, I couldn't even think of doing it.

I have that, bad sinuses and Graskin's Malaloma. Other than that, I'm okay. :D

I'm all the way up to 3 or 4 packs of cloves...per year (and out of those 3 or 4 packs, I must give a quarter of them to my firends, and lose another quarter of them).

I was fine until I was 14 when, after my 4th or 5th bout with bronchitis (twice turning into walking pneumonia), my lungs finally gave up.

I'll tell you one thing, though, it's definitely improved since moving to OC out of the smog-choked Valley.

So...I am finally looking for a job. I went to an "orientation" tonight. It is in a call center, which brought back some really baaaad feelings. The pay is less than what I want, but there is a chance to earn bonuses. I have decided to go ahead and schedual an interview, but will continue looking. I also want to apply for the County, they have a mess of openings, but all require a typing test and I am not sure I am ready for that yet.

Dang it!! I sososoooo don't want to go back to work.

Mousey Girl 03-16-2006 10:52 AM

All I want to do right now is take a nap. After the 3rd phone call in 10 mins I have given up. The company I visited yesterday called me this morning and asked me to go in for an interview at noon today. I still have a lot of mixed feelings about it, but I am still interested.

The thought that keeps running through my head is that I have to put on makeup for the 2nd day in a row.

*sigh*

LOL!!! I can totally relate. I used to work with a gum chewer. She chomped it like a cow chewing its cud. It bugged me and she was 3 desks away, I always wondered what her customers thought of it. The other peeve was the popcorn munchers. I hate the smell of microwaved popcorn.

BarTopDancer 03-16-2006 01:03 PM

... I'm wondering why women consider the ladies room to be another conference room. Every day this week I've walked in the ladies room to discover groups of women discussing work. Not the causal hellos said as you pass; all out discussions. We have 8 conference rooms and 4 empty offices. And the ladies room echos so you can hear it in the office.

Mousey Girl 03-16-2006 03:39 PM

Hehehe... I thought I was the only one who calls the Fry's ads EVIL! My co-workers taunt/tempt me with them as well. Fry's is one of those stores where I enter planning to only buy "one" item, but walk out carry unplanned purchases--and a lighter wallet.

It's mail-in. In-store price is $53 (still a decent deal).

There's also a 256MB that's $8 after rebate. Dunno what the in-store is.

It looks like my resume is finally getting some attention. I just found out that one of the places I applied to is asking about me. I applied for a front office job at a local produce packing/shipping place. I know 2 people who work in the back office, one is Dawn and her boss used to work with me at SBC. Dawn was told today to let me know they got my resume and I shoud be hearing from them in the next day or 2. Best of all....it isn't call center work!!! I know not to get my hopes up, but it is frustrating waiting for the phone to ring. Yeah, it has only been a week since I started looking, but still the waiting is a pain in the butt.

I would love to go to the USH meet and be able to celebrate having a new job.

Ghoulish Delight 03-22-2006 10:41 AM

So my dad is having "minor" surgery in a few hours. He checked into the hospital yesterday after a few days of discomfort. He seems to have a skin infection called cellulitis, and he had elevated blood sugar levels (he's never been diabetic, hopefully it's just a side effect of the infection). They got him on an IV, antibiotics and insulin.

The surgery is to remove a patch of dead skin...right now I'm trying to forget the fact that after my mom told me he was in the hospital I looked up cellulitis and found that it happens to be the early stages of the flesh eating virus.

Ponine 03-22-2006 11:17 AM

This is what BT had, I'm pretty sure, and he came through it with life and limbs intact, so I hope your dad has the same good fortune. IV antibiotics are the standard treatment, just so they get into the system faster/more effectively.

Oh, how I wish that were true now...

Just got a call from my mom. My dad is NOT in good shape and it's his own damned fault.

See, it seems that, oh, 10 years ago his doctor DID tell him he had elevated blood sugar and was at risk of diabetes. At the time he was pretty significantly overweight. So he, of course, got all the imformation he could on diabetes and worked with his doctor to monitor it and keep it under control, right? Ha! No, he said, "I'll just lose the weight and eat less cake, I'll be fine." To his credit, he lost the weight with no trouble, but he never bothered to follow up and keep an eye on his blood sugar.

So here we are. Now, the other thing about my father is he patholigically avoids hospitals at all costs. So when he first started having symptoms over the weekend...he waited 3 days before saying anything and going in. Seems that had another 24 hours gone by, he stood a good chance of being dead (remember what I said about the early stages of the flesh eating virus?).

So now he's recovering from the "minor" surgery (I knew there was good reason to put "minor: in quotes) in a sensetive area that will require 3 months of recovery and plastic surgery in the form of skin grafts down the road. The think they've got it all, but won't know for sure for a couple of days (and this is where I try to forget about the article I read last week about the lady who, with the same infeciton, went from healthy to "we think we got it all when we amputated her leg" to dead in the span of a few days).

I'm a little out of it right now. Scared, and a little bit angry. Among other things, as my sister pointed out, how times have we answered questions from doctors and on medical forms in the past 10 years? "No, we have no family history of diabetes."

Not Afraid 03-22-2006 03:06 PM

DAMN! I understand both your anger and fear. Sometime you just think a good slapping would help, but it's a bit late now.

Diabetes can be VERY serious when it comes to skin, circulation conditions. I hope that they ot in there early enough. I'm hopeing and praying that is the case.

wendybeth 03-22-2006 04:50 PM

GD- I'm so sorry; I know how you feel on many counts there. My mom wound up with acute pancreatitis and damned near died- spent 5 months in the hospital and is now a surgical diabetic. (Absolutely no pancreatic function, so she does two types of insulin and takes digestive enzymes). Brought it all on herself, and still engages in very risky behavior despite her tenuous health. Very worrisome and incredibly frustrating to stand by and watch such things happen, isn't it? I feel for you and wish you and your family all the best.

Motorboat Cruiser 03-22-2006 05:22 PM

Very sorry to hear of this news. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to you and your family, GD. Please let us know if there is any way we can be of help.

SacTown Chronic 03-22-2006 05:32 PM

So very sorry to hear of this, GD. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts.

This is a scary subject for me as well. My dad has been the victim of many self-inflicted medical problems over the years. Drinking too much, smoking too much, heaping salt on everything he eats (I'm serious, you cannot eat anything off his plate. Disgusting!), and on and on. I lecture him but it's in one ear and out the other with him. Though, to his credit, he did stop drinking. But only after his doctor told him quit drinking or die. My dad also pathologically avoids hospitals and doctors at all costs. He never changes any of his bad habits until he gets scared by a medical situation. Stubborn old goat.

Dammit, now I'm scared and all worked up.

Ghoulish Delight 03-22-2006 05:36 PM

I've been summarizing for people that he's suffering from "Stubborn Idiots' Disease".

By all other measures, the man's a certified genius. You'd think he'd know better...

Now, I need to go make an appointment to get a physical and have my blood sugar checked.

Gemini Cricket 03-23-2006 01:34 PM

The surgery went okay?

:)

Ghoulish Delight 03-23-2006 01:52 PM

No news seems to be good news for now. I talked to my dad last night. He was groggy but as good as can be expected. It will be another day or so before we can be sure everything's stabalized, so it's all about waiting.

mousepod 03-23-2006 01:55 PM

Hey GD,

Here's hoping everything goes well. It's way better to have him around to goof on his stubborn refusal to take care of himself than the alternative.

Many of us hit the snooze button when we get our wake-up call. It's a good that he gets a second chance.

My thoughts are and have been with you.

Ghoulish Delight 03-23-2006 04:49 PM

So far so good. White cell count is going down, which is a sign that the infection is going away, as is the return of his appetite. The doctor says the area around the surgery is already beginning to heal, and other than when they change the dressing, he's in no major discomfort. Stuborn twit even managed to get himself out of bed and into a chair without assistance today. The changing of dressings will be an issue though as the amount of pain is requiring adminstration of some drug or another which pretty instantly knocks him out...something he's quickly growing tired of. So we'll see.

Meanwhile, he's trying to figure out a way to read the diabetes literature he's been assigned to say that "17 grapes" can be substituded with "17 creme brulees".

Mousey Girl 03-23-2006 11:18 PM

Quote:

After doing your best to hold a grudge -- something you've never been any good at -- the peaceful mood the heavens are in will talk you out of it, even if a friend did something that feels like absolute treason to you. You'll wake up feeling compassionate, and ready, finally, perhaps, to accept the apology. Still, while forgiving is a good idea, don't feel bad if you're not quite able to forget. It's called wisdom, and it comes with experience. Sorry if this wasn't a pleasant one, but learn from it.

Today at 8:30 I go for my final interview with PPSC. Tomorrow at 10 I meet with the owner of Socially Yours. I just reread her ad and it is for a Customer Service/Order Writer Supervisor position. She had emailed me and asked me what my previous salary was, I was worried that the $25.62/hr had scared her away. I also found out that one of the other places I had applied for is NOT a good idea. They are going through mass walkouts right now and it sounds a lot like SBC, but for 9/hr I would not put up with that kind of stress.

I went to my interview this morning. I would LOVE to work for this woman. It is a small company that is expanding. It is right up my ally. Only 8 workers so no office politics to worry aobut. She was worried that she could not meet my salary expectations. When I told her (again) that I knew my ending salary at SBC was pretty much a thing of the past and that I was looking for around $15/hr (still really good for Bakersfield) she let out a sigh of relief and said that that was very doable. I should hear from her Thurs or Fri. I am supposed to hear from PPSC on Thursday, so when they call I will tell them I will let them know on Friday. I sosososooooo want this other job. The owner, who I interviewed with is so sweet and her product is absolutly beautiful, I can totally see myself working there, plus the hours are awesome-7:30-4 Mon-Fri!! I really want this!!! Mousey Girl 03-29-2006 12:36 AM

There have been sirens going off around here all day. There are a lot of semi-flooded streets and gutters. I also noticed cops galore, Kern Sheriffs, CHP and BPD all over the place on my way home from my interview. I had just grabbed my cell to call my mom when I noticed a CHP truck behind me. Then I saw 2 BPD cars at the next intersection, but they were in a county pocket. Getting off the freeway I ended up behind an umarked cop car. It was nuts.

Dad's doing much better. A visit from the surgeon on Monday confirmed that the infection is going away, the surgery got everything it needed to get, and that the affected area was healing well. A visit from the plastic surgeon yesterday brought more good news in that they determined that they'd be able to begin the reconstructive surgery process today. This is good because it means he can start the recovery from that immediately, AND that there won't be a grizzly wound to go home with (which was the original assumption). It will make both his and my mom's life easier. I won't go into details of what's going to be done, it's pretty unpleasant. But progess is being made, and now the hope is that he can recover in time to not jeopardize his forthcoming retirement (he saved up 200+ sick days over 40 some-odd years to bolster his retirement, and now if he has to use more than 10, it means a cut in his retirement bottom line. Freaking irony).

And the best news of all is that when the surgeon saw him on Monday and reitterated the "You would have been dead in another 24 hours", it finally seemed to sink in what that meant. Hopefully that will finally serve as his wakeup call.

In other news, my Grandmother ended up in the hospital on Monday with pneumonia. Other than some anxiety attacks in the hospital bed, she seems to be doing okay now. I don't know how my mom's holding it together right now.

Not Afraid 03-29-2006 10:24 AM

Good news with both your Dad and Grandmother. Give your Mom a hug and tell her it will get better soon.

katiesue 03-29-2006 11:59 AM

Hugs to you and your whole family. And best wishes for speedy recoveries all around.

Cadaverous Pallor 03-29-2006 01:50 PM

I really feel for GD's mom at the moment. She's a rock (on the outside at least) a real strong lady.

Soooo, I think I did the best I could at an interview today...hopefully I'll move up to the next interview, and on to the supervisor position I've been craving. It's definitely 50/50 at this point, so we'll see.

Mousey Girl 03-29-2006 04:48 PM

Good wishes heading your way CP!!

I got a call today from ACS. They had seen my resume online and wanted to interview me. I told her, "thanks but no thanks." She asked me what my concerns were. I had to tell her that after I replied I found out who they were. They do collection work. I remember hearing about them at Union meetings. I even ran into some of their employees at PPSC's open interviews on Saturday. Basically it is a worse invironment than SBC for $9/hr and no Union support. Heck, I left SBC to get away from the stress, I don't need to walk into it again.

I love using the "Party Shuffle" of iTunes just to see what comes up. Gives me interesting sequences like:
  1. Spinning Wheel - Blood, Sweat and Tears
  2. Music (Hex Hector Remix) - Madonna
  3. Mucho Tequila - Ursula 1000
  4. Dueling Banjos - Eric Weissberg & Steve Mandel (from Deliverance)
  5. Copacabana (Remix) - Barry Manilow
  6. Change It (Live) - Stevie Ray Vaughan
  7. Your Retro Career Melted (Ursula 1000) - The Faint
  8. Whenever I Call You Friend - Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks
  9. Looks That Kill - Mötley Crüe
  10. Tiki Room Barker Bird - Adventureland Entrance - Disney

Whee! In today's episode of cutting it awfully damn close, my tax return posted at midnight - with the final payment on our May WDW trip due today. After the cutting my salary because I won't work 60 hours in the office as receptionist incident, followed by the getting hit by a metro bus incident, followed by the raging infection medical bills, followed by the days BT had to take leave without pay due to said infection, our savings account was pretty well drained. And I really didn't want to have to charge it to the credit card I've been trying to pay off. And I didn't have to!

I've decided it's a sign that we really as supposed to go.

Purdy car!!

Nick & I just got home from a morning trip to DLR. The ride down was a bit harry. Right before the 14 merges into the 5, CHP passed us, hit his lights and started doing a round robin to slow us down. We were completly stopped while they placed flares, a truck lost a tire (looked like the whole wheel) and ended up spinning out and hit another car head on in the center divider. There were 2 sheriffs and 3 or 4 CHP on the scene, with more showing up as we sat. (it was raining pretty hard at this point) A bit past that I saw something weird going on, again in the fast lane. Luckily I was going slow enough to react. There was another car that had spun out and hit the center divider head on. There were chunks of the divider in the middle lane of traffic and bits of car every where. It looked like it may have caught fire when it hit. Only thing on scene were 2 fire trucks, sitting on the right shoulder. Just past that mess, again I see something strange in front of me, a white pickup sitting partway in the fast lane and across the next lane, spun out with a flat tire and 2 other cars sitting on the right shoulder with various dents. After that it was just another spun out car on the other side of the center divider. This was all before we go to the 210.

Drince88 04-01-2006 06:49 PM

I like the car, but you forgot to mention the most important part -- what color did you get?

libraryvixen 04-01-2006 08:05 PM

Nice car!! :)

BarTopDancer 04-02-2006 04:01 PM

Thanks everyone. I am so happy, and my heart is no longer breaking into a million pieces every time I fill up. If gas prices go any higher I'll be saving money (right now I am breaking even between what it cost me to fill up and the increase in car payment).

Today I managed to clean out another whole portion of my future office (yay!) which makes almost 1/3 of it cleaned out and organized.

I also finally hung decorative item #2 - after only 2 years here. The Monet print went above the piano a few months ago, and tonight I hung my limited edition sericel thingy in the hallway where I can see it when I come downstairs. It's old school Mickey and Minnie giving each other gifts. And the mat perfectly matches my new couch, although that's entirely by accident.

Today was a "Why did I bother" day.

I have this week to do a bunch of stuff. It's all doable but will take some dedication. How much did I get done today? Not a whole lot. Why?
  • Lyra had to go to the vet. Her left face was super swollen and she needs to have an abcessed tooth extracted IF she can survive surgury. I'll know tomorrow morning after the tests come back. She's an old girl.
  • The blinds I bought yesterday were the wrong size so I had to exchange them at Home Depot. The new ones I got will fit - once I carve out pieces of the window molding to hold the brackets. The new blinds a wood and have larger brackets than the old ones.
  • The washer didn't like the load of sheets I put in it - Load Exceeded - and I couldn't get it to reset for a long while. Now I have we soapy clothes in a bucket in the kitchen.
  • I was supposed to get a check to my boss but it was in my car which I told Chris to take today since he had to drive and his car was vandalized on Saturday night and has a broken side-view mirror.
  • It was too we today to weed or plant the garden and the new plants I bought. They need to go into the ground before Sunday.
  • I have 7 pairs of unmatched socks
  • I'm totally disoriented due to staying out too late and the time change.
WTF is going on?

Prudence 04-05-2006 01:13 PM

Soooo.... Now that I'm on upper campus I get to hear and see all the festive student demonstrations! Although if they really want to get their message across they need to learn how to use the megaphone properly. Judging from the group assembled, however, it's way more about a pathetic attempt to pretend it's 1960-something. Yay whatever!

Cadaverous Pallor 04-05-2006 01:59 PM

So...I have a second interview for the supervisor job at the public library on Monday. I've heard it's only me and one other outside guy. We'll see if they want experience in this city (me) or supervisor experience (him). I believe I have a 50/50 shot.

I am enjoying my job though. The mornings seem to disappear, and the work can be both challenging and rewarding. I have help from 8:30-1:30 (she hired someone else at the same time as me, but she is only part time) so that I can get their filing and invoicing caught up and not have to worry too much about the phones. I had no idea how many first communions there were, and not being Catholic I don't quite understand why it is such a big deal.

I feel really bad about Olestra and what happened. The anal leakage thing was mostly hype from an anti-junk food group (CSPI) and the chips were actually very good. I never experienced any undesired anal leakage.

But even if true I'm sure I have one relative who would be more than happy to take the risk to stay very thin.

You didn't by chance have a burrito recently, did you, GC? That might explain the coughing. ;)

Cadaverous Pallor 04-12-2006 12:25 PM

I've always found "barking spiders" and other euphemisms to be disturbing. I really hope that no creature makes the sound of a fart when trying to communicate.

Can't we just call a fart a fart and a f.ck a f.ck? (Apparently not.)

Cadaverous Pallor 04-12-2006 05:49 PM

So.

Here's my unbelievable report. The promotion I was interviewing for is no more. The woman who was retiring has decided to stay. Sound crazy? Well, it's because her husband unexpectedly passed away last weekend. Two days before the final interview for her replacement.

The world is filled with randomness. I feel so sorry for her that I really don't care about the promotion. Her husband was retired, and they loved to travel. I can't imagine having it all set that you can finally spend all the time in the world with the one you love, only to lose him at the last minute.

So, things aren't changing for me for a while yet.

The other crazy thing is that a woman who used to work at another branch (but left months ago due to cancer) died on the same day as that other woman's husband. The same bloody day.

I was applying for her position as well, just in case. Ran-dom-ness.

Tito's Kitten 04-12-2006 09:31 PM

What is up with this stuff all seeming to happen at once??

I mean yesterday my boyfriend called me up to say that one of his coworkers committed suicide and that he left his note by his desk at work, yet no one noticed till yesterday. (My boyfriend noticed he wasn't there since Monday but he thought oh he must not be feeling well. He knew he had just broken up with his girlfriend and thought maybe he had decided to take a couple of days off. But then the police showed up at his office and they were checking this guys desk where under some papers was a suicide note.) And then my brother who is an insurance adjuster had a man commit suicide by driving his car off a cliff. It is all so incredibly sad. So much death.....

Mousey Girl 04-12-2006 10:33 PM

I forgot to check my mail from Saturday until we got home Sunday...I found a letter addressed to me from Arkansas. I know no one in AK plus they spelled my name wrong (I don't care how you pronounce it, as long as it is spelled correctly), but they knew me well enough to have my address. It was a letter telling me that David is having an affair with the widow. I had to laugh. Who ever wrote it does not know me very well at all. The only people that came to mind were 2 of Jimmy's cousins, who blame her for his suicide. My response was to call her and tell her that since she was having an affair with David she needed to fix me dinner. Dinner was mighty tastey!!! I told her that had I known that is what it took to get food, I should write a letter like that every week.

The kicker on the letter was the person who wrote it said I could always email them and ask any questions I may have...the email is cant_prove_its_me@yahoo.com. Too bad for them it had the opposite affect of what they were trying for.

It's Holy Thursday and for the Catholic guests here at the homeless shelter, our Executive Director is going to be washing everyone's feet. 8 days total, started Wednesday at sundown, ends this Thursday at sundown. So just 3 more days to decide where we're going to get massive portions of pasta and garlic bread on Thursday.

Ghoulish Delight 04-17-2006 09:02 PM

On another note...so I performed a small maricle on Friday. I had to go to the post office to mail taxes, AND to the DMV to renew my driver's license, with no appointment. Somehow, I spent less than 20 minutes total between the two of them.

For the second time today, there are 4 people outside doing a choreographed dance. Right now the tune is "Please, Mr. Postman." I don't think it's rush week, and it's a co-ed group anyhow. I have no idea why they are doing this. I feel so old.

I rode my bike on Sunday. I took it to go shopping. I had a great time. Now, two days later, the skin and muscles that tenderly cushion my pelvic bones and genitalia feel bruised. That's right, it feels like someone punched me right in the taint. Does one's body actually adjust to bike riding? Where you can ride your bike everyday to work and it doesn't damage one's private parts?

Well, does it?!

(For the record, I have a very nice, especially cushioned seat, though it is narrow. Not that my a$$ would know. My a$$ thinks I was riding a bike without a seat at all.)

So, this is the work news thread, yes? If it's too mundane to give it it's own thread, it goes in the Soooo thread.

Had a talk with the big ol' boss today. She said I did fantastic in the interview for the supervisor position that no longer exists. BUT, I didn't beat the outside guy. Oh well. She said some wonderful things about me but said it came down to experience.

She said I "did very well with what I had" and then continued to say how great I was (she used words like maturity and poise, boy have I fooled them) and what a big future I had. She then urged me to continue my schooling because she saw me taking over everything eventually. She offered her considerably large influence to help me with costs etc.

So yeah, I'm feeling pretty pumped. She also said I'm definitely in the running for the full time slot with minor managerial duties at the Main, which obviously leads to greater things down the road. That would start in July...

It's a good day

Down with Ticketmaster!

On Monday I bought tickets to the three Mighty Ducks playoff games. On Monday I was told that the Round 1 Home Game 1 would take place on 4/27. I clarified that it was taking place that day because I could not attend if it was taking place on a Tuesday. Apparently Home Game 1 was never scheduled for 4/27 and the lady who was helping me was full of it. Home Game 1 is scheduled for Tuesday 4/25. I can't go.

Sell the tickets you say? Can't do that either. They are at WillCall and Ticketmaster is not allowing name changes on playoff tickets. Why didn't you have them emailed you ask? Ticketmaster said game 1 tickets could either be shipped via UPS for $100million or picked up at WillCall.

So I say.. Down with Ticketmaster! Outrageous fees. They run boxes offices everywhere leaving few other options to buy tickets.

Stan4dSteph 04-19-2006 11:52 AM

Could you just pick up the tickets now at Will Call or does it have to be the day of the event?

No, but he's not exceptionally tall himself- average height. I'll be sure to ask him. He said that he didn't realise who Adam was until Bono walked up to him. Surprisingly, no one was bothering him at the time, though people did start milling about when they realised who was there.

Not too long ago he met a nice older couple- they wanted to buy a piano, but they had to get their son, who was waiting outside, to approve of the piano before they bought it. The son turned out to be Jack Black, who Kelly said was very nice and actually seemed kind of shy.

Not Afraid 04-20-2006 08:40 AM

Bono is short - to me. I most likely was wearing heels and he came up to my chest.

Jack Black is short too. I saw him at a concert at UCLA. I wouldn't have noticed him except he was wearing a trucker hat - not the norm for UCLA. He was about shoulder height to me.

I never seen famous people because they are usually below my line of site. ;)

Ghoulish Delight 04-20-2006 02:03 PM

So MBC, what are you up to this Saturday?

blueerica 04-20-2006 04:12 PM

Man, I'd love to have a joint in each hand, as opposed to being stuck here on campus. Alas, I am too inundated with gigantor papers to write to take a toke or two...

So....

I think I need an icy drink before my next class.

I've had the busiest day and it is still going on! What's the matter? What happened to my boring life? I like boring sometimes!

I think I just had a 4:20 4/20 revelation!

I just had the BEST Ticketmaster experience! It must've happened at 4:20.

My tickets for David Sedaris haven't arrived and the show is on SUnday. I called, entered the order number, pressed a number for a live person, waited about 30 seconds, the live person was nice, polite, helpful and printed new tickets for me to pick up at the box office on Sunday.

WOW!

Dexter and Lyra both went to the vet today. Lyra is a rock. She's going to live to 99 just to piss us all off.

Dex has an ulcer on his gum. He's on antibiotics but will probably have to have dental work done. They're doing blood work to see if he is healthy and normal otherwise. There may also be an extraction or two for him. Poor baby! He's not quite the rock Lyra is so I worry more. :(

Drince88 04-20-2006 05:20 PM

Hope Dexter feels better soon. I was wondering if something might be up medically.

You totally said oral.

blueerica 04-20-2006 08:23 PM

Awww! Dexter!!

I am freaking out about how much homework I have to do. There is no escaping it, so I'm allowing myself short little jaunts of LoT time in between... um... assignments that are shorter, and everytime I feel like I got somewhere...

OH damn....

I just feel guilty now.

The Vet called about Dexter's bloodwork. He's a perfectly healthy 9 year old boy......except for some dental issues.

So, he will get his teeth cleaned when we get back from Coachella. Then maybe he won't have stinky breath. Stinky cat breath is not as cute as it should be.

But, after his steroid and antibiotic shots yesterday, he's feeling much better already. Good boy!

Well, the best part is, it's over! I'm totally done with that class! Yay!

I felt like a complete goober. However, the "judges" were very nice. They did what they were supposed to do, and pointed out one or two things for us to work on, and then gave compliments. I'm sure they could have given us more things to work on, but the theory is that they're not supposed to totally crush us. However, that doesn't always happen, and some panels have at least one major jerk. This one was basically all good, though.

The funniest thing is that all three said something about me being "poised." One said I had "presence," was "polished," and that if I was thrown by anything my face didn't show it. Another said I appeared fairly poised and comfortable with my material, and that I didn't have any distracting mannerisms. I was praised for my speed and manner of delivery.

This is a totally new development. Usually I look like a scared bunny about to flee, talk waaaaaay too fast, and telegraph everything I feel via inadvertant facial expression. Lack of poise and polish, not to mention visible lack of confidence, have consistently been my weaknesses throughout speech, debate, etc... I suppose they're useful skills for an attorney to have, and perhaps some of ones it's less easy to teach/learn, but I am just totally shocked that I picked them up somewhere.

I suppose I should stop doubting myself and accept that this is yet another sign that I'm headed in the right direction (professionally). This is unlikely to happen, of course.

But, again -- it's over! Yay!

Mousey Girl 04-21-2006 09:20 PM

Today marked the end of my 3rd week of work. After the firing and layoffs yesterday I felt a bit shakey today. My paranoia was totally unfounded. My boss is happy with the way I have been taking care of the front office. She likes that she can come to me with a problem/puzzle and that I can quickly come up with the resolution. She also likes that I can remember seeing different company names and immediatly come up with the matching file. Most of the vendors that have called are now calling for me, using my extension and enoying that not only am I able to help them, but also know what they are calling about. I am still having my normal work week sleeping issues, but no where near like I had at SBC, my work does not haunt my dreams.

The people who know me laugh when they ask what I like most about my new job and my reply is that I can go to the bathroom whenever I want.

€uroMeinke 04-22-2006 08:31 AM

So....Earlier this week at work we got some HR publication that included among the other usual stuff, a page on "acceptable" work attire. As iread down the do's and don't's I realized that while there were the usual generic admonishions about wearing "message" shirts - nearly half specificly addressed female attire. No mini-skirts, no plunging neck lines, etc.

Clearly boobs and legs should be excluded from the workplace, but I wonder why there where similar admonisions about tight pants and package display. I guess, a nice ass doesn't distract the office as much as clevage does? Or is it important to mask the femaleness of the work environment?

Kevy Baby 04-22-2006 09:46 AM

So camel toe is acceptable in the workplace?

So, the worst nightmare of my job came very close to becoming a reality tonight.

I have a pair of greyhounds I'm sitting. One is 15 and having trouble with his back legs. I had a funny feeling that something was going to happen while their owners were gone and I was right.

I went over tonight to see them and the older boy couldn't get up at all. He didn't seem like he was in any paing, but he has completely lost the use of his hind legs. I couldn't get in touch with the owners at the 33 numbers they left me but, I had made SURE I had a neighbors number before they left. Thankfully, they answered the phone and came over to help. They ended up taking the dog to an emergency vet and I'm waiting to hear what happens next. At least I didn't find the dog dead at home. That is my worst fear. But, this was not all that comfortable of an experience.

Aren't you just mad about figs??? (Sorry, just watched Grey Gardens for the first time last night. I'm too intrigued by Little Edie.)

The tree I saved (pruned viciously, dug up and replanted) when I moved here bore for the first time last year. This year I'm expecting big things. It looks very vigorous this year and is already covered in big fuzzy leaves.

Is it a big fig tree? Was there a special release event for it? I don't remember seeing anything like this at Disneyana.

Any idea what is going on with the doggy, NA? Our dog has hip dysplasia, and her hips will occasionally lock up on her, but whatever is going on with the greyhound certainly sounds ominous. When do his parents get home?

The doggie is still at the vet. He parents are on their way home from SF now and will go immediately to the vet. The extreme amount the dog has deteriorated just since Thursday makes me thing it's time to make the tough decision. I feel really bad for the parents. Mom's had a rough time lately and starts Chemo for breast cancer tomorrow. I don't envy their position at the moment, but I do think it is time to let the big boy have some peace. Apparently, sis younger sister who is suddenly all alone in the house barked for most of the night. Poor girl. It's a sad, sad situation.

Yuck.

I blame Leo. It started after I replied to his Spongebob post.

They are such great people too. They gave me a sizable tip today for taking care of him. I'm going to take it and make a donation to a Greyhound Rescue organization in Cody's name. They do amaing work and both of their dogs were adopted through this organization.

wendybeth 04-24-2006 08:15 PM

That's very cool of them, and you as well!:snap:

Gemini Cricket 04-25-2006 05:25 AM

On the brighter side of news. I thought of a good way for people to get exercise in our country. Pedal powered PlayStation 2's and internet hookups. You hook up your PS2 and internet to a stationary bike. As long as you pedal, you can stay on. If you stop, no PS2 and internet for you.

You know what elevators need? Buttons that can be 'unpressed'. Say you hit the wrong button, hit it again and it unselects that floor. That way, if you get on an elevator and some idiot has pressed all the floors, you can undo their sh!t.

You must move to Tokyo - I have seen their elevators and marvel at their technological superiority

CoasterMatt 04-25-2006 01:41 PM

There are elevators with that technology in the U.S. - in many cases, the option is disabled...

Ghoulish Delight 04-26-2006 11:04 AM

One step forward, two steps back.

So, my dad's been home for almost two weeks, and doing well. While recovery from the surgeries has been slow and painful, he's progressing far better than initially expected. The diabetes is under control with a single daily insulin injection, oral meds, and diet control. All is well, right?

Well, he started to have abdominal pain last night. And his blood sugar was way high this morning. So my mom dragged him to the emergency room...where they diagnosed him with gall bladder disease (seemingly unrelated to anything else). He's not exactly the standard demographic for this, the most common sufferers being people who fit the "Five F's" (Female, Forty to Fifty years old, Fertile, Fat, and Flatulent...nice eh?). He's just one of the lucky ones.

So right now they're making him take a radioactive tracer so they can get a look at the gall bladder. If it's not too inflamed, it's a simple matter of laproscopic surgery to remove it. Relatively easy. If it is inflamed, lapro is too risky and they'll have to make a full incission. He does NOT need that at this point.

Sigh.

Gemini Cricket 04-26-2006 11:06 AM

Ugh. Sorry to hear that about your pop.
