It's done!! Installed and tested. I had the fire extinguisher by my side the first time I flipped the switch because...well just because.

But it works! And it's quieter! And it vents air!!

I had to take the cover and light back off to patch the ceiling, once that's dry I'll be 100% done (anyone know how long joint compound takes to dry?). One more trek into the attic to retrieve tools. My squattin' muscles will be very relieved.

Morrigoon 02-13-2009 12:08 PM

My experience is limited but the general rule of thumb for anything you need to let dry is:

20 minutes longer than you give it.

Ghoulish Delight 02-13-2009 12:17 PM

Oh and I forgot to add that closet demo is done also! I feared it might be an all day job, but a few whacks with a mallet and a couple yanks with a pry bar and voila. I might even be able to start building today.

But I'll need more beer for that.

One of my straight guy friends asked to go on the trip with me. He's such a cool guy. He said, "Take me along with you on your trip. I mean, wouldn't you want someone strong to protect you over there from whatever might hurt you? I could do that." You know, my straight guy friends just shouldn't talk to me like that. I mean, my gay ears can't take such nice talk. It made me melt a little. And, yes, he's straight straight straight. Dammit.
:D

Ghoulish Delight 02-13-2009 06:02 PM

Okay, before I go doing something retarded:

This seems too simple, so I'm clearly missing something. At home depot I found an abrasive blade that fits my circ saw and cost ~$2. The guy said it cuts metal. The blade says it cuts metal. Is this thing going to be able to cut through a 1 1/4" diameter chrome pipe? How many cuts before it's destroyed? Do I need to go buy an actual metal cutting blade?

It just doesn't seem right that a $2 disc will work.

Gemini Cricket 02-13-2009 06:05 PM

I'm sure I don't know. But make sure you wear safety goggles.
That is all.

Ghoulish Delight 02-13-2009 06:10 PM

Assuming that the walls of the pipe are reasonably thick (I am guessing a drain pipe or something similar), the abrasive blade will take a LONG time to work through. You are better off getting the real thing.

Either way, cut slow and if possible, use a lubricant (like WD40).

And screw the goggles. Goggles are for wimps. Be a man!

Cadaverous Pallor 02-13-2009 08:09 PM

He wears his goggles like a good Bob Vila. :)

The fan is SO MUCH quieter in that bathroom. This is the one thing I've wanted to fix since the moment we moved in. YAY!!! :D My husband is awesome.

Yeah, go ahead and rub it in. I've been to Home Depot probably 2 dozen times in the last week and not ONCE have I remembered to to buy WD40, which we've been in need of for months.

Asshole.

I'm sure you MUST have some other type of lube hanging around.

Well our crappy local Home Depot didn't have any other metal cutting option for a circ saw, so abrasive wheel it was. The pipes (closet rod, actually) are only 1/16" thick, so I figured it'd be fine. And it was! Once I got over my initial terror at being showered with sparks, it cut through no problem. Fun!!!

And other than some minor redesigns due to bizarre wall stud spacing, necessitating a couple extra Home Depot runs, the closet build went totally smoothly. Got it about 99% done today.

Friday the 13th seems to have changed my home improvement luck.

Today we went to breakfast at the Silver Dollar Pancake House in Corona. It made the best breakfast list in Inland Empire Magazine and was also featured in IE Weekly.

I found 2 new pairs of shoes for work - which is great because I was down to one brown pair and that just doesn't work. Target was next door so I picked up some of their white chocolate, blood orange and cinnamon. I'm not usually a white chocolate person but I was intrigued by it a few months ago and tried it. I've wanted to try it again ever since.

AND I bought myself some Tim Tams to try as well. :) Chocolate flavor. Yay!

Came home and colored my hair. Went lighter then originally planned on my daughter's advice and was nervous about it but it turned out great. Close to my normal color and covered the greys.

Now... what to make for dinner?

YAY ! Originals !

Now: I need to teach you the way of the "Tim Tam Orgasm" (also known by other names, but none so evocative of what happens the first time you try it).
  • Take one Tim Tam, and nibble off two diagonally opposing corners.
  • Dip one corner in a cup of coffee (not too hot or you'll scald yourself) and suck the coffee up through the biscuit - about 2-3 swallows should do it.
  • As soon as you feel your fingers sinking into the softened biscuit (quick now), pop the whole biscuit into your mouth and let it explode in a gooey chocolatey symphony of delight and culinary ecstacy.
  • Do it again with another one.

Today was Pug Day. I entered Thurston in the Haute Dog Pug Parade. The Pug Parade was part of a smoosh faced celebration which included a Bull Dog Beauty Contest and pagents for French Bulldogs and Senior Dogs. Thurston not only was in the Top 10 but he won the Best Legs competition! He got fabulous prizes and lots of love and kisses.

I wonder if he'll make the papers?

alphabassettgrrl 02-15-2009 08:14 PM

Good for Thurston!

Quiet day here. Spent a bunch of money on bike stuff. Cooking dinner now. How exciting, huh? And watching Tour of California coverage. For the first half an hour of the broadcast they had no signal from out on the course due to the rain. They've got one now, so we can see the laps around Santa Rosa. In the rain. That's got to be awful.

Oh, you "government types" get all the holidays! Our office* is closed NEXT Tuesday, but I have to take a vacation day. (It's only our New Orleans office, all others have no clue that there's anything special going on.)

Barkus was this weekend, but I decided to do a couple of regular parades instead. Unfortunately, the offical Barkus website has exceeded it's bandwidth for the month. I did snag (literally, from the air) a strand of glass beads, though!

I'll probably skip the parade on Wednesday - but Thursday -->Tuesday I'll probably go to most if not all of the Uptown parades (well, maybe only part of one on Tuesday so the Mayor can see my costume, before we head down to the Quarter). Fingers crossed that the weather holds. It's been showery off and on for this weekend, but never while I've been watching a parade!

madmonkeygirl 02-15-2009 09:04 PM

lindyhop 02-15-2009 09:26 PM

Monday night when I got to the gym the song playing over the sound system was "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by I don't know who the band is. The same song was playing when I got to the gym Thursday night. Okay, it was the same time as Monday so they're playing the same loop. But today in the middle of the afternoon at a completely different Bally's they're playing the same song when I walk in.

By the way, I've never seen "Breakfast at Tiffany's" so we don't have that in common.

Sooooo...first the news, two Fridays ago, that I'll be losing my kitchen at the end of the month. Then, 4 days later, the news that my biggest store and most reliable customer is closing their doors at the end of the month. Now, today, a call from my workers that, guess what, he's taking a full-time job, she's pregnant, and neither will be available to work after the end of the month. The Universe definitely wants me to change my work situation.

Sooooo...I'm exploring the possibility of buying that store and converting part of it into the space I need to do my baking. At this point, I'd even be interested in farming out the work to a co-packer, thereby freeing my time up to get bigger orders, add a couple more farmer's markets, and do more theatre.

I'm very interested, Universe, in some clarity on this issue. Please get back to me ASAP. Thanks, Jim.

Morrigoon 02-16-2009 09:58 PM

So I may not have gotten into spring cleaning, or spring remodeling projects, but today I did accomplish some spring planting, and I'm quite pleased.

The front door side of my front yard has been looking rather barren and I wanted to get a rose to balance out the one on the other side. I wanted to add other stuff, but couldn't place anything else till I put the rose in. So since roses were 50% off, I finally got my rose :) And since the rose was going in, I could finally plant other stuff.

I wanted something fragrant, I was originally thinking jasmine, but haven't seen it in a while and the gardenia was also 50% off, so got that and some lavender.

I also had a basil plant that's been sitting around a while waiting to get planted, so that went in the ground today as well.

It's a bit messy but you get the idea of where it's going. I think a few weeks of growth will help it show better.

CoasterMatt 02-16-2009 10:12 PM

Very nice, Morrigoon :)

Well, a few things finally went wrong with the closet project yesterday while installing lighting. The first hole I drilled to pass wires through led me to the discovery of some sort of metal plate between the crappy built-in desk (where there clearly used to be a vanity) and the closet. No clue what that's about, but I don't own the tools necessary to drill through it, so I had to pick another spot and hope for the best.

Unfortunately I didn't think the 2nd spot through very well and drilled a hole in a stupid spot. So that meant a 3rd hole. Fortunately I don't really give a crap about there being a couple extra holes in that built in desk.

Then after all that it turned out that I was about 10" of cable short to wire the lights as I wanted them. There should have been plenty based on my initial plans, but due to a few factors, things got shifted and there wasn't enough. Determined to make yesterday the first day in a couple weeks without a trip to Home Depot, I just sacrificed another lamp (one that we were using previously to light the closet, so no longer necessary) for its cord. Worked perfectly.

So now we've got stable shelving, spiffy chrome hanging bars, and a 67% increase in linear hanging space. Hooray! It went so well, I'm thinking of doing the same in the 2nd bedroom. But that'll be after fully finishing this one (patching and painting left to do), and after some general house organizing/getting rid of crap.

Seeing as I measured and remeasured and remeasured countless times, I can hardly help but know that.

The dorky part is that I could have looked at it before and after and given that 67% figure correctly WITHOUT measuring.

Once it's painted I'm going to take pictures. But I can describe the change pretty succinctly.

Before:
A single 9 1/2` shelf at a height of ~70" and a single 9 1/2' bar just beneath it. All supported by 2 supports*.

After:
Essentially raised that 9 1/2' span up so that the hanging bar is at 80". Instead of a single 9 1/2' length of shelf/bar, it's now 3 separate pieces of shelving, 2 separate bars, supported by 7 angle brackets attached to studs.

Then at a height of 40", there's a 38" hanging bar w/shelf on either side of the closet, leaving a 38" space in the middle so we can hang long items from the top bar. So it now looks something like this (not to scale):

========= ========= ============
----------------------------- ---------- 80"

================================
----------------------------------------- 40"

---------------------------------------- Floor

Nothing fancy, but way better than one collapsing shelf.

*If you can call what was there "support". Whereas an intelligent person would use a shelf support that looks like this:
-------
|....../
|..../
|../

Whomever put that shelf up used supports that were JUST the angle part:
....../
..../
../

Gee, I wonder why the shelf was sagging.

Once it's painted I'm going to take pictures. But I can describe the change pretty succinctly.

Before:
A single 9 1/2` shelf at a height of ~70" and a single 9 1/2' bar just beneath it. All supported by 2 supports*.

After:

On a lighter note, I've been reading a story on he Consumerist about a guy who's dad lost his iPhone. The kid who found the phone took pictures of himself and emailed them to his friends which also sent a bcc to the owner. Long story short, the readers of Consumerist tracked the guy down and he was shamed into returning it. During the "hunt" they came up with some creative and hilarious riffs of the insult "douchbag". Some of these have me literally LOL. My favorites so far:

Soooo...

About 10 years ago, my condo was sacked. The miscreants made off with ALL my music, all my electronics... they even took my espresso machine and microwave. Bastards... kicked my cat (Boomer, what a sweetie!), generally turned the place upside down.

So one day I've got over 300 CDs, the next maybe 8 or 9 that apparantly slid off the top of the last box as they were carrying them out the door. Put me off music for a while, it did. Sorta took the starch out of the whole thing for me.

Fast forward, I've replaced some, added a lot of others... some I couldn't get any more. One in particular I've been wanting hard... dada, Puzzle... but it's out of print. I've been loathe to purchase it at its current high price (see LoT username).

Today, I hold said ridiculously overpriced CD in my hot little hands with a smile on my face.

I just thought I remembered how much I enjoyed it.

Ugh, mine are so picky, if I didn't make them both a lunch, they really would go hungry. My daughter must have peeled, sliced cucumber with lime and a little salt. My son needs to have sharp cheddar cheese, which I need to cut into the perfect sized cubes, plus 2 cinnamon graham crackers.

It's like ToriBear's cat and the flossing. Once they got me to make it for them, they knew I would! Meh, so they get what they want for school lunch. I'm ok with that. I even write notes and put them in their lunches. I figure when they get older, they won't want anything to do with the dorky food I make them. I'm probably weird about it and overcompensating because I was a latchkey kid and had to have hot lunch every day throughout my school years, and my mom didn't cook at all. If I had asked for sliced cucumbers? Geesh. Can't imagine what the answer would have been.

Mousey Girl 02-20-2009 05:54 PM

I was just the opposite. My mom always made my lunch. I begged to be able to buy a school lunch. She also made all of our bread. I used to trade sandwiches just to be able to have store bought bread.

Alex 02-20-2009 05:57 PM

Never mind, missed the second paragraph.

But I wouldn't be so sure they won't want you to keep it up. Or that they won't just change their irrational demands to new things as they get older.

OMG, I remember people like you -- I wanted to be you! I remember one time when we were required to bring a sack lunch for a field trip and I couldn't find anything at home to make my own lunch. I was exactly the same way. All I really wanted growing up was a cardboard pizzas from the lunch line....or, Wonder Bread, Tang, Zingers, Bologna and American Cheese. What I got was white cheddar and turkey on whole wheat or raw peanut butter on wheat.

Now, if I pack a lunch, I pack something more long the lines of what I grew up with. Yummy.

Dude...it's nature sending an ambiguous subliminal message to you; it either means:

1. You need to accommodate more wisdom.
2. You can't cram anymore wisdom into your head.
3. You should remove the docket spike from under your pillow.

BTW, enduring hernia surgery just to secure Vicodin is a tad obsessive...you can get a GP to prescribe 'em without going near a horsepiddle.

Besides, all you have to do is grasp the Dentist's private bits firmly in your hands and say "We aren't going to hurt each other...are we?".

hugs,

BarTopDancer 02-22-2009 10:19 AM

In elementary school I was able to pick 2 days a week to buy hot lunch. If I did extra chores, or was extra good I could pick a 3rd. I didn't get to pick what was in my lunch, and was usually leftovers in Tupperware, which sound good now, but at the time were a target for teasing (what 4th grader brings leftover steak). I hated sandwiches (mom only used Roman Meal bread unless she was on a WW kick, then I got whatever bread she was eating) and would bring them home uneaten.

In middle school Lunchables came out, and it was much easier on my mom to send me with those and a squeeze-it. Healthy, no. But she was a healthy cooker who was on a perpetual WW kick by then and rabbit food was very much a part of dinner.

High school was awesome. I got to buy lunch every day. I loved those crappy turkey sandwiches and school chocolate chip cookies. Heck, I still love the chocolate chip cookies they serve.

Looking back, I was very lucky. I always had a lunch and I had the best of both worlds.

Alex 02-22-2009 11:29 AM

Up until late in high school I always qualified for the subsized/free dining programs at the school.

So not only did I get free school lunch (and therefore that is what I ate) but breakfast as well (which taught me the joy of regular Rice Krispies with chocolate milk; chocolate Rice Krispies are a pale comparison).

Halfway through high school I was one of the few students with off campus privileges because I was taking courses at a nearby community college. That college also had a culinary program that operated the on-campus cafeteria which included a very nice bakery. I would buy a couple trayfuls of the bakery items and then sell them at a hefty profit in the cafeteria back at school. That funded me eating whatever the heck I pleased.

Mousey Girl 02-22-2009 11:45 AM

I need to get The Boy into the free lunch program. I now qualify. It sucks.

cirquelover 02-22-2009 11:57 AM

You were quite the entrepeneur Alex! I wish I would have thought of that.

I think for lunch it was usually bologna or that god awful cheese loaf, I think it was bologna or fake ham with little specks of cheese in it. I still can't look at that stuff!

BDBopper 02-22-2009 12:00 PM

I thought of you guys yesterday!

One of my good friends from Michigan was in Southern California over the past week and she got to spend a day at Disneyland with one of her grown sons. Well yesterday a box comes in the mail. She sent me a keychain of Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto with my name on it, a Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney pin, and a box of chocolate from Disneyland. It definitely brought a smile to my face.

Now if only I can get a house key to my own place to use with this nice keychain one of these days!

Could I talk anyone into FedEx'ing a pair of plain black mouse ears this way for Wednesday delivery? I'll supply the FedEx account.

On a sad note, I had to have one of our ratties put to sleep today. He was old, sick and paralyzed in his back end. I had been feeding him baby food by hand for the last few weeks but last night, after eating less and less, he wouldn't eat at all. I also had to look up Cat Stevens to remember exactly who he was. But at least I knew the name.

Chris called me at 7:45 this morning from the side of the road. He had a blow out while driving on the freeway. This seems to be the year of forcing him to do thd things he's been putting off - first the hernia, then the wisdon tooth (surgery being scheduled soon) and now the tire. I think I'd better help him make a list of what else he's been putting off.

Yeah, well, there are only so many things I can control. I'm not a very good co-dependent. But, I am a bitch.

Not Afraid 02-25-2009 10:24 AM

He just called. He's getting 4 new tires because they were all showing separation. The spare was the one that had the blow out - it was put on after the other one had a leak. I look at that information and I am glad that the blow out didn't result in a serious accident.

Now, what is it I need to do that I've been putting off because, I do the same thing. We both have degrees in procrastination.

Since I can't put an actual date on it, I believe it has been quite a while (I'm thinking August???). In defense, he does have a full size spare and not a donut-type spare.

Well, thank goodness this did not happen on the way to Yosemite! He and the car are okay (aside from the tire)?

Not Afraid 02-25-2009 10:58 AM

He's fine, he was close to getting off the freeway so he was in a right side lane. It could've been worse.

Were taking my car to Yosemtie and I have 2 new tires on the front and will be getting 2 new ones on the rear before we go. Now, my car has 90k miles on it, so there may be other problems that occur.

alphabassettgrrl 02-25-2009 11:11 AM

I'm so glad he's ok! Blow-outs can be either no problem except getting a new tire, or they can be really nasty.

Lots of things musing around in my head these days. Haven't had time to write them down and sort them out. So many things that need to get done; no time for "extra" things.

Be careful, DP.

I have the worst feet; they take forever to warm up. I always try to do ankle rotations, slow tendus and some releves before class starts, but since I am perpetually 5 minutes late everywhere I go, that doesn't always work out. As a result, many times my feet really hurt during plies. :(

Andrew 02-25-2009 12:44 PM

I'll have to get there early and do some releves to stretch my feet, while using the bar for some added support. I totally didn't think about stretching the balls of my feet - I'm always working on my legs. That's a really good tip!

I'm going for my walk later tonight, so I'm hoping I can loosen my foot back up.

As with GD, none of the font identifiers I've tried have been very helpful.

Sorry, unless it is hiding here, I couldn't find it.

Sashapants is such a silly kitty. No delicate dipping down into the food bowl for her. No, she lies on her belly in front of the bowl and just drops her head in. Silly!

In my next life, I want to be a pampered house cat. No more of this jet setting about. (I swear if I never see LAX gate 67A again it will be too soon. Sadly, too soon will be about 11:45 next Thursday evening. At least I get to depart from a different gate...)

Trying to relax from a day full of stress and finally getting Bon Jovi Tickets for April 24th at the new Joint at the Hard Rock in Vegas. Bday present for myself. :) What a day it's been. Glad to have the tickets in my hand to prove it's really going to happen.

Mousey Girl 02-27-2009 07:18 AM

I just discovered the other half of my closet is FULL of stuff I used to be able to wear. Now I can wear most of it again. My only issue is that while I weigh less, my shape has definatly changed. My goal for the weekend is to go through my bedroom and actually put stuff away and get rid of all of my size 26 & 28 clothes that no longer fit. I am so excited! I have been putting off cleaning my room forever and now I have an excuse, to find out what I actually have burried in there.

I don't recommend your weightloss diet plan tho :( stress blows big green chunks!

madmonkeygirl 02-27-2009 10:51 AM

I wish i could stay on the couch all day long. I can't move. Im sore and stiff all over from yesterday. Didn't even drink but feel like i was hit by a truck...lol all for the love of Bon Jovi i guess. The aftermath finally calm and cool for once since the whole announcement and ticket stress.

Hey Euro and NA you should not procrastinate when it comes to car maintenence cuz then you can really end up injured or else damage your cars more than if you took care of them in the first place.

alphabassettgrrl 02-27-2009 04:10 PM

MG- yay for finding new clothes in your closet! Yay for the interview!

I feel good because I got a longish bike ride in this morning. I feel baddish because after my shower I discovered my ankle is once again having some issues and I had to ice it. My foot is still cold. Hope it's ok to ride tomorrow and Sunday. Got stuff planned.

Betty 02-27-2009 04:38 PM

More layoffs. I've survived this round. Sad though... good people.

Mousey Girl 02-27-2009 04:42 PM

I got a call this morning from one of the temp agencies I'm trying to use. The company I was temping for at Christmas wants me next week, Wed-Fri and maybe part of the following week. This would not interfere with the job I'm interviewing for since it wouldn't start until April 23rd.

So last night we saw a Production of Medea at the Orange County High School of the Arts. One of the participants from our Lucent workshop was in the show, so we wanted to show our support. It was a High School production, so still a bit rough around the edges, but none-the-less a rather sophisticated staging of iconic Greek tradgedy. They did a great job of integrating the chorus into the play (I'm always curious to see how chori are addressed in these stagings), using dance and choreography to add to their narrative commentary. It was great fun to see.

It was also fun to walk into a high school drama class - since both of us were Thespians in our past lives, it brought a bit of nostalgia to the mix - and perhaps even a bit of jealousy - I don't think any of the productions I was in reached this level of sophistication. It was also fun to meet our friend after her performance and congratulate her.

We also talked to her mom, who we also met at the Lucent workshop (though she didn't participate), and heard how the experience changed her daughter's life. This was her first show, she got in with the audition she worked on in the workshop and she turned her grades around so she could be in the show. It made me all the happier that we were there to show our support. (We of course encouraged her mom to take her to see some more lucent shows - like at Coachella, heh)

Afterwards, we did what we used to do anytime after a show - hit a local coffe shop, this time Hof's Hut where we chatted about Greek tragedy, Woody Allen, our high school theater experiences, and much more.

A great evening and it just made me feel Good.

Disneyphile 02-28-2009 02:43 PM

Very cool!

I hope Lucent does another workshop in the future. I'd certainly like to check it out.

Prudence 02-28-2009 03:19 PM

Our little container garden is growing up a storm. It's so much fun to watch it all come alive. Our peas are growing so fast you can almost just sit there and see the little tendrils extending and curling around one another. Our poppies are blooming, as are the snapdragons and pansies. The parsley is going insane. Anyone want some parsley? The citrus trees are all blooming - a little late, but I'm still hopeful. The plant guy at the market had tomato and bean starts, so it must be about time to plant those as well. So crazy! I wouldn't even think of planting those until May back home.

Cadaverous Pallor 02-28-2009 03:28 PM

The bunnies love parsley.

We keep saying we'll do a veg garden for bunny food.

Morrigoon 02-28-2009 05:24 PM

Just bought some alyssum and some pansies to fill in the empty spaces in my front garden. I debated buying a second lavender, but I have a sneaking suspicion that, much like alyssum, it'll turn out to be a "spreading" plant. Am I correct in that guess?

I'm so glad I bought my new rose when I did. The garden center (at Wally World) has no roses now.

alphabassettgrrl 02-28-2009 08:01 PM

Goonie, lavender generally forms a shrub type form. The alyssum will self-seed and fill the available space without crowding too much the rest of the plants. Alyssum is an annual, but mine haven't visibly died at all. They've bloomed forever, it seems.

I survived day two of my three-day mountain biking weekend. Yesterday was 19 miles, today was 9, and tomorrow will probably be in the mid-teens. It's good to be back on the bike. Now I need to get some road-riding in next week.

bewitched 02-28-2009 08:08 PM

I can't plant anything except shrubs or potted roses for about 2 months. Kansas sucks.

Oh, and we have about 4"-5" of snow on the ground today. Luckily I've already mentioned how much Kansas sucks.

lindyhop 02-28-2009 08:15 PM

So here it is Saturday night and I'm home. I go dancing every Saturday night at PBDA but they're dark tonight. Normally I would go to Disneyland instead but I decided a night at home would be better than sitting and watching other people dance. The regulars at the park don't mix the way I'm used to at PBDA.

I got my dancing in last night though. I went to Atomic Ballroom in Irvine. I'm taking a class there and would like to be more of a regular there. I didn't dance a lot but I had a good time. I danced with one guy who was really good and I realized he was Shesha (yes, that's his name) who's won lots of swing competitions and also happens to be the owner of Atomic. It's so fun to dance with someone who's really good. They pay attention to you and make sure they're dancing to your level but also see how far they can push it. In other words they don't assume you only know the basics. It's such a refreshing change from some guys who are so into their own moves they don't notice their partner is barely keeping up.

So I'm not dancing tonight but I'm thinking about it.

For all of you buried in snow, I feel for you. That cold stuff would feel really good on the SUNBURN I got yesterday.

Ghoulish Delight 03-02-2009 10:22 AM

Man, what a great weekend. We somehow accidentally ended up with no plans. Not that we don't love going out, seeing friends, visiting family (we do love it, which is why we always find ourselves booked), but our often full schedule makes these rare weekends feel like a luxurious treat. And we made the most of this one.

Got home from work Friday night and immediately got started prepping to paint the bathroom ceiling and the rebuilt closet. Went way better than expected, and we were putting primer on the walls by 7PM. By 9, primer coat was done, leaving the rest of the evening for...whatever.

Slept in a little on Saturday (well, stayed in bed, not so much sleeping), quick home depot run for paint, and by 3PM had the day's painting done. That left just some touch up in the bathroom to be done Sunday. On top of that, we began what will hopefully end up being a total reorganization of the house, beginning with the bedroom and the garage.

Through it all, we'd been watching Top Chef. We missed the season, but spotted the marathon that was airing Wednesday before the finale*, so we had the whole season queued up on TiVo. We'd work for a while, take a break to watch a couple episodes, work some more.

Feeling like we needed to reward ourselves for a job well done, and craving some top notch dining after the Top Chef glut, we treated ourselves to dinner at Marché Moderne. Definitely one of the finer meals of our lives. This is going to sound weird, but the standout dish, among the several astonishingly good things we ate, was the coriander pickled carrots. That's right, pickled carrots. True cullinary genius can be found in the simplest of dishes. And that is in no way meant to denegrate the rest of the meal.

Living the good life.

* Regarding Top Chef - so glad Stephan lost. He seems like a good chef, but what a prick! I wish Carla had said no to Casey's suggestions. F*ck Casey for talknig Carla into doing stuff she wasn't comfortable with, but Carla, what were you thinking? I thought you'd figured out to screw the pressure to overreach and just do what you do well! A shame. But I'm okay with Hosea winning. And now I want to go to Moorpark and try Cafe Firenze.

Strangler Lewis 03-02-2009 10:51 AM

I honor your carrots. One of my favorite dishes last year was a head of cauliflower that had been rubbed and impregnated with cilantro and bits of hot green chili, then steamed to perfection.

Not Afraid 03-02-2009 03:02 PM

I am cleaning out my closet. I've taken out all of the clothes I haven't worn in quite a while - unless they're black - and putting them on the bed to try on. Many of my clothes no longer fit me, so into the donate pile they will go. I'm sure that will leave MANY holes in my wardrobe, however.

What I find difficult is that I have 2 very DIFFERENT types of clothing I wear. Either my clothes are super casual and weather-versatile or they are fun and arty stuff. There isn't much cross-over between the two.

A larger closet would be nice. ;)

JWBear 03-02-2009 04:01 PM

As some of you might know, I'm doing the Disneyland half marathon this Labor Day. My sister in California (who some of you have met) is going to join me and we'll 'play' in the parks before hand (yes, realizing it's not going to be our normal April/October type crowds). She had the brilliant idea of bringing our Mom from Portland down too, for her birthday (which is in early August). For all the Conservative bashing that takes place on this board, I thought a little turn-about was fair play.

However, there is a basis in reality as Obama does want to increase the tax rate on the rich.

alphabassettgrrl 03-03-2009 11:21 PM

Top tax bracket at one point was 90-something percent. I don't remember when, but it used to be high.

Alex 03-03-2009 11:53 PM

The record top marginal tax rate was 94% at the end of World War II. In fact for most of the history of the income tax until Reagan the top rates were 70% or above.

But you have to keep in mind that those top tax rates applied to very few people compared to now.

In 1941, for example, the top marginal rate was 81% but that was only on income above $5,000,000.

In 1945, it went up and was broadened. 94% on income above $200,000.

However, in inflation adjusted dollars, that 1941 would be on income above $69.7 million, I doubt that applied to even a few dozen people at the time. Even the $200,000 adjusts so $2.3 million a year.

By contrast, the current max rate of 35% applies to everything over $357,700*. Still definitely the cream of the crop but hardly the extreme far end of the curve.

Anyway, my point being that everybody likes throwing around the top marginal rate but that is pretty irrelevant without knowing how many people it affects. Obama could outrage Republicans by advocating a 100% marginal rate on incomes over $1.3 trillion.

*All of these numbers are for married filing jointly.

I believe it was Steph who asked for a photo of our finished closet. Forgot to take one before loading clothes in, but here it is with clothes.

That top shelf/bar goes all the way across, and on the other side is an identical lower shelf/bar to the one you see. The space between the top shelf and the ceiling is JUST perfect for fitting standard file boxes.

No, actually.

ETA: Well, I suppose I can't determine exactly what you're seeing. You may have a box of wire hangers sitting next to you. Or perhaps you're staring at another closet. Or you could be hallucinating.

So perhaps you do see wire hangers. But there are none pictured in the photograph of our closet.

Still I do miss getting shrunk.

So today I learned about the awesomeness that is manzanita branches. We found this place near the LA Flower Market where this guy makes freaking amazing centerpieces with them. Literally cements the branch onto a wood base, then glues flowers, moss, hangs crystals, etc. on it. I guess it's all the rage in decorator circles. I haven't found anything online that even touches this guy's work though.

Oh, and the fabric sellers in the fabric district must be getting hungry. I mean, they never lacked for assertiveness, but these days you just wouldn't believe how aggressively they try to sell you cloth! Quite unpleasant, actually.

Hey, thanks you guys- really, I'm fine, as is Tori. She wasn't close to my mom, as my mom was rather self involved and didn't try to cultivate relationships with her grandkids. She's very close to her Gram Trudy, so we're fine on that front. It's just really weird- my mom was a total hypochondriac all my life, so I thought for sure she'd outlive us all. Don't know the cause of death yet, but I suspect she over medicated herself and let her blood sugar (she was a very fragile diabetic and prescription pill addict) drop too low. The sheriff said that it looked like she passed on in her sleep, but we'll know more after the autopsy. We were just this month trying to move her into an assisted living facility, but I guess that's not a problem anymore. Anyway, thanks to all of you- I appreciate it.

Oh, I believe. I am so very sorry. I will be going through it soon myself. This is when it sucks to be an only child. I'd love to have some siblings to fight with and guilt into helping me clean out the mess. You have all my sympathy, KS. For real.

katiesue 03-09-2009 07:13 PM

Deebs 03-09-2009 07:20 PM

I shouldn't kid, I know you have a sibling challenge. But my mom is killing me. I just wish for someone to share responsibility for decisions related to her care. She is a mess in every way. The house is a disaster and it's going to take several dumpsters to even make a dent in the junk.

katiesue 03-09-2009 07:25 PM

My friend Juan runs the box and ship. So he'll dever as many as I need :) And my cousins have been a great help with all this. It wouldn't be so bad if we lived closer but we don't.

Not Afraid 03-09-2009 07:41 PM

My Mom's house was a total disaster as well. Four bedrooms, formal LR/DR Family room , kitchen and garage full of crap. I'm sure there was some good stuff in there as well, but you had to get through all of the crap to find it. My SIL and her daughters came down one weekend and sorted stuff and gone someone who re-sells crap to come pick it all up. Every once in a while I'll miss something and wish I had thought about it 10 years ago, but .......oh well. As it was, I got too much crap, some of which I'm still hauling around. Anyone need a piano?

katiesue 03-09-2009 07:52 PM

My sister is taking the piano. I'm trying to sort through and weed out the good crap. There is some. My grandmother owned the house originally (1950) and conveniently sold it to my parents with all the crap intact. So we've got 4 generations of peoples crap in there.

My grandparents, two of my great grandmothers lived with them before they died, my dad's family stuff when his mom died, my parents, my aunt, my sister, myself and my mom inherited everything from her great uncle. It's mind boggling.

bewitched 03-09-2009 08:16 PM

swanie 03-09-2009 08:22 PM

According to Apple, your G4 uses an Ultra ATA 100 drive. I am not sure if this is the same as an SATA

wendybeth 03-10-2009 12:46 AM

I blame today on the Lashpair:*

Loads of snow, and a crappy drive out to my mom's place, where we discovered she'd pulled one last crappy evil act before departing. More details later, but suffice to say grief has been replaced by intense anger and relief that I NEVER have to deal with her again. My mother was truly insane- how we turned out, I'll never know. I feel a very long LJ post coming on.

*Lashpair are responsible for snow only, not psychotic, drug addicted geriatric patients. As far as I know, anyway.;)

Stoat, STOAT !! It's working.

Now we just need the Icicles to grow back...

Moonliner 03-10-2009 05:32 AM

The pair has no plans to visit the east coast.

We are having very nice weather.

Your hypothesis is confirmed WB.

If you're serious about the piano - yes!

That's what I thought - thank you Moonie.

Sorry T :(

Anybody else interested?

That's even more depressing than the new of her passing. :(

Kevy Baby 03-10-2009 08:31 AM

I REALLY don't want to go to work today. It is 8:30 and I haven't even showered yet (I should be there by now).

Okay: time to get motivated...

Snowflake 03-10-2009 09:56 AM

KS, I'm sorry, wow, that's craptastic, 4 generations, goodness knows what stuff you will uncover.

I've got too much crap, too. :-(

WB, hang in there!

No es bueno. I haven't been so hot, myself. Between the bank, my tummy troubles and still being off sleep-wise... Ugh.

Hang in there - and I hope you're not getting sick. :(

Disneyphile 03-10-2009 11:42 AM

I'm nursing my foot again.

I didn't take good care of last week's sprain, and attempted to dance on it last night. It's a tad pissed at me. (I'm just too damned determined to not let anything stop me.)

So, I'm definitely staying completely off of it as much as possible for the next few days, and using ice.

You must be double-jointed.

Feel better. Post pics.

Morrigoon 03-10-2009 11:54 AM

When it heals a bit, may I recommend some mid-week (as in middle of the week between dance classes) heel lifts to help strengthen the muscles?

It's not from that... it's the high impact of the repeated jumps on the ball of my foot. We don't have to do the jumps - only the releves, but, of course, I like to challenge myself. However, even though my spirit/will says "Yes", my body is saying "No".

I'm going to order some jazz sneakers, since they have shock absorption unlike my regular dance shoes. It should help greatly until some more weight comes off. In this case, weight really does matter.

Sooooo..... I think this thread is cutting edge and ahead of the rest of the world. Before "status updates" on MySpace, Facebook and Twitter were all the rage, this "Sooooo....." thread was already used and shared by a group of swanky people at LoT (and similar threads on other bulletin boards)!

It certainly makes it easier to communicate certain things than other means. I just got done sending out over 50 individual emails inviting people to the Alpha Facebook Page. Fingers hurt.

Alex 03-10-2009 02:53 PM

If you have to do that often, I hope you find one of the more efficient options for doing that. Unless you had extensive personalization in each one.

Not Afraid 03-10-2009 03:49 PM

I couldnt' send mass emails without setting off the spam alerts.

Not Afraid 03-10-2009 03:54 PM

You can all become fans of Alpha on Facebook.

bcc

Not Afraid 03-10-2009 04:06 PM

Nope. I'm sending through a business account and they consider it spam if of a certain number of people are CC'd or bcc'd.

Snowflake 03-10-2009 04:07 PM

I'm a fan of Alpha Pet Care, I just wish I lived closer so I could benefit from the services. Or, more accurately, Tango could benefit.

If you use Outlook with Word as your email writer, you can use the mail merge feature for emails as well.

I am sure there are also other similar tools to achieve this well.

Prudence 03-11-2009 10:18 AM

I want to be a fan of pet care services that cover the Torrance area.

Well, that does suck. I hate that anxious feeling. I'm sorry, b. If we lived closer together, we could go do something crazy and get our ya-yas out. I wish we could go to The Edison for Lucent Dossier.

Morrigoon 03-11-2009 08:45 PM

Coolness, I just got an email from a commercial real estate firm to set up an interview for a marketing coordinator position.

I just figured out animation in Photoshop. I will probably annoy you all with fun avatars for months now. ;)

This current one only took a few minutes to create. :)

Reach for the Stars! I do love your animated avatar.

I use Photoshop practically everyday, but it's all for work reasons, still photography and print publications. Your seemingly simple but very cool avatar is inspiring me to dive deeper into more of Photoshop's untapped capabilities.

Are you sure it wasn't ImageReady that you were working in? I don't believe that Photoshop does do animation

Morrigoon 03-12-2009 02:53 PM

It does, I've made a few animations.

It sure does! There are frame views and timeline views for different types of keyframe editing. :)

Click on "Window" in the File menu and then open "Animation" and you'll see the controls. :)

I wonder if this is also part of PS elements? Doubt it! Checking now.

Ghoulish Delight 03-12-2009 03:27 PM

Must depend on what version of PS. CS 8.0 doesn't have it.

Kevy Baby 03-12-2009 03:51 PM

Yeah, I am using CS2 version (Mac) of Photoshop. Any time I needed to do any animation, I just went to ImageReady - stuff ports over nicely.

I wonder if the platform has anything to do with it: I know DP is on a Mac, and I am pretty sure GD is on a PC. I am not sure about Snowy or Morri.
