I'm getting a chance to do a charity shoot with some Hollywood big wigs in a couple weeks.

SOMEONE PINCH ME!!!!

I'm sitting here at my desk and there's some sort of speechifying going on on the steps outside my window. Talking, applause, etc. Then, I realize that the voice sounds really familiar. I peek out the window - yup, there's a senator outside. I could have spit on the top of her head.

JWBear 07-02-2008 01:18 PM

They started putting a new, pungently rose scented, soap in the soap dispensers here at work. Now the bathrooms all smell like a cheap Texas whorehouse.

lashbear 07-02-2008 01:29 PM

I've never been in a Cheap Texas Whorehouse, so I wouldn't know.

A Cheap Sydney Warehouse, yes.

Oh, and NA: I believe the threshold with you is 10 minutes absence from the LoT = MIA, yes ? :p

Today, I treated myself and bought Nina Simone's Anthology on CD. Amy Who-house? Man, I love her. Yeah, she apparently was a homophobe, but she's dead now... can't do any harm now... :D

JWBear 07-02-2008 03:12 PM

I LOVE Nina Simone!!!

(Too bad about the 'phobe bit. I did not know that.)

(ETA: I'm listening to her right now. I love having my iPod at work)

We watched "Lars and the Real Girl" last night. You should put it in your queue.

Went to Knott's yesterday...and surprisingly had a blast. Finally Wolfette has done extreme rides and loves them!

Kevy Baby 07-03-2008 10:15 AM

I have been wanting to get to Knotts for a while now. It's been about 20 or so years the last time we went was when Susan and I were first dating - we used to get in for free because a friend of hers worked there at the time.

I went a few weeks ago. It went waaaaaay down hill. We also went during school field trip week. It was horrible. And security... they would yell at everyone for anything. I felt like I was in school again.

One thing I noticed (that they can't really help due to the nature of the rides) is that the lines are so long because they can only put one car on the track.

I think Disneyland spoiled me. Shaded queues, security that doesn't yell at you, a park that I know my way around...

wolfy999 07-03-2008 11:05 AM

Did everything but Excelerator and Boomerang....only because Wolfette's equilibrium got knocked off by Revolucion, so she chickened out on those two. Rode Silver Bullet 4 times and I know she would have gladly kept riding that until closing.

Every ride was a walk-on (economy is showing here also). But they still took a long time to load. Heck on Montezuma's revenge we didn't even have an employee at the loading area! Park was clean, the employees were friendly, (but not knowledgable about the where about of things....bathrooms, smoking areas ((one just said smoke anywhere))etc.).

We were tempted to buy Annual Passes (but decided once a year will probably be enough), since they are so cheap. $90.00 for adult and $60.00 for a kid, can't beat that. But where the entrance is cheap they made up in food costs...OMG! $30.00 for two of us for lunch at Panda Express!

Snowflake 07-03-2008 12:40 PM

Thanks again to LoT, I'm no longer in a cranky mood.

No, that settled down.

There are zombies out there... And they are emitting strong anti-hedons.

Morrigoon 07-03-2008 04:45 PM

Oh dear... are they dressed in Gold lame and having elbow sex with their hideous sisters too?

Not Afraid 07-03-2008 04:54 PM

Surely bottle fed kittens will end up being sweet and find good homes.....right?

Morrigoon 07-03-2008 05:06 PM

As long as you don't name them "Emmy" ;) Right Dphile?

j/k... I would think bottle fed would be wonderful companions

Disneyphile 07-03-2008 05:17 PM

Emmy was once sweet and precious. I was there the day her little eyes opened. Little did I know that those eyes opened upon a world that she intended to overthrow and dominate behind a facade of cuteness.

Don't let anyone be fooled by these two cute and precious rescues. The furry little demons are probably hoping for a hostile takeover someday. ;)

In the meantime, someone should adopt them though. :D

Oh, and does anyone need a dark brown granite texture? I just created one of those too.

Alex 07-03-2008 05:25 PM

Pixel was bottle fed (found abandoned in a gas station parking lot before she'd been weened).

She's a perfectly nice cat. Just not very touchy or the other behaviors that are viewed as affection in cats (she likes being around us, just not generally touching us).

Not Afraid 07-03-2008 05:58 PM

I think it is more of a "girl thing" with cats. I find more often than not that girl kitties are a bit more stand-offish. Of course, the "breed" has something to do with it as well. At the moment, the Tortie is the friendliest and whines less than the black boy. However, in my experience, Torties can be a bit of a bitch (as can Calicos) - again, they are always girls. I think the only reason Calliope isn't quite the queen bitch (yet) is that she's a "wild" breed mix and those tend to be more friendly and a lot more curious. Or, maybe it's just that Calliope is a brat.

Anyways, the kittens are about 4 weeks old. They will probably live with us for a few weeks until they are ready to go to new homes. I'm sure someone will take them if I put the word out.

Prudence 07-03-2008 07:00 PM

Every time I put on a first coat of paint I have that panic that zomg! It's going to be hideous! Why did I do this?! But then the second coat makes everything better.

wolfy999 07-03-2008 07:53 PM

Emmy is an Angel......hehe!

Mousey Girl 07-03-2008 11:18 PM

Bleh. I am tired of the hotness. When will summer be over??

I just got done cleaning the rodent condo. The babies were not happy when I stuffed them in the little travel cage, but I can't trust them to be good without supervision. 2 of the 3 older ones promptly went to my side of the couch and fell asleep in a sheet. The other kept checking to see what I was doing. Everyone is currently raiding the food dishes and playing around.

The 3 babies are doing really well...for the most part. Blinkie has got to be the most hyper rat I have ever had. It is only a matter of time before she decides to become our new floor rat. She is already jumping all over the place and climbs everything she can find (especially me).

I came home from work today to see 3 noses sticking up out of the hammock. Closer inspection revealed 3 more noses. That was the first time I have seen all 6 curled up together.

After seeing the kitty pics NA posted, I had to look at the condo to remind myself why I don't have cats.

I'm picking up a thread from elsewhere here because I do not want to derail that thread, nor do I want to start a new thread.

I posted this in the "American Story" thread about my Great Aunt.

I'm dumbstruck.

10 minutes after I posted this, my mother called. My Aunt Raie, of whom I just wrote above, died sometime last night or this morning.

At 76, she moved to Redmond Washington. In short time, she became friends with the mayor and an influential and well respected member of her community. She lived her life believing that "only boring people get bored" and never once chose to sit back and do nothing.

And I made no joke when I said she'd be happy to tell you about it. While her body finally made her last couple of years physically problematic, she never lost an ounce of her wits. Or her desire to share it with you.

She will be missed. I'll have a cup of proper tea tonight for you. I just wish I could read the leaves.

Deebs 07-05-2008 04:46 PM

GD, my sympathy.

Your aunt sounds like a pretty swanky lady. I'm sorry she's gone and would have loved to hear some of her stories. What a fabulous long life she had.

Enjoy that tea.

Morrigoon 07-05-2008 11:13 PM

Sorry to hear that, GD, but your bringing her up before knowing she'd passed just goes to show how significant a life she did lead.

RStar 07-05-2008 11:42 PM

GD, your aunt sounds like quite a lady. I hope she is remembered as much as she will be missed.

And yes, do treasure those storries.

I remember pushing my grandad around in a wheelchair at DL back in the 1970's just a few years before he passed away. He was born in 1889, and was telling me about the first time he saw a "Horseless Carrige". He and a friend had stopped for the night at a stable at the side of the road. They tended to their horses and laid down on the hay and went to sleep. They hadn't noticed that two stalls over a car had parked for the night (old habbits die hard, I suppose;) ). Well early in the morning they awoke to this loud noise that startled them and the horses. They jumped up to see this catraption pulling away down the road.

Remember the stories- and pass them on.

Yesterday, we worked on getting Jack the beagle more used to riding in the car. We drove around the countryside, past roads with names like Beaver Dam and Goose Creek, past a paper mill that is about to close and wipe out a little town, past a flock of sandhill cranes in a cranberry bog.

Soon, Jack relaxed and began to enjoy himself. We stopped several times for him to stretch his legs and - most importantly for a beagle - sniff around. On the homestretch, the white noise of a car in motion lulled him to sleep.

Yes, Jack the beagle is my baby.

For those of you who are familiar with Micechat (or once were)....Dustysage asked Fishbulb to marry him....his answer was "of course".

Note: Disneyland was not crowded today at all.

That is a really cute Beagle! :) Thanks for posting a pic of your doggy.

Today was productive. Thirteen miles on the mountain bike, a good lunch, washed the car, and vacuumed it all out. Got a couple loads of laundry done too.

Now on to the rest of the "to-do" list.

Yup, mine can copy, print, fax, and do the tango if I press the right button. It's amazing what theses things can do nowadays!

Yay! Finally some possibly good news for a change! :)

My friend William in San Antonio just spent a week down in Florida with his family. After a visit with his grandparents, he spent a few days with the rest of his family who were staying at the Shades of Green at Walt Disney World. William's father is a member of the Disney Vacaton Club and has more than enough points for himself and it is possible that at some point he may allow William and I to use some!

So at this time (so I don't jinx it) I'll say it is possible that I may get to go to Disney World next year. Who knows if it will end up happening what with me and my bad luck with these kind of things lately. LOL

Can't sleep. Avatars will eat me.

A quiet weekend, built some bookcases, played with the kitty, heard the fireworks through the fog.

Thanks to an awesome sale at Fresh & Easy, we now have a freezer FULL of meat.

Up until July 8th, they have fresh "grill packs" on sale for just a mere $4.99. They include: 8 pieces of seasoned chicken, 4 hamburgers, and 4 mild sausages. Everything is very fresh, and the chicken is super tasty.

We bought 11 packs, and had two $5-off coupons. We took everything out of the trays and consolidated it into freezer bags. So, 44 burgers, 44 sausages, and 88 pieces of chicken cost us only $45.

We'll be eating quite well for a good month or two! :D

It was well worth the savings for the hour it took me to bag it all up.

BDBopper 07-07-2008 10:48 AM

Wow...what a deal! Congrats on the savings for some great meat! :)

I don't think I could shop for groceries at a place that sounds like a feminine hygene product.

Morrigoon 07-07-2008 11:42 AM

We just grilled up the chicken from our grill pack last night (yeah, we only got one). Twas tasty :) However, since it was all legs & thighs, Mr. Picky ate the burgers instead :/

Morrigoon 07-07-2008 12:50 PM

I don't normally go out of my way to compliment tampon commercials, but I just saw a really funny one. These women are getting off the plane in Hawaii all excited, and then this chick in a green skirt suit shows up to greet one of them. "Hello Mother Nature"... and Mother Nature responds "Here's your monthly gift!" And the chick is all "Gee... thanks."

And for the rest of the ad, the red gift box represents that thing which we would rather not have represented literally on daytime (or any) tv.

Wow, to write it out it doesn't sound cute at all... but it was.

Oh yeah, then at the end they're all laying out on the beach and Mother Nature creeps by and is about to give the "present" to another one of the girls, decides not to bother, looks around and goes, "Ooh! Newlyweds!" and runs off.

BDBopper 07-07-2008 12:56 PM

That commercial sounds so funny...yet so wrong. I definitely do not enjoy seeing commercisl for tampons, male enhancement products, bras, and most prescription drugs. There are some things I just don't want to hear about while watching TV.

Disneyphile 07-07-2008 01:06 PM

Today's lunch is interesting. I raided the veggie drawer and washed up some green onions, tomatoes, green chilies and an avocado. I cut them nicely, placed them all next to each other on a plate and grabbed a fork.

It just now occurred to me that I'm eating un-mixed guacamole.

I like cutting up hard veggies (bell peppers, green onion, tomato, squashes, whatever) and tossing it in a bowl with some balsamic vinegar and Italian dressing.

Wow! Sooooo about 305 pages ago I experienced a couple of major losses, right after some minor ones, and I poofed. I was going to put up a joke new thread about how Second Life ate my First Life (thanks JWB) but it seemed too theatrical. Actually, what happened is SL was introduced to me at a time I needed it, and, beyond turning out to be therapeutic, it is my new Favorite Thing. I rarely go to my old fora or social networking sites because they are just so much paler compared to my 3-D networking world. FaceSpace-sites...meh: they require coddling. Twitter? No. I sent my son a text message once and got OMG U txtd me MOM. Is that the level of communication I want with my nearest and dearest? No.

I like the 3-D virtual world where I'm now a builder, script-fu mistress, animator, sim-owner AND a really good friend to people all over this planet. Second Life rocks. And a barometer of sorts is that my kid is all over me to get him on the adult grid. It is not going to happen, but I guess I've got the cool points in the bank again.

Oh but the point of this post was to say where I'd been, and why I'd been gone. But I really didn't leave you lovely people -- I just got busy in a fantastic way in a place right next door on the internet...a place of limitless possibilities where you really can create your own world. Okay, yeah, I guess I went crazy. :)

As for good info, try this.

I have to say that I've had more dog diagnosed with Cushings and NOT have it. Diabetes is often mistake for Cushings, has Rex been tested for diabetes? I'm not sure why vets seem to jump to the Cushings diagnosis right away, but it's not uncommon.

As for treatment, it al depending on what type of Cushings it is. It is treatable and, depending on the age if Rex, it would be a good idea to try and treat him. Once the symptoms of Cushing are under control, the dog can live a very happy life. Its certainly not a horrible, grim diagnosis. The goal would be to make sure Rex is a comfortable as possible and treatment will do that.

Gemini Cricket 07-08-2008 08:59 AM

lizziebith 07-08-2008 01:33 PM

I have virtual land I could donate for the LoT commune build. Just sayin'! And yes, it's an addictive place...

Anyone inworld wanting to hang out: I'm Bith Wierwight there. I tried to get a name close to my real one heheh.

I built a virtual gallery for my hubby -- a "Treehouse of Terror" -- (well it's almost done) and one for myself (Star Wars themed of course). I'm working on my Space Sim right now, and it should be open in August.

Disneyphile 07-08-2008 02:25 PM

Well, I went to check it out, and as soon as I entered a public area, a guy from Amsterdam started chatting to me. Then, he started telling me about Jeebus and finally said he's a JW.

Dude! It's a virtual world, not the real one. Good grief, can't a Pagan chick get a break now and then?

Leave it to me to check out a multi-player thing and get witnessed to within minutes.

lizziebith 07-08-2008 02:32 PM

LOL -- there are many Pagan areas too. But you haven't really [second-] lived until you encounter the idiot wearing a prominent, badly-sculpted, rampant willie trying to make the cyber-secksies with you when you're wearing a dinosaur avatar. Hilarity.

Also, a lot of the items' backsides looked like jockstraps, which was also weird.

I think my favorite items were the Bas Des Corps 'Souffle' (the second item viewable in the Gallery), and the Decoupe

For the past 25 years I have used a very beautiful stocking for Christmas that was made and stitched by a Great Aunt. Its very cute. It shows me as a young boy sitting in ftont of a roaring fireplace waiting for Santa. There are three stockings hung (for both my parents and me), a plate of cookies and a cat is at my side. the stocking is very special to me and is starting to show wear. Thus last Christmas I decided to retire so it does not get completely damaged due to use. So I have been on the lookout for a new stocking to use this Christmas and I have just found it!

I don't think there is a way to get my name on it but there will be no doubt who owns the stocking because it will be uniquely mine. What do you think?

I just bought a freaking adorable top at Kohl's. Technically, it's too small for me, but because it's a wrap top, it's workable. And seriously, it's so freaking awesome that it's worth it! Just saying.

I disagree. Lively is nothing more than a series of 3D chat rooms. Unlike SL, you can't create content or own land, and there is no economy.

lizziebith 07-09-2008 01:08 PM

JWB -- speaking of the SL economy/content creation, you should post pics of your swanky shop in the SL thread! :D

Moonliner 07-09-2008 01:29 PM

Am I the only one that shies away from any type of live chat?

I like the message board format. It gives one time to reflect upon the prose of others, craft a delicate response, step out for a dump, wait for a reply, carefully read responses to your response, do a little actual work, research the depths of the Internet to support your assertion that the initial response was clearly flawed, get drunk, and post a total drunken rage.

The pace of it all makes me happy. Live chats always seem to end up as:

- Hey
- Hey
- What's new?
- Nothing, you?
- Same.
.
.
.

Eh, spend enough time IMing and that's what you end up doing with it anyway.

I think you have hit the nail on the head with that idea. If I am going to do a live chat...it is almost always on Skype where I think it is easier to communicate.

I heard from one of the other temp agencies on Wednesday. She told me she won't be calling me every time she sends out my resume, since they already know my capabilities and preferences. So far they had sent it out 3 times, but I have yet to hear anything. I hate the hurry up and wait game.

Hell week X 2

I'm learning the joys of repertory theatre. This week has been spent teching both shows. Long nights, grumpy actors, techies and artistic staff.

"Pippin" opens on Saturday, "Annie Warbucks" on Sunday. We have "Pippin" rehearsal tonight, "Annie Warbucks" rehearsals Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Monday morning I'm back at work at the zoo. After that it's four day weeks at the zoo, plus eight shows a week through August 10. Monday and Tuesday evenings and Friday daytime will be my only down time.

I haven't seen the gym for a month or so...

Soooooooo wrong.

That reminds me of the story of How the Angel Got On Top of the Christmas Tree:

One Christmas Eve, long, long ago, Santa was having a difficult night. Half the elves were down with the flu. One of the reindeer had a sore hoof, and refused to be harnessed. The machine that makes the doll heads was broken, and they were out of red paint for the wagons. He and Mrs Claus had a huge argument, and she had gone home to her mother's. To top it all off, an angel was there to deliver the Christmas tree and kept asking him where he wanted it set up.

finally Santa had had enough, and in a fit of temper. he told the angel exactly where she could put the Christmas tree.

And that, boys and girls, is why there is an angel on top of the Christmas tree!

We had Macaroni Grill tonight :) Yay gift cards!

They have this meal thingy setup where you get the pasta, plus salad and a 1/2 size dessert for $11.99. What I don't get is that the pasta alone is ALSO $11.99 - and honestly... I don't think the portion of pasta was much smaller, if at all. So we're all totally stuffed and have leftovers :)

Worked out to about $16/pp. If you account for the leftovers, the per-meal on that is pretty cheap. :)

Gn2Dlnd 07-12-2008 01:47 PM

I saw The Drowsy Chaperone at the Ahmanson last night. Total theatre geek heaven! If you can get there, go! Super extra bonus: At my market earlier that day, I was chatting with a new customer and mentioned I was coming back downtown later to see The Drowsy Chaperone. She says, "I'm in it!" I say, assuming that she's one of the millions of chorus people I'm sure are in the show, "What are you playing, so I can watch for you?" She says,"The chaperon." We have a great chat about theatre, selling cheese for a living, and being nominated for a Tony. So, I ask if we can meet her backstage after the show, and get a tour.

Ladies and gentlemen, last night I appeared on the stage of the Ahmanson Theatre.

Of course, it was after the show, and the audience had gone home, but, the set was magnificent and I was in heaven. Nancy Opel is a swell actor and the chaperon is a boozy grand diva of a character. All I can say is that it's amazing how my psyche can house envy, admiration, and sheer joy in such massive and equal amounts.

I loved that the guy sitting next to me, with his girlfriend, was geeking out as hard as I was. I'm betting that she's now assembling the clues she's going to need for the eventual "talk" they're going to have.

I've decided on a strategy in my own personal campaign against Prop 8:

1. Remind everyone who supports gay marriage to get out there and vote NO.

2. Try to convince those on the fence to see the reasons why it's the right thing to do

and the other part of my strategy:

3. Rather than antagonize those who will never be convinced to support gay marriage, provide them with enough arguments against voting yes and then politely asking them to abstain.

All this talk about kilts remins me of this gem of a song! ;)

Spoiler:
A Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair
And one could tell by how he walked he'd drunk more than his share
He staggered on until he could no longer keep his feet
Then stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street.

chorus:
Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
He stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street.

Later on two young and lovely girls just happened by,
And one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
You see yon sleeping Scotsman who is young and handsome built
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath their kilt.

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath their kilt.

They crept up to the sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
Then lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
And there behold for them to view beneath his Scottish skirt
Was nothing but what God had graced him with upon his birth

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
There was nothing there but what God gave upon his birth

They marveled for a moment then one said we'd best be gone
But let's leave a present for our friend before we move along
They took a blue silk ribbon and they tied it in a bow
Around the bonnie spar that the Scot's lifted kilt did show

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
Around the bonnie spar that the Scot's lifted kilt did show

The Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled toward a tree
Behind a bush he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees
Then in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes
He said, "Lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first
prize!"

Ring ding diddle diddle i de o
Ring di diddle i o
"Lad I don't know where you've been but I see you won first prize!"

But, I can say that I'll have another celeb for my demo reel. :D

3894 07-14-2008 09:25 AM

Since there is likely 0% chance Disneyphile would tell me who that celebrity was, I'll imagine it was ... um ... how about ... oh, I have no idea, dammit. :(

How's this for a good idea? The city of Milwaukee has hired border collies to chase away seagulls and their e-coli poop.

DreadPirateRoberts 07-14-2008 09:27 AM

Let's hope the collie droppings don't have E. coli

I'd guess he's having problems locating a large image of a segway being ridden by a bikini clad hottie. The man has his standards after all.

OMG, the silent film fest was F-U-N this year. Met so many fun people, saw some really terrific movies (and, yes, the Carl Dreyer was, as I expected, beautifully photographed and dull, dull, dull, slow, slow, slow). A great weekend and I am bone tired!

Life will turn out the way it's supposed to; or at least that's what I try and tell myself when I feel all helpless and, as you put it, jello-like.

I do know there are a lot of great opportunities stemming from the military - it's all in what choices are made along the way. For my boyfriend, it's given him a rewarding, well-paying career as a contractor for the Air Force.

Make sure, if he does decide to join up, to get some skills out of it. It PAYS. :)

I am hoping he will stop and get his GED first. *sigh* what a day!

MouseWife 07-14-2008 11:47 AM

I thought they required at least that? I have a nephew who is trying to get into the Army right now. He's had some issues in the past and is having to jump through hoops. For him, at least we hope, it will be a positive change.

I know the worry and wondering is very stressful, I hope you have answers soon to whatever he works out.

I don't think it is required- they can issue a waiver. However, it is better to have it than not.

So I hope he stops long enough to do that.

Thanks-this is all new for me. I was married to the Army once- but this is my kid.

blueerica 07-14-2008 11:59 AM

Yes, let's just hope they have him get his GED at least!

Alex 07-14-2008 12:12 PM

Has he said what his motivations are for wanting to join the military?

Unless things have changed recently, the Marine Corps has a cap of no more than 5% of new recruits in a year being high school drop outs (this includes both no degree and GED).

Since the number of applications in this category generally exceed your physical fitness and ASVAB scores generally need to be much higher than average. It'll also limit his education and occupational choices.

If he does have a GED, then taking 15 college credits will get him bumped into the same category as regular high school graduates.

If he really wants to be a Marine (and isn't just viewing it as an immediate escape route) the best path really is to complete high school.

Alex 07-14-2008 12:18 PM

Oh, and at least as of 2 months ago the USMC was blowing through its 2008 recruitment goals so I don't know that they'll be bending over backwards to get every single person through the door.

Morrigoon 07-14-2008 12:26 PM

Nephy, if he's excited about a career in the military, maybe he can get excited about ROTC? They'll help him cover college AND he'll get to start in the military as an officer.... later.

Which he will not do. He wishes he had- but he won't. Fact is- it's the GED or nothing and he plans to get the GED- but the chances of him sticking around to take college classes first- also nil.

I really do appreciate the info-

Ah- well, we shall see what the meeting today yields. I want him to get the GED first- will slow him down enough to make a better thought out choice.

ROTC

According to the wikipedia article:
Quote:

ROTC produces officers in all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces except the U.S. Coast Guard: 56 percent of U.S. Army, 11 percent of the U.S. Marine Corps, 20 percent of the U.S. Navy, and 41 percent of the U.S. Air Force, for a combined 39 percent of all active duty officers in the Department of Defense.
And this gem:

Quote:

With the exception of the U.S. Coast Guard, each of the U.S. Armed Forces offer competitive, merit-based scholarships to ROTC students, often covering full tuition for college.
Mind you, successful service in the military will also result in money for college, if he chose to go after the fact.

I also agree with what you said about him thriving in heavily structured environments. And in that respect, he could probably do very well for himself there.

Here's probably a more specific one, since he's thinking of joining the Marines.

The Old People are worried about me. She thinks I am getting ready to hit bottom again. I probably am, but she is refusing to let me. They just took me out to lunch. I now have enough food to last for most of the week. She is also afraid that, since I don't have Boy this week, I won't eat. It is funny, I used to eat through my mood swings, now I seem to have swung in the opposite direction.

alphabassettgrrl 07-14-2008 05:02 PM

I bought a pot of catnip today, watered it, and put it on the counter to soak for a bit before I plant it.

I see kitty found it. :)

I finally got 100% completion of Lego Indiana Jones today (there was ONE stinkin' part that had me almost screaming at the game - today I zipped through it to pick up the final piece)

ozron 07-14-2008 11:14 PM

After a very tense tech week, both my shows opened this last weekend. "Pippin" ran smoothly (for the most part) to about half a house of enthusiastic theatre people (we offered half price tickets to the theatre community to get butts in the seats!) on Saturday. The show went great! The Oregonian was there and ran a good review in today's paper.

"Annie Warbucks" opened Sunday night. While the performance side was ready, the tech side was not. We went on with partial sets and unfinished light cues. Nevertheless, the audience (mostly friends and family) enjoyed it. It will be fully up when we return on Friday.

I have some pictures I'll post soon.

There is nothing better than taking home grown toms and bake them in the oven to reduce for sauce. You add onions, bell peppers, and basil.

Update-

He came home last night with a Marine key lanyard and a folder with three shiny papers with pictures of Marines with small snippets of info. Nothing more-just shiny pretty things.

Told me he had double disqualified himself-

*lack of a diploma

*suicide attempt (he was 13)

But that the recruiter told him she wanted to work with him.

Suggested getting a diploma- not by going back to school but you pay a fee- take some tests and get a diploma- not a GED.

...and told him to keep the suicide attempt on the downlow- which I find absurd. You can't hide the scars and you can't lie about it at a physical- so someone is going to know.

She left him a message asking him to call her this morning- so will know soon if she still wants to work with him or not.

He may need to more seriously consider the other branches.

He may very well pass the recruiting office's "standards" but when he gets to MEPS for the pre-enlistment physical, testing and interview they'll disqualify him again.

There's a program here called the California Conservation Corps that is a live-in type program that does firefighting and other environmental work. It's pretty structured. I don't think it's restricted to CA residents and there may be something similar in your area.

AmeriCorps is a similar program. We see them up in the San Bernardino mountains doing projects all the time.

MouseWife 07-15-2008 08:55 AM

Nephythys~I think my daughter also took that test. She had been through other programs, home studies and I forget what the one is that is on campus but seperate.....But, she took that test and received a diploma of sorts, not a GED. Her home studies teacher recommended that, you pay {at the time} $50 and go to {she did} a local college and take the test.

My nephew who is trying to join the service, he has been trying for a long time. It is frustrating because he is putting all of his hopes in that he will be in the service. That's it. Waiting. He needs to move on but I think they keep telling him it will happen.

I also don't know if they will ever overlook his past. A lot of people have had problems, but, as you say, it is hard to hide. They may overlook it, who knows.

I like those programs mentioned, the Corps. They sound like real character building programs.

Again, I wish you luck. But, what I have found, sometimes even when they find their 'niche' they fall out of it and have to either re-find it or find another one. So, take it easy and breathe. ;0)

Highly possible. You have to have a clean mental health history. With his legal troubles it may just be to much.

I had a hell of a time getting around the Navy's requirements because I took ADD meds as a kid. In the end it was my knees that disqualified me from enlisting (went all the way through to the pre-enlistment physical at MEPS).

As much as he wants to join, as much as the recruiter may "work with him" the recruiter doesn't get the final say.

Having other options at hand may help soften the blow of "now what am I going to do with my life".

alphabassettgrrl 07-15-2008 10:08 AM

Kitty generally doesn't destroy the catnip, just nibbles. She's a good kitty.

The house is quiet today. My hound is at the vet for a surgery today and the cat is off somewhere. I prefer the general chaos that ensues when we have pets here.

Legal troubles? He has a closed juvenile record- which has to be disclosed but he has no legal issues currently.

So much for that.

"I lost the number" "I deleted the message" "I was double disqualified"

"I don't want to anymore"

Boom- another door shut by D- who will do nothing hard and sees nothing through.

I am pretty upset now- not because of the military. If he does not want to- fine. I am upset because he is going nowhere and while he is going nowhere he thinks he can use me and my home and my family.

I am sick of it and want him to get out and start living his life.

Alex 07-15-2008 11:17 AM

Well at least he was disqualified up front. If that is how hardship is handled he'd never have survived boot camp anyway.

BarTopDancer 07-15-2008 11:18 AM

I'm sorry. He must feel pretty defeated. It is a bummer being turned down by the military when it's your dream. I wanted to fly fighter jets. Had my plan laid out, but was disqualified from enlisting because of my knees (I wouldn't have been able to fly anyways since my vision wasn't 20/20 uncorrected).

Can you guide him to AmeriCorps or something like the CCC I linked above? Maybe even firefighting school or police work? He would probably thrive in any structured environment.

By which I mean she got a Nordstrom pre-sale appointment for me, bought me a lot of things I can later decide whether to keep (and pay her back for) or return, and then launched into a tirade about how my bras are all horribly ugly and ta-da! here is the bra-fitting woman and when she gets back I'd best have picked out some pretty bras.

It was an ... odd ... experience.

Snowflake 07-15-2008 02:02 PM

Yes, but wearing a properly fitted foundation garment can be heavenly (insert obligatory quote from The Women, here).

It's amazing the difference.

MouseWife 07-15-2008 02:08 PM

Yeah, I think that would be pretty cool to be fitted. It is just a strange experience, I am sure. I think all of the mom business of making one try on clothes in the aisle and making loud comments about things makes that process a bit like 'Oh, that's fine...I'll just take that....' and be done with it.
:(

{so many sad cheeses!}

Soooooo.......

I am reading up on the Yahoo! page about diet myths, tips, etc.

All it did was make me hungry!!!

alphabassettgrrl 07-15-2008 02:20 PM

Dieting makes you fat. Now, and when you go off the diet, and then again later in life. Eat healthy, work out, or do anything physical, and call it a day.

If it is tight and makes your bosoms squeeze together into a wonderfully blossoming cleavage, than it is a good fit!

So sez I

MouseWife 07-15-2008 02:41 PM

LOL I think I'll go with alphabassettgrrls' tip, GC.

I am trying to be balanced. Bike rides, walks, working out. Yesterday, our bike ride was cancelled due to the need to take our daughter to the doctor. I felt wired all day, not having done a thing. So, at night, I went out to the garage, lifted weights and punched the heck out of my bag.

So, I'll stick with the working out and skip the illnesses....knock on wood.

There was a three-yaer period where I got the stomach flu every year on my birthday (). That is also a great weight-loss mechanism.

Personally, I am bulimic. I just keep forgetting to purge.

alphabassettgrrl 07-15-2008 02:57 PM

MW- that's great! Punching a bag is not only great exercise, but it's cathartic! I'm finding these days that junk food doesn't even taste good. Most of the time, anyway. I still need to taper down how *much* I eat, but one step at a time, right?

I hope your daughter is ok.

Oh, there are all kinds of variables that haven't been discussed. For me though, mesh usually doesn't carry much of a positive visual impact.

And in case you are wondering, the only comfort I am truly interested in (on this topic) is my visual comfort. Whether the wearer is comfortable is of only minimal importance.

Bodices and bustiers are also important.

You are right. Cathartic is the word!! Can't go around punching people but I can beat up the bag to a pulp!! ;)

And, yes, I don't like junk food, much. It really doesn't taste very good. But, once in a while it does. It is the quantity of the good food I do need to taper down, as well. My husband is a wonderful cook. Dah!!!

Oh, she turned out to be okay. Having serious headaches but the doc said they were just that. I told her to try things on her own to relieve them, like perhaps it could be eye strain, stress, and, taking some Excedrin as soon as she feels she is on her way to one of those horrible headaches.

Does anyone here wear extended contacts? She is and sometimes wears them longer than the two weeks. I say that is part of the culprit. Comments on that?

I used to wear mine for 3-4 weeks back in the early days of contacts for me (I was a teenager). I caused irreparable damage to my eyes - I have severe vein build-up around my corneas. Luckily, I was able to prevent further damage by removing them nightly, but was just barely under the allowable limit for my Lasik procedure.

However, the veins around my corneas can worsen with age and may cause me to go blind if my eyes can't get oxygen on their own.

Wearing contacts for extended periods on a regular basis is BAD. Period.

Intended laziness (aka "inexcusable stupidity") nearly cost me my eyesight.

Kevy Baby 07-15-2008 05:54 PM

I regularly wear my Acuvue II lenses for 2-3 months without removing them. I have been doing this for years. Every time my eye doc examines the lenses, he always asks how long this particular pair has been in and I will tell him two weeks (which is still twice as long as they should be worn) and he always comments that they are looking good for two weeks. I then tell him the truth and he tries to chastise me, but his words are empty with the condition my eyes are in.

YMMV

I've tried the extended wear a couple of times. I can't wear them even a single night. I use the daily disposable. Wear them once toss them out. No cleaning, no problems in years and years of use. The only thing I don't like is that I can't fall asleep watching TV with them in. I always carry a few extra pairs so there is no worry if I lose one at the pool or some such.

One thing you can look into, an eye specialist I saw suggest I get shunts. Most people who can't wear extended wear have dry eyes. The shunts are essentially little straws inserted into your tear ducts to open them up.

Pimm's

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search
"Pimm's Cup" redirects here. For the cocktail, see Pimm's Cup (cocktail).

A vintage Pimm's Bottle

Pimm's is a brand of alcoholic beverages now owned by Diageo. Its most popular product is Pimm's No. 1 Cup, a gin-based beverage that can be served both on ice or in cocktails. The recipe of Pimm's No. 1 Cup is secret; it has a dark tea colour with a reddish tint, and tastes subtly of spice and citrus fruit.
Pimm's is most common in Britain, particularly Southern England. It is one of the two staple drinks at Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta and the Glyndebourne opera festival, the other being champagne. As a result Pimm's has the reputation of being a drink for the upper class.
Pimm's No. 1 Cup is the essential ingredient in the Pimm's Cup, which mixes one part Pimm's No.1 with three parts lemonade or lemon soda (sometimes ginger ale or Indian tonic water), ice cubes, borage leaves (nowadays a wedge of cucumber is usually substituted for this ingredient), mint leaves and slices of lemon, orange and strawberry.

My hound is back home. She has long incisions and her foot is wrapped and they pulled two teeth, but my baby is back home.

lashbear 07-15-2008 09:03 PM

Of course, Wikipedia has it wrong again. The correct name for the beverage is "Pimm's No 1 Cup" (I don't think they made any other numbers, though.)

Since the dawn of time, our family has always drunk this diluted in lemonade (Sprite to the USA) with a strip of cucumber twisted into the drink.

Moonliner~ Oooo, shunts? So, I take it you haven't had them done? I think my older son would then likely have that problem as he has dry eyes. LOL Funny the things moms know but they hate to hear....

alphabassettgrrl~Glad your hound is home! So, esplain' it Lucy, she has an incision on her foot and two teeth were pulled....the connection is??? Or is there one? I hope she rests well. I read what you said earlier about the house not being the same without your pets. Our cat really makes our home cozy. She can be one crazy little gal at times {who knows what she is chasing!!} but she is loved here. So, I understand what you meant.

Ooo, reading more about the ingredients of that Pimms...yummy! Sounds like a Capt Jack drink to me...a bit rum tasting?

Actually:

Quote:

There are five other Pimm's products besides No.1. The essential difference among them is the base alcohol used to produce them:
  • Pimm's No. 1 Cup is based on gin. It is 25% alcohol by volume.
  • Pimm's No. 2 Cup was based on whisky. Currently phased out.
  • Pimm's No. 3 Cup is based on brandy. Phased out, but a version infused with spices and orange peel marketed as Pimm's Winter Cup is now seasonally available.
  • Pimm's No. 4 Cup was based on rum. Currently phased out.
  • Pimm's No. 5 Cup was based on rye. Currently phased out.
  • Pimm's No. 6 Cup is based on vodka. It is still produced, but in small quantities.
Pimm's No. 1 can also be purchased as a pre-mixed fortified lemonade (Pimm's & Lemonade) in 250 mL cans or 1-litre bottles.

3.5 weeks left of summer school!

Just got the OK that I can take the health class I wanted at GWC. Need to buy my books, pass math and I'll only have 1 semester to go!

alphabassettgrrl 07-15-2008 09:36 PM

Pimms, eh? SOunds interesting! I like the sound of the whiskey one (never could get the hang of gin).

My hound had a lot of stuff done today. She went in for dental work, and to take off a lump in her mammary gland (over an inch). The incisions for the lump removal are long and football-shaped to keep her skin flat when it heals. During the dental work, they found two loose teeth, so they pulled those. She had two other lumps that the doc took off, one on her hip, and one between her toes.

My little Frankendog. At least she could eat dinner. She's doing pretty well, all things considered. And we found a collar that I think she'll tolerate reasonably well. Instead of a lampshade collar (which don't work at all on basset hounds), we found an inflatable one that looks like a little inner tube. She can eat, drink, lay down and all, just not get at her stitches.

Dan Uggla can go Ugg himself.

I'm glad the game went that long, I was rooting for an injury, teach everyone a lesson for the whole "now it counts" stupidity.

But at least Russel Martin played well, and Brandon Webb of the D-Backs was forced to pitch which should throw a monkey wrench in Arizona's rotation so that's good news.

Gemini Cricket 07-16-2008 08:21 AM

Dan Uggla. Wow. That guy had a dark cloud of bad luck over his head the whole game.

There were a couple of questionable calls during the game. I think they should use instant replay for funky calls. One was the guy stealing second. He looked safe to me...

I'm burned out, but that's because I'm burned out on school.

I don't know, I don't see anything wrong with instant replay. Some of these calls can be quite irritating. And the weird way that some announcers and some players are just okay with a wrong call is annoying. Last night, the announcer said, 'Oh yeah, he was out... Anyway, up next is...' I kept yelling at the TV saying, 'But the call was wrrrooong!' And, yes, I say it for non-Angels, non-Red Sox teams as well...

MouseWife 07-16-2008 08:38 AM

But that's baseball. Always has been. Wrong calls go both ways. And unless you're going to go the whole 9 yards and have instant replay for balls and strikes (or worse, a computer making all ball and strike calls) there's absolutely no point. Baseball is a judgment call game and always should be.

Strangler Lewis 07-16-2008 09:05 AM

There's talk of having reply just for home run calls, which would not be the worst thing given the funky design of some outfield fence/bleachers. However, before baseball commits to reply to "get it right" they should make sure that the infielders actually touch second base with the ball in their hands when they try to turn a double play.

I am in complete agreement with you on this one, GC! I draw the lines at balls and strikes but instant replay is something that is definitely needed in win/lose situations for close calls (and for home runs close to the foul pole.

See, but you can't draw the line at balls and strikes. There's no line to be drawn. Either there should be instant replay for everything or none at all.

Alex 07-16-2008 09:31 AM

I'd support instant replay for fair/foul home runs decisions since it is completely possible to reset or advance the game if replay overturns the call on the field. Also, most such reviews should be very quick.

But no farther and I personally wouldn't strongly advocate for even that. I'm fine with the human factors. Yes, there are well defined rules but we're already fuzzy in enforcement of several (how many 6-4-3/4-6-3 double plays never see anybody tag second; watch how quickly the back line of the batter's box disappears as the batters creep backwards out of it; and of course the strike zone)

BDBopper 07-16-2008 09:35 AM

I would rather my team lose a game on a correct call than win on a botched call. So there. :p

Kevy Baby 07-16-2008 09:38 AM

Have there really been that many blown home-run calls? I just don't see the need to introduce IR even for that. Partly because reviews wouldn't be quick. One of the bigger complaints about baseball is that it is already too slow of a pace - IR would just make it worse.

Besides, ANYTHING can have an effect on the game. While the reversal of a home run has a more immediate and obvious effect, just about any other call could impact the game as well.

There have been an abnormally high number of borderline home run calls (some botched, most not) this season, so IR has been a big topic of conversation among nitwits analysts.

I can't argue with that. I also can't argue the fact that I may be a Loser later this afternoon! :D

I think I'm getting old, or just mean. Or both.

For months, Ken and I have been waiting for our complex to reinstall the fences on either side of our patio, which would privately enclose it, like it is supposed to be.

Well, the kids who live here love to run up and down the whole length of the building, especially across our patio. And they are loud and have left trash behind, etc.

So, we placed our two benches sideways across our patio where the fences are supposed to go to hopefully prevent the running back and forth and keep them out of our area. We also placed our two very thorny rose bushes along that length of patio as well, to discourage them from just climbing over or jumping the benches.

So, does this mean we officially hate kids yet?

I just hate having to raise other people's children. When I was a kid, I was taught not to enter other people's yards and driveways when out playing, and it didn't "restrict my childhood" one bit. Are manners just not taught these days?

Alex 07-16-2008 09:47 AM

It came up as an issue again because earlier this year there was a week where there were three blown calls on whether a home run was fair or foul. And another where there was a question of fan interference.

It is one those things that generally arises whenever there's a statistical clumping and we saw one in May.

BarTopDancer 07-16-2008 09:53 AM

T - I think that is a reasonable thing to do. It's your area, you want it for your use.

You're also protecting yourself from liability if they happen to hurt themselves on "your side" and protecting your property that is on your patio.

I was unaware of the abnormality. While I could see where IR could help, I would still rather stay with no IR and work on the umpires.

Actually, they are opening themselves up TO liability by placing the benches and bushes. If the kids hurt themselves on their patio as the owners maintained it, the liability would be on the owners exclusively.

Here's an example of why I think replay would be bad on anything but the most resettable of decisions, replay for everything leads to trouble:

Scenario 1
Two outs. Batter hits a stinger to third. Third baseman makes a diving catch and makes a snag that is rules a clean catch. Third out. Batter never even makes it 20 feet down the baseline before stopping and heading to the dugout.

Replay shows the ball actually touched the ground before being caught. It was definitely a ball in play but there would have still been a chance of making the out at first anyway. Do you:

1. Award the runner first
2. Assume he'd have been out anyway
3. Continue the at bat (but with what count)

Scenario 2:
Runner on third. Batter swings at pitch and the ball goes straight back to the backstop. Umpire calls it a foul tip. Runner stays at third. Replay shows it was actually a clear miss by the batter and the pitch was actually a passed ball. If correctly called the runner on third probably would have scored. Do you:

1. Award the runner home place and score the run
2. Run the exact situation through a sabremetric database to calculate the historical odds of scoring on that play and then roll a die to determine the outcome.
3. Leave the runner on third (in which case, why have the replay)

Disneyphile 07-16-2008 10:05 AM

The benches are still on our patio though, well within the fence borders. If they don't wander onto our patio, they won't come in contact with 'em.

I'm just sick of my work being interrupted by the distraction.

I grew up mostly in southern California, and that is what I was taught as well. But we spent 3 years in suburban upstate New York when I was 9-11. There were no fences between yards there, and we kids played everywhere.

I don't see either situation as reviewable (even with Instant Replay)

Yes. Very much so. I really like the College Football review system where it is done from the booth and most times a coach doesn't need to challenge a call because an official will call for a review before it becomes necessary. In pro football The Coach has the ability to challenge the call on the field twice in a game. However if the call is not overturned his team loses a time-out. If a coach is succssful twice in a game he is awarded with an extra chance.

Someone else can get into the details (I am not sure which plays are "reviewable", but I do know that the team that requests the review is charged a time-out of the play is not reversed after review). But IMO, it doesn't work for the same reason I don't want it in baseball: it interrupts the flow of the game.

I was thinking that the NFL System would be better for Baseball but there is nothing that really could be taken away from a manager if a challenged call is not overturned in his team's favor.

Yes, it is used in football to decent effect.

But, football benefits from a couple of things. First, there is only one important thing that has to be determined for any given play: where should the ball be and did it get to where it is fairly? Therefore it is easy is generally simple to reset the game to where it was before a call was made. The catch was made with one foot out of bounds therefore the play didn't count so go back to where it was or yes it was a good catch so it stays where it is.

Baseball isn't so simple. On a hit to right field with a person on first. Sure, replay could tell you that the at bat should have continued because it was actually foul but turn it around (oops it was called foul but is fair) and what should happen? On a called fair ball maybe the guy on first only advances to second or maybe he saw an opportunity and would have tried stretching to third where he's thrown out in a close play. Or the batter would have slipped and fell coming out of the batter's box (it does happen every once in a while) and would have been thrown out at the plate.

Whereas in football replay is generally a determination of what ACTUALLY happened (since it is just focused on the ball). Widespread use of replay in baseball would too often require, when overturning a decision on the field, making guesses as to what PROBABLY would have happened.

But yeah, there are moments when it would be safe to use replay, I just don't feel there is so much horrible error, and what there is (unlike in the NBA) is pretty neutral, that it is needed.

At what point is an all star game a tie? Apparently there was one in the past. But if this was the longest all star game ever, what made that other one a tie...?

There can no longer be a tie.

In the past, the ASG was purely exhibition. Nothing was gained other than bragging rights by winning. Several years ago, a game got into the 11th inning. The coaches had used almost all of their bench players (the point of the game being to let the players show off, not to manage uber-strategically). So they agreed to just end it in a tie. Since it was a meaningless game, they could walk away whenever they felt like it.

Idiot fans got pissed off. They felt ripped off somehow that there wasn't a winner, even though what they saw was exactly what they paid to see, the best 50 or so baseball players having fun and showing off.

So the league decided to experiment and make the ASG "mean something". Namely, as mentioned earlier, it decides who gets home field advantage in the World Series. Whichever league wins, the team from that leage gets the advantage come October. So now that they HAVE to have a winner, the managers can't just say, "Ooops, we've used everyone on the bench, time to call it off."

I think it's beyond stupid. What that means is:

A) Fewer players will make it into the game. With the threat of an extended game, managers have to reserve a couple players on the bench just in case.

B) Risk of injury for an exhibition game. The longer it goes, the higher the risk.

C) Even without injury, longer playing time means MLB's best players are losing a day of rest. Normally they'd play a couple innings and go chill out. But instead you end up with Russel Martin playing 10 innings.

It's an exhibition game, it should be an exhibition, not a competition. It's bogus and the fans that complained about the one that ended in a tie are idiots.

mousepod 07-16-2008 11:59 AM

IIRC, the biggest complainers were the legal sports gamblers in Las Vegas

I don't know who they belong too, and they always run out of sight when I open the door. They know to run though, because I yelled at them shortly after we moved in because they were using our doorbell as a "base" for one of their games and would ring it constantly throughout the day. Ken thought I was mean for stopping their game, telling me that they were just "having fun" and needed a "base". I told him to see how much fun it is always running to the damn door while trying to work. ;) Asking them nicely to stop only added to their "fun", so I ended up having to put on my mean face and yell. They got that message and now fear me.

However, I notice that a neighbor further down our side has adopted the same idea already - this afternoon, they turned their potted vine and lattice sideways to block their section now too. :D

Hellen Mirren can wear that bikini any time she wants. OMG. Yeah.

I had a good day today. My friend and I took the bus to Santa Barbara today, bummed around all day, saw things we wanted to see, and took the train home. Lovely day marred only by her sore toes from wearing the wrong shoes. She felt bad about repeating "I could spend money on "XXX" if I knew I was getting the job".

Frankendog is doing reasonably well. I only saw her try to lick her stitches twice tonight.

I believe choice scenes from the honeymoon were in there as well.

Just the wedding and reception. :)

I've now moved on to other tapes of miscellaneous stuff. There are still 18 more to capture.

I'm sure you've got all the equipment you need, but on the off chance that this might help, have you seen today's woot?

Oh, I know. Could come in handy, but the problem is that it won't do time code, and that's essential for what I do. I've had my hopes up for a fire store for a LONG time now. The pro ones are around $1,400 though. So, it'll have to wait for now.

Just got to Loo-uh-vull, KY. It's a tad humid! The hotel gave us a gift upon check-in: a horse blanket! We're going to use it to mop up our perspiration I guess...

I hate it when the KY gets sticky.

Good thing you got that horse blanket.

Kentucky is so pretty, it almost makes up for the humidity. First off, the state is pretty much Beagle Central. Also, if you can stay at Harmony Hill, an old Shaker village, you will absolutely love it. Perfect location for a destination wedding, btw.

Was there a reason for the horse blanket (other than mopping up perspiration)? That just seems so random.

Home of the Kentucky Derby, dude. They have to do something with all that horsehair.

So the set for "Singin' in the Rain" came in on 5 semi-trucks. I see why. We hung huge heavy things on the flyrail. We put the rest of the heavy crap onto platforms. There's a rain deck to catch the rain. It's not light either, and the backdrop for it is a series of buildings, like a town. They're all 15 feet tall and don't break down.

I'm thinking I want to see the show just to see this stuff all do its thing. It's a three day load-in, and our first two days have been 10 hours long. Oh, and everything's warped and tweaked so nothing fits to fasten it together. It's been ... interesting. Yeah, that's a good word. :)

Here's hoping tomorrow is a short day so I can go to the cemetary screening.

So, about 20 or 30 pages back, I talked about having my first gig with my new band, The Naked Funk. A few people asked me to share clips if they became available. And I just found out tonight that there are some on youtube.

I should warn that they are not of the best quality. This is the house mix, which sounds a little out of whack, not to mention that we are certainly still rough around the edges. Still, I thought I would share for anyone interested.

Thanks. :)

Jessica will definitely be in my prayers.

And, I've been desperately longing to hear my mom's voice for months now, and there she was - her entire toast was caught on video, and I didn't even know it. I got to hear her say "I love you", and it's just too awesome to describe. I now feel like she's still with me and always will be.

It reminds me of why I love what I do - capture the moments of a lifetime forever. :)

Oh how awesome is that! I know how much you needed that. I am so glad you were blseed in this way. :)

So where have I been?

Well on thursday I was "hired" to bring in my DJ equipment and play some music at tghe private school for kids with special needs in town (my mom is the Secretary there). So on Wednesday night I had to drag out all of my stuff and get it all together, make sure I had all the stuff the kids liked, and got a good night's sleep (or at least tried to). I really had no idea what was going to happen because the nice teenagers who hired me never told me what I was going to be doing exactly and what my duties were. I would learn later that thye had my number and lost it.

So I woke up at 6 AM and did the final prep work and loaded it up in my mom's station wagon. At 8 AM it was off to the school. I met up with the very sweet Teenage volunteers who hired me. they are really girls after my own heart. they wanted to help raise money for the school to help pay the book fees for the students. So they set up wagon rides, a drink/snack stand, and karaoke to help raise the money. Parents sent their kids in with money and they piad the girls as everything transpired.

It was hot, humid, and sticky with temps in the 90's. Thank goodness I had the forsight to realize that whatever was going down would happen outdoors and brought a hat and plenty of sunscreen. That did not help my equipment though so I am glad for a pause in the action and i moved my stuff (sans speakers) inside a trailer. The kids had a blast and I did too (despite having to play the High School Musical 2 Soundtrakc ad nausium for three hours (that's what the girls wanted me to play so I did). The final talley ended up being around $125. The girls slipped me a few dollars but I later slipped them back in the bucket.

As for the rest of Thursday I took the evening fo R&R. It was fun but stressful and emotionally exhausting. Not only did I have the gig but I got called a few times by fellow DJ's on the Radio Station about drama that I didn't need to deal with (read I didn't want to hear about it...there has been too much crap and drama surrounding things there for the past month). In addition to that Charter finally came to install Cable and didn't have the right equipment. Ugh!

Yesterday I went to lunch with my Great Uncle and destressed. Thank goodness Charter came and made things right. We finally have Cable again after 11 days of nothing.

So that's what's been up with me. I missed you guys for the past three days (from Wednesday evening to now).

That makes me sad. No one invited me.

Nope, not begging.

Gn2Dlnd 07-19-2008 04:24 PM

Not atwitter over Twitter. Or LJ. Or any other way to OCDiddly document every moment of my life and the lives of those around me.

I have, however, come to appreciate the occasional txt msg as a quick check-in tool. i.e.: movie?, call, Im here r u?, etc.

Singin's going in the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. It's going to rain onstage which always makes me nervous.

I've learned that having BJ's at 3:30 (baked potato with cheese, chicken, and broccoli), a movie (Hellboy II), and then sushi at 8:30 is too much for one evening.

No time for biking today. Hopefully I can finish here and do some weights here at home. Feeling quite blobby. I ate too much.

wendybeth 07-20-2008 12:40 AM

Hey, BD- you're a great sport for playing that evil soundtrack so many times- your ears must be bleeding.

I haven't been 'Twittering', just working and having kind of a hectic week. Eric sanded and refinished one of the decks, and we've been painting the railings for the past several nights. (It's a very large deck). Tori has been a big help- she's easily done 1/2 of the painting so far, and she's doing a great job. I'll have to post a pic when we're finished- it really is looking great! She and I are going to Seattle in a few weeks for a long weekend with Bobbi and Nick; we just booked a hotel on Capital Hill that looks like a fun place. It's very near the gay district, so we may see some Bears! I'm looking forward to it- it's been kind of a rough week, between work and finding out that several people I care very much about have very serious illnesses. Shyt, when it rains it pours! May as well be in Seattle then, eh?

Morrigoon 07-20-2008 03:06 AM

Julie Andrews sang tonight :):):)

My heart ached for her when I realized how toasted her pipes really are (I couldn't imagine the loss would be so great). But she's still Julie FREAKING Andrews, with more class, grace, and stage presence than any one person should have a right to.

There were some good singers with her, including a name I'd heard before (I believe he does the Hollywood Bowl thing with reasonable frequency) but never seen myself: Jubilant Sykes. Very good. And the other two guys were pretty damn hot (and so very obviously off the market to my half of the population ;)) The women were adequate. They were good, just didn't exactly blow you away. The going theory is that they couldn't outshine Julie... that would be bad.

I then went over to Twitter to see what it is. My jury is out on it - probably too time-consuming is my hunch - but I do love texting for keeping track of my two teenagers.

Random self-aggrandizing post -

Tonight, I am holding a public reading of my latest play. It's called:

GOOD WITNESS: Secret Lives of the Born Again.

I have a dozen of Central Florida's finest actors participating, and I'm told that there will be at least a few attendees who could potentially give the work a full production someday. Here's hoping.

The play is a comedy in two acts, and it charts the foibles and frustrations of several families in the evangelical sub-culture in post 9/11 America. It's all about beer, prostitution, cute puppets, the rapture, and much more.

Wish me luck. Now, please resume the Soooo.... thread already in progress.
