The best part about Lone Pine is that there's not much light polution. At night, with no moon, you can see the milkway. It's awesome. I camped out there once, it's truly stunning.

Yes, the Alabama hills are sort of the foothills of the sierras in the owens valley, Mount Whitney is nearby. On the opposite side of the valley in the white mountains there are some great ghost towns too. |
