How about a group volunteer project (beach clean-up, etc) followed by pizza and beer somewhere?

I too was born in September, but I don't in any way acknowledge my birthdays as they arrive.

Though this has just reminded me that yesterday (or possibly tomorrow I can never remember which) my mom turned 50. 13 years too late she is finally old enough to be a grandma.

Frankly, it's not all that great. grabbing sardines from the ocean and put them in a bucket to release them. I did it once as a kid, and the best part was stopping for donuts. :D
