Man, I moisturized this morning and everything, but my skin is painfully itchy from the dryness! Doesn't even seem that dry to the touch except every time I move I can feel it get all prickly.

Bring on the rain!

And beware when they send it back that you will have to be home to accept delivery or pick it up at Fedex they won't leave it.

The Truth About Married Life ....
Three women friends, one in a casual relationship, one engaged to be married and one a long-time wife, met for drinks after work. The conversation eventually drifted towards how best to spice up their sex lives.

After much discussion, they decided to surprise their men by engaging in some S&M role playing.

The following week they met up again to compare notes. Sipping her drink, the single girl leered and said, "Last Friday at the end of the work day I went to my boyfriend's office wearing a leather coat. When all the other people had left, I slipped out of it and all I had on was a leather bodice, black stockings and stiletto heels. He was so aroused that we made mad passionate love on his desk right then and there!"

The engaged woman giggled and said, "That's pretty much my story! When my fiancé got home last Friday, he found me waiting for him in a black mask, leather bodice, black hose and stiletto pumps. He was so turned on that we not only made love all night, he wants to move up our wedding date!

The married woman put her glass down and said, "I did a lot of planning. I made arrangements for the kids to stay over at Grandma's. I took a long scented-oil bath and then put on my best perfume. I slipped into a tight leather bodice, a black garter belt, black stockings and six-inch stilettos. I finished it off with a black mask, ready for action.
When my husband got home from work, he grabbed a beer and the remote, sat down and yelled, "Hey, Batman, what's for dinner?"

So what the f is the "Rappahannock School for Girls". When you do a Google search (with the term in quotes), besides getting the LoT as the second site, it appears that one gets a lot of porn.

Which explains why, when one switches to an image search, there are only 16 images that come up, and ALL of them are from the LoT.

Well, the neighborhood hasn't burned down yet - but there's a scary orange glow on the hillside, and we occasionally get bits of ash.

This was a really fun anniversary, though - lot's of screaming and laughing.

It started off a long time ago as an inside joke between Isaac and me.
It's an obscure (and funny) reference from an "I Love Lucy" episode.
I doubt if I'll find the clip on YouTube... but I'll give it a shot.

Had a visit with my new doctor. I really like him. He seems like the kind of guy who is level-headed and whom I can tell anything without feeling judged (which I have by previous doctors).

I may possibly have hypertension. (YAY genetics and crazy schedule!) I can manage my tonsils. (A story probably best saved for another day!) Both of my knees naturally hyperextend, and that's a portion of the reason I've been having so much knee trouble - that and the weight gain, etc, which is being worked on and I'm down 5 lbs! (Go genetics, again!)

All in all, not too shabby!

Betty 10-14-2008 09:11 AM

The "White" Rhino is actually a misinterpretation of the Afrikaaner name, which, although I'm don't remember the spelling, is pronounced "vight". The word in Afrikaans means "wide" and refers to the shape of the animal's mouth, as opposed to the other prevelent species in Africa, which has a narrow, triangular mouth (with, by the way, a prehensile upper lip!) and is, merely by comparison, known as the "Black" Rhino.

Our black rhino, Pete, is actually one of the sweetest animals I've met. He loves to be petted and scratched behind his ears. He and his mate, Miadi, had a baby named Imara about ten years ago. I got to meet Imara when she was about the size of the one in this picture! What a sweetie!

On a sad note, Miadi passed away about four years ago. Pete was slated by the rhino SSP to get a new mate this month. The new female was en route from Kansas City last week when keepers transporting her noticed her becoming agitated and shaking the truck just outside of Phoenix. They immediately contacted our vet, who contacted the Phoenix Zoo's vet staff. The truck reached the Phoenix Zoo and the staff there was heroic in there efforts to aid the distressed animal. Sadly, the female passed shortly after arriving at the zoo in Phoenix.

This was a young, healthy animal. All precautions, training and protocols were in place for the transport. Keepers transporting her checked on her condition every two hours during the trip, and until they got to Arizona everything was fine. A necropsy will be done to try and determine the cause of death.

Needless to say it was a very sad day at the zoo.

I was watching a show on Bravo when it was interrupted with an Emergency Alert - Child Abduction. It was very odd. Does this happen often?

figment1986 10-16-2008 12:06 AM

I dont get interupted, but i dont have cable so its less likely to happen.

Update: surgen says everything is on track and theoretically the numbness in my chin will go away sometime by a year after the surgery... guess I get to get used to it. also, no more dietary restriction from him... so its down to the ortho's restrictions and such which are easy to get around anyway and for the braces and not my jaw ;)

my radio show is alright, kind of stressful when i dont have anyone to interview to fill in my breaks so i just read random copys from the news service we have... I hope to get some interviews and such taped and recorded before the time at the station is done for the semester... though im practically guaranteed a spot for next semester so I can claim i still have a show when needed.

Wow! That is so awesome. I want to pet a rhino. If it wasn't so extremely expensive to do it at the San Diego Zoo, I would have done it in a heartbeat.

I heard about the rhino dying and it broke my heart. But I was picked right back up again when I heard about the newborn.

Ghoulish Delight 10-16-2008 11:09 AM

So this year, my mom handed me a watch that belonged to my grandfather. It's a classy, but not very flashy, piece. I like it a lot. It's comfortable, it looks nice, it's self-winding, and it's in better shape than the watch I had been wearing. So it's become my daily-wear watch.

A conversation last night may prompt me to not wear it so casually. While playing pool, one of the guys in the league asked to look at it. "That's a nice watch, I'm a collector." He didn't really say much beyond that other than to brag about a watch or two in his collection, but it got my wheels turning.

I haven't pinned down exactly the identity, but I did find one site that has what is clearly the same watch on sale for €400 (~$580). That site says it's a 1977 model, haven't found corroboration on that. As a counterpoint, I found one on Ebay selling for ~$90, so perhaps that first one was inflated.

The things I do know are that it's a model line from Omega that's been in existence for a long time (at least the 50s), most of them seem to be worth something, and this particular one appears to be hard to find as those are the only two I've seen online of my specific watch among thousands of other examples of the Seamaster line.

Betty 10-16-2008 11:22 AM

I say - wear it. The enjoyment you'll get from wearing it I think will outweight that that you'll get from looking at it occassionally as it's stored in a drawer.

Did your Grandfather wear it daily? Or was it for special occassions? That might give you some insight as well.

Ghoulish Delight 10-16-2008 11:28 AM

I honestly don't know if he wore it daily. He passed away many years ago, the watch surfaced recently.

And generally I'd agree that I'd rather wear it than sock it away, but I'm kinda rough on my watches, end up banging into things a lot, so I don't want to put this one through that. At the very least I need to stop wearing it daily to work where I'm pretty regularly squeezing my hands into small spaces between metal computer cases and components.

Gemini Cricket 10-16-2008 11:32 AM

Maybe wear it on special occasions?

Disneyphile 10-16-2008 12:07 PM

I just literally got sealed into my apartment with plastic sheeting. (They're finally painting our section of the building.)

I suppose it's a good thing I don't have a client meeting this afternoon, considering they didn't even knock on my door and say, "By the way, we're painting your area right now." They just started sealing me in, even though the blinds are open and they looked right at me!

I guess it's a good thing they're painting and not fumigating.

Betty 10-17-2008 06:18 AM

Yeah - but what's the solution. How do you buy American when there's nothing to buy?

I thought the free trade agreement was supposed to benefit us... that it would encourage other countries to buy from the US. Instead, it just seems like there's very little we here in the USA can buy from ourselves.

My Company is still producing electricity domestically, so fire up your gadgets and help feed our economy

blueerica 10-17-2008 07:29 AM

I think the way I've always seen it is that a larger portion of the US has opted out of the manufacturing industry. Certainly, there are strongholds of manufacturing, particularly in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, but that's mostly in the processing of food and certain manufacturing materials, but I've been under the impression that people are (generally) setting themselves up for higher education aspirations and that most people don't get their Bachelor's degree just so they can build a Barbie doll... maybe market that doll, but attaching heads notsomuch.

JWBear 10-17-2008 09:03 AM

I drove to Vermont today to go leaf-peeping. It was fun.

Morrigoon 10-20-2008 09:56 AM

So I guess some files have been released regarding military UFO sightings: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27279684/

I think the theory that it was a US experiment in electronic warfare is an interesting one.

alphabassettgrrl 10-20-2008 10:40 AM

So SNL was good this last Saturday. Gov Palin was on in a couple scenes; they did a thing with her and Tina Fey together. It's SNL, so sometimes things and actors are real, sometimes they're SNL people and sometimes it's hard to tell. But I liked it, and Gov Palin was a good sport about it, which reinforces my feeling that she's probably fine as a person, though I still don't want her in the White House except to tour it.

Andrew 10-20-2008 10:47 AM

Palin looked uncomfortably hot in those boots at the end.

Morrigoon 10-20-2008 10:51 AM

Highest rated episode for SNL in 14 years.

Morrigoon 10-20-2008 12:12 PM

Some of those sketches reminded me why I don't usually watch SNL. The engagement sketch, for example, dragged on for freaking ever and wasn't funny. They should have some way of quickly winding up sketches that aren't working.

LSPoorEeyorick 10-20-2008 01:05 PM

They've had problems properly ending sketches for years. And years. The only one that ever worked perfectly for me, aside from the cold-open "live from NY..." and Weekend Update was the "you like-a the juice?" bit that ended in "you no like-a the sketch? You want-a the sketch-a to end? We end-a the sketch."

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 10-20-2008 02:18 PM

SNL has sucked for many years now. Someone needs to resurrect Phil Hartman...

Ghoulish Delight 10-20-2008 02:32 PM

SNL was great the past couple of seasons, imo. This season, aside from some of the political sketches and one or two off-the-wall sketches has been pretty flat. Even the digital shorts, which had been comedy gold, have been so-so this season.

We still haven't seen this weekend's episode.

Not Afraid 10-20-2008 02:42 PM

So many of the great cast members are gone. Very sad.

lizziebith 10-20-2008 06:20 PM

Why are the neighbors making loud barfing sounds? I'm pretty sure they are not actually vomiting...in fact I think they are playing a game of some sort (between the barfing sounds I hear clapping and loud yelling/exhorting). Does anyone know what game involves barfing sounds??? You know, so I can not purchase it by mistake?

lindyhop 10-20-2008 06:23 PM

A couple of things I'm wondering about...

Why is Upland High School convinced that I attended that school and that life can't go on until I call and give them my current biographical information?

Why would the US Census try so hard to contact someone at a specific address? I've had the them knock on my door twice in the past week or so asking about my next door neighbor. All I could tell them was that I don't know his schedule but as far as I know he's still living there. Today I saw they'd left another business card on his door. In the time that these inquiries have been going on I haven't seen him at all and his van was parked in his space only once for a short time. The weirdest thing is that his living room window is wide open (but the blinds are drawn).

Chances are pretty good that it is not actually UHS calling, but a company that makes money by marketing an alumni directory. If you give them info, they will next be hounding you to buy the directory.

Been there, done that.

Yes, but I've never even been in Upland, let alone gone to high school there. I could call them and tell them they have the wrong person but I'm curious how many times they'll try to contact me. It's a postcard actually, not a call, and they insist "we do not want to print the directory without your current biographical information." Little me, holding up the whole process.
;)

MouseWife 10-20-2008 10:08 PM

Ooo! Oooo! I wonder if he is involved with the kidnapping case in Las Vegas?

{a stretch, I know....but it's all I have...}

The other thing, may be you share your name with someone who did live in Upland?

We get calls for a guy who has a name only somewhat similar to the Hubsters and we always get calls for his dad.

I happened to look at my keyring today.

There are four keys on it that I have no idea what they go to.

Now I'm afraid to remove them.

Betty 10-22-2008 08:13 AM

Put them on a seperate keyring and put them in the "junk drawer". Then, years from now, you can really wonder what they were for... Like I do with my keyring. Funny that the one key I do need though, isn't on it.

Kevy Baby 10-22-2008 08:20 AM

Sooo... I'm getting ready for a short four-day weekend trip to CT and NY for my mom's 30th anniversary shindig. It was going to be a longer trip, figuring that as long as we were flying cross-country, we might as well stay a while and see the sights, so we were going to go up to Montreal for a few days and then visit Stan4dSteph before flying home.

Then Jen found out her vacation request was denied. :( So now it's just me, and I'm now doing a red-eye flight Thursday night (SJC-JFK), driving to my mom's place in CT on Friday, still visiting Stan4dSteph on Sunday :) and flying home (ALB-SJC) on Monday.

I don't especially like traveling alone. But it's been quite a while since I've done it so I guess we'll see how it goes.

She is the designated trainer for new people in her department, and within a couple of weeks two people left and one joined so she has to stay there and train the new person. If she left they'd be doubly shorthanded.

You're lucky. I'm still able to do my job without my laptop, albeit with many small inconveniences. I was back from vacation a week and a half ago and I finally today remembered to bring my laptop back in.

Normally I'd be able to function without a computer if I had to, but these aren't normal times around WaMu so I decided to not bother trying.

I signed the lease on a condo tonight! It's way too small for all of us, but it's worth it to see only my name on a lease. With no official proof of income (as my $$ comes from as-of-yet unofficial child support and student loans), and Michael unwilling to sign a lease, I was pretty stressed about finding a place without an application that wasn't in the world's worst neighborhood. But the neighborhood is perfect, it's affordable, and my critters are welcome. My first solo place! Life is good!

I love my quiet morning with a nice hot cup of tea before going to work. Shawn had to go to Glendale this morning; not sure he'll be home when I get off tonight. ::pout::

Planning a mountain bike ride tomorrow but may be skunked due to red-flag warnings for the Santa Monica mountains. I can't find information on the specific area we're planning to ride, but there's a map that seems to include it in the red-flag closed zone. I'm only stressed because I won't be here to post anything to the bike list and I don't want people to show up if it's closed.

Got a few more minutes but then I'm off to work. See y'all!

OK... I've got something for the Soooo..... thread.

H and I have been thinking about buying a house for a long long time. Over the past couple of months, we've gotten serious - got a pre-approval letter from a mortgage broker, hired a local real estate agent, started aggressively searching...

Lats week, we made our first offer on a house. Unfortunately, two other offers also went in (in this market!) and the sellers countered with the original asking price. We couldn't get involved in that kind of deal, so we walked away.

Friday evening, we saw another place. Made an offer on Saturday morning. It was countered that evening. We came back with a second offer on Saturday night. They came back again (before their open house!) on Sunday morning. Our best and final offer is now in - their deadline to respond is tonight at 5pm.

It's been a crazy week. We've missed what by all accounts was an amazing party, we've eaten way too much crappy comfort food, and we haven't slept more than a few hours a night.

This is fun.

It's been a crazy week. We've missed what by all accounts was an amazing party, we've eaten way too much crappy comfort food, and we haven't slept more than a few hours a night.

This is fun.

Mousepod: feeling stress is normal. Buying a house ranks right up there with being born for the amount of stress that accompanies it. But rest assured, it just means you're paying attention. Just wait till the day you sign your loan docs!

alphabassettgrrl 10-28-2008 10:42 AM

My moment was when they handed me the keys to the house.

I just started watching "Paranormal State" and I'm quite amused. Not up to TAPS quality, but they're entertaining. I watch the team members, and they're trying to take it so seriously it just strikes me as odd and funny.

I'm not sure what to think about the exorcisms; apparently it works for the people involved, so that's cool.

Morrigoon 10-28-2008 10:49 AM

For us it was the signing because the bank tried to make some last minute changes to our loan we weren't too pleased about. We walked away from the table and after some interesting phone calls, our loan paperwork was modified to what it should have been.

madmonkeygirl 10-28-2008 10:50 AM

Mousepod it will be all worth it when you sign the loan papers and get your house keys. My sister and her husband couldn't even sell their condo (they've tried more than 3 times i think) so be greatful there are houses out there and that you were able to get a loan etc.

Morrigoon 10-28-2008 10:51 AM

I smell pumpkin pie. Dammit, I smell pumpkin pie!

Morrigoon 10-28-2008 10:51 AM

Agreed. Having the home is totally worth it (although I admit a certain fondness for the mousepods' current digs, as well)

Ghoulish Delight 10-28-2008 11:26 AM

The bunny saga continues:

They freaking love each other and are practically inseparable. I kid you not.

A couple weeks ago, Munchkin finally gave in and started grooming Lito. Now Lito follow Munchkin everywhere, which she tolerates surprisingly well, only occasionally getting annoyed and shooing her away. They eat together, and we even left them in a single cage one evening (I think Munchkin was a little miffed over that one).

The new development this week is that Munchkin is actually letting Lito return the favor and groom her! Lito's still a little overzealous, clamboring onto Munchkin's back. She also has a short attention span. So wheras Munchkin would happily sit there and be groomed for hours on end, Lito gives a few licks and walks away - and for some reason usually deicdes that right over Munchkin's head is the best path. Leading to Kodak moments like this:

Spoiler:

Best of all, Munchkin's finally out of her funk it seems. She's eating better, spending much more time hanging around us instead of lurking upstairs, and wants attention instead of bolting for the cage the moment you acknowledge her presence. Yay bunnies!

Betty 10-28-2008 11:29 AM

For those of you who know Dustysage....(no real opinion here)....I will always remember the day my Hubby met him. Ugh, I better get some salt if I'm going to be eating these words.

A new day brings a new dynamic. Out of nowhere, Lito is now constantly trying to mount Munchkin, much to Munchkin's dismay. And Lito is relentless, ignoring Munchkin's rather forceful hints to stop. This morning was nothing but cartoon-style whirlwinds of fur and bared teeth (no actual damage, or real attempt to damage, just trying to get a point across), and we had to grab Lito and lock her up to stop it.

At least they're still inseperable.

So, adding to the random things I've learned from doing the New York Times crossword puzzle every day:

Taco Bell is named after its founder Glenn Bell.

Morrigoon 10-29-2008 12:36 PM

Dr. Albert Falls?

Princess Dala 10-29-2008 12:36 PM

I've decided to quit my job and join the circus.

Morrigoon 10-29-2008 12:37 PM

Huh? That picture would inspire me to do the exact opposite.

Gn2Dlnd 10-29-2008 12:41 PM

And, of course, everyone knows that Walt Disney was such a great admirer of Kirk Douglas that he named Disneyland after Ned Land, Mr. Douglas' character in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

Alex 10-29-2008 01:16 PM

Can't tell from the responses, but I'm serious about Taco Bell. Glenn Bell founded the company in San Bernardino in the mid-1950s.

Morrigoon 10-29-2008 01:17 PM

Figured you were, but it's still funny :)

Alex 10-29-2008 01:20 PM

I also love hearing about pockets of success. Da Vinci and Michaelangelo. Gore being a roomie with Tommy Lee Jones.

Makes me wonder what was in the air that McDonald's and Taco Bell both came out of San Bernardino within a few years of each other.

I don't know, but I think a lot of it ended up in the food.

Gn2Dlnd 10-29-2008 01:32 PM

The Inland Empire also birthed Del Taco and Naugles, both chains started by Dick Naugle. The first Del Taco was in Corona.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 10-29-2008 01:37 PM

I think it was "Unwrapped" on Food Network explained that Bell used to work for McDonalds and the founder of McD suggested that Bell start a mexican fast food place.

As I understand it.

Edit: Blah - it was Weinershnitzle founded like that. :pancake:

Wiki says Bell was "inspired by McDonalds to start the fast food place. :)

Alex 10-29-2008 01:46 PM

Could be. The Wikipedia page for Taco Bell tells a different version (he'd run several of his own things, experimenting with alternative foods that wouldn't be in direct competition with the already successful McDonald brothers hamburger restaurants).

But Wikipedia isn't exactly reliable and my knowledge is limited to that page and the NYT crossword clue this morning that prompted me to look at it.

The Wikipedia page for Del Taco says that the first Del Taco was in Yermo, followed by three in Barstow, and then the fifth one in Corona, which was the first with a drive-through window. It was with construction of the fifth store that Dick Naugle joined the company (though see previous caveat about Wikipedia sourcing).

Ghoulish Delight 10-29-2008 01:49 PM

So, I'm a recent convert to putting cream in my tea, specifically chai. Well, not cream. Non dairy creamer, or the somehow more disturbing "whitener". My question is this. Anyone have tips for how to efficiently pour that stuff from those Coffee Mate containers. One of these:

and now for the race to the "submit to Quotes" button
It seems I turn it over, two specks of the stuff comes out and then the hole is plugged up. I shake it, smack it, wiggle it, bang the cup against it. Nothing I do seems to increase the flow of the white stuff.

There's got to be some trick. Half of my tea break is spent trying to get enough creamer!

Huh, one of those "facts" I grew up with in Corona. At least we got the drive-thru window.

Looking at reviews on a Yahoo travel review site it closed in 2005. I just called the number listed for it online and it rang without answer.

Morrigoon 10-29-2008 02:41 PM

Prior to opening it, give the "creamer" container a good shake, and maybe tap the side of it against the side of the counter/table. That'll help separate the grains. Also, when you pour it out, don't tip it upside down, as that forces all the contents down against the lid, compressing it back into a near-solid block. Instead, tip it sideways and give it a gentle sideways shake like you would a glass ketchup bottle.

alphabassettgrrl 10-29-2008 02:44 PM

I want to know how many come back up!

One of the articles on the MSN main page is described as:

"Trick or treat?
Find out if that candy is good or bad for you"

Really? ... REALLY? Can I get a HELL YEAH from the Obvious Department of Obviousness?

(It's actually a comparison of "best and worst" Halloween candy)

Chernabog 10-30-2008 11:34 AM

So has anyone read anything concrete on the "pay as you go" AP plan? Al said it's coming fo' sho' in November but I don't recall an official date....

Betty 10-30-2008 11:38 AM

I'm suprised at the Twizzlers and the Skittles - I would have thought those not as bad as some of the chocolate. Perhaps it's the serving size... I wasn't paying much attention to that and now that the windows closed, I'm too lazy to go back and look.

Morrigoon 10-30-2008 01:58 PM

World's Heaviest Man Gets Married

Sounds like his diet's going pretty well, too. (that's not snarky, he's lost hundreds of pounds)

Yes, but chocolate has antioxidants. That evens out the playing field......

;) :snap:

alphabassettgrrl 10-30-2008 04:59 PM

Yes, chocolate in the proper dose is healthy.

alphabassettgrrl 10-30-2008 05:06 PM

So every day I say to myself that I'm not going to read the political threads.

And every day I do.

Arwin 10-30-2008 05:14 PM

I came to get my sister at her middle school today and those "Yes On 8" dads were picketting in front, causing traffic. Does that mean the 'noose' is back in fashion?

innerSpaceman 10-30-2008 05:19 PM

I don't know about that ... but does your posting in the Soooo thread mean you've fulfilled the membership requirement of reading it in its entirety?? ;)

CoasterMatt 10-30-2008 07:36 PM

I'm watching Purple Rain for what seems about the 1,000th time tonight.

alphabassettgrrl 10-30-2008 07:50 PM

Causing trouble in traffic, huh? Good job for the cause! I know I'd vote "no" just to annoy people who caused me to wait in traffic.

A guy who works with my dad HAS that on a bumper sticker.

alphabassettgrrl 10-30-2008 08:33 PM

I'm not sure if I'm amused or frightened.

CoasterMatt 10-30-2008 08:39 PM

The guy with that sticker also has a "Obama Has My Vote, He Can Fvck My Sister, too" sticker - he's a real winner :)

alphabassettgrrl 10-30-2008 09:51 PM

I'm not even entirely sure I understand that one. Nor am I sure I want to understand it. Some things just ought to be looked at funny and left alone.

Mousey Girl 10-31-2008 05:02 AM

Ah carp! You just reminded me that in order to get my paycheck and drop off my time sheet I have to brave protester's corner. There is a major intersection that is really popular with protesters. Luckily my mind is already made up to vote no on 8, if not the antics of last week would have made me vote yes.

You may not remember the traffic snarling street marches over AB101 several years ago. If Prop. 8 passes, I'm guessing the peaceful street marches of then will be a fond memory of the past. If 8 passes, you might want to avoid "protester's corner, " it will probably be like trying to drive through New Orleans Square during Fantasmic.

Then again, my hope would be that you'd get out of your car and join the protest. This is a truly fvcked up bit of hatery.

BTW, let me point out, the yes on 8 ads have exposed more children to the concept of gay marriage than leaving us alone would ever have. Good jorb, ProtectMarriage.aholes.

I can explain. It was two specific posts that targeted two different audiences. The first was for Joe Six Pack and Sarah Hockey Moms. The second was for everyone else.

Actually, no snow here, which I would imagine the first layers start to fall. Of course we were a few weeks early with our first snow, which ended up massive, followed by 70 degree temps.

We'll be getting snow/rain on Sat/Sun.

Who else would do a Halloween show called "Punkin' Chunkin'" all about people building catapults, trebuchets and slingshots for the purpose of competitive pumpkin tossing?

Hmm... maybe I should bring my jacket to work today...

Ghoulish Delight 11-02-2008 11:11 AM

So at first 2AM last night I glanced at my cell phone. It was displaying a message. "Windows Mobile has reset your clock for daylight savings time." And sure enough the clock read 1AM.

When we got home, shortly after second 2AM, I pulled my phone out of my pocket. And there again was the same message. And sure enough the time was now two hours back!

Wow, Microsoft has conquered time travel. How is it back there in the past? Here is the present/future it's very cool. Flying cars and jet packs and everything.

alphabassettgrrl 11-03-2008 12:52 AM

I got two hours of radio this morning instead of one. It went off like normal, I listened to it for an hour, it went off just as the DJ suggested everybody remember to turn their clocks, I turned the clock back, and the radio-alarm went off again so I had a second hour of music this morning. Hubby slept through it all. I still have clocks to change: kitchen, and one of the cars. My cell phone and my watch are switched, so those are the ones that matter most.

Sorry to hear that. My insomnia comes and goes but, with one exception last week, has been relatively quiescent lately. Tonight might be a different story.

Cadaverous Pallor 11-04-2008 09:00 AM

I feel weird. It's election day. Seems like a normal day so far, but it's not.

I don't even have something patriotic to wear today except my "I voted" sticker. Partisan stuff not allowed at my job. I need more red white and blue stuff.

Well, I'm wearing blue and my Obama 08 & No on 8 buttons. While it is not encouraged at work, several staffers have had things up at their desks (mine has only been a print of the NYTIMES Bullwinkle Assasinated) my leanings have been obvious. Since it is election day, I figure I can wear some more obvious buttons. How typical, one of the attorneys asked me, how did you vote on Prop K (prop to rename the sewage plant after W)? While I find it amusing, I voted no, it's a waste of funds.

Absentee, they do not give us I Voted stickers in the package (damn) and I did not want to stop in a polling place and try to get one.

In honor of the United States long standing policy of generous foreign aid packages, I gave my "I Voted" sticker to a foreign devil that works in my office. She wanted the free Starbucks coffee.

Capt Jack 11-04-2008 10:13 AM

and did you inform them that all they had to do is walk in and ask for some coffee?

the giveaway being tied to the sticker was abandoned after it determined that it was against campaign law...so SB decided anyone who asked for a free coffee, could have it...sticker or no.

Kevy Baby 11-04-2008 10:16 AM

Krispy Kreme is doing the free giveaway as well.

All the sticker says is "I voted". I happen to know for a fact that she voted absentee in the most recent election held in her God forsaken homeland. If the staff at Starbucks choose to interperate the sticker as relating to one specific election, that's not my problem.

Still it was a great win for democracy so I expect I'll get over it. After all, it's not like I could have had free coffee from Starbucks.

In desperation last weekend whil it was raining, I used Pepperidge Farms Chessmen cookies topped with marshmallows and broiled them in the toaster oven. I can say, they were incredible. I had no chocolate, but these really did not need it.

O and I went to see RENT (the HS version) at her school this weekend. Public kudos to her school for being bold enough to produce a controversial musical with thought provoking themes and for encouraging a bunch of upper-class kids to think outside of their narrowly defined lives (they tied the production to several charitable causes supporting AIDS/homelessness and drug addiction). I love O's school but sometimes I am so proud she belongs to such a great community which encourages the kids to think beyond themselves. :snap:

Moonliner 11-10-2008 08:31 AM

This I have learned this bright crisp morning...

The world is a larger place that one might think. Even things in your own neighborhood are more distant than expected.

My new suede coat, while the height of business casual style, is not as warm as I thought.

Change is actually good for some things.

Having a driver take you to work is really quite relaxing.

Overall, taking the bus because of car troubles, not that bad.

With the stinkin' nets they have put up at NHL games, the chance of a puck coming anywhere near spectators is nil.

Me no likey the stupid nets. So what if some little girl got killed? It's HOCKEY for cryin' out loud!!!

The kids and parents both loved it, it was sold out all 3 nights. O and her friend loved Angel and really "got" all of it except for Angel's death. They didn't really get the symbolism and asked what happened to him (although they know what AIDS is they just didn't get that he had died). The school had rated it PG13 but really there was nothing in it that I would deem inappropriate for 3rd graders, unless you haven't (or don't want) to discuss issues like homosexuality, homelessness or AIDS with your kid yet (which is cool-- you teach your kid things when they are ready to learn it).

Again, proud of the kids, proud of the school, proud of the theater director and proud of the head of school. :snap:

As are most of you I am definitely looking forward to Brad's farewell party on Skype on Saturday night but my Sunday just got really good really fast...well potentially.

Last night I started getting E-mails and calls letting me know that Mike Huckabee is coming to the local convention hall on Sunday afternoon to participate in a FairTax rally. I thought I might have to wait until Thanksgiving weekend when he comes through here on his book tour. Now I might be able to have a personal meeting with my hero this weekend!

It's like Christmas is happening early! I am so excited I might just burst!

Separate beds?

We have friends that are a married couple and they went to separate bed(room)s and found that their sleeping improved dramatically.

They were shy about letting it be known because they thought it made them look loveless but when they said it a bunch of other friends replied that they'd done similar.

Or if the pillows are wrong, or if there aren't enough (or too many) blankets, or if the cat under the covers is too far over on my side, or if I saw a spider any time in the last three hours before going to bed. Hmm, I have issues.

I wouldn't say I have trouble sleeping. Other than an occasional single night where I just can't get to sleep I've proven I can sleep anywhere anywhen under pretty much any conditions. Back in college our room was the eternal party room because me and my roommate, if we got tired would just crawl under our desks and go to sleep.

But I much prefer Lani there than not.

But so do our friends, they much prefer the idea of it, but in reality they just have vastly different needs for good sleep (temperature, light, covers, etc.). I think it's good that they realized it.

And, apparently, there is plenty of sneaking over in the middle of the night. They just get to relive their youth. When it is over you kick him/her out.

I've had one night of decent sleep, preceded by a few of really terrible sleep. The kind of night that I'm awake in the middle of the night and it's too cold to go out and play on the computer. I get back to sleep just in time to wake up for the morning.

I don't think separate quarters would help me much. When I'm not sleeping, there's really nothing in the environs that seems to be a factor, my brain just doesn't shut up. I just need to get up and occupy my brain for a while longer until it's satisfied and shuts down. Once I do that, I have no trouble sleeping with CP next to me.

Not to rain on your parade, but don't forget that this "win" is taxable as income (based on the retail value of the item). Since it is over $600, they WILL be filing a 1099MISC with the IRS and you will have to report it as $1,699 in income.

But, congratulations!

Ah, but thanks to the universe crapping on me most of this year, I've seriously made less than $6,000, so I won't really be owing much anyway. ;) I suppose that's my silver lining, making it the perfect year to win stuff. Heh. :)

I also just noticed that it's full moon tonight.
