Okay, so nobody's saying anything about the freaking fighter jet taking out several houses in San Diego in a fiery crash? I'm shocked there isn't a thread. Or am I the only person that considers that news?

Disneyphile 12-08-2008 07:53 PM

Dude!!! Gas at our nearby Costco is $1.65!!!! :D

:snap:

I'm thinking a road trip needs to happen soon.

Edit: Er, not to be insensitive to Goonie's post, which I didn't see until after I posted this. It's actually the first I heard of the tragedy, since I don't generally watch for news throughout the day.

Alex 12-08-2008 08:06 PM

I consider it news, but I don't consider everything that is news in the LA area to need a thread. Unless someone here was in the house. Then, it is 47.3% worthy of a thread. Just so we'll know who no longer needs a birthday thread.

Yeah, I'm kinda with Alex on this one. Three people died: that sucks. But unless someone from our San Diego area contingency is involved, a separate thread is not warranted.

BarTopDancer 12-08-2008 09:30 PM

I'm glad the pilot got out. He was trying to land in a ravine and avoid the neighborhood :(

Last I heard, 2 dead.

Not Afraid 12-08-2008 09:34 PM

BBC reporting 3 dead, but what do they know.

BarTopDancer 12-08-2008 09:39 PM

It very well could be 3. I haven't checked the news in awhile.

alphabassettgrrl 12-08-2008 09:47 PM

Reading LoT before going to look for news. Hadn't heard about the crash.

katiesue 12-08-2008 09:52 PM

San Diego paper is saying now three, it was two most of the day, and one more missing. All from the same family, grandma, mom and two kids Link

I panicked a bit when I saw the headline. I'm just north of Miramar and the planes and helecopters fly over all the time. This is southwest of Miramar so the other direction from me.

blueerica 12-08-2008 10:11 PM

Not to make the topic all non-death-like, but um.... Archer Farms' Caramelized Onion Hummus = AWESOME.

I loved Philosophy but Ethics was kind of a chore, largely because we had an ex-hippy prof who used to go off on tangents, all the while staring at the sky and playing pocket pool in his loose, velour harem pants. He was cool, but verrrry strange.

The pocket rocket ones were about 18 inches tall. Built for 3-year olds, but ridden by adults who really need a hobby. One of my neighbors had one. Boo.

I got in a hell of a lot of trouble in junior high because I discovered that a 'pocket rocket' (with a little bit of creative deconstruction) could fit in a locker- with the motor still running. That jerk never bullied me again.

My Holiday shopping is DONE!!

Morrigoon 12-09-2008 04:46 PM

Haha... so I posted on Facebook that I was getting ready for the Family Holiday Party tonight, meaning the one at work. My cousin reads this and gets all up for a party he thinks he's coming to, so he calls me up to find out details. Had to explain what that was, but then I ended up inviting him and his brother to Saturday's party. Kinda funny, kinda cool.

All this time I thought this was the name of a small vibrator - you got to have pretty deep pockets to hold 18 inches.

Moonliner 12-09-2008 08:37 PM

Speaking of Christmas shopping....

I have a conundrum. We will be spending the holidays with Mrs. Moonies side of the family. Their custom is to draw names for present giving.

This year I got the hag. You know the type, I think every family has one. The grumpy old lady who doesn't drink, read, cook, listen to music, etc....

As far as I can tell her greatest joy in life is bitching about it.

Still it is the most magical time of the year and I would like to get her something to bring a smile to her face.

Any suggestions?

(and no, a BOB is not on the list.)

CoasterMatt 12-09-2008 08:48 PM

If you're serious about this and really want some brownie points with her, go to the Twilight Zone Villa Homes, or wherever she lives, and find her two best friends, and ask THEM what she enjoys doing.

...whatever it is, buy one for her. :snap:

wendybeth 12-09-2008 10:52 PM

Find out what part of her life she was ever happy, or something approaching happy, and then buy her some music and lit from that era.

Oh, I read somewhere that the turkey from the Palin interview is on E-Bay. Does she like poultry?

ZOOLIGHTS!

ZooLights opened Thanksgiving weekend. This has been my life for the last two months. Now it's up and running and attendance is way up already.

Two nights a week it's my job to stick around and just make sure things run smoothly. It gives me time to take pictures:

The Bremen Town Musicians watch over the entrance:

The arch leading down the boardwalk:

Our steam engine waiting at the station:

(No, the ape is not climbing the stack. It's on the water tower behind the locomotive!)

Number One rounding the bend:

More

Alex 12-10-2008 01:24 PM

Do you guys have any animals out during the evenings? The Oakland Zoo does zoo lights too and it is kind of lame since all of the animals are in their night enclosures and so it is just walking around looking at Christmas lights (which is nice but not worth the hassle on its own).

ozron 12-10-2008 01:47 PM

Most of the animals are off exhibit - Some portions of the grounds are just not compatable to night time events. Visitors to ZooLights can see: Tigers, Polar Bears, Sun Bears and Elephants - the baby is viewable until 7:45. And the frog exhibit is running through December.

Yeah, the lights are the main point of the event, though. Along with the train, music, a model train display, and a fabulous holiday buffet. Trust me, it's a full evening!

Well, the partner I work for just came over to tell me the supe did the interview for my review yesterday (duh, like I saw her go in there doofus). In any case, he said it was an excellent review, and the one caveat he offered up to her is so minor as to be a non issue. Essentially, I do not nag him enough to sign the work I put on his desk. I can nag more, that's easy.

As for the associate I work with, no clue, she's not here yet, and she's far pickier than Kevin. Who knows?

At least I feel a bit more comfortable.

We're going to George's tonight for their Friday Kleftico special... Yum! <happy cheese>

Thanks for the congratulations and well-wishes! It's been a crazy few months, and I am both excited and dreading the reality of home ownership. We don't move in until mid-January (we're letting the erstwhile owner stay for up to four weeks to get her 44-year accumulation of stuff together), and it'll be a few weeks after that before our first movie night.

For the time being:

It looks great MP, I'm thrilled for you all!

MP, was this a single owner residence? 44 years of stuff, eek. This makes me want to really houseclean and purge myself of accumulated crud.

Do you guys need the name of a good mover? I used one that Disneyphile recommended on my last two moves, they're great: Delancey Street Movers. They're inexpensive and do a really good job. (Oh, and you can write off the move costs because it's considered a charitable contribution)

From what I understand, it's not exactly a comedy.

Gemini Cricket 12-12-2008 10:49 PM

You ever have random sh!t just pop into your head for no reason?
I have no idea where this came from, but during a quiet moment eating lunch today with friends I thought, "Rockin' Space Mountain fu cking sucked!"
And then without warning the thought went away.

lashbear 12-12-2008 10:52 PM

Good News, GC: THIS trip, Stoat is getting to see the REAL Space Mountain...

Riding with the lights on = not as thrilling....

CoasterMatt 12-12-2008 10:53 PM

Until this point in time, your brain had fought to even consider thinking about that abomination.

lashbear 12-12-2008 11:02 PM

I can't wait for Rockin' Matterhorn or even better...

Rick-Rollin'-Space-Mountain !!

alphabassettgrrl 12-12-2008 11:20 PM

While I wouldn't want it all the time, I did like Rockin' Space Mountain for a change. Kind of like I wouldn't want Haunted Mansion Holiday all the time, but I like it for the season. In spite of the down-time to change it over and back.

Rick-Rollin' Space Mountain made me laugh. :)

CoasterMatt 12-12-2008 11:23 PM

I wish Space Mountain had the trains from Knott's Berry Farms Pony Express.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 12-12-2008 11:35 PM

I only think about Rockin' Space when I bang my head against a concrete wall.

My mother had two antique cookie tins that she used to store Christmas cookies in since before I was born. I washed one of them in the dishwasher, this morning, just as I have dozens of times; and my mother a hundred times before. When I pulled it out, all the paint was gone - just bare metal. I'm devastated. One of my most treasured childhood memories is gone... ruined!

I know it's just a thing, but it feels like a part of me just died.

Gemini Cricket 12-14-2008 03:21 PM

For some reason, drinking beer and then wine and the beer again gives me such a headache the next morning. I have to think about not doing that too often.

wendybeth 12-14-2008 03:24 PM

I could be wrong, GC- I'm certainly no medical expert, but I believe you may be suffering from something commonly known as a.......hangover. Next time just go for the tequila shots. You'll still be in pain the next day, but the buzz is much better.:D

Gemini Cricket 12-14-2008 03:26 PM

Ya. But you don't drink tequila. You rent it.
:D
I'm definitely hanging this morning.

bewitched 12-14-2008 05:41 PM

Aw, JW...that sucks. I'm so sorry.:(

ozron 12-14-2008 06:16 PM

It started around 7:00 this morning. Now Portland is covered in a lovely layer of snow. The city is hushed an glowing, people are cheerfullly chilled and out enjoying the ambiance, and all the things that go with the first snowfall.

Unfortunately, a couple of inches on the valley floor translates to significant snow at 700 feet where the zoo is. ZooLights is cancelled for the evening. Ordinarily, this wouldn't affect me on a Sunday, but I had a date.

Out where she is, there's a lot of wind that goes with this kind of weather. So she didn't even want to leave her house, or have me try to go over there. Tomorrow the high is supposed to be 26 degrees. She's just in town for less than a week. I haven't seen her and Tuesday she goes back to Mexico.

Well, we were wanting to keep this casual...

Disneyphile 12-14-2008 06:48 PM

Well, I'm being nailed with a load of holiday hustle and bustle all in one day.

Tomorrow's gonna be busy as hell, but mostly fun.

Gotta get up early to grab the DL tickets for the needy family, then drop all the gifts off at the community center (or GusGus might handle that alone). Then, I'm going shopping with a couple fantastic ladies. Then, I have to prep some food and a graphical chart for a 2-hour long appointment in the late afternoon, followed by racing to LAX to pick up an old friend whom I haven't seen since '95, who, of course, is gonna want to hang out all evening, even though we'll be going to Disneyland the next day together.

CRAZY!!!

But... fun.

But, why does fun have to happen all at once?

alphabassettgrrl 12-14-2008 10:34 PM

Tomorrow (Monday) will be a Disneyland day!

Or, drink a glass of water for every drink you consume (preferably during consumption, but at least before bed), that way you don't dehydrate.

lashbear 12-15-2008 01:23 AM

Good luck with that, and bring a poncho!

ozron 12-15-2008 08:39 AM

There's a silvery sheen of ice everywhere, the forecast high is 25, and then there's that chill wind out of the east. Things are improving - chains are no longer required on metro area highways - but the zoo is still closed. We'll stay closed until we can make the grounds safe for the public. And we can only do that after we clear keeper areas.

So it's a weird day. We're all there, but the public isn't.

ozron 12-15-2008 08:40 AM

Icy downtown:

wendybeth 12-15-2008 08:54 AM

It's an icy, frozen mess up here too, Ozron. Got below zero last night.

Poured earlier this mirning, now clearing up a bit. Snow around the bay area and maybe some closer to home if it rains on Wednesday, it's supposed to be pretty nippy (28 or so)

My hangover advice: Be me, I'm apparently immune.

Even the one time I got so drunk I puked and blacked out I didn't have a hangover. The time I did five shots of five different alcohols in one minute (plus the two G&Ts I'd already had). The worst I've ever experienced is a dry disgustingly fuzzy feeling tongue.

I am a god among men. Worship me for I am beneficent.

Alex drunk. I think I might pay to see that. You'd argue with people for our entertainment - right?

Ghoulish Delight 12-15-2008 12:44 PM

You puked, that usually helps prevent hangovers, actually, so that's no surprise.

But the real question is, have you tested your theory since your 30s? I was similarly immune until the last year or so.

Alex 12-15-2008 12:45 PM

Please, don't question your gods, it reduces the beneficence level.

BarTopDancer 12-15-2008 12:48 PM

Actually, what you are looking for is Club Soda.
