Pedant alert:

These really aren't acronyms.

flippyshark 11-12-2008 09:01 AM

Yeah, I was afraid that might be the case. What should I call them?

The term "initialism" has some favor. However, maybe if you and I stand strong together, these usages will simply fade away.

If I pronounce them as written every time I see them, then they are acronyms.

innerSpaceman 11-12-2008 10:20 AM

Um, are acronyms pronounced as they appear?

Is the IRS not an acronym then? Hmmm.

If not, and since entities like the Internal Revenue Service better known by their initials have pre-dated the internet by decades, there has to be a term for them? What is it?

Ghoulish Delight 11-12-2008 10:25 AM

Abbreviation or initials.

An acronym is specifically a pronounceable word formed from initials. Scuba is everyone's favorite example.

STFU :p

CoasterMatt 11-12-2008 10:45 AM

My favorite acronym is SNAFU
