Some refrigerators are also eligible for rebates if they're more energy efficient.

This seems to be what I need to run a comparison

Unless it is an uncommon model, if you do a search online you can probably learn what the energy usage of your refrigerator is.

If you want to do a rough estimate of 20 year old refrigerators compared to current ones you can use this site. Using the defaults, it says about a $100/year electricity savings on average.

I'm so hoping this is the case with us. The sticker on the inside of the fridge says it uses the same amount of power as a 75 watt bulb....... I love our new fridge- every time I open it I marvel at how awesome it is. Mostly, because it's so clean. ;)

Edited to add: we also got quite a few energy saver rebates with this one- an instant $100 dollar one from the store, and several other send-in ones from the power company and the government.

I may have to look into that. I need to fund an inexpensive outlet usage meter.

Would ~$50 count as inexpensive?

I get to go and get a new remote for my cable box. The old one finally quit Saturday night. I hope they don't charge me, or look too close. There are quite a few teeth marks on it, and most of the buttons are gone.

That's one nice thing about Verizon. We've gone through several sets of remotes, you drop the things once or twice and they're kaput but they keep sending us replacements with no-questions or charges.

Same with Time Warner. We returned a cable box with a remote that had been thoroughly rabbit-munched and they didn't seem to care one bit.

Mousey Girl 05-03-2010 10:10 AM

They didn't even glance at the remote. She threw it in a box and handed me a new one. If I had known it would be that easy I would have exchanged it years ago.

I will miss the teeth marks... They were (mostly) made by a very special rodent.

We bought a $100 universal remote because it was the only one that did what we needed AND had had plastic buttons instead of rubber buttons that could be chewed off by a rabbit. Having lost at least 5 remotes to bunny teeth already, it was a good investment.
