Isn't melamine the stuff I ate off of as a kid? If I'm not remembering wrong, I'm kind of surprised that they haven't come up with something new since then.

But I do like that design.

Yeah, melamine is the old school plastic ware stuff. It allows for the colorful, sharp design and is sturdy stuff (usually, anyway, I haven't handled these). Regular plastic plates they came up with since then aren't as good.

Just a historic note: Melamine fell out of favor in the 70's after the introduction of microwave ovens. The original Melamine from was not microwave safe. They have now reformulated it so that you can use it safely in your microwave... Hence, the resurgence.

One of the reviews I read on those dishes said it was either not microwave safe or dishwasher safe - I forget which. Read the box first if that makes a difference to you.

They say not for microwave and dishwasher top rack only.

Ah, there's the rub. Bummer. Don't know if I could remember not to stick them in the microwave.

So...what happens when you put them in the microwave? Maybe that in-itself is reason for purchase - like Marshmallow Chickies

Peeps aren't as pretty as these plates!

The plates remind me of the olive green fridge in the kitchen growing up. Where's the orange shag carpet to go with it? ;)

I'll leave that and stick with the nice 1940's era vernonware (that is also not dishwasher safe).

But, I do need some new everyday flatware. Must remember to look at Target.
