Wikimapia

I'm not sure if anyone's found/linked this before - but whilst doing some researching, I came across this funny little thing.

www.wikimapia.org

It's as though Google Earth and Wikipedia had a baby - and this is what it looks like. Go to just south of the Huntington Beach Pier to find some tasty waves.

I could spend days on this. Har har.

It didn't take off like they hoped but you might find this interesting as well: Paceopedia. It is user supported and connected specific locations in Google Maps to appropriate articles in Wikipedia.

I've been going through the town of Vancouver, Washington, and labelling all the homes where I or family members used to live.

I'm sure somebody will find the little corner house labeled with "My great-grandmother used to live in this house. But she's dead now, so my uncle and his family live there." very helpful.

Oh, believe me, that is all too easy to do. First you look up your hometown, then you check out Disneyland, then famous cities, then obscure cities...

It's dangerous...

It doesn't seem to be working for me. All I get is the "Loading Map" page, then it hangs.

Yeah, it gets hung up a lot. The hybrid mode isn't working for me.

But I did find this place

Interesting, not exactly next door, but not too far either. I found this place.

I also noticed that the DLR entries are rather sparse. Perhaps we should take it upon ourselves to spruce them up. I hear the AP lounge has new carpet for example....

I don't know, I could see the real estate market seizing onto it if it lasts a while and address have a chance accumulate a history of entries.

I labeled the house I used to live in "Just don't dig up that lump next to the garage" :D

RStar 03-18-2007 09:51 PM

That's cool! Yes, I found my house, the house I use to live in, and then Disneyland. I noticed one of the entries was marked with a "Garden Groove". Very funny.
