Shopping help needed

I hate to shop. There, I've said it. And I especially hate to shop for something specific because it's guaranteed not to exist.

My son is getting married in a month, a month! I bought a dress but it's sleeveless so I want to find some kind of wrap or jacket or something to wear with it. The dress is a floral print that ranges from a medium rose to a purple that is almost black, all on a dark silver background. I want to find something that matches that silver color in a jacket or shrug or shawl that keeps the whole look appropriate for a dressy occasion.

I know that many of you swanky people can find cool stuff on the internet. I don't have that talent. Or perhaps you could suggest a store. Help!

lashbear 10-25-2009 07:37 PM

Can we get a picture of the dress?

How about a wrap? A rectangle stays away from the Jemima Puddleduck look so possible with a triangular shawl. Here's a youtube a friend made about how to wear shawls so you don't look like a grandma.

If you search "wrap" at nordstroms.com, they've got a sheer silk crepe in a dove gray for $58. I don't know how you feel about the gray. It could be lovely but a pink or purple could be lovelier and that, sadly, does not exist in this item. It would depend on the dress, of course.

Over at overstock.com the word "pashmina" brings up lots of lovely possibilities, including an irridescent silk-and-wool number for $19.99 today

Does this one coordinate at all? The quality looks pretty nice. It's $71.99.

Are we going in the right direction?

Helen, love the shawl video.

We must have a photo of the dress...then I'll definitely help with the crowdsourced shopping.

bewitched 10-26-2009 05:16 PM

I'm in. :D

The Lovely Mrs. tod 10-26-2009 05:43 PM

Bring it on, I'm in. BTW, thank you Helen. I just bought that pashmina in the blue. $1.00 shipping til midnight.

Okay, here's the dress.

I'd like to find something in gray because I feel like it would lighten up the whole outfit. The wraps on the Nordstrom site look like possibilities (I looked there myself but searched for everything but "wrap") but I'm also wondering if there's a nice dressy little jacket or sweater out there somewhere that would work.

I really appreciate the input.:)

Is something like this in your price point?

Could work. I just wanted to add that I'm looking for something to wear with the dress because the wedding will be outside and I may need to be warm as well as gorgeous.

Deebs 10-26-2009 10:14 PM

I love your dress! I do think a little jacket or cardi could work, but it seems to me that it would be much trickier to find just the right one. A wrap certainly seems the easier way to go since there is such a great variety from which to choose. You're going to look gorgeous, no doubt. That dress!

Morrigoon 10-26-2009 10:26 PM

How about a black velvet spencer jacket?

bewitched 10-26-2009 11:45 PM

How much do you want to spend?

This sweatercoat is black but it's really beautiful.

Again, not grey but the purple or black would be really pretty.

LOL, black again but...but this long-sleeved bolero cardigan is both cute and dressy.

Annnnnd...black again...

Here we go... dove grey velvet jacket. Elegant with a beautiful ribbon tie front.

Really pretty satin shawl collared jacket.

Here's a sequined, cashmere bolero that comes in grey, black and purple.

Dove grey, wrap cardigan, simple and chic.

Alright, I don't know if that helped, but I'm all caught up on my dvr'd Ghost Whisperer episodes and am off to bed.

Happy shopping!

Cadaverous Pallor 10-27-2009 07:38 AM

With that dress I'd agree with you, lindy, you need a silver/gray addition, since the other colors are so strong in the dress.

This one is gorgeous
, but pricey.

Before I'd spend $100 or more, I'd get this one delivered (not avail in stores).

For $15, I just ordered the 2nd one!

(Gotta love a thread where you're shopping for someone else AND find a few goodies for yourself. :D)

Deborah, I LOVE the colors in the dress and I think you would do it a disservice to wash it out with a pale gray. Make them pop with a black or find a purple or fuchsia that complements the beautiful.

LSPoorEeyorick 10-27-2009 10:59 AM

I'm with Lisa - black or bright from the palette. It's beautiful!

Morrigoon 10-27-2009 11:28 AM

That second link from Bewitched (Post #12... the "wrapped in ruffles" sweater) is GORGEOUS! Go with something like that in black!

3894 10-27-2009 02:09 PM

Glam dress! Nicely played. :snap:

Prudence 10-27-2009 02:48 PM

Eh, you've got an entire month. Why not knit something?

Got past my dad's birthday so now I can devote my time to this project.

I want to go with gray because I'm concerned about being the dark shadow in a sea of pale blues (the wedding party colors). Lightening up the dress a little with gray or silver is my way of making up a little for not going to David's Bridal for a dress that just isn't me. At the same time I've realized that light colors are not good for me. I'm going to see if I can find a necklace that will put some color near my face.

Three weeks now but first I'd have to learn to knit.:p I did entertain the idea of crocheting something for about a second and a half. But no. I would still be working on it during the wedding and that probably wouldn't go over well.

Now I'm going to go back to check out all the links. I let you know what I decide. Thanks!:)

That jacket is gorgeous but more than I want to spend.

This came today and it should work. It's a darker silver than the link above.

Tomorrow, shoes!
