Up until now, Disney's foray into China has been anything but magical. Its Hong Kong theme park, opened in 2005, has had a bumpy ride due to early missteps and competition — in its first year, attendance fell 400,000 short of an initial 5.6 million target. The following year, the number of visitors dropped to four million. To add insult to injury, the company in 2007 discovered an amusement park near Beijing that was filled with knockoff Disney characters.

But you don't throw in the towel in a market with 1.3 billion potential customers. After more than a decade of negotiations, Disney has received clearance to build its second Disneyland in China, this one in Shanghai. The company announced Tuesday that China's top planning agency had approved plans to build the new theme park, which will join existing parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong.
Has anyone been to the Hong Kong park? Rose and I have a plan- to visit all the Disney parks in the world- guess we will spend a little more time in China someday.

If Shanghai Disneyland is built on the same cheap as Hong Kong, I've no desire to visit either. But Pressler was all over Hong Kong, so maybe there's a glimmer of hope for Shanghai.

That said, one of the most gorgeous parks - Disneyland Paris - hasn't seen any growth in the past 15 years. It's arguably a prettier park than the original (though I wouldn't make that argument), but it's way short on attractions. Not nearly as drastically as Hong Kong Disneyland ... but it's a chilling illustration that parks with low ride counts don't necessarily make that up over time.

At the D23 Expo, they had previews of the next phase of Hong Kong DL. It looks amazing. Now that there are going to be 3 Disney parks in Asia, it'll be fun to do a trip to visit em all.

How far (by plane) is Shanghai from Taiwan? Anyone? Bueller...?

mousepod 11-04-2009 01:35 PM

427 miles.

I'm told that on its own, Shanghai is an amazing city well worth a visit.

Buzz suggests that the park will be considerably bigger and more built out than HK Disneyland was on opening day.

There's naught but speculation to go on though.

I think a Shanghai Swanking would be fun - we should be up for one in about 2013...

innerSpaceman 11-05-2009 04:46 PM

Grrrr, still a little disappointed over the Japan thing.

Ah well, someday (i hope)

lashbear 11-05-2009 05:23 PM

Me too - I'm still hoping to get there for a group swanking, but without a job it's hard to pin down a date just yet. :(

innerSpaceman 11-05-2009 05:36 PM

Yeah, got dat. I've got a job and I still can't afford it. :(
