American Cinematheque programming makes me feel old!

Not only am I aging another year today but I get an email from Amrtican Cinematheque highlighting a film festival of films from 1980. They then remind me that that was 25 years ago!

Films include:
  • RAGING BULL
  • STAR WARS: EPISODE V – THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
  • THE BLUES BROTHERS
  • and more.
It was ESB that hit me hardest. That was 25 years ago? I saw it on a date with a guy who is now the County Coroner for OC. Ahhhh, memories. Ain't age grand?

Ahhh, yes. 1980, it was a very good year -- the year I graduated from high school. How time flies when we're having fun! :D

I saw The Blues Brothers on a double date. We had to sit in the very front row of the theater, trying to be sly with the beers we smuggled in. And I saw Friday the 13th at the Drive-In on it's opening night.

That would be a very cool event to attend. I'd love to view some of those films in a theater again.

I was three years old. I'm sure my parents left me with a sitter while they saw Empire. :p

Wow, I would love to see "The Elephant Man" and "Raging Bull" on the big screen.

Hmmm... I made need to check out ESB on the 15th. That would be fun to see on the big screen again!

Are they showing the orginal Empire or the Special Edition?

I checked the site and it doesn't specify, but it does say "it played here 25 years ago", so one can hope. :)

That sounds way cool. Especially ESB and Raging Bull. It's been 25 yrs? How is this possible??!!

I'll find out what version they are showing. (A good friend is on of the programers.)

I would guess that it is the original as I don't think they have a digital projection system at the Egyptian and would have to rely on the old film (the "Special Editions" were all done digitally and I doubt they transferred them to film).

ESB will be the Special Edition. Lucas debuted the SE trilogy in theatres as the run-up to Ep 1.

Don't feel old...Just accept the fact that everybody else is too young to remember 1980 with any clarity.

That's why they need us.

Here's the response from AC:
Lisa,
Your e-mail was forwarded on to me. The version of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK screening during our upcoming "Films of 1980 Series" is the digitally restored version re-released several years ago; this is the only one currently available for screening.

Best,

Dennis Bartok
Head of Programming,
AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE

Ahhh, the films of 1980. It brings back many memories, I was a freshman. I remember seeing Elephant Man and Star Wars in the theater. I think we saw Blues Brothers at the drive in, it's a little fuzzy because we were drinking heavily.

It does make me feel old when I realize how long go that really was, ugh!
