Emphasis mine:

We are excited to confirm that the classic musical spectacular that thrilled Disneyland park guests from 1986 – 1997, will return for an exclusive, limited engagement at Disneyland park beginning in February 2010!
So it is only a temporary thing. I am guessing it won't be anything different (upgraded audio or video) from the original.

Longer lines.

Snowflake 12-18-2009 04:31 PM

Well maybe I will get to see it since I missed it the first time around.

alphabassettgrrl 12-18-2009 05:29 PM

Cool! I didn't see it before.

Gemini Cricket 12-18-2009 05:49 PM

This is scary. I clicked on this thread and my iTunes started playing MJ's "We Are Here To Change the World". And it's on shuffle.
:D

Kevy Baby 12-18-2009 07:05 PM

Yes, but you only have three songs in your playlist

RStar 12-18-2009 07:19 PM

Anything new in Tomorrowland is a plus, even if it is a past attraction on a limited engagement...

I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

Cadaverous Pallor 12-18-2009 07:36 PM

The timing on all this couldn't be worse for us parents-to-be.

Maybe if this lasted until May, our birthdays, we could get grandparents to babysit and do a Disney day including the World of Color show.

If I miss this I will lament it forever and ever!

BarTopDancer 12-18-2009 07:39 PM

Something tells me the "limited engagement" will be "extended due to popular demand".

Frikitiki 12-19-2009 12:26 AM

Like Miley's "Two Week Only" movie release?

"Extended due to popular demand" == "ah hell, we've got nothing."

"limited engagement" = if it doesn't attract the expected crowds we can say it was never permanent.

dlrp_bopazot 12-21-2009 02:51 AM

I Wish if Captain EO would Return to Disneyland Paris and Kick HISTA out for a few months .

Lemme know when you guys wanna go and I'll get you in

Cadaverous Pallor 12-21-2009 08:37 AM

That's so nice of you :)

Stan4dSteph 12-21-2009 09:06 AM

I doubt I will see this before it goes away, but I'm okay with that. I don't recall being that fascinated with it the first time around.

Chernabog 12-21-2009 09:37 AM

Can we PLEASE "Rocky Horror" it this time around?

wolfy999 12-21-2009 09:38 AM

Now that would be kewl!

MouseWife 12-21-2009 11:49 AM

That would be totally cool! :0)

I would love to see this. Saw it back in the day, don't think the youngest ever did.

Cadaverous Pallor 12-21-2009 11:56 AM

If anyone yells things out while I'm seeing Captain EO in the Magic Eye Theater for the first time in forever, I will punch them in the face.

You've been warned. :p

LMFAO!!! The image of that is now playing in my head, and has considerably brightened up my Monday.

Ody: We'd better find that landing beacon!

LoT member: Did someone say bacon? (throws bacon at the screen)

**CP turns and punches them in the face**

:D :D

Gemini Cricket 12-21-2009 12:15 PM

Which at that point, you'd need raw bacon for a black eye.
:D

Stan4dSteph 02-19-2010 03:19 PM

Official reopening date is this Tuesday, February 23.

BarTopDancer 02-19-2010 03:35 PM

No LoT member would waste bacon like that.

Do we know how long this will be open? My next trip down to LA area is late April. I hope I can make it to see it since I never saw it the first time around.

Minimum 6 months, but could be as long as 5 years. Don't think you'll have any problems seeing the show.

RStar 02-21-2010 11:58 PM

I'm going wed. the 24th. I'll be in a wheelchair, but I gotta go see it!

Chernabog 02-23-2010 09:57 AM

I dunno, I mean, I'll see it next time I'm at Disneyland of course (*mumbles something about his pass gone to waste this year*) but I saw Captain EO on youtube like 6 months ago any my reaction was something like "yup, that was just as bad/cheeseball as I remember it!" There was no outpouring of nostalgia or desire that they bring it back. Am I just getting crabby in my old age? Am I turning into Steve? *faints*

RStar 02-23-2010 12:11 PM

It's not so much about the film, but for me it is the nostalgia and for those who never got to see it to be able to experience it for the first time. I will likely only see it once or twice.

However, I never thought HISTA was as good as EO.

Anyone seeing it today? I hear some of the effects will be missing, I hope it's not the ones that immersed the audience into the film. And how were the crowds?

Where is his holyness of Curmudgeonville anyway? :iSm:

I haven't seen him around much lately.....

Not Afraid 02-23-2010 12:22 PM

The Curmudgeon is still on his annual YAGE hiatus.

I read a FB post that, at 10 pm there were already 6 people in line at the DTD security gate. They were going to open security at 6 am this morning.

I don't miss being a die-hard Disney geek at times.

Gemini Cricket 02-23-2010 12:24 PM

Per Dustysage on Facebook:
Quote:

The Starfield, lasers, and fog/smoke were missing (as expected and reported on MiceAge/MiceChat earlier). The motion floor was used. The print quality didn't seem very good and the film was a bit blurry. Disney had reported that it would be a glorious new print, but it just didn't seem that way. The crowd was e...nergized and enthusiastic. A huge cheer went up at the end of the film.

Stan4dSteph 02-23-2010 12:26 PM

http://www.twitter.com/mouseplanet - info on the opening and twitpics, including two children dressed as mini-MJs.

cirquelover 02-23-2010 12:52 PM

I know Zach would love to see this. We watched it on Youtube together but he is hoping to see the real thing. I guess we'll see if it's still there by the time we make it that way again.

Not to beat a dead horse, but they really killed HISTA when they took away the original opening segment in the queue and replaced it with the sappy Kodak loop.

Gemini Cricket 02-23-2010 05:06 PM

Kinda bummed about the starfield. That was a pretty cool effect.

Aww, that's a bummer.

No smoke, even? How hard is it to hook up a smoke machine? Sucks that they didn't do it up right. I do remember seeing it back in the day once and the smoke wasn't working, so maybe it's more genuine this way ;)

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 02-23-2010 07:31 PM

Saw DisneyDaniel on the Ch 5 news this morning.

RStar 02-24-2010 12:32 AM

Part of what made it good was those effects, the starfield, fog, and lazershots off the screen. I'm bummed they couldn't get that going as well....

Gn2Dlnd 02-24-2010 11:23 AM

I'm making a delivery down to the O.C. today, so I'll make time to do my construction walls tour of the parks. If there's not a ridiculous line (and I just can't imagine why there should be,) I'll take a look at Capt. Eo. This thing was so over by the time it was actually over, I don't get the excitement. I have absolutely no nostalgia for 1986.

Interesting note, though, Captain Eo opened on my birthday, and I was there with friends that week to see it. I remember how hysterical the audience found Michael Jackson's first utterance, "We're goin' in." Giiiirrrrl.

Special bonus: Lyrics to "Eo," sung to the tune of "Rio," by Duran Duran. Fire up the iTunes and sing along!

RStar 02-25-2010 12:12 AM

I went today, just had to wait for the next showing is all. It was great to see again, and have my mom see for the first time. I did miss the effects that were gone, but not as much as I thought. The floor moving during the dancing needs to be cut. Way too distracting. It was great during the fight and flight parts, though.

wolfy999 02-25-2010 06:51 AM

I went also yesterday....totally agree on the moving "dancing" floor. I'm glad I got to see it. My main reason for going was to see how the CM's had changed spiels (and chat with them) etc. Not much change, so no major adjustment for me when I start back to work. I guess it will be a nice change to watch this over and over again instead of HISTA....for a while.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 03-04-2010 06:21 PM

Saw it 5 times yesterday - the floor is annoying but works during the crash/flight scenes. The star field and lasers were totally missed. They need that. I hope it stays and they get the funds to return the theatre to its original state.

That said, I hope they'd use the newer 3D technology. It would imporve the show alot since those of us with not so even eyesite can see it.

Is it me or did I notice more "mistakes" in the film this time around?

RStar 03-05-2010 12:42 AM

I'm not sure what mistakes you are talking about, I didn't notice anything....

I agree that the 3D was not nearly as good as it is today, but that's part of it's charm. And those 80's costumes and hair styles made us laugh! But that's ok, it was captain EO!

While it might be nice to have it updated to the new technology, and have the theater revamped to include the full effects, I don't think it should go in permanantly. It's a nice little blast from the past, but the novelty will wear off quickly I bet. Something completely new and unique needs to go in. Something that will warent repeat visits and fill the seats for years to come.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 03-05-2010 08:27 PM

One thing I noticed was how Fuzzball came and went between shots in the scene where they're just out of the ship and get captured.

innerSpaceman 03-05-2010 11:03 PM

I don't think you can have endless repeat business for a film. It's just not the nature of the beast.

Not that I want it to stick around forever ... but of ALL the movies that have EVER played at Disneyland, or Epcot, or Disney-MGM or any Disney park I've ever been too, Captain EO had the most repeat draw power and was undeniably the most popular.

RStar 03-06-2010 12:12 AM

That's true, how many times can a person sit through the same film? I suppose it would be better if they would focus more on rides than films in the future....
