Happy Winter Solstice!

Today's the day. I figure if I'm going to get all secular with my winter celebration, this is the one. So dear friends... I hope that this year has been all you hoped it would be, and that next year brings you joy and prosperity!

Happy Solstice!

(officially occurring at 17:47 UTC)

Cadaverous Pallor 12-21-2009 08:49 AM

And a perfectly dark cloudy morning for it! :)

Happy Winter!

Kevy Baby 12-21-2009 08:59 AM

Happy Yule!

Chernabog 12-21-2009 09:38 AM

Now I just need Yul Ulu to come redecorate my place!

Strangler Lewis 12-21-2009 11:08 AM

Winter is icumen in,
Lhude sing Goddamm,
Raineth drop and staineth slop,
And how the wind doth ramm!
Sing: Goddamm.
Skiddeth bus and sloppeth us,
An ague hath my ham.
Freezeth river, turneth liver,
Damm you; Sing: Goddamm.
Goddamm, Goddamm, 'tis why I am, Goddamm,
So 'gainst the winter's balm.
Sing goddamm, damm, sing goddamm,
Sing goddamm, sing goddamm, DAMM.

LOL! You read my mind.

To celebrate the longest night of the year, I didn't sleep last night.

Happy Solstice!

So for you pagens out there, are the holidays reversed for our antipodal southern hemisphere friends? Do the Lashes have to wait 6 months for Yule?

Yes, today is the Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.

Right, so should the Lashes be dancing around their May Pole's today instead of putting a log on the fire?

sleepyjeff 12-21-2009 11:37 AM

Happy W-tice everyone;)

I too did not sleep much. We went to bed - woke up a few hours later and both my husband and I couldn't get back to sleep. Finally turned on the TV for a half hour and that was so boring I eventually was able to get some rest - well that and the tylenol pm I'm guessing.

This isn't all that unusual for me though. I seem to have this happen about once a week or so.

GD and I also had a bad night. My cold doesn't help.

Alex 12-21-2009 12:07 PM

I slept fine. I even slept all the way to the alarm at 6am which doesn't happen often.

Gemini Cricket 12-21-2009 12:19 PM

Happy Winter Solstice Doings!

Hmm.... same here. Bizarre.

Alex 12-21-2009 12:59 PM

We should have tried balancing eggs on their ends.

LSPoorEeyorick 12-21-2009 02:49 PM

Also a bad night for sleep in our household...

Ghoulish Delight 12-21-2009 02:54 PM

So, how many of us usually sleep well?

Not Afraid 12-21-2009 02:59 PM

The pugs usually sleep well. Last night was no exception.

Lovely! This made me picture an alternative version of The Wicker Man,
Spoiler:
in which Edward Woodward is frozen to death as the villagers sing this merry tune.

Bornieo: Fully Loaded 12-21-2009 03:23 PM

Happy Solstice! Hope the Yule Tide is gay...

That's Beltane...

Well..

Since Beltane in the Northern Hemisphere is celebrated on May 1, the inverse (six month difference) would be November 1st. The six month alternative to Yule (Winter Solstice) would be Midsummer (Summer Solstice).

However, it is still a tradition to use the Maypole for Midsummer as well.

I don't usually sleep very well but last night was awful! I think I just had too much on my mind though, so sleep just wasn't in the cards. I did get the rest of my holiday baking done though.

Happy Winter Solstice!

Not Afraid 12-21-2009 08:19 PM

Even with a terrible night's sleep, a day off and snuggle pugs I STILL couldn't take a nap. WTF?

I rarely sleep well. Last night I slept very, very well.

€uroMeinke 12-21-2009 10:02 PM

I sleep well most of the time, last night was no exception.

I can vouch for this. I listened to him all night while I was NOT sleeping.

And, it is 11:45 and I'm still awake and not really tired. This is not good.

Betty 12-22-2009 08:23 AM

I slept great last night - and woke up to rain! WTF? I didn't see any rain on the forcast and I demand a recount! ;) All blustery and stuff - made me want to light a fire and hibernate instead of coming to work.

blueerica 12-22-2009 08:51 AM

I slept better.

Alex 12-22-2009 10:05 AM

A minor storm blew through last night leaving this morning bright and crispy cold (by local standards).

So a happy day after winter solstice to me.
