Shakin' in the Southland

Holy crap! Apparently a 6.9 in Baja. Everyone ok?

That sucker shook for a LOOOOOONG time.

For a moment I thought I was on a ship.

Ghoulish Delight 04-04-2010 03:46 PM

Big quake - Shakin' in the Southlans

Just felt a big one. Seems to have been centered around the Mexico border, and we felt it, so it must have been pretty big. Seemed to go on forever, probably a good 30-45 seconds of rolling motion, lots of stuff swaying on the walls. Initial # from CalTech is 6.9.

There was apparently a 4.3 in the same area (near Calexico) yesterday.

Chernabog 04-04-2010 03:48 PM

Wowie! I was in my office for that one, 16 floors up, and it did feel cruise shippy :p

Ghoulish Delight 04-04-2010 03:49 PM

Merged threads.

JWBear 04-04-2010 03:50 PM

Felt it strong here at my sister's house in Placentia.

DreadPirateRoberts 04-04-2010 03:50 PM

I feel a little seasick

Yeah, for a moment, I thought my ultimate wish had come true - that I was magically transported aboard the Disney Magic.

BarTopDancer 04-04-2010 03:51 PM

DISLIKE! Felt like it was never going to stop.

Not Afraid 04-04-2010 03:58 PM

I was in my usual spot for earthquakes - on the toilet. We were outside painting and Chris felt it sitting on the ground.

My first thought was "He is Risen!".

BarTopDancer 04-04-2010 04:00 PM

I just told E I had time to deem it doorway worthy, get to the doorway and stand there for about a minute before it stopped.

Not Afraid 04-04-2010 04:01 PM

It was very long. Longer than I had to pee for.

Disneyphile 04-04-2010 04:08 PM

I'm anxiously awaiting for Pat Robertson to chime in. The majority of Mexico loves Jesus, so I'd love to see what he has to say about this one. ;)

I'm still waiting for him to explain how Vegas (aka Sin City) is still standing.

Not Afraid 04-04-2010 04:15 PM

And another, and another......

Not Afraid 04-04-2010 04:20 PM

A 5.1 in El Centro. just was added to the 3.4 in Julian and another one in Mexico.

Disneyphile 04-04-2010 04:21 PM

This is weird. Very weird. I keep refreshing the USGS maps to find more red boxes....

Not Afraid 04-04-2010 04:22 PM

It's the creeping quake!

Zombie Jesus is Coming!

Disneyphile 04-04-2010 04:23 PM

And, apparently, he's coming hard! ;)

Not Afraid 04-04-2010 04:25 PM

I have to pee again. Hold tight everyone!

Disneyphile 04-04-2010 04:27 PM

And.... there's another slight shake right now.

Dammit, Lisa. You're not allowed to pee anymore today!

BarTopDancer 04-04-2010 04:40 PM

At least E and C are in their respective homes and not at a hotel in IL having drinks together.

Wow, to outsiders that sentence must sound really fvcked up.

Disneyphile 04-04-2010 04:46 PM

And another.

Not sure whether to be excited or freaked out now.

Pour yourself a glass of something cold and call it a party?

I'm kind of disappointed that we didn't feel it here at all. I feel left out! :)

I keep refreshing the USGS site, too.

Not Afraid 04-04-2010 05:04 PM

Well, the creepy crawly seems to have stopped for now.

Alex 04-04-2010 05:09 PM

Dammit, can't you all share some?

Disneyphile 04-04-2010 05:11 PM

Yeah, but I'm enjoying the party of stupidity on the news right now. ABC7 is awesome. People are totally freaking out over water sloshing in their pools and chandeliers slightly swaying.

Now I don't feel so bad for feeling slightly concerned.

Not Afraid 04-04-2010 05:11 PM

It makes a lot of sense, but it is still strange, to see the quakes creep North along the 2 fault lines.

And, Baja was upgraded to a 7.2.

alphabassettgrrl 04-04-2010 06:04 PM

Well, in an earthquake, concern is a fine thing. Check your gas lines, your walls, that kind of thing, make sure there's no damage.

Freaking out over what you can see is nothing, that's weird.

JWBear 04-04-2010 06:44 PM

Home now. We all ran out into the backyard while it was happening. Their pool was really sloshing over, but no on thought to take a movie. It was loooooooooong!

katiesue 04-04-2010 07:09 PM

We didn't feel anything :(

innerSpaceman 04-04-2010 07:21 PM

So bummed I missed it. We had just entered the theater, and the coming attractions were rumble-the-seats loud. We had no clue there was a quake, but saw the texts when we were prompted to silence our phones. Bah.

Y'all are going to be in the doorway a LOT. I drink quite a bit of water.

I suspect people seeing Captain EO at the time also didn't feel it. ;)

I don't even wake up for 4.x. I better get something above six eventually.

wendybeth 04-04-2010 09:50 PM

JWBear 04-04-2010 10:53 PM

For some reason, this is my current earworm. I wonder why...

Ghoulish Delight 04-05-2010 08:35 AM

Wow. 2 deaths. And one was someone who panicked, ran into the street and was hit by a car.

Seems the larger towns near the border got lucky, with the bulk of the energy being directed away from them.

alphabassettgrrl 04-05-2010 10:44 AM

Two dead, 100 injured. I guess it hit in a low-density area which was lucky.

That's not a nice thing to say about these people who just went through the earthquake!

alphabassettgrrl 04-05-2010 03:36 PM

Yes it stinks for those who were in the area, but I'm thankful it wasn't a several hundred thousand dead, like a repeat of the Haiti quake.

See, I was going for the joke angle: calling these people dense.

It was only mildly amusing in my head - I should have just left it there...

alphabassettgrrl 04-05-2010 06:04 PM

Y'know, that occurred to me after I posted.

Ghoulish Delight 04-08-2010 09:51 AM

I KNEW it. I swear I felt another slow-rolling type quake a few minutes ago. Sure enough, a 5.5 in the same area as the big 7.2 happened at 9:44

BarTopDancer 04-08-2010 09:53 AM

Linky.

Didn't feel it (in Anaheim). But we also have 10 trains a day going past so I'm pretty immune to shaking at work.

JWBear 04-08-2010 10:21 AM

Didn't feel it here in GG.

Ghoulish Delight 04-08-2010 10:26 AM

I barely felt it, and probably only really noticed because there's a fair amount of stuff around me that swings easily.

katiesue 04-08-2010 10:29 AM

Felt it here - but as GD said barely. It was almost like a truck going by but it lasted just a little too long for that.

Not Afraid 04-08-2010 06:47 PM

I didn't even notice it. I think I was on the phone at that time. Next to the toilet, it is the second most common place you'll find me. ;)

I think I should go post that on FaceBook now, right?

5.0 aftershock (at least I assume it is an aftershock since it was in the same area as the latest swarm)

It is interesting to see the cluster of quakes in that area

So, one can assume, then, that if they are talking to you on the phone and there's an earthquake, you are also on the toilet. I'll make a mental note...

I was in the lab, and didn't feel a thing. But our balances are so sensitive, they were picking it up. The digital dials were flashing numbers like crazy!

You can when you're on the 2nd floor and basically on top of it. My friend felt it in HB too.

It was just a sharp jolt, nothing major but I already don't like them, and with the current swarm I'm a bit jumpy.

Ghoulish Delight 04-30-2010 08:25 AM

Wait,

"Boobquake" was a fun way to mock supernatural thinking

or

"Boobquake" itself was fun to mock?

alphabassettgrrl 04-30-2010 12:22 PM

Fun to mock the idea that the immodesty of women causes earthquakes, though I wouldn't take the mocking to all supernatural thinking.

I did wear a low cut shirt that day and I was disappointed that nothing happened. :) I wanted that sense of power.

Just felt one. Slow roller, probably a decent distance, but not too big.

Disneyphile 06-14-2010 09:29 PM

It shook us a bit hard here at first then rolled.

That was um.... fun.

JWBear 06-14-2010 09:30 PM

Ghoulish Delight 06-14-2010 09:32 PM

JWBear 06-14-2010 09:33 PM

The USGS site is slowwwwwwwww right now.

Not Afraid 06-14-2010 09:33 PM

Ca/Mexico border - Ocotillo and Seely, CA

Another nice rolling one. They have gentle, lulling earthquakes at this spot.

Not Afraid 06-14-2010 09:36 PM

I wasn't even on the toilet.

Downgraded to a 5.7.

Kevy Baby 06-14-2010 09:37 PM

You're lying

Disneyphile 06-14-2010 09:44 PM

The USGS should have a sensor wire attached to NA's toilet seat. :p

JWBear 06-14-2010 09:47 PM

There have been 10 quakes in the 3-4 range there in the last 15 minutes since the 5.7 one.

Not Afraid 06-14-2010 09:48 PM

I'm again watching the quakes move up the fault lines. It is completely fascinating! These 2 faults that join up where these larger quakes are happening must be disagreeing with each other.

Surely Lisa went to the bathroom or was on the phone at some point at that time. ;)

And you know we love you, you're such a sport! :D

And I agree with you, it was quite fascinating to watch live as the needle would scroll another earthquake (even though I never felt any of them). I didn't even feel the first one, I was walking through the house at the time. I heard the windchimes out side, and looked out and saw the tree moving. I thought it suddenly became windy.

Ghoulish Delight 07-07-2010 04:56 PM

5.9, out in the middle of nowhere between here and Palm Springs.

Or I was just glancing at a map with a huge red square and a couple city names on it.

There must be some weird rock densities between my workplace and Borrego Springs, because there was a huge separation between the so-called p- and s-waves. I felt the initial movement, it lasted for maybe 6-10 seconds. I was looking around to see if anyone else felt it. I saw a few others looking around. After the shaking stopped, there was enough time that myself and another coworker kept looking around for a couple seconds before making eye contact, giving a "yup, that just happened" nod to each other, standing up, acknowledging a few more people who'd felt it, starting in on a conversation...THEN we felt the second wave shake the building.

It could be that the size of the building (~50K sq ft. warehouse style building) meant that we couldn't really feel the smaller shaking between the two peaks, making it feel more spread out than I would have otherwise perceived, but it still felt like quite a long time between peaks*.

that's what she said

Morrigoon 07-07-2010 08:02 PM

Actually I think there may have been a few separate quakes there. I was looking at USGS earlier and it looked like a few small ones over the course of about 3 minutes (unless that has changed since I looked, which is always possible)

I felt one big bump, followed by a VERY slow roll.

Ghoulish Delight 07-07-2010 08:09 PM

There were several before and after, but not within the window that we felt the 2 movements, and definitely not another one within a minute big enough to have felt 90 miles away. The only explanation is the p/s wave separation.

Betty 07-07-2010 08:53 PM

We are closer then you guys but I didn't feel it was very strong at all. The whole thing lasted maybe 10 seconds with a pause in the middle. First half so mild I had to make sure it was an earthquake and not my imagination. The second half some small rumbling stronger then before but anything like one of the last ones I remember that lasted so long and was much sharper.

BarTopDancer 07-07-2010 09:45 PM

I felt 2 distinct movements. We're right next to train tracks so at first I thought it was a train. But they go by fast and don't make monitors jiggle towards the end of the rack they are sitting on. Oh and once they leave the slight motion stops.

Not Afraid 07-07-2010 11:06 PM

I missed the whole thing. I was only THINKING about going to the bathroom, but took the pugs out back first. I'm losing my edge.

No... You were only thinking about it and caused an earthquake. Your powers are getting stronger!

Gn2Dlnd 07-08-2010 10:20 AM

I had just pulled out of the apartment garage and onto the street, waiting to make a left turn at the light, trying to make a phone call. The call wouldn't go through, the truck was bouncing around in the wind, and I looked around at the trees blowing in the breeze thinking to myself that I didn't think it was this windy before I left the apartment.

Later on, when I saw on Twitter that there had been a quake, I checked the time of the phone call that wouldn't go through, and said, "Hah! It WASN'T windy!"
