Shakin' in the Southland
Holy crap! Apparently a 6.9 in Baja. Everyone ok?
That sucker shook for a LOOOOOONG time. For a moment I thought I was on a ship. |
Big quake - Shakin' in the Southlans
Just felt a big one. Seems to have been centered around the Mexico border, and we felt it, so it must have been pretty big. Seemed to go on forever, probably a good 30-45 seconds of rolling motion, lots of stuff swaying on the walls. Initial # from CalTech is 6.9.
There was apparently a 4.3 in the same area (near Calexico) yesterday. |
Wowie! I was in my office for that one, 16 floors up, and it did feel cruise shippy :p
Merged threads.
Felt it strong here at my sister's house in Placentia.
I feel a little seasick

I was in my usual spot for earthquakes - on the toilet. We were outside painting and Chris felt it sitting on the ground.
My first thought was "He is Risen!". |
I just told E I had time to deem it doorway worthy, get to the doorway and stand there for about a minute before it stopped.
It was very long. Longer than I had to pee for.
I'm anxiously awaiting for Pat Robertson to chime in. The majority of Mexico loves Jesus, so I'd love to see what he has to say about this one. ;)

And another, and another......
A 5.1 in El Centro. just was added to the 3.4 in Julian and another one in Mexico.
This is weird. Very weird. I keep refreshing the USGS maps to find more red boxes....
It's the creeping quake!
Zombie Jesus is Coming! |
And, apparently, he's coming hard! ;)
I have to pee again. Hold tight everyone!
And.... there's another slight shake right now.
Dammit, Lisa. You're not allowed to pee anymore today! |
At least E and C are in their respective homes and not at a hotel in IL having drinks together.
Wow, to outsiders that sentence must sound really fvcked up. |
And another.
Not sure whether to be excited or freaked out now. |

I'm kind of disappointed that we didn't feel it here at all. I feel left out! :) I keep refreshing the USGS site, too. |
Well, the creepy crawly seems to have stopped for now.
Dammit, can't you all share some?
Yeah, but I'm enjoying the party of stupidity on the news right now. ABC7 is awesome. People are totally freaking out over water sloshing in their pools and chandeliers slightly swaying.
Now I don't feel so bad for feeling slightly concerned. |
It makes a lot of sense, but it is still strange, to see the quakes creep North along the 2 fault lines.
And, Baja was upgraded to a 7.2. |
Well, in an earthquake, concern is a fine thing. Check your gas lines, your walls, that kind of thing, make sure there's no damage.
Freaking out over what you can see is nothing, that's weird. |
Home now. We all ran out into the backyard while it was happening. Their pool was really sloshing over, but no on thought to take a movie. It was loooooooooong!
We didn't feel anything :(
So bummed I missed it. We had just entered the theater, and the coming attractions were rumble-the-seats loud. We had no clue there was a quake, but saw the texts when we were prompted to silence our phones. Bah.

Y'all are going to be in the doorway a LOT. I drink quite a bit of water.
I suspect people seeing Captain EO at the time also didn't feel it. ;)

I don't even wake up for 4.x. I better get something above six eventually.
Dammit- would you guys keep it together at least until after our vacation? Lisa, stop peeing already.
I missed it. Left SoCal this morning... Omar mentioned he thought it felt like a boat like many others have.
For some reason, this is my current earworm. I wonder why...
Wow. 2 deaths. And one was someone who panicked, ran into the street and was hit by a car.
Seems the larger towns near the border got lucky, with the bulk of the energy being directed away from them. |
Two dead, 100 injured. I guess it hit in a low-density area which was lucky.

Yes it stinks for those who were in the area, but I'm thankful it wasn't a several hundred thousand dead, like a repeat of the Haiti quake.

It was only mildly amusing in my head - I should have just left it there... |
Y'know, that occurred to me after I posted.
I KNEW it. I swear I felt another slow-rolling type quake a few minutes ago. Sure enough, a 5.5 in the same area as the big 7.2 happened at 9:44
Linky.
Didn't feel it (in Anaheim). But we also have 10 trains a day going past so I'm pretty immune to shaking at work. |
Didn't feel it here in GG.
I barely felt it, and probably only really noticed because there's a fair amount of stuff around me that swings easily.
Felt it here - but as GD said barely. It was almost like a truck going by but it lasted just a little too long for that.
I didn't even notice it. I think I was on the phone at that time. Next to the toilet, it is the second most common place you'll find me. ;)
I think I should go post that on FaceBook now, right? |

5.0 aftershock (at least I assume it is an aftershock since it was in the same area as the latest swarm)
It is interesting to see the cluster of quakes in that area |

I was in the lab, and didn't feel a thing. But our balances are so sensitive, they were picking it up. The digital dials were flashing numbers like crazy! |
RStar: Lab? What do you do?
Didn't feel anything, but that's a pretty small one.

(Sorry, someone had to take that ball and run with it) |
A 2.7 quake? No one can even feel it.
Quote:
It was just a sharp jolt, nothing major but I already don't like them, and with the current swarm I'm a bit jumpy. |
Good thing No one was swimming
That's pretty neat, really. Though someone should have warned me to take some motion sickness pills before viewing the ultimate shaky cam.

I'm with you, Kevy! Might have been fun!
The Boobquake was fun to mock. :) |
Quote:
"Boobquake" was a fun way to mock supernatural thinking or "Boobquake" itself was fun to mock? |
Fun to mock the idea that the immodesty of women causes earthquakes, though I wouldn't take the mocking to all supernatural thinking.
I did wear a low cut shirt that day and I was disappointed that nothing happened. :) I wanted that sense of power. |

I'd seen a new big one on the quake site but it apparently was downgraded. So no point. :)
Well, there was a magnitude 7.5 earthquake near Wrightwood.

More than likely.
Just felt one. Slow roller, probably a decent distance, but not too big.
It shook us a bit hard here at first then rolled.
That was um.... fun. |
Just a gentle jolt here. Lasted about 2 or 3 seconds.
Lisa must be pissing again
Wheee!!! Just felt it in the office.
Looks like another big one by the border.
First estimate is 5.9.
The USGS site is slowwwwwwwww right now.
Ca/Mexico border - Ocotillo and Seely, CA
Another nice rolling one. They have gentle, lulling earthquakes at this spot. |
I wasn't even on the toilet.
Downgraded to a 5.7. |
You're lying
The USGS should have a sensor wire attached to NA's toilet seat. :p
There have been 10 quakes in the 3-4 range there in the last 15 minutes since the 5.7 one.
I'm again watching the quakes move up the fault lines. It is completely fascinating! These 2 faults that join up where these larger quakes are happening must be disagreeing with each other.

And you know we love you, you're such a sport! :D And I agree with you, it was quite fascinating to watch live as the needle would scroll another earthquake (even though I never felt any of them). I didn't even feel the first one, I was walking through the house at the time. I heard the windchimes out side, and looked out and saw the tree moving. I thought it suddenly became windy. |
Woooooooo. Rockin' in Garden Grove just now.
Felt 2 distinct shakings here in Costa Mesa.
5.9, out in the middle of nowhere between here and Palm Springs.
NA - were you in the bathroom again?
I thought my vertigo was kicking in - it was weird

ETA: we really need to combine the two earthquake threads! |
Two rolling gentle shakes here in Camarillo. Took me a second to register the shaking.
It felt a lot like the Easter quake.

There must be some weird rock densities between my workplace and Borrego Springs, because there was a huge separation between the so-called p- and s-waves. I felt the initial movement, it lasted for maybe 6-10 seconds. I was looking around to see if anyone else felt it. I saw a few others looking around. After the shaking stopped, there was enough time that myself and another coworker kept looking around for a couple seconds before making eye contact, giving a "yup, that just happened" nod to each other, standing up, acknowledging a few more people who'd felt it, starting in on a conversation...THEN we felt the second wave shake the building. It could be that the size of the building (~50K sq ft. warehouse style building) meant that we couldn't really feel the smaller shaking between the two peaks, making it feel more spread out than I would have otherwise perceived, but it still felt like quite a long time between peaks*. that's what she said |
Actually I think there may have been a few separate quakes there. I was looking at USGS earlier and it looked like a few small ones over the course of about 3 minutes (unless that has changed since I looked, which is always possible)
I felt one big bump, followed by a VERY slow roll. |
There were several before and after, but not within the window that we felt the 2 movements, and definitely not another one within a minute big enough to have felt 90 miles away. The only explanation is the p/s wave separation.
We are closer then you guys but I didn't feel it was very strong at all. The whole thing lasted maybe 10 seconds with a pause in the middle. First half so mild I had to make sure it was an earthquake and not my imagination. The second half some small rumbling stronger then before but anything like one of the last ones I remember that lasted so long and was much sharper.
I felt 2 distinct movements. We're right next to train tracks so at first I thought it was a train. But they go by fast and don't make monitors jiggle towards the end of the rack they are sitting on. Oh and once they leave the slight motion stops.
I missed the whole thing. I was only THINKING about going to the bathroom, but took the pugs out back first. I'm losing my edge.
I was driving home and didn't feel a thing. :(

I had just pulled out of the apartment garage and onto the street, waiting to make a left turn at the light, trying to make a phone call. The call wouldn't go through, the truck was bouncing around in the wind, and I looked around at the trees blowing in the breeze thinking to myself that I didn't think it was this windy before I left the apartment.
Later on, when I saw on Twitter that there had been a quake, I checked the time of the phone call that wouldn't go through, and said, "Hah! It WASN'T windy!" |
