That'll knock your teeth right out
 

We spent last night at the Urgent Care and ER after my 11 year old son had a bicycle accident and knocked out 3 of his adult teeth, made his other front tooth crooked and has another back tooth hanging by a thread! ( !!! )

Poor guy. We didn't find the teeth. His accident was on a dirt/gravel road in front of our house and all the gravel resembles teeth. After 20 minutes of search and thinking I'd found a tooth only to pick up yet another rock, we gave up. Maybe he swallowed them? I have no idea.

My husband is taking him to the dentist this morning.

Have any of you knocked out teeth before? That weren't able to save and put back in?

I'm wondering what the process is ahead of us and how long it may take.

He didn't eat dinner or breakfast. I'm afraid he's going to un clot the clots and start the bleeding again. Poor guy.

While at the urgent care, the check in guy and the dr both told him not to worry because they'd had their teeth knocked out too.

So - any advice on what to expect? What he may be able to eat in the upcoming days? What to avoid?

No advice to offer, but hugs to you all and the little guy.

Yuck.

Smoothies and anything that can be sucked through a straw would seem to be best. I have never knocked any of my own teeth out but have had a few players catch elbows, but there was never an issue of not finding the teeth.

I do know a couple guys with bridges - would seem like that's what would make the most sense, but I'm sure not a dentist.

Think of it this way, he's now 8.33% less likely to get a cavity.

My bike wipeout left me with only a split lip and a chipped tooth, none lost, so I can't offer much insight.

There was this kid at the school I worked at who had 4 silver front teeth. I assume silver - they were shiny. I never found out how he lost the originals. Rather disconcerting, and I believe it was before grills were popular ;)

Happened to one of the kids at Polo a couple of months ago. I'm not sure if they found the tooth or if they put in a fake one. It did take a few weeks but he's fine now.

huh...I honestly didnt know you could 'put them back' once they were out.

only ones Ive lost were 'removed', so no help here. my sympathies.

Just a 'so sorry' from me. Never had any teeth knocked out myself (knock enamel). Expensive as it might be, I'm guessing implants would be the best bet for the long run, and spoiling the child rotten best for the short.

I'm sorry to hear about that. I would guess implants, but I don't know since his mouth and jaw might still be growing and shifting. Ask lots of questions, and good luck.

Ouch! Sorry to hear this!

I knew someone who did this (off the bike right into the curb! :eek: ). They put the teeth in and they didn't keep for whatever reason. Then he got a bridge. Not the worse thing, but may need to be replaced/fixed once or twice in a lifetime. Good luck!

After he gets new teeth, perhaps training wheels might be in order...

Thanks for the kind words. He's doing okay - more afraid of the dentist and being made fun of in school then hurting. He didn't cry at all but did get upset when he looked in the mirror and saw just how many were missing. His hands got a scratched up and his leg a little bit but otherwise, nothing.

He literally landed on his mouth and knocked them all out. I think it's less painful then breaking them because of the nerve going with the tooth but I don't know for sure. I was just so surprised he wasn't in terrible pain as it looked awful.

We were advised not to give him anything cold because it would cause a lot of pain and no straws or he could suck out a blood clot and make it start bleeding again. yes. ick.

Maybe some Ensure or something for a day or two? They're still waiting to see the dentist.

I agree - this is his 2nd bike accident in as many years. Last time, without a helmet, he went to the ER in an ambulance. At least this time he was wearing a helmet.

I've never had my teeth knocked out.

No stitches needed. The pulled the dangling tooth as it was a baby tooth. Also found out he's got an impacted tooth from the fall that we hope comes back down or they'll have to pull that one too.

They don't do bridges or implants on someone so young so he'll have a "flipper" - bascially a retainer with teeth - for a few years. Can't eat with it but he'll be able to speak and smile with teeth.

He's back to school today and was eating regular food yesterday - just eating carefully and slowly. He's a growing boy and apparently my ideas of things he should be eating did not line up with his hunger level. The boy puts down food and just gets taller and not wider.

We go back to the dentist in a few weeks after his mouth has had a chance to heal.

Ugh. I'm glad things went ok with the dentist. It's a good thing kids are resilient!

Such a bummer this happened to him. I'm glad it wasn't horribly painful. But still. What a drag.

Age 16. Bashed out front teeth in a very minor car crash, pre-seat belt era. Root canals and caps which are still on 36 years later, no problem.

It happened the day after the orthodontist took off my braces. Of course.

OH that's just terrible. The DAY after?!!!
