A bit of History...

Holy cow! I was cleaning out some old boxes today, and I found something I've never seen before.

A hand painted bowl with my Grandfathers initials on it.

I nice bit of family history, and then I turn it over to see the inscription on the bottom:

As some of you know, My Grandfather was a structural engineer who helped build parts of Disneyland. One of his projects was the structural design for the Moonliner and the original bumpers for the Autopia cars.

This is obviously a thank you from the project, but I've got to know who "GS" is.

scaeagles 07-08-2010 08:17 PM

That is exceptionally cool.

Ghoulish Delight 07-08-2010 08:19 PM

Antiques Roadshow here you come!

BarTopDancer 07-08-2010 08:19 PM

That's really awesome.

A cousin of mine helped with the Matterhorn and original subs. I'll ask my mom if we have any records, might be able to find out who GS is.

ETA:

Here's what my mom said: his name was [removed/PMed to Moonie] and he was a structural engineer who designed or helped design the Mattehorn and submarine rides.

So no GS but how many structural engineers would have been a part of the Moonliner and Autopia. I bet you can figure it out.

I'm hoping it's from a Disney luminary but it could just as easily be from an old neighbor. Either way, it's a great find.

BarTopDancer 07-08-2010 09:23 PM

I found Gabriel Scognamillo who was the art director for Tomorrowland

Humm.. An art guy who worked on the look of Tomorrowland... That fits pretty well. Great find BTD!

flippyshark 07-09-2010 06:14 AM

Too cool!

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 07:13 AM

That's actually a pretty cool site in and of itself.

I wish I'd known five years ago that every Carrousel horse had its own name. We could have assigned everybody (not just Not Afraid) a specific horse, and the whole fun process would have taken hours! :D

Wow, this is beyond awesome. :snap:

Cynthia 07-09-2010 11:09 AM

How lovely, the site is very interesting as well, I love main street and feel like a cretin for never really attending to the window lettering before.

Carousel horses: my favorite is the one with the bell streamers, for years I would make a point to ride that particular one on or near my birthday-must find out what his name is.

Ghoulish Delight 07-09-2010 11:12 AM

Jingles. Jingles is the "lead horse" of King Arthur's Carousel.

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 11:28 AM

And the only one whose name I ever knew. I think I actually knew that each horse had a name, but didn't know where I could match those names with the look of each horse. Uh-oh, I feel a really difficult Mouse Adventure Quest coming on.

Ok - for the Fifty-Fifth, since we'll barely have a fifth of the people necessary to "take over" the carousel, what about a sequel where we each pick a horse whose name we like or has some significance to us, and we have to ride the carousel until each of us gets to ride on our chosen horse? (Pushing little kids off said horse to further this goal would not necessarily be allowed).

Ghoulish Delight 07-09-2010 11:30 AM

I think we all know which one BTD would like to ride

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 11:33 AM

BwaHaha, I'm liking this idea more and more. What if we each have to choose a horse who excites us sexually?!?

I can assure that I was perfectly aware that each horse had a name and knew how to learn those names.

The logistics of anything using that information were just too daunting. Too many people needing to ride (since it they can't all be seen easily from outside the ride) and too much incentive to disrupt the operation of the ride.

But it was a possibility returned to regularly.

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 12:00 PM

You could have just used those along the outer rim. I think quests requiring you to watch the carousel spin by you dozens of times are really fun!

Alex 07-09-2010 12:31 PM

Could have, but when doing that it was always easier to work with the actual appearance of the horses. Since the game is (or was when I was doing it) structured so you didn't have to know trivia to solve quests using the names would have required actually giving them to people.

I'm sure I could have come up with something that justified it, but I didn't.

I once had a quest that involved solving a puzzle using King Arthur Carrousel and then taking that solution and applying it to a new puzzle using King Triton in DCA, but it never made it to the big show.

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 12:44 PM

Too bad, that sounds like a clever twist.

Ok, I'm still all for each of us riding the horse that gives us a boner. Anyone else?

Not Afraid 07-09-2010 12:49 PM

I call Jingles 'cuz I got spurs that jingle jangle jingle.

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 01:05 PM

Aw, you already had Jingles!

Ok, yeah, he's yours - - that is, if you don't wanna branch out. Some other horses might be more fun to ride up and down and up and down on. You'll never know unless you try. ;)

Gemini Cricket 07-09-2010 01:07 PM

I like Red Devil. His tongue's sticking out. Love it.

Not Afraid 07-09-2010 01:08 PM

You know, Steve, I've been around. I've rode many a horse in my life. But, when it comes to picking the horse that's going to be "the one" for life, I have no doubt in my mind that it will be Jingles.

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 02:28 PM

I admire your equinogamy.

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 02:31 PM

And I'm gonna pick Hoot because I can call out, in my best Captain EO voice, "Hooter!" - throughout the ride ... and damn if that won't get me hard.

CoasterMatt 07-09-2010 03:23 PM

I like Screaming Eagle.

Cynthia 07-09-2010 03:27 PM

I can see that Jingles is well loved, always liked baby too . . but it is somewhat disconcerting to have a gilded putto gaping up my skirt, Champion is also pretty. For carnal thoughts Bruce has a familiar expression.

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 03:36 PM

Yeah, I gotta say, Bruce sure looks like he's enjoying himself.

Prudence 07-09-2010 04:59 PM

I (want to ride) Claudius.

Gemini Cricket 07-09-2010 05:49 PM

Ha ha. One of the horses is named Leo. MBC's favorite horse to ride? I think so. Yes, sir, I certainly do.

:D

innerSpaceman 07-09-2010 06:36 PM

ok, i'm semi-serious. This could be fun on the 55th.

I'm not big on horses, can I ride a princess instead?

Cadaverous Pallor 07-09-2010 11:05 PM

Emerald, my old rave name.

RStar 07-10-2010 05:29 PM

Ok, I think this thread has been derailed a bit. ;)

Of course the "GS" could stand for the Girl Scouts, but if we start talking cookies that will only derail it further.
:D

But, Moonie, that is such a cool find!!

Are you surprised by this?!?

Morrigoon 07-10-2010 08:58 PM

Ooh, Champion!

(it was a tough call, but Blue is on the inside ring, and I think someone already called Baby)

Not really. But what's with the horse fixation? Beastiality, perhaps? :D
