ElecTRONica

So who's going? The Laserman performer looks pretty cool. There's a video in this week's MP Update.

CoasterMatt 10-12-2010 01:25 PM

Looks like fun.

Hoping to fit a visit in, possibly when we visit the Empty Grave.

€uroMeinke 10-12-2010 04:15 PM

Hmmm - seems like they even have a live DJ this might be well worth checking out - hope it sticks long enough for me to get there.

Word on the street is that it will probably be around until January. I hope you can make it! I'd love to see some LoT reports on it since I probably won't be making it out before it's gone.

BarTopDancer 10-12-2010 04:52 PM

My friend saw it Friday night and said it was basically a Disneyfied dance club with Tron themes that will bring in the same audience as Glow Fest.

€uroMeinke 10-12-2010 04:53 PM

works for me

Except with mostly electronic and retro synth music. I already classify it as far superior, even though I've yet to go. :snap:

MouseWife 10-12-2010 05:54 PM

I did not partake in the festivities that are ElecTRONica. But, I did go.

I took my son up for Flynn's Arcade. He is a big fan of '80's arcade games. Me, too. So, just he and I went up.

We arrived early, and having never been to GlowFest, I had no clue what *could* happen. It was pretty bare where we waited for the arcade to open.

We had a lot of fun in the arcade {my son is in two pictures in the Orange County Register/online} and spent many dollars. Great that the tokens are only 25c.

I was there with my son. It wasn't until we were leaving that I saw all of the other fun!!! I did see a few *glowing* drinks inside the arcade...ooooo, pretty! But, it wasn't until we left the arcade that I saw a big freakin' party going on. Wow.

If the music is as good outside as it was inside the arcade, cool!!!

Oh, in talking with a Castmember, they said the arcade would be there through maybe April. May be different for the other festivities.

Alex 10-12-2010 05:55 PM

My understanding is that it is expected to be running at least into April (which is probably around when the DVD will release).

innerSpaceman 10-12-2010 06:59 PM

K gave it a thumbs-down review.

I'll paraphrase. There is no street party. The Hollywood street is cool looking, and has great Tron projections on the walls of the buildings, and certainly draws you in. But nothing is going on there. You have to get to the Monsters, Inc. area before any action goes on - and there's a D.J. booth and some go-go dancers, but you can only see the heads and shoulders of any of them.

There's a Tron spoiler reel playing in the Muppet theater, and 25cent 80's-era video games in the old food court that was open for DCA's first 6 months.

I didn't hear whether any overpriced crappy alcohol was being served, but the energy was decidedly low-key compared to GlowFest, if I read K right.

I don't know when I'll next be at the Resort to check it out myself, but it sounds like the jealous divas at Disney Entertainment couldn't even figure out what made GlowFest so popular and just copy those elements. It sounds instead like they took a successful concept and sucked most of the life out of it.

Typical.

Disney was wise to outsource brilliant animated films to Pixar. They should obviously continue to do the same with theme park entertainment. They've sucked at it for decades.

Alex 10-12-2010 07:37 PM

I don't have a dog in the race (since I'll never see this and never saw Glowfest) but so far that is the first review that I've seen comparing it unfavorably to Glowfest.

And yes, there's overpriced booze.

innerSpaceman 10-12-2010 10:20 PM

Well, i can tell you sight-unseen that if there's no street party on Hollywood Boulevard, it's by definition inferior to GlowFest.

well, my definition.

keith - SuPeR K! 10-12-2010 10:42 PM

I didn't get to check out laserman or the arcade or the sneak peak 3D movie clip because we were only had time to do a walk around and get a feel for the event, but my first impression was definitely meh. The whole of Hollywood Blvd looked cool and drew you in (The light cycle projections were neat!), but there was nothing going on on that street that remotely resembled a "party." Once we turned the corner and saw the club-like area they had set up, it just seemed smushed into that little area and very much like any other nightclub you could visit elsewhere. It was much darker than GlowFest, but then again the TRON theme is much darker so that was to be expected. Some people were dancing and the TRON outfits the cast members had on were definitely awesome, but it just didn't catch me. I felt no desire to dance. I saw no younger kids having the best time ever like you would often see at GlowFest.

I'm hoping my first impression was completely off and I will feel some sort of vibe next time I get a chance to check it out more thoroughly.

As for things I thought were better than GlowFest, the TRON theming definitely looks better during the daytime park hours than GlowFest did.

Chernabog 10-12-2010 11:37 PM

I really want to go there with $40 and play Flynns arcade all nite :)

Aww, Grumpy Gus! I went on Friday night, and the place was packed. No, no street party out front, you actually have to enter the party by passing under a Recognizer and into the "backlot" area. The "street" is foreshortened because of trolley construction, so they used the available space quite well. I spent about 3 hours in the party area, which is about 2:30 more than I'd spent at one time at Glowfest. Somehow, with '80's music inside Flynn's, and techno out front, I felt more comfortable grooving on the cute boys. ;) Flynn's is a very cool re-creation of the set from the original movie, complete with 25 cent Flynn's Arcade branded tokens. The best, cheapest souvenir I've ever gotten from Disney. The "spoiler reel," boy, do you have a gift for expectation reduction, is about a 10 minute presentation which uses the lighting and fan effects from the Muppet Theatre. EVERY TRAILER IN EVERY THEATRE SHOULD BE DONE THIS WAY. I loved it. The audience loved it. I loved the audience, and they loved me. I'd like to think. Hot, hot, Tron boy dancers, Laserman, a far-superior-to-Glowfest light show, 6 year-olds and booze, and horribly confused families trying to get to and from Monster's Inc. because they were booted out of DL for the Halloween party. What's not to love? I know you know how I felt about Glowfest, so I assume you'll dismiss what I have to say about elecTRONica, but give it a shot. Remember that a lot of the Glowfest body count was due to the fact that it was summer break, and try to hit elecTRONica on a non-school night. If nothing else, the geekboy attendance level is much higher for this one. FLYNN LIVES!

innerSpaceman 10-13-2010 11:38 AM

Sorry, but that's what I liked about GlowFest - and everything I've read about the impetus for ElecTRONica was they were trying to out GlowFest the success of GlowFest. Anyone's mileage may vary ... but if the things I thought were rad about GlowFest are entirely missing from ElecTRONica, I'm going to personally consider it a Fail.

If Disney Entertainment didn't want comparisons with GlowFest, perhaps they should have kept their jealous diva rants out of the fan press and not have then staged, oh, a dance party event in the Hollywood area of DCA.

Do I get uncurmudgeon points for my earlier raves about GlowFest and Bollywood dancers and the tons of things I've liked about Disneyland and other places and events over the years, or are varied opinions based on things-as-they-are only good for one-way curmudgeon status confirmation? :p

innerSpaceman 10-13-2010 11:40 AM

And now having read Gn2Dlnd's review, I'm mildly encouraged. I guess I'd like to see for myself, but I don't think I'll be at Disneyland again for quite a while.

I wish I knew you guys all more. I ran into someone who dances with LindyHop. We played a game of air hockey. He kicked my butt. But it was fun.

I only hope it isn't as crowded all of the time. I am considering going back this Friday as my sons AP expires the 24th {only good the Fridays}. Not sure, though. He does have school......

I do not even know how much money we spent on tokens. My son can last a long time on the games he is good at but the rest were all games we are used to NOT having to spend tokens on. :0)

Sorry, but you're so far in the hole, even if you wrote/rolled 10 consecutive Yahtzees, it still wouldn't bring you out of the negative. :p

Gemini Cricket 10-13-2010 06:05 PM

"Yahtzee!!!" (If you ever get a chance, play drunken Yahtzee. It's fun. Every time someone gets a Yahtzee or if you think they should have got a Yahtzee, you scream it outside in the yard so the neighbors can hear.)

The following is related:

"It's my turn to operate!"
"Operate?!"
Bzzt!
"Butterfingers!"
"It's Operation, the wacky doctor's game!"
"Take out his spare ribs for $100!"
"Oh, you'll never do that!"
Bzzt!

elecTRONica pix & videos

BarTopDancer 11-07-2010 12:13 PM

OMG ElecTRONica was awesome!!!!!!! Flynn's Arcade was so much fun and everything was 1 token (25 cents) including Air hockey and fooseball. It was awesome watching the action at the air hockey table. Little kids and adults all rotating through, picking sides. Everyone was lined up, people dropping tokens to line themselves up.

There was also a street party going on, but since I'm not a fan of loud or crowds we didn't stick around too much longer. It was weird having little kids running around that atmosphere and when the survey taker grabbed me she asked what my least favorite of it was I replied the little kids running around, I understand it's Disney and there will be kids but it seemed weird to have kids in a street party type atmosphere.

They just need a Coyote Ugly for you, right? ;)

Nah, I'll dance on any bar. You know that. :p

The last time I went to Vegas I didn't even set foot in there.

Cynthia 11-08-2010 12:08 PM

I won't be able to keep away as I just loved the old campy Tron, but I did think the MP vid rather lame, like they don't know that people standing around talking about fun is not as effective as showing people having fun . . . might have to see if my old silver spandex still fix (kidding-long gone) but still I will just have to go! SoCal folks let me know if you plan a trip, I don't always catch things on the boards.
