ElecTRONica
So who's going? The Laserman performer looks pretty cool. There's a video in this week's MP Update.
|
Looks like fun.
Hoping to fit a visit in, possibly when we visit the Empty Grave. |
Hmmm - seems like they even have a live DJ this might be well worth checking out - hope it sticks long enough for me to get there.

My friend saw it Friday night and said it was basically a Disneyfied dance club with Tron themes that will bring in the same audience as Glow Fest.

I did not partake in the festivities that are ElecTRONica. But, I did go.
I took my son up for Flynn's Arcade. He is a big fan of '80's arcade games. Me, too. So, just he and I went up. We arrived early, and having never been to GlowFest, I had no clue what *could* happen. It was pretty bare where we waited for the arcade to open. We had a lot of fun in the arcade {my son is in two pictures in the Orange County Register/online} and spent many dollars. Great that the tokens are only 25c. I was there with my son. It wasn't until we were leaving that I saw all of the other fun!!! I did see a few *glowing* drinks inside the arcade...ooooo, pretty! But, it wasn't until we left the arcade that I saw a big freakin' party going on. Wow. If the music is as good outside as it was inside the arcade, cool!!! Oh, in talking with a Castmember, they said the arcade would be there through maybe April. May be different for the other festivities. |
My understanding is that it is expected to be running at least into April (which is probably around when the DVD will release).

K gave it a thumbs-down review.
I'll paraphrase. There is no street party. The Hollywood street is cool looking, and has great Tron projections on the walls of the buildings, and certainly draws you in. But nothing is going on there. You have to get to the Monsters, Inc. area before any action goes on - and there's a D.J. booth and some go-go dancers, but you can only see the heads and shoulders of any of them. There's a Tron spoiler reel playing in the Muppet theater, and 25cent 80's-era video games in the old food court that was open for DCA's first 6 months. I didn't hear whether any overpriced crappy alcohol was being served, but the energy was decidedly low-key compared to GlowFest, if I read K right. I don't know when I'll next be at the Resort to check it out myself, but it sounds like the jealous divas at Disney Entertainment couldn't even figure out what made GlowFest so popular and just copy those elements. It sounds instead like they took a successful concept and sucked most of the life out of it. Typical. Disney was wise to outsource brilliant animated films to Pixar. They should obviously continue to do the same with theme park entertainment. They've sucked at it for decades. |
I don't have a dog in the race (since I'll never see this and never saw Glowfest) but so far that is the first review that I've seen comparing it unfavorably to Glowfest.
And yes, there's overpriced booze. |
Well, i can tell you sight-unseen that if there's no street party on Hollywood Boulevard, it's by definition inferior to GlowFest.
well, my definition. |
I didn't get to check out laserman or the arcade or the sneak peak 3D movie clip because we were only had time to do a walk around and get a feel for the event, but my first impression was definitely meh. The whole of Hollywood Blvd looked cool and drew you in (The light cycle projections were neat!), but there was nothing going on on that street that remotely resembled a "party." Once we turned the corner and saw the club-like area they had set up, it just seemed smushed into that little area and very much like any other nightclub you could visit elsewhere. It was much darker than GlowFest, but then again the TRON theme is much darker so that was to be expected. Some people were dancing and the TRON outfits the cast members had on were definitely awesome, but it just didn't catch me. I felt no desire to dance. I saw no younger kids having the best time ever like you would often see at GlowFest.
I'm hoping my first impression was completely off and I will feel some sort of vibe next time I get a chance to check it out more thoroughly. As for things I thought were better than GlowFest, the TRON theming definitely looks better during the daytime park hours than GlowFest did. |
I really want to go there with $40 and play Flynns arcade all nite :)

Sorry, but that's what I liked about GlowFest - and everything I've read about the impetus for ElecTRONica was they were trying to out GlowFest the success of GlowFest. Anyone's mileage may vary ... but if the things I thought were rad about GlowFest are entirely missing from ElecTRONica, I'm going to personally consider it a Fail.
If Disney Entertainment didn't want comparisons with GlowFest, perhaps they should have kept their jealous diva rants out of the fan press and not have then staged, oh, a dance party event in the Hollywood area of DCA. Do I get uncurmudgeon points for my earlier raves about GlowFest and Bollywood dancers and the tons of things I've liked about Disneyland and other places and events over the years, or are varied opinions based on things-as-they-are only good for one-way curmudgeon status confirmation? :p |
And now having read Gn2Dlnd's review, I'm mildly encouraged. I guess I'd like to see for myself, but I don't think I'll be at Disneyland again for quite a while.

I only hope it isn't as crowded all of the time. I am considering going back this Friday as my sons AP expires the 24th {only good the Fridays}. Not sure, though. He does have school...... I do not even know how much money we spent on tokens. My son can last a long time on the games he is good at but the rest were all games we are used to NOT having to spend tokens on. :0) |

"Yahtzee!!!" (If you ever get a chance, play drunken Yahtzee. It's fun. Every time someone gets a Yahtzee or if you think they should have got a Yahtzee, you scream it outside in the yard so the neighbors can hear.)
The following is related: "It's my turn to operate!" "Operate?!" Bzzt! "Butterfingers!" "It's Operation, the wacky doctor's game!" "Take out his spare ribs for $100!" "Oh, you'll never do that!" Bzzt! |

OMG ElecTRONica was awesome!!!!!!! Flynn's Arcade was so much fun and everything was 1 token (25 cents) including Air hockey and fooseball. It was awesome watching the action at the air hockey table. Little kids and adults all rotating through, picking sides. Everyone was lined up, people dropping tokens to line themselves up.
There was also a street party going on, but since I'm not a fan of loud or crowds we didn't stick around too much longer. It was weird having little kids running around that atmosphere and when the survey taker grabbed me she asked what my least favorite of it was I replied the little kids running around, I understand it's Disney and there will be kids but it seemed weird to have kids in a street party type atmosphere. |
They just need a Coyote Ugly for you, right? ;)

The last time I went to Vegas I didn't even set foot in there. |
I won't be able to keep away as I just loved the old campy Tron, but I did think the MP vid rather lame, like they don't know that people standing around talking about fun is not as effective as showing people having fun . . . might have to see if my old silver spandex still fix (kidding-long gone) but still I will just have to go! SoCal folks let me know if you plan a trip, I don't always catch things on the boards.
