Coachella 2011

The lineup is out. 2 names instantly jumped out at me. Animal Collective, Shpongle.

Seriously tempted. Seriously. Don't know if we can make it work, especially if they're only selling 3 day passes again, but if we can convince someone to take the kiddo for a couple days (Sunday, at first glance, looks skipable to me).

Kevy Baby 01-19-2011 12:43 PM

The lineup:

Kevy Baby 01-19-2011 12:44 PM

I'm sure that once Lisa sees that Kanye West is playing that she will be signing up.

CoasterMatt 01-19-2011 12:46 PM

Damn, at first I misread that as "Kanye West has a Stroke"...

Guess I shouldn't get my hopes up.

With very few exceptions, this lineup gets a 'meh' at best.

Not Afraid 01-19-2011 12:54 PM

Yeah, it's a total Meh for me.

I think Coachella is loosing it's edge.

Ghoulish Delight 01-19-2011 01:00 PM

Other than the 2 I listed, yeah. But neither of those 2 have any other shows scheduled at the moment, and they are 2 acts that have delivered a couple of the most amazing performances I've ever witnessed. So I'm still going to keep an eye on whether they'll be selling single day tickets (which, with the lineup being announced before tickets go on sale, is unlikely)

Stan4dSteph 01-19-2011 01:02 PM

Cool, Phantogram are playing! They're from Saratoga. :)

Morrigoon 01-19-2011 01:04 PM

Flogging Molly and Duran Duran, but they're on completely different days. I suppose I don't have too much to lament in my lack of ability to go anyway :)

BarTopDancer 01-19-2011 01:23 PM

How hard is it to get out of that parking lot? I have no interest in Coachella, but Stagecoach is the weekend before, or after and I really want to go.

But reading what a nightmare it is to get out with the one road in/out makes me more inclined to drive 8 hours, or fly to Phoenix to see the one headliner I really want to see.

Ghoulish Delight 01-19-2011 01:26 PM

It can be a nightmare, especially day 1 of the festival. The keys are to either leave before the headliner of the evening, or just chill and wait for things to clear up. If you're staying for the headliner, it'll already be past midnight by the time you're heading to your car, what's another hour of sitting around at that point? Just make sure you have plenty of gas BEFORE you park, and go to the bathroom BEFORE you get in your car.

There is more than 1 road in/out (2 main roads, plus if you know what you're doing you can head east or west to get to other routes.

BarTopDancer 01-19-2011 01:38 PM

Grrr. The headliner I want to see plays Saturday at Stagecoach and Sunday in AZ. Maybe I can just stalk the tour bus on the freeway.

mousepod 01-19-2011 09:05 PM

There are a few "oh my god" bands on the list - but not enough to make me want to do the whole festival. I'd rather see Suede, Wire, PJ Harvey and Rural Alberta Advantage headlining their own shows (OK, maybe not RAA, but you get what I mean).

Ghoulish Delight 01-19-2011 09:06 PM

Sadly the two acts on the list I'd want to see are unlikely to be doing any other shows in the area any time soon :(

While most Coachella bands don't play in LA or Orange County (for contractual reasons with the festival organizers), you'd be surprised how many of them play in Pomona the week before or after the desert clvsterfvck. Keep checking pollstar.com.

NirvanaMan 01-19-2011 09:41 PM

holy crap there are a lot of bands i want to see here. might have to finally brave the heat of the desert misery. Or just do what Mousepod said.

NirvanaMan 01-19-2011 09:42 PM

and does the font for the 'smaller' bands really have to be that fvcking tiny?

Not Afraid 01-19-2011 09:45 PM

Wire is the one band I'd really want to see. There are others I'd like to see again, but I'm surprised how many of them I've seen recently.

NirvanaMan 01-19-2011 09:48 PM

kings of leon, chemical brothers, flogging molly, arcade fire, mumford and sons
neon trees
strokes, gogel bordello

So how does this all work? I assume there are multiple stages (which could lead to challenges as bands you want to see may be playing at the same time).

Not Afraid 01-19-2011 10:07 PM

You just run from stage to stage or you make difficult choices.

There are 2 outdoor stages and 3 tents - Saraha the largest, Mohave the middle bear and Gobi the smallest

I am going to guess that many of the bands you mention are going to be on the 2 larger stages (although Chemical Brothers will probably be in the Sahara tent. Sahara tends to be he "dance" tent. Crystal Method, Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, Justice, Moby, Chemical Brothers, Dimitri in Paris, Dead Mouse and Madonna were all in Sahara.

€uroMeinke 01-19-2011 10:12 PM

Wire is pretty much the band I'd want to see, but I think they're been touring lately so there may be other opportunities. Also waiting to see what additions might come. Daft Punk is still rumored as is OMD.

mousepod 01-19-2011 10:20 PM

But where is Pulp?

Not Afraid 01-19-2011 10:27 PM

If I went, I'd probably see Interpol and She Wants Revenge (and wish I was really seeing Joy Division and Bauhaus) and I'd see Off (but I hope to see them before then). I love Flogging Molly live, but have seen them a ton of times. Same with Gogol Bordello.

I'm sure I'd have fun. I always do. Maybe if they sell single day tickets, we'll go for a day and rent a house for the rest of the time and hang out by the pool.

Not Afraid 01-19-2011 10:28 PM

Seeing Daft Punk again would put me over the top. That was one of the very BEST of the many Coachella experiences.

Yeah, where is Pulp?

NirvanaMan 01-20-2011 12:57 AM

Flogging molly and Mumford & Sons were two that I def wanted to try to see this year, so it's convenient.

Stan4dSteph 01-20-2011 07:39 AM

Flogging Molly are finally coming to this area. I'm excited to be seeing them again after more than 7 years over Prez Weekend.

And they were my favorite new music discovery last year. Their albums is ****ing gorgeous.

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 01-20-2011 10:21 AM

It might be fun to finally go and some of the more well known acts are the ones I'd be the most interested in seeing, and I'm a little in love with both The National and Phantogram.

The National
Kings of Leon
The Black Keys
Flogging Molly
Arcade Fire
Mumford & Sons
New Pornographers
the Strokes
PJ Harvey
Phantogram

But it's still seeing music with thousands of people in the ****ing deserts, which continues to not interest me at all. But with my love, my friends, and a house in Palm Springs...ponder,ponder.

€uroMeinke 01-20-2011 10:28 AM

If we want a house, we'd have to reserve it right away. Now that the line-up has been announced the hotels and other rentals will start booking quickly. Also, the prices often go up for this weekend.

Not Afraid 01-20-2011 10:31 AM

I sure wish I knew what my surgery date was. I'd really love to recover in the desert.

LSPoorEeyorick 01-20-2011 11:38 AM

I wish we knew if we'd have another income source by then! Because... Palm Springs, mmmmmm. (Unlikely we'd go to see Coachella, but we love a nice poolside weekend.)

€uroMeinke 01-20-2011 12:32 PM

...and our goto place is already booked

Cadaverous Pallor 01-20-2011 12:56 PM

All signs point to three-day passes only. :(

We'd totally visit peeps in PS though.
