Amazing Google Logo !

The Google Logo for today (Jules Verne's Birthday) is AWESOME !

Spoiler:

Pilot your own 20k Sub !! Search for the hidden treasure ! Avoid the squid !

Ghoulish Delight 02-07-2011 01:32 PM

Damn you for getting to the Vernian future before us!

Not Afraid 02-07-2011 01:32 PM

Maybe it's not Jules Verne's BD in America yet.

Alex 02-07-2011 03:13 PM

Vaguely nifty.

Sigh. Gotta wait...

Since you are already there, can you tell me what the weather is looking like for Tuesday?

innerSpaceman 02-07-2011 04:09 PM

Vaguely, Alex?

Ok, I don't check out Google daily. But that's the most Rad logo I've ever seen them do.

Kevy Baby 02-07-2011 04:23 PM

Huh? I only see the regular Google logo

BarTopDancer 02-07-2011 04:48 PM

OMG that's amazing! I sense another lost workday thanks to Google. I wonder how much productivity goes down when they do an interactive logo (like PacMan).

Don't forget the .au Kevy!

Ah - thanks

I hadn't seen Alex's post - must have missed it because of my post.

ETA: Cool. Can you line anything specific up in the windows - do the fishies spell out Google? I tried, but am extremely impatient.

Yes, vaguely. Kind of cool as a logo. Kind of dull as something to spend much time playing with.

lashbear 02-07-2011 09:36 PM

...but did you find the treasure chest ?

Cynthia 02-07-2011 11:00 PM

Yes I did, it's right next to the kraken. Did you find the spiral cut ham.

The image is only slightly wider than the logo so really all you can do is go up and down. Hard to miss anything.

lashbear 02-07-2011 11:47 PM

Spiral cut ham? I thought that was Leo !

Happy 146th Birthday Thomas Edison

Alex 02-11-2011 12:01 PM

Sometimes I wonder about the guy somewhere in the bowels of Google who is stuck trying to figure out how to get the automatic face fuzzying logic to work in StreetView and what he thinks about the fact that the most famous product of Google (at times) is from the guy who spends all of his time drawing new logos.

innerSpaceman 02-11-2011 12:42 PM

When I saw Edison's today, all I could think is what a raw deal he got compared to Verne.

lashbear 04-15-2011 12:15 AM

Good thing you are a day ahead, the birthday is April 16th. For us that means tomorrow. In any case, it's a cool thing, they did film it in Niles Canyon, too. :snap:

BarTopDancer 06-08-2011 09:54 PM

innerSpaceman 06-09-2011 05:49 AM

Beautiful tribute to Freddie Mercury today - Not sure how to find the direct link so you'll have to wait until today and see for yourselves !! :D

Gn2Dlnd 09-05-2011 06:42 AM

Today!? TODAY?!?

That's too long.

CoasterMatt 09-05-2011 09:20 AM

In the U.S., it won't be shown until tomorrow (because of Labor Day today) - but go to http://www.google.co.uk to be amazed today. Turn your speakers up, and press play.

Kevy Baby 09-05-2011 09:58 AM

Not a Google logo, but in honor of Freddie's 65th birthday, You Tube is supposed to have an entire concert available. So far, I have not found it, but I did find the official Freddie's 65th Channel

Not Afraid 09-05-2011 10:30 AM

Great Google logo. Funny, but that's the song that was in my head all day yesterday and I couldn't figure out why.

Gn2Dlnd 09-05-2011 11:06 AM

Freddie Mercury was, and remains, the only celebrity whose death caused me to bawl uncontrollably. I so identify him with my high school years, dating, and the world before AIDS. I loved Freddie Mercury. Goddam google logo made me cry again.

I think we'll be listening only to Queen in the kitchen today.

JWBear 09-05-2011 11:55 AM

It's hard to believe he'd be 65 now. I just can't wrap my brain around that.

Betty 09-06-2011 07:30 AM

I grew up listening to Queen. It was tradition that we would BLAST it while cleaning house. I mean BLAST IT! And then I would dance around the living room in some old white sheer nightgown robe thing with balloon sleeves (my Mom's old lingere or something guess - ha ha. It was like a fairy princess dress.)

I remember the house vibrating with We Will Rock You.

I LOVE the google doodle. That might be their best one yet.

Betty 09-07-2011 06:12 AM

I haven't listed to Fat Bottom Girls in years. I need to put that on a new CD for the car.

innerSpaceman 09-07-2011 10:39 AM

Not to be a pill, but the Google banners that are simply links to films (Chaplin was the other one) are, imo, lazy.

I think the most elaborate and successful one to date was the Jules Verne, which was an interactive version of the banner. But a link to a film? So what? No creativity in that, though the films themselves may be cute. (And, as I see it, it just so happens that the Chaplin film was a thousand times better than the Mercury film.)

Gn2Dlnd 09-14-2011 08:55 AM

You're entitled to your "as you see it," but the Chaplin film didn't make me cry.

innerSpaceman 09-14-2011 09:54 AM

But did that have anything to do with you being alive during Freddy Mercury's career and not yet alive during Chaplin's?

Regardless. The Google banner could link to a print of Star Wars, and I would still yawn. Ooooh, it's a link. WOW Google, Amazing!!!

innerSpaceman 09-24-2011 12:30 PM

September 24, 2011 - Today's interactive for the birthday of Jim Henson is one of the banners I'ma talkin' 'bout ... and applaud.

Cadaverous Pallor 09-24-2011 01:40 PM

There's no sound, right? I was a bit disappointed at that but it's nice anyway.

Betty 09-25-2011 05:39 AM

I thought it was great. If you see it in Chrome at least, it does a bit more when you click on the microphone button. But the funny part was when I was just sitting here doing nothing and suddenly the red guy on the end ate the guy next to him. It was so unexpected after them doing so little.

BarTopDancer 10-11-2011 10:16 PM

Say Gumby.
POKEY!

Morrigoon 10-20-2011 09:18 PM

Google has a Mary Blair tribute up

innerSpaceman 10-21-2011 09:26 AM

I was pleased to learn about that at the Mary Blair tribute last night, held at the Samuel Goldwyn. Alice Davis and her neice had some fantastic reminiscences about Mary. The clips shown were cool. The panel discussion was alright.

Best things I learned was that Mary Blair could barely see, and she would sometimes wear as many as five pairs of eyeglasses, one on top of the other - - on top of her contact lenses - to do her art work.

Oh, and the one thing I had no idea she worked on was costumes for the original production of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.

And she was painfully shy - but so obviously rad.

The video on the homepage loaded fine for me. Usually I have to click through a "social networking" page. Was it blocked for you?

Alex 11-01-2011 07:50 AM

It was weird, I never got a blocked message.

On load it was a picture of five pumpkins on the Google campus with a play icon over it makign it clear it was a video of some sort. On mouseover it indicated a YouTube video of some sort. When I clicked it, it just sat there for 10 seconds and then took me to a search results page.

I assume the video showed something like the pumpkins getting carved to say Google but that somehow my firewall was blocking something from YouTube.

Capt Jack 11-01-2011 09:06 AM

exactly what I got. I saw a picture of it later on with the carved out letters, but otherwise, just what you described.

I am sadly unimpressed

If by acquitted you mean, "Yeah, he totally did it and admitted it but because the man he murdered had boinked his wife and got her pregnant the jury decided it was justified and let him go," then yeah he was acquitted.

JWBear 04-09-2012 01:29 PM

All true. But since he was aquitted and not convicted, he therefore was not technically a murderer.

From the always reliable Wikipedia
Quote:

In 1874, while still living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Muybridge discovered that his young wife Flora had a lover, a Major Harry Larkyns. On 17 October, he sought out Larkyns and said, "Good evening, Major, my name is Muybridge and here's the answer to the letter you sent my wife." He shot and killed the major pointblank.[15]

Muybridge was tried for murder. His defense attorney pleaded insanity due to a head injury that Muybridge had sustained following his stagecoach accident. Friends testified that the accident had dramatically changed Muybridge's personality from genial and pleasant to unstable and erratic. The jury dismissed the insanity plea, but he was acquitted for "justifiable homicide". The episode interrupted his horse photography experiment, but not his relationship with Stanford, who paid for his criminal defense.[16]

After the acquittal, Muybridge left the United States for a time to take photographs in Central America, returning in 1877. Having divorced his wife and been awarded custody of their son, Florado Helios Muybridge (nicknamed "Floddie" by friends), as was customary at the time, he had the boy put in an orphanage while he was out of the country. Muybridge believed Larkyns to be the boy's biological father but, as an adult, Florado was reported as bearing a remarkable resemblance to Muybridge. Florado Muybridge worked as a ranch hand and gardener. In 1944 he was hit by a car in Sacramento and killed.
Fascinating! Leland Stanford paid for his defense.

Kevy Baby 04-09-2012 03:06 PM

Technically (and only by warped 1874/75 logic). He would have been convicted in modern times.

I'd say anybody who so expressly wants more bridge (what a boring game) is clearly insane and should be acquitted of all crimes.
