I Miss Swank Camp
Some may say I single-handedly ruined Swank Camp. That's hogwash.
I ruined Swank Cabinland. The lazy, clean, bedsoft, hottub, kitchen version of swank "camp" that was in a cabin. For wussies. :p And I didn't ruin it. But if it never happens again, it would be fine by me. Swank Camp, on the other hand, where we inhabit an actual swath of nature, is something that was pristine, fun, unusual, renewing, invigorating, lotsa work, beautiful gloriousness .... and I miss it. Is there any interest in a return to Swank Camp in Springtime??? |
blames and such aside (mostly because I have no idea what youre talking about) I'd be interested, depending on the wheres and whens and other details of course.
|
I liked Swank Camp too
|
It looked like you guys had a great time and I was jealous. But you're a bunch of wierd people from teh internets so I may be mistaken. Being from a double unemployed household we're stuck at home... at least for now.
|
We might be able to fit one into our schedule. Already planning a campout for this spring, but a group one could be fun again.
|
I'm interested. And I miss it too.
|
I'm looking for a fall camping trip. My spring is awfully full this year but if something were organized and I were free I'd be interested in sleeping under my car at it.
|
Alas, we have no gear.
|
You don't need gear to sleep under your car.

I miss it also. Would really love to go on one again!

And if it isn't going to rain hard then a tent is just extra crap to carry around. |
Taking Theo camping would be an awesome adventure. Definitely maybe.

I have extras - two extra pads and sleeping bags, extra tent (sm two person but it works). I'm sure we can find enough equipment.

MMMm have not camped in years, are you sure a cabin rental is out of the question?
|
|
It all depends on the boobs.

Aw, thanks guys, we'd be so grateful if anyone had a tent we could borrow.
And now that I think of it, we do have an air mattress, but it's auto-pumping. Is there electricity anywhere nearby campsites, usually? (I'll also need to use my CPAP, so either I'll have to figure out the battery function, or I'd need to plug in.) We're totally considering it - which is a first for both of us. Neither of us have ever been camping before! |
Some campgrounds have "accessible" campsites with a plug. I know McArthur-Burney does.
|
Is there a way to hook up a separate air pump to your mattress? We've got a battery powered one with multiple spouts (if that's the word).
I've never been at a campsite with an outlet before, and I have to say I'd rather we didn't... |
Yeah, there'd be no electricity at any campground I would consider "camping." (Though I'm sure swank camping would strike many camping purists as outlandishly landlubberish).
Battery power solves everything! |
Suggestion (though I can't commit so would only be tagging along to anything planned as an afterthought):
Jumbo Rocks at Joshua Tree |

Joshua Tree sounds great. Sometime in the fall? (gives everyone more time to plan).
|
Personally, I'm not partial to Joshua Tree. First off, it's a day trip for me that I take pretty often. But mostly, the campgrounds seem like you're in a parking lot. Perhaps it's just because of the stark desert environment. But not pleasant camping, imho.
BTW, if you're going to visit Joshua Tree, it's way best in the Spring when the cactus (and other) flowers are in bloom. |

Haven't camped there but Jumbo Rocks seemed like a place that avoided the "camping in a vast flat expanse" feeling. And every camp site comes with its mountain to climb.
|
I love Joshua Tree, but not for camping. I like more private places with trees. And water.
|
Ok, Joshua Tree shot down. Someone else's turn to name a place.
(Unless we're all just sitting around waiting for NA to organize things.) My next suggest to include trees and water will be Olympic National Park so definitely someone else's turn. |

Big Sur
San Simeon Mono Lake Mammoth Lakes |
When does Tioga Pass usually open each year (for Mono or Mammoth)?
Though not camping I believe there was a big group outing to the San Simeon area a couple years ago, right? |
Tioga pass depends on snowfall etc - it's not a set date. Looks like average is mid Mayish link
San Simeon was rated one of the top campgrounds so I threw that in there. |
How about San Onofre?
|
Intriguing suggestiong, delightfully local. Not sure how many trees it's got, but I'd be game.
Wasn't Disneyphile talking once about a place in the Angeles Nat'l Forest that had great group campgrounds as well? That might be another to consider. |

I'm not familiar with it, but I assume there's a reading for Kevy saying he was kidding?
|
Tree's and a chance of a Bear encounter!

I'm sure San Onofre is a wonderful place to stay, just not high on my list. Though there is some local sightseeing of giant boobs with flashing nipples (and despite what you might think, the picture is totally safe for work). |
You know - there are some great yellow post campsites up in Big Bear.
|
San Onofre is great if you like trains going by early in the morning about 20 feet from where you're camping and blowing their loud train whistle. There is also a little issue with critters molesting you while you sleep if you aren't in a tent.
|
Yeah, the general problem with beach camping is ocean on one side and some modern thoroughfare on the other. Both very close.
|
Montana de Oro.
I'll have 4 weeks of downtime to organize. But no arguing. |

We're camping in Idyllwild later this spring. It's gorgeous up there, and the nearby village has a lot of galleries and free art classes on weekends. But, it's still within just a couple hours of here, so probably not a desired spot for Swank Camp. Can't wait to see what plans you all come up with! Hopefully, we can fit it into our calendar. :) |
I'm in!
Please NOT the weekend of May 5! |
All times are GMT -7. The time now is 10:37 PM. |
