Trip Report: Iowa City, Iowa

j/k. I wouldn't subject you.

Just know we awoke to the sound of many robins singing. You know why they were singing? Worms. Thousands of worms, worms, worms on the sidewalks. A worm obstacle course.

Then, later that day, crispy worm bodies. Thousands of crispy worm bodies.

Lol! Worm carcasses and happy birdies!

Stan4dSteph 04-10-2011 08:34 PM

We ran through that yesterday. It was kind of gross. The thought that went through my head was, "thank God I'm not a Buddhist because I am probably killing a lot of worms right now."

It makes me think of a slip and slide.

That would have been my worst childhood nightmare coming true!

And here I was expecting to hear about the weather in Iowa.....

Ghoulish Delight 04-12-2011 08:06 AM

During this winter's wet weather, we were "fortunate" enough to never have a problem with ants in the house. I say "fortunate" because instead we got worms. WORMS!

I'll take ants.

blueerica 04-12-2011 08:55 AM

Not too many worms here in Salt Lake... yet.

Worms in the house..... *thud*

OMG OMG OMG I would die.

True worm story:
Spoiler:
My late beagle Suzy, when she was a puppy, once ate every worm she saw on a walk after a rain. There was no stopping her. Believe me, we turned around for home as soon as she started.

We get home. The family is sitting down to dinner. Suzy begins to retch and retch and ... up come a couple of worms, up come some more. And some of them were wriggling.

I pointed to the mess and hissed to my kids, just like the Wicked Queen in "Snow White" did with the hunter. "Get them!" I said. "Clean that up!"

You're welcome. :)

"There were worms
On the hills
But I never heard them squishing . . ."

Iowa, get it?

There are blocks on my morning dog walk that are a long hopscotch course between the worm bodies and goose splatterings from the flyovers. Could be some egret and heron poop mixed in. Mostly goose.

My labrador used to have a fondness for snails. For some reason, he gave them up.

We buy worms 1,000 at a time - the dragons love them

Good thing you already know how to kill them.

Morrigoon 04-13-2011 12:48 AM

Dude Strangler... the Music Man reference? Awesome.

Apparently 3894 decided to give Iowa a try :P

Cadaverous Pallor 04-13-2011 08:57 AM

Wasn't Music Man in Gary Indiana Gary In-diana Gary Indiaaaaanaaaaa?

innerSpaceman 04-13-2011 09:44 AM

If I recall, that was just a song tribute to the great city of Gary. But the location of all the action in the show is in Iowa. Worms and all.

Not Afraid 04-13-2011 10:08 AM

Every time I hear the "Gary, Indiana" song, I start singing the "Detroit" song from The Happiest Milllionaire.

And I'm sure she's a sadder but wiser girl for the experience.

Music Man takes place in River City, Iowa--where there's trouble. Gary, Indiana is where Professor Hill supposedly went to conservatory. Marian the Librarian's lisping little brother sings about it for reasons that escape me.

3894 04-13-2011 02:04 PM

River City is the real-life Mason City, Iowa. Hubbo is originally from the area.

Here's the Meredith Wilson statue in the town square.

I call the role of Eulalie Mackechnie Shinn in the LoT production of "The Music Man".
