PotterMore?
Does anyone care to get in on the great WTF is Pottermore debate?
Personally, I'm going with a World Of Warcraft style game set in the Potter universe. Created by Blizzard under the Titan code name. But I'm known for picking long shots...... |
Harry Potter MMORPG is the frontrunner.

I thought it was supposed to be some venue for all the other stories she's written about the HP characters but never published.
|
If it is MMOPRPG I hope they handle the central problem better than Lord of the Rings and Star Trek did.
Namely that when dropped into a universe where the main characters are very well known, if you aren't playing one of those main characters you know you're just off on the fringe of things and not important to the universe. With WoW, the mythology isn't well known so everybody can feel like they're in the middle of the story. If I'm not Harry Potter in the Potter universe then I'm not in the story. |
I know there have been Harry Potter video games, but I can't imagine J.K. Rowling, the lady who brought kids back to reading, personally announcing a WoW brainsuck. Her loyal readers, and the people who write fan fiction and people Mugglenet aren't going to be interested in that.
My guesses are 1) she write a new book that goes back in time to, e.g., the founding of Hogwarts, to explain the cosmology of her world a little better. (Witches and Jesus?) or 2) a Wikipedia-like site that allows readers to write the encyclopedia that she no longer wants to write herself. |
I think it will be the online encyclopedia.
Other than that, I don't really care. I never read the books, and the movies are ok, less of a snoozefest for me that the Lord of The Rings were. And don't snub me for my opinion, their just not my cup of tea. I'm not saying they're bad, just not what I enjoy.... |

I'm rather disappointed it wasn't something more, but I bet this will be a wonderful site for kids, and inspire them to keep reading, not just watch the movies, etc.
|
I heard this somehow allows you to write your own story and have the chance to get your ideas officially into the Harry Potter world. That's pretty awesome. What a nod to the mighty HP fanfic world.

Even I steer clear of fanfic.

Grrrrr. So it looks like the Potter books will be on the Google books platform. Which works with all ereaders BUT the Kindle. And of course I have a Kindle. Grrrrr.
|
Amazon is disagreeing with that story going around:

Well I hope amazon is right. I don't feel like schlepping 600 page books around anymore.
|
FINALLY you can purchase the books as ebooks on all platforms. And you can get the whole set for a 10% discount. I had finally broken down and downloaded pdf's off the internet but you can't change the font and I'm blind as a bat.
|
I'm not a fan of how these are being sold only on the Pottermore site. If you want to sell me something make it easier not more cumbersome.
Plus since I have no real interest in getting them electronically at the moment anyway I'll be happy to give this one a pass for now. |
It is a little control freakish to have to go to Pottermore then transfer them to Amazon or whatever reader you use. It wasn't a massive problem just a hassle. Like you can buy all the books as a set - but you have to transfer them one at a time. It only takes a few seconds to do so but it's annoying.
|
When you have millions of slavish fans, making them jump through a few hoops isn't such a big deal.
|
I wonder if I could get the UK versions in eBook form. That would at least make the eBooks more interesting.
|
Weirdly, selling directly to your customers without letting a middle man jack up the prices or set arcane product requirements is, in other contexts, called a farmers market and not jumping through hoops.
|
A farmer's market is a collection of said farmers. If every farmer required that you drive right up to their individual farm to buy their food, that would be jumping through hoops.
|
Why are the farmers sad?
...Oh, said. Right. |
I want to hear the Stephen Fry versions of the Potter audio books, but they are not easily (or cheaply) obtained here in the US. (Even friends of mine who are adept at *ahem* "finding" things have had trouble with this one.)
|
You just want to hear him doing Hermione, don't you?

Pottermore just let me in. Still not yet live, or maybe its the browser I'm using at work (ahem), work, heh.
Back to Flippy's query, anyone have the Stephen Fry audio of the Potter novels? |
