Random skill you've always wanted to learn (but haven't)

Always wanted to learn wood carving.

You?

CoasterMatt 10-12-2011 11:59 PM

Well, I've picked up most of the random skills I wanted to... throwing axes and knives is always fun at parties, but I still haven't learned to unicycle.

innerSpaceman 10-13-2011 09:07 AM

Saxophone.

katiesue 10-13-2011 09:48 AM

Surfing

Snowflake 10-13-2011 10:10 AM

Stained glassmaking
quilting

and how to make mole

Wouldn't it be the momma and poppa moles that need that "skill"?

flippyshark 10-13-2011 11:49 AM

I bought a violin (at Target) and a couple of "how to play" books. I quickly arrived at the conclusion that learning the violin really requires live human instruction. That was a couple of years ago. The violin (a Yamaha Educational violin) makes good decor.

I was Suzuki parent for my daughter until she quickly outstripped the need for me. My initial impression was that if I'd known how easy that sh*t was, I never would have gone to law school. Among other things, I taught myself Hava Nagila, which I envisioned playing over and over again at the Alzheimer's wing of a Jewish nursing home. Sadly, without the familial call to duty in play, my self study soon fell by the wayside.

My attempt to teach myself clarinet years earlier quickly went nowhere.

Betty 10-13-2011 02:23 PM

I'd like to know how to sew.

I'm glad you clarified because I thought you meant the animal and was equally confused.

I think that intrigues me more than anything else Ive read here.

Kevy Baby 10-13-2011 04:22 PM

I've always wanted to learn how to properly relax - the concept seems to elude me.

Prudence 10-13-2011 06:11 PM

Oh man, the list is probably endless. All the languages I want to learn (including ancient), also woodworking, metal smithing, lace making, wine making, beer brewing, bonsai, every instrument in the universe, animal husbandry, car repair (especially rebuilding carburetors!), race car driving, diving, SCUBA, piloting boats and airplanes....

BarTopDancer 10-13-2011 06:20 PM

SCUBA is at the top of my list.

SCUBA is awesome, and wasn't as hard as I had expected.

Morrigoon 10-13-2011 07:16 PM

I think I've shared this one before... but I've always wanted to learn to play the harp.

Cadaverous Pallor 10-13-2011 08:44 PM

Acoustic guitar (sigh), singing lessons, drums.

Sewing and crocheting more than my childhood lessons.

Dance, starting with modern (so I can dance like Michael Jackson) and perhaps ballroom.

These are the first to pop to mind but there are dozens more.

Chernabog 10-13-2011 09:22 PM

Cunnilingus.

....

....

KIDDING! (Jeez.)

Prudence 10-14-2011 05:16 AM

Oh yeah! Ballroom dancing! And archery. And fencing. And target shooting. And waterskiing. And cross-country skiing.

Betty 10-14-2011 06:16 AM

Home brewing isn't any harder than cooking. I hope you try it.

Motorboat Cruiser 10-14-2011 08:49 AM

Never been able to dance or hit a baseball. Would like to learn to do both.

Gn2Dlnd 10-24-2011 12:01 AM

Roller skating. I suck at it.

Humm... Never, Check, Check, Check, Check, and highly overrated.

CoasterMatt 10-26-2011 08:13 PM

I need to yodel.

Alex 10-26-2011 09:42 PM

I'd like to learn how to touch terra cotta without getting squicked out.

Ghoulish Delight 10-26-2011 10:28 PM

I get that too. And suede.

CoasterMatt 10-26-2011 10:30 PM

Really? Suede? I love the feel of suede. I think suede underwear would feel great.

I have suedey balls, so I wouldn't notice. (Alec Baldwin/Ben & Jerry reference)

I've always wanted to learn a musical instrument but never could get the hang of it. It takes way too much time.

Morrigoon 10-27-2011 12:48 AM

Have you tried the triangle?

No. You don't. No one does.

In fact some days the only thing that keeps me from going postal is knowing that it's not possible for any one person to yodel and play the bagpipes at the same time.

Morrigoon 10-27-2011 11:05 AM

Yet, they could play bagpipes along with a John Denver CD... and he can yodel.

nah, it only takes time if you want to be good at it. if you dont really care what it sounds like, it can be a lot of fun

:D

That sounds like a challenge to me...

Actually that wasn't yodeling, it was just a practical example of the Doppler effect while he was screaming.

Morrigoon 10-27-2011 03:07 PM

You know, technically I believe that while you blow into bagpipes to fill them, the playing comes from squeezing the bag, so in theory, you could fill up the bag with air, then take your mouth off the mouthpiece and squeeze and play while yodeling.

So there.

If true, You are dead to me.

Ghoulish Delight 10-27-2011 03:50 PM

So, in conclusion, Morigoon REALLY wants to see Moonie go postal.

alphabassettgrrl 10-27-2011 09:44 PM

Matt, you've got to post video once you've mastered that. Bagpipes plus yodeling... yeah. I bet that would be awesome!

Though I think one of the pipes requires blowing into it to play- you get the harmony ones (three pipes? Chanter, drone and ?) from the bag but I think the melody one doesn't come from the bag.

Dangit. Now I have to research bagpipes.

I read that wrong. I am not going to sleep well.

Morrigoon 10-27-2011 11:06 PM

Haha... ABG seems even more determined to get Moonie to climb a belltower than I am! =P

CoasterMatt 10-28-2011 10:06 AM

A foot pedal air pump and I can make music with bagpipes- Gonna get a demo next week.

Moonliner 10-28-2011 10:23 AM

And with spare clips I can double or treble the fun.

Plus I challenge your central thesis. There are no conditions foot pedal or otherwise under which "music" comes from a bagpipe.
