Good Deals

It's that time of year. Black Friday is neigh.

So what deals have you found?

How about Blu-Ray movies for under $10?

CoasterMatt 11-22-2011 06:16 PM

I'm spending some priceless time with my family on Thursday, then I'm gonna sleep in and casually stroll to the mall on Friday- pointing and laughing all the way.

I avoid Black Friday like the plague.

katiesue 11-22-2011 07:29 PM

I love it! Half the time we don't buy much but people go bonkers. It's our entertainment for the year.

Do you know something better? I haven't found a stream yet that can match a blu-ray for sound and picture quality.

Alex 11-22-2011 10:14 PM

No, but I haven't found a blu-ray good enough for me to hassle with a disc when the little bit lesser picture quality of streaming is good enough for me.

That said, Blu-Ray as a format isn't performing that well.

Snowflake 11-22-2011 10:52 PM

Interesting line up of classics on sale.

If Bluray isn't selling the units that DVD is, my guess is the cost. I'm still not willing to shell out $40-50 to own a movie. I still haven't upgraded in my bedroom, and frankly can't see much of a difference from upconverted DVD from Bluray anyway. So right now, I purchase the DVD, or the mutli pack when it first comes out (usually only $3-4 more than the DVD only price).

Morrigoon 11-23-2011 01:47 AM

Yeah, the pricing on Blu-ray is just a touch higher than most people are willing to spend freely. Especially when the same player can handle a DVD.

Which is why the < $10 Blu-rays are a good deal. I picked up Logans Run, love that movie.

Makes sense to me. I've done direct comparisons on various movies between blu-ray, DVD, Netfix streaming and Vudu. In the MoonCave blu-ray is the clear winner. So for me I like the Blu.

However, I do tend to think of the disks as packaging. I've started ripping them to my media server for easier viewing (removing previews and such) and keeping the disks primarily as a backup.

Not the collected works of Monty Python?!

Kevy Baby 11-23-2011 01:37 PM

It wasn't on the list

Not Afraid 11-23-2011 08:17 PM

No.

CoasterMatt 11-23-2011 10:42 PM

Where are you buying blurays where it's 40-50 bucks for a movie?!?

Kevy Baby 11-24-2011 12:28 PM

This place has some great deals tomorrow.

RStar 11-25-2011 09:47 AM

Yeah, you can buy canned beans there for 99 cents that retail for 79 cents at Albertsons.....

Although, I do admit shopping there for certain things that are a good deal. Like a loaf of texas toast thick cut bread that I use for french toast. IF you can find it anywhere else, you'll spend $4. So I'll but 3 or 4 loaves and put them in the freezer....

Ghoulish Delight 11-28-2011 11:27 AM

Xbox 360 slim 4GB with Kinect $200. That's ~$200 off the retail price for the console and Kinect separately, $100 off the usual price of the bundle. Great deal, especially if you're someone who doesn't expect to store media or download playable content onto the box. Of course, there are ways to expand on that 4GB memory (you can get a 16GB USB expansion, an official 250Gb or 320Gb Xbox drive, or if you've got enough tech savy modify an off-the-shelf 250Gb or 320Gb drive for much cheaper).

That's a seriously unbeatable deal if you want in on the Kinect.

Alex 11-28-2011 12:04 PM

And, to add it to the Roku talk in the other thread, it can stream Netflix with a Gold X-Box Live account.

I just took the Roku out of our system as I switched from Wii to X-Box and it is now equally convenient.

Ghoulish Delight 11-28-2011 12:37 PM

Damn, katiesue just noticed it's now out of stock. Should have figured that price was too good to last. Sorry for the tease.

katiesue 11-28-2011 01:07 PM

Alex - we have a roku too. The xbox Gold account has a fee right? So I think for us we just keep the roku going?

Alex 11-28-2011 01:16 PM

Yes, there's a fee ($5/month, I think). I wouldn't get the Gold account just for Netflix (since I already had the Roku) but since I was getting the account anyway, the Roku became redundant (and I like having the voice commands option).

Ghoulish Delight 11-28-2011 01:52 PM

From what I've seen it's pretty easy to get a discount on the gold account ($50 for a year seems to be the deal I've seen around).

Moonliner 11-28-2011 01:58 PM

$100 of the dyson animal ball vac at costco.

katiesue 11-28-2011 02:03 PM

So what does the gold box get me? I'm guessing it's more for real gamers? Madz will play a couple of dance games etc but I don't see her turning into an actual gamer. (sorry for all the questions you wouldn't know I used to actually work at a gaming company would you?)

Ghoulish Delight 11-28-2011 02:29 PM

Gold membership gives you access to online gaming and media content. That includes online multiplayer, streaming video (hulu, netflix, etc.) use of Kinect for webcam chat, and some other media stuff.

Here's a list

ETA: Found a Year + 1 month subscription card for $46.89, which is $3.60/month

katiesue 11-28-2011 03:40 PM

Thanks - I'm guessing it's not something we need - at least to start with. See how long she goes with the gaming mode.

katiesue 12-04-2011 02:58 PM

The Disneyland Kinect Game is on sale at Target this week. I've been looking for it to go on sale and so far this is the only one I've seen.

:D Buy several! :D

katiesue 12-04-2011 04:19 PM

We're really excited to play it.

Ghoulish Delight 12-04-2011 07:02 PM

Want it, might have to wait a bit having just shelled out for the system and one game.

CoasterMatt 12-04-2011 07:15 PM

Borrowlenses.com has used Nikon D300 camera bodies for $675 - the going rate for them on ebay is around $1000-1200.

Ghoulish Delight 12-23-2011 07:20 PM

Just picked up Disneyland Kinect today at Best Buy, $25
