XKCD

I just wanted to post that this year's XKCD April fools comic is epic.

Cadaverous Pallor 04-02-2012 04:30 PM

Heh, I learned something new today.

Moonliner 04-02-2012 04:34 PM

And what was that?

Ghoulish Delight 04-02-2012 04:44 PM

Anyone have the full set anywhere? I only have 4 browsers readily available and don't feel like installing/hunting down more.

Moonliner 04-02-2012 04:48 PM

You'll need a lot more than that. There are different ones based on your domain (.mil, .edu), some states and countries, specific schools, mobile browsers, and lord knows what else. Not to mention that at least some of them change depending on your screen size..... The XKCD forms seem to have the most comprehensive list.

Ghoulish Delight 04-02-2012 04:57 PM

Holy crap, he must have started last year!

BarTopDancer 04-02-2012 07:02 PM

I'm either dense or Chrome is broked cause it just shows me a puzzle piece.

LSPoorEeyorick 04-02-2012 08:25 PM

Does the puzzle piece say anything? A ton of the variations are puzzle-piece jokes. (The Opera one is my favorite.)

Is your javascript disabled for any reason?

LSPoorEeyorick 04-02-2012 08:26 PM

BTW, I think the best collection of links is on Reddit.

In XKCD font it says "Chrome is looking for this piece [piece is clearly a a center]. Have you seen it? Chrome thinks it links up with a corner."

LSPoorEeyorick 04-03-2012 10:08 AM

Heh.

Try another browser! It's different for each one. It's also location-based.

€uroMeinke 04-03-2012 12:33 PM

I got what BTD got.

And still don't get it

lashbear 04-03-2012 04:14 PM

My Chrome and IE both show up a different panel comic. One is a tortoise joke and one is about a snake.

Alex 04-03-2012 05:04 PM

If you got the snake, play with resizing your window.

Stan4dSteph 04-04-2012 01:38 PM

At work, I get a newspaper with the headline, "Scientists Create Life in Lab," with a caption under a drawing that reads, "The trick was f***in'."

Ooh! Yeah you. That's a rare one. It's based on your domain. I'd guess you are at some type of lab, research facility or university.

Sadly, there is not a special one for linking via LoT.

Prudence 04-06-2012 09:27 AM

I got DC-related ones at work. Shock and amazement, I know. Abraham Lincolon and nanobots in one browser, the one about east coasters being earthquake wusses and west coasters being hurricane wusses in the other.

JWBear 09-19-2012 09:35 PM

Today' XKCD comic is, in many meanings of the word, epic.

According to this site:
Quote:

At 165888 x 79872 pixels, or 1.3 terapixels, the image would fill the screens of 4212 iPads with retina displays in an 81 x 52 grid. The grayscale image is 12.3 gigabytes in size. If it was printed at a size big enough that you could see the people, it would cover a football end zone.
It's "click and drag" viewable. Have fun.

Morrigoon 09-19-2012 11:37 PM

I made the mistake of following the Mario tunnel. Eventually had to give up.

Moonliner 09-20-2012 03:45 AM

Given how over the top this one is and the fact that the next comic is #1111, there is speculation it's a swan song.

lashbear 09-20-2012 05:33 AM

Over the top, and I was over it in about a minute.

Alex 09-20-2012 06:28 AM

There's a page out there that converts it into a google maps interface with scroll zoom. Must faster.

The balloon guy shows up again near the extreem right edge, saying something to the effect of "I wonder where I'll go now." Could be a hint.

Ghoulish Delight 09-20-2012 08:47 AM

I doubt it's anything of the sort. Dude is just obsessive. Hardly his first large scale, work intensive comic. Hell, just look at the amount of effort he puts into the calculations he does for the weekly what-if's. No way he's done.

Alex 09-20-2012 08:49 AM

Here's the zoomable version:

Apparently that was a call back to his very first strip.

Moonliner 04-10-2013 05:11 PM

Can I just say how awsome I think XKCD "Time" is?

Alex 04-10-2013 09:52 PM

You can say it.

Kevy Baby 04-11-2013 06:56 PM

"It"

Moonliner 05-21-2013 05:02 PM

Based on the current XKCD

Anyone want to play?

Ghoulish Delight 05-21-2013 05:05 PM

I messed with it. Is it cheating to navigate around a little, use google, and get it right every time?

It's possible I might have done that, just a little. :D

Would you like to have a challenge round with no movement and no Google?

Ghoulish Delight 05-21-2013 05:31 PM

Yeah, I'm useless

I was just plain lucky on 'C' and then followed that up by guessing a tunnel I've driven through in the past month was in Germany.

Anyone else care to play? (This one kicked my ass)

Alex 05-21-2013 08:34 PM

There aren't really rules. Different people seem to allow everythign from nothing to full navigation for however long and full use of Google. So long as the rules are shared before challenging, all's cool.

My general style of play is no use of anything other than what is in that window. I can move around but only for about a minute before I have to start making my guess.

Kind of kicked my ass too, but not nearly so much as it kicked yours.

Alex 05-21-2013 08:50 PM

And to return the favor.

My challenge (not a great effort, but but saved by really nailing one)

No Google, no movement other than spinning.

Beat you. With some horrible guesses

I'm assuming that "no moving" at least allows a 360?

Spoiler:
Dang, was on you until Alaska fooled me twice in a row.
So did you know where Hakone was, or did you just find it? I gave up zooming in and scrolling and guessed northward based on people being bundled up.

Alex 05-21-2013 10:44 PM

Spoiler:
I knew that Hakone is between Tokyo and Osaka (remembered the signs from when on the bullet train), never saw it on the map, just got even luckier in my guessing.

Ghoulish Delight 05-22-2013 09:59 AM

New challenge. Rotation and zooming only.

Came out ahead but slightly unfair on my part. I've had C before. Not just kind of that place but that exact starting location.

So I guess the selections aren't entirely random from all of Google streetview.

Alex 05-22-2013 06:56 PM

And my challenge back for the day. Sadly, being able to read all of the signs in A didn't help a lick.

Neither did not being able to read them

I did really poorly that time. Yikes.

All my guesses were on the correct continent!

Ah, you made the mistake I almost did on C.

I was initially thinking Southwest too, but then I noticed that all the cars are parked on the left side of the street.

I win again! Extreme luck though.

Spoiler:
C looked like American cars, they were driving on the right side and while there was a middle yellow line there was no yellow on the right edge of the road. So I was pretty sure it was Mexico. The road quality and cars pointed me to northern Mexico so I clicked randomly up there and was only 20 km off.

Also, for A I recognized the Bulgarian flag on one of the houses. Fortunately it was actually a house in Bulgaria. I almost picked something in Italy before I remembered the color order of the Italian flag.

For E, the one with all the cars in the square, the Formula 1 car said "Estonia" on the side in Cyrillic. So I hoped it was somewhat local. Sadly, it wasn't.

Ghoulish Delight 05-23-2013 02:27 PM

This one is worth doing for the first one alone, but I'm guessing Alex is going to be pretty spot on.

Spoiler:
D - I knew it wasn't Anchroage, but thought it seemed like too big a town to be Juneau. Shows what I know about Juneau

Lost by 33 points.

By the way, are we using the the "zoom" feature (which does not move you) or not?

Alex 05-23-2013 05:50 PM

I hadn't been (only because I didn't know I could) but Greg said "rotation and zooming only" above so I have been.

Comments as I go just to make myself verbalize what clues I'm running off of.

Spoiler:

A. Yes, I know it is Catherine's Palace. Never been there but know it. Unfortunately I have no idea where in St. Petersburg it would be. But because of your comment I didn't settle for just picking a random spot in the city and considering it good enough. I zoomed in and started scrolling all the big parks on the map. Fortunatley got relatively lucky to notice something called Ekaterininskiy Park pretty quickly.

Nailed it to 0.015km.

B. Car driving on the left. Asians in the parking lot so probably Japan. Zoom in on that sign and yep, Japanese. Obviously coastal and mountainous which isn't much help. Based on the shadow direction (since being in Japan shadows probably tend to point northward especially since it appears to be a colder time of year) I'm going to guess it is probably an eastern coastline. But that isn't very reliable for many reasons.

So I'll go random east coast spot north of Tokyo.

And I hit it slightly closer than GD. 383km vs. 459km.

C. First thing is a Swedish flag. Signs on food truck in Scandinavian language make me confident is assuming it is actually in Sweden. Can't really see anything to help me more than that so I'll just pick a random spot on the coast. Since the weather looks nicer (though I honestly have no idea what the weather is like in various parts of Sweden during the summer) I'll go south of Stockholm.

And I miss by 262 km.

D. Well this isn't fair. Pretty sure it is Juneau since A) the store makes it clear it is Alaska and B) I've been to the biggest cities in Alaska and it doesn't really look like Fairbanks, Anchorage, or Kodiak.

Also, that street is just ringing a faint bell so I'm wondering if it is in the area we walked when were there for the Disney cruise.

Zoom in on Juneau first, yep. Egan is main drag along water. There's Egan and Main.

0.009km.

E. Ok, bridge over water. Sign in Spanish. People look more South America than Spain. Mexico or Chile (the only Spanish speaking countries I seem to ever get).

Cars are nicer so I'd guess it is nearer a city or resort area. Can't quite tell if the water looks coastal or more like a big lake. Leaning towards edge of Yucatan region due to the trees.

No. That sign doesn't say "prohibido" it says "proibito." So either it is misspelled or more likely is actually Portuguese and so this is Brazil (I usually rely on extra h's in what looks like Spanish to know I'm looking at Portuguese, so funny that it is a missing h that clues me in if I'm right). Unfortunately that isn't really an improvement in narrowing down space.

No idea where I'd find a mesa like formation in Brazil. So now just to guess something within a couple hundred miles of a big city.

Quick scan shows a lake northwest of Sao Paolo with a bridge over it. Good enough for me.

And it turns out it was another lake about 520km ENE from there but in that same circle around Sao Paulo so I'm pleased with myself.

Result

Ghoulish Delight 05-23-2013 08:20 PM

Hmm, I too shall "live tweet"...

Challenge
Spoiler:

A - cars look Eurpoey. Chuch looks Eurpoey. Lots of peaked roofs, so northern Europey. Huge building in the background looks industrial, so how about Gemany. Sure, northern Germany near the coast....

One country off, darn.

B - Fvck that's cold. Umm, can't make out the flags. Maybe some sort of science post near the pole? Greenland?

Oooooh, Svlabard, of course!

C - Howthefeckshouldiknow. One lane road, no clue on driving side. Trees seem pretty northern. Could even be Alaska. Kenai river? Sure, let's go with that.

Ooooh, so close....not. At least I was in the ballpark latitude-wise. ****

D - Fvck I really should learn to at least phonetically read Cyrillic if I'm going to keep playing this game. Don't see a dash cam, but still probably Russia, right?

Yep. Throw the dart at Moscow...and of course nowhere near.

E - Oh hey, is that Cabo? I think it's Cabo.

It's not Cabo.

My same out loud process:

Spoiler:

A. The small car and the van combine to make me think Europe. Coastal grasses confirm that it is a coast area and not just a lake in the distance. Steeply sloped roofs suggest somewhere that gets a lot of snow in winter. Could easily see this as Scandinavia, England or Germany. Not a lot for me to go on. Will guess somewhere southern Scandinavia and see what I get.

Amsterdam. Doubled GD's distance.

B. Pretty sure that is a Norwegian flag. There is a sign on a building that might help if it were clearer. One street sign also suggests Europe. General tone of photo suggests to me that this may actually be early spring so I'm go reasonably far north in Norway along the mountain range that forms border with Sweden.

Svalbard. ****, seeing that I now suspect that was on the blurry sign on the building. Didn't go far enough north. But still closer than GD.

C. Almost nothing to go on. Somewhere that gets enough snow to have those tall sticks to mark the edge of the road. Not super snowy area, though based on the height of them. But could still be anywhere in the world. Going to guess somewhere farther south but high mountains. So with nothing else to go on I'm gong to guess in the Cascades but could just as easily be somewhere in Russia.

Yep. Sweden. GD looks farther away in Alaska but benefits from Mercator projection.

D. Cyrillic. So probably Russia, Bulgaria, or Ukraine. Orthodox churches. Let's see, we have a billboard for a 3D Cinema off behind the trees. That building says "Torgovy Center." Which confirms it isn't Bulgaria (also Cyrillic alphabet since for some reason I remember than центр is център in Bulgarian). Still, could be most of the European SSRs. That other building has ads for "financing and credit" as well as taxis. The sign on top of the building says "Gostinitza" which unfortunately is just "hotel". Other end of the building is advertising computers.

Lost of fun straining my faint memories of Russian but no real help. Looks like terrain in the distance is relatively flat. Will go with western Russia to keep Urkaine and Belarus in play. But no real idea.

Slightly beat by GD again. One of these Russian spots will actually give me a benefit for reading Cyrillic.

E. Pretty obviously Mexico but could easily be wrong. Ocean says Pacific more than Caribbean to me but that is a gut thing. Fair sized c shaped inlet. Just because it is the first general match I saw for an inlet with a road right on the beach I'll pick this place at the northern armpit of the Gulf of California.

And GD kicks my but on that one.

I lose by a 1000.

ETA: Wow, my guess for B was almost perfect for C.

Moonliner 05-24-2013 09:01 AM

Not having much luck here.

Notes:
Spoiler:

#1: kph road sign, heavy pitch to roof implying snow, large industrial looking building, I guessed Helsinki, too far north.

#2 Polar bear sign, parking lot full of snow mobiles, Norway flag, water to the north, Toursit feel. Searched to find a way up north town with a museam. I guessed too far south.

#3 Crap, another of these stupid middle of nowhere ones. Birch trees, mostly short trees, Orange "snow poles" marking the edge of the road. Rolling hills, I'm going Yukon but edging a bit east just in case. Bang on the monet north/south, not so much east west.

#4 Ahh, I've been here before on Geogueeser. Not that it helps me much, east of Moscow I think.

#5, Not US, Ocean to the South, Spanish signs along with some english, Mid-sized waves, And.... Not Puerto Rico. Gaahhh. I lose again.

Ha! I'm the one with a camera, I must admit. Any time I don't have a camera, I always see something that I'm itching to shoot. I see the world through the eye of a camera and in terms of how it would photograph.

Maybe photos are distracting for some people but it works for me.

Alex 01-08-2014 07:11 PM

I know I've said this to someone on this board before bur I can't remember whom.

But, nothing we're generally better at than judging people for behaving irrationally incorrectly.
