We're moving to Vegas
We're moving to Vegas. Well - Henderson area most likely. My husband just accepted a job offer there. He goes out on Monday to secure housing and start work. Then we'll move as soon as my son is done with school next week.

Good luck Betty!

Awesome!
If for some reason you don't end up in Henderson, just avoid Summerlin (specifically, anywhere subject to the Summerlin HOA, but something adjacent to it over on the west side is nice) Vegas is nice. It's like inland California, just reeeeeeally far inland. But culturally, very similar. And there's always something to do! |
Awesome, congrats! I had better get busy in responding to you then, hadn't I? I know I owe you a follow up!
|
Snowflake - no worries. I'll be down for a few days... but other than that nothing different. :)

I'll take your advice on the HOA. I'd like to avoid drama at home. |
Congrats! Pretty awesome. Vegas is coolsville. (Well, in summer it's hotsville, but you get my drift.)
|
Yeah, Summerlin's a perfectly lovely area, but they keep it that way by being absolute nazis about things.
|
Make sure you post a picture of the obligatory slot machine situated in your restroom.
|
A new adventure! I hope your move goes well. Henderson is a decent place; my mother-in-law lives there. Gives us a great excuse to visit Vegas. :)

May you have zero, nada, zippo, no Adventures in Moving!
Here's to opportunity, new places, new faces, and e-z access to casino buffets. |
I hope it works out great for you and there is always something to do in Vegas!

She covered that by mentioning the casino buffets.

The moving trucks prices! Sheesh! When we moved here we had a 26' truck from Penske that was 8 feet high. It took 2 trips.
This time, that same truck rental to Vegas is nearly $1000. Ridiculously priced compared to the Uhaul 26' truck that's 6 feet high and $300. So - not only will we only be taking one trip, we'll have to use a smaller truck as well. This means some serious getting rid of stuff. I'm both dreading it and looking forward to it. I tend to accumulate things... you never know when you're going to need whatever it is... and don't want to buy it again if I already have it. And I think I probably have some pack rat tendencies as well. Aside from that, we had family over for high school graduation today and my Mom hugged me repeatedly, saying I was going to be getting that a lot as she wouldn't be able to as much after we moved. Which now makes me a bit choked up. I think I'm going to miss my Mom so much more than I expected. |
At least Vegas is still not too hard for the occasional trips. Better than the east coast or Europe. Still hard to be so far away from loved ones, though. My DD moved to the IE, and I hardly ever see her, and it's only 1 1/2 hrs away.
My father-in-law lived in Henderson. It's just far enough away from downtown to be laid back, but still close enough to easily visit. I could never live there, too hot and hard to garden. I'd go crazy with out my garden. Good luck to you, I hope all goes well! |
Be careful of the UHaul trucks - their weight limits are not very high, and you're supposed to stop at weigh stations (in California) if they're open. (We lucked out and the one we passed was closed)

Getting rid of a lot of stuff. Just cleaning some stuff out of the barn and putting it out prompted someone to come by asking about it. I anticipate feeling like the house is sort of empty when we leave and move in... but easier to keep clean for sure. Anyone have any advice on moving with cats and dogs? We had one little dog when we moved here - and a fairly short trip of about an hour. Now we have 2 kittehs and 2 pup-dogs (both are chihuahuas). I have one carrier and will have to pick up a few more... hopefully those cardboard ones will work. What else should I be thinking about with the pets and moving? |
Drugs. Lots of drugs.
Either for you or the pet. But not both. |
Well I'd your chihuahuas are like ours they LOVE to ride actually. Once they are on the car in their carrier they are quiet and sleep mainy for the entire drive. They LOVE to travel. Now the cats I've had to take them to my parents house for renovations last Oct and even though that was a 90 minute trip by car that was so awful...they hated being in their carriers and meowed constantly...good luck...
You might want to consider getting some sort of "calm down" pills or liquid at your local pet store to sedate the cats before traveling with them a long distance. That stuff works. |
Valerian is supposed to work well with some cats to calm them down.

My husband leaves for Vegas today. This is, by far, the longest we'll be apart since we started dating.
Happy overall - but I'm going to miss him sooooo much. He's got the tough part - going out and getting a house and then working and living alone for a few weeks. I'll have the support back here of family still. |
He's gone. And my cheese is incredibly sad. :(
|
I am sorry you are sad. It won't be long and you will be back together in a new house.
|
I don't know how attached your are to furniture etc but I know my cousin moved out here from Tennessee and her big regret was paying to move all her furniture out. She said it cost so much and when she got here housing was different and nothing really went anyway.
Also I sold a chair to a couple through Craigs list who had moved here from NJ. They said they'd sold all their furniture on Craigs list there and were getting all new here. They said they'd gotten a lot nice things for really cheap. I know I put stuff on there low just to get it out of my house and I'm sure a lot do the same. |
Well - he's there and exhausted. Driving in a Jeep Wrangler without a/c really knocked the wind out of sails. So - motel room and a little recovery time. Hopefully he can get the housing squared away tomorrow instead.
|
Housing mission is complete! Yay! A huge weight has been lifted. No worries about him needing a motel room another night and he can begin to get settled.
I'm so excited! SQUEEEE! |
Nice! That didn't take any time at all.

Anyone know of an inexpensive way to get him to the airport in Vegas from Henderson. There doesn't seem to be any shuttles - and a taxi is nearly as much as the damn airplane ticket is! Maybe I'm missing some great deal? |
Does he have a thumb?

taxi to a Strip casino then a shuttle to the airport? The shuttles are $11 each way, I think.
|
Sometimes - not always but longer distances a car service might be cheaper than a cab.
|
Is there a pool? And a large drink blender?

There's probably a shuttle from Green Valley Ranch
|
There is - but it also says: Must be a hotel guest and present room key to board the shuttle.
Looks like we're just going to have to bite the bullet. I should have booked him on a later flight and he could have hit his boss up for a ride. Oh well. It's only money. |
