Limited Time Magic
I can't find the original posts on this so here's a new thread.
Remember this? According to MP, it starts on Friday. The Disney Parks blog will announce each week's Limited Time Magic. They got my attention for now so I subscribed. |
Logically I know I'm not going to any of the parks anytime soon so what promotions they run this year don't matter to me personally, but emotionally this "limited time magic" concept just sticks in my craw. Oh sorry, you only get the magic if you come at the precise time we pick.
Irrational? I suppose so. |

So, the Golden Horseshoe Revue is coming back Jan 10-Feb 4th. Sounds great to me, I never saw the original. |
Quote:
And now they are doing things like this and early entry to get more AP holders in to the park? |
It won't be the Golden Horseshoe Revue unless they use a zombie Wally Boag- it'll be like seeing a c-list cast of the old show.

From the Disney Parks Blog:
"A Salute to the Golden Horseshoe Revue For a limited time only, you and your family can experience this musical variety extravaganza inspired by the renowned Frontierland show enjoyed by Walt Disney himself! Join Miss Lily and her Saloon Girls for an homage to the classic Golden Horseshoe Revue, a fun-filled show filled with plenty of family-friendly comedy, singing and dancing. Performances are Thursday through Monday, from January 10 through February 4, 2013." Hmm. Words like "salute," "inspired by," and "homage" make me "uninspired," "disappointed," and "sad." Also, "Miss Lily?" Limited Time Magic? More like Limited Magic Time. :/ |

Disagree: the price increases are Disney's attempts to make more money. It's the whole point of the company after all :)
How can they not like AP's? If there are approximately 1,000,000 passholes and let's say the (current) price averages around $450 (my WAG), what's not to love about close to half a BILLION in revenue? Sure, the economics aren't that simple, but it isn't anything to sneeze at! |
This thread reminds me of a certain attitude. A certain mindset.
|
I'm certain it does. But which one?

Not going to work (for me) unless they have someone who can channel Wally Boag. He MADE that show (IMHO) |
I was too young to remember that show (I must have seen it before I was 5), but I've seen it on film. I think it would be good to see it just to get an idea of what it was like to see it live, even if it is different actors. I would hope they got someone who could do Wally reasonably well before considering this.
Right?? |
Sh!tting on Disney for attempting to bring this back for those who have never seen it? Really?
|
Sure, I'll bite.
I grew up with The Golden Horseshoe Revue. Of all the things that have passed by the wayside over the years at Disneyland, this show vastly outshines all else on my list of things I'd like to see returned. Disney is capable of recreating the original show down to the last thread on the last can-can girl's skirt. Why did they promote the return of the Golden Horseshoe Revue, when, in fact, they were planning on creating a tribute version? On the official blog they claim the inability to do this because of the passing of Betty Taylor and Wally Boag. The show ran for nearly 40 years, Wally and Betty were often covered by understudies. By the logic used in the blog, no one could ever do a decent production of "Gypsy" because Ethel Merman is dead! Disney isn't a local theatre group trying to recreate a show by listening to a cast album and looking at some old photos. They don't need to "attempt" anything. They can just do the thing. I'm not sh!tting on Disney. Have you met me? Big fan! I'm criticizing them for letting some show director make a cut-rate effort that stinks of milking the nostalgia market, instead of providing their very loyal, very long-time audience with a show they miss and remember. This should be an extravaganza of every number, every comedy bit, every sly wink at the audience that was ever cut and replaced from the original evolving show. The Revue ran about a half hour, with about ten minutes pre-show inside the Horseshoe. Reservations, which you'd pick up at the door first thing upon entering Disneyland in the morning, were required. People didn't walk in and out of the saloon while the show was performing. The doors were closed, just like real grown-up theatre. I'm predicting that we're getting a 10 to 15 minute version of the show, doors propped open, ins and outs allowed. Here's where I veer into wild conjecture: Disney can say they put on the show, people complained, therefore people don't really want the show. The Billies continue to perform at the repurposed und underthemed Festival Arena, and the Golden Horseshoe becomes strictly a dining location with a player piano, just like its sister, the Diamond Horseshoe, at Walt Disney World. I really hope I'm wrong. |
I understand that they should do it as well as possible. However, I'd see it first before deciding that they didn't.
|
But then you miss out on all the curmudgeonly fun of pre-judging it!
|
So revivals of any Broadway show where the original cast is not available, due to ANYTHING, much less, um, DEATH, is verboten? That's absurd.
I loved the Golden Horseshoe Revue more than most. In fact, I never had the heart to go see Billy Hill or anything else playing in that saloon because I could only associate it with the zillion times I enjoyed the Revue. My loss. But also my obsession. So I will go to this "salute" and give it the benefit of the doubt, as if it's a revival - which it IS. Sheesh. Anyone in for one of those few weekend dates? |
They've added more details.

|
Pfft. All you need for the authentic Golden Horseshoe Revue dining experience is a bag of Fritos and a Pepsi.
If Parm Jim is right that this is a 10-15 minute Redux of the Golden Horseshoe rather than a full-scale revival of the shoe, I retract what I posted above. (But, with reservations required, it sounds more like the former.) |
Alas, January is insane for us, and I can't commit to any of those weekends at this time. Maybe the 19th/20th, maybe Feb 2nd. Maybe. Those are supposed to be downtime days between insane insanity so it depends on how insane we feel.
|
I also like the sound of Long Lost Friends week, when rarely-seen character (costumes) will grace the Park. Any way to find out when that's going to be?
I remember one of the coolest things about the big 30th Birthday was they brought out EVERY character that had ever walked Disneyland - many with costume design clearly not out of mothballs since the 60's (this happened in 1985). There were no scary Mickey heads from 1955 - but basically EVERY character in as recent a costume as there was. So many were really really old .... and awesome! |
One suspect the "no running" rule will be broken getting from rope drop to that podium.
Out of curiosity, how long was the original show? About the same as a Billy Hills show? |
Typically, the GHR ran about 25 minutes. So why bother with a 15 minute version? Why not add the 10 minutes? As Parm Jim pointed out, they could do an hour if they included a bunch of the songs that were rotated from the show during its 4-decade run. But pick a few that would add up to the typical running time, and include the opening and closing number that, I believe, were the same forever (Welcome to the Golden Horseshoe, and Pecos Bill).
|
Humbug. I refuse to attend.
|
You didn't want to go anyhow.
|
I'll likely go to one of the reserved evening shows, because I really want the souvenir mug (see my previous note re: "milking the nostalgia market"). The ham sandwich and fruit salad, maybe not so much. Also, looks like you have to pack your own Pepsi.
I do hope the show makes audiences as happy as the original did, and is as much a tribute to Betty, Fulton, and Wally as to the Revue itself. |
Just reserved two seats for opening night...
|
Huh? Are there online ressies only for opening nite? Because I thought the ressie system was the same as old times, i.e., Day-Of, In-Person.
|
There is an AP paid dinner once per day that you have to call in and make reservations for - see links above.
|
Went through the 35 minute process of giving Disney $70.00 (Writer for the Press-Enterprise spent over an hour!) for two tickets for the show. My confirmation e-mail today says I'm confirmed for ONE. Bank account says I paid for TWO.
Shades of the Pirates event. |
So how was the show?
|
I'm kind of bummed to miss it but I haven't been able to make it to the park.
|
I wasn't able to either. :(
I'm probably going Saturday though. Too bad to have just missed it. Waaaaa. |
You can still go this weekend - it's the last weekend.
|
!!!!
|
I saw the show, took the day off from work so I went to the park at opening to get ressies, and went back with fam for the 5:15 show. It was nice, but glad I didn't plop down $35 x 3 for it. I thought the Monte Cristo Golden nuggets were probably better than the sandwich offerings anyway.
|
Yum, Monte cristo golden nuggets sound delicious!
|
So, RStar, was the Golden Horseshoe staffed for ressies right when the Park opened?
|
We're planning on going tomorrow night, but I'm sure we need go early to get passes. Are they "selling out" quickly?
|

We arrived a little after 1:00 today and they said all ressies were gone by 11:00. However, we were able to do standby for the 2:00 show. I think they even accommodated walk-ups.
|
Going today, after my market. Want to see it again, before it glows away forever. It's not a perfect show, but it's entertaining, and nostalgic. Later this week, after it closes, I'll post my review of the AP dinner experience that Keith and I attended on opening night.
|
I'm kind of bummed I'm missing it but it just never worked out to get up there.

Oh, and I was the one that the mirror reflection hit in the face for an uncomfortable amount of time. At least I have too much hair to get the lipstick souviner on the bald head.

Got to see The Golden Horseshoe Revue "salute" last weekend, and it was such a fun trip down sweet memory lane. I wish they would have done "Lookin' for My Big City Beau" as Miss Lilly's big audience participation number, but the one they did was just fine - and in all fairness, that number likely changed many times during the show's record-breaking run.
And many numbers changed during the run - EXCEPT the opening and closing were always the same. They kept the opener, but for some bizarre reason eliminated Pecos Bill as the closer - and all of the Wally Boag part. That was just strange, as it was easily the most popular part of the show. Maybe they felt that Wally Boag could not be imitated, but that Betty Taylor could. Oddly, that left their cowboy with nothing to do, and their tenor with nothing to do, too - as they cut his song also. (Heheh, side note - the actor playing the tenor in the Salute was found on Grindr by Isaac). So my quibble is - they could have done a full revival of the show by including 2 songs. But it was still ultra sweet, and I'm glad I got to see it at the very end of its limited run. |
I don't think I'll be getting to see this. Anyone got a video of it? :)
|
So what's the next bit of "Magic?"

New Orleans Bayou Bash!, Lunar New Year Celebration, and True Love Week Disneyland’s New Orleans Bayou Bash will continue to bring its fun Mardi Gras offerings to New Orleans Square through Mardi Gras, which falls on next Tuesday, February 12. New Orleans Bayou Bash! 10:00 am – 5:00 pm February 8-12 |
There is something wrong about a Mardis Gras celebration ending at 5:00 PM
|
Quote:
It makes it hard to get there after work! ;) Not to mention a Mardis Gras celebration without booze! |
Someone could run a hose down from the bar at Club 33, I suppose. :p
I don't know why, and likely it will be meh, but I'm more interested in the Chinese New Year's celebration at DCA featuring expanded tastes of Asian cuisine. I feel like a sucker for wanting to check this out, as the Lucky Fortune Cookery - which will be the centerpiece of this experiment -has always had pretty lousy Chinese food. |
And from Al's update today:

Thanks for reminding me to check Al. I find this stuff so interesting:
Quote:
Still sad I'm missing this. It may go without saying but Al's update is really interesting this time and worth a read, at least for this out-of-touch APer. |
Seriously? Complaints? Everyone at our show ate it up. And there were no Walk-Ins. Everyone had a ressie and the doors were closed. I had to sneak Issac into the saloon. The entire audience adored Miss Lilly's flirting ways and the obviously old-west-themed Can-Can dancers. What The Giant Fvck?!
|
I find it ironic that things that would have sent Walt over the edge (hair, dress, etc...) are now normal and what he thought of as family friendly is now taboo to some.
|
I know, right? Weird world.
Anyway, that was one depressing Al's Update. When the total failure of the public to Grok the Golden Horseshoe Revue - and its revival to be a financial and dismal P.R. failure are the least sad things in the Update, that is one update I wish I'd missed. Sheesh. |
I remember when I first started reading Al Lutz in his DIG forums and even before MP, during the later part of the Pressler era, all of his updates were depressing. Then, around the shine and polish for the 50th and leading into the DCA redux, things got so much brighter. So this update took me back to the olden days!

Heh, guess I focused on the positive. I'm excited for new Tomorrowland, eventually. I much prefer a Grand Opening than a year-long roll-out with endless construction walls. Also happy that a Marvel ride in the Innoventions spot is put on hold. They may as well rename the land if they put yet another fictional-and-not-from-the-future concept in there.
It is a huge bummer if people really are complaining about the throwback. Hopefully it only refines future offerings. |
Good points. I'd much rather a grand opening Tomorrowland, too. And yeah, re-think Marvel - though, of course, I'm one who doesn't much cotton to Star Wars being there - and that footprint is only going to increase. But of course, at least it's got an outer space vibe. And I sure wouldn't mind an honest-to-goodness ride instead of those movie-cars that I'm already tired of.
I guess the thing that bummed me was the allusion to spending most of the billion dollar budget on that new Plan-Every-Minute-of-Your-Day-or-Die program that I hope fails miserably. That, and everything taking forever. I think New New New Tomorrowland will debut in 2036, which is kind of ironic, I guess. I would imagine the regular world will be pretty Tomorrowland by then. ;) |

You can't put "Star Wars" in Tomorrowland. It's a historical drama.
|
Good point!
|
Weird, seeing that it has been 20 years onlie for him. I hadn't realized he'd gone straight from AOL to MiceAge.
Pretty cool window they gave him. Reading that, though, did remind me that I am so happy to no longer care (or have any reason to know) what the name of the Disneyland president is. |
They should just rename Tomorrowland to "A Different Fantasy Land" and put whatever they want in there. Hasn't had much of anything to do with a vision of "tomorrow" for a very long time.
