Huell Howser

Alex 01-07-2013 01:48 PM

I guess that that confirms the rumors that he was sick when he announced his retirement a couple months ago.

My only exposure to him is Dana Gould doing long bits as Huell Howser on Adam Carolla's podcast. For a long time I didn't realize he was not doing an original character but an impersonation.

Gn2Dlnd 01-07-2013 03:35 PM

Huh. Just yesterday, at my farmer's mkt stand in Larchmont, near Huell's home, a customer asked me if I knew what had happened to Huell. Nobody had seen him around the neighborhood in a while. I had become used to Huell visiting my stand several weekends in a row, and then disappearing for a year. He talked a bit about the difficulty of being able to be openly gay, I teased him about his repeated questioning of a helicopter pilot about how much could actually be seen around backyard pools. I do believe he sported an "all-over" tan. At different times, he wanted to do a story on ThinKrisps (until I nixed the idea of cameras in the kitchen), and a story on Disneyland fan sub-culture, and things most people wouldn't know about the Park.

I'll miss him stopping by and "visiting."

Petro Vlahos
1916-2013

I didn't know who he was either, but check out what Ain't It Cool News had to say about him:
Quote:

You may not know who Petro Vlahos was, but you certainly know his work, if you've ever sat down to any kind of special effects movie. And I mean any kind. Vlahos made it possible to enjoy such spectacular scenes as the chariot race in BEN HUR, all the way to the Star Destroyer flying overhead in the first STAR WARS. Petro Vlahos changed the way cinema was made, and made it possible for movies to take us to every world possible in imagination, from ancient Rome to a galaxy far, far away.

Vlahos invented Ultimatte, the process that allowed for blue screen compositing in movies. It appeared in BEN HUR, and pretty much every science fiction film since. Every special effect bluescreen and greenscreen matte technology borrows something from Vlahos' original invention. Because of his camera work—Vlahos had over 35 patents for all sorts of movie technology—he opened up so many possibilities in movies today. Every director working on a summer blockbuster right now owes a huge debt to Petro Vlahos, and we movie-loving genre fans do too.

Cadaverous Pallor 02-14-2013 12:14 PM

Wow. History is littered with names that changed our lives in dramatic ways but that no one remembers. Thank you, Petro Vlahos!

Especially when you learn that "Merit menthol" is what he called his penis.

And sad for him to have died so young and yet it has been so long since he'd written a remotely good book.

It's so sad that all of Walt's immediate family is gone now, not to mention the one who fought for his legacy and historic accuracy the most.

Awww so sad, RIP Diane.

Sylvia Browne.

I almost take some pleasure in that, she was a despicable hurtful awful human being.

Children's author Charlotte Zolotow.

Charlotte Zolotow was once my favorite children's author and yet I don't believe I've ever read one of her books. She was my favorite because when I worked as a page in public libraries one of the worst tasks you could draw was reshelving (or worse, shelf reading) in the children's section. This is awful because

1) Surprisingly, young children aren't great at putting books back in the right place, and

2) The books are all super narrow so often there isn't enough spine to see any useful information so you're constantly pulling books out to see where you are, and

3) The books are all very different heights and widths so when the shelves are packed at all tightly weird things start to happen to the orderliness.

So, with a name like Zolotow it was always easy to find where her books should go. Over at the end.

Plus, her daughter is named Crescent Dragonwagon (not her birth name).

You're far classier than I am. (which will surprise exactly zero people) I take great pleasure in knowing that deceitful [expletive] will no longer be profiting off the misery of the bereaving.

Side Note: She failed to accurately predict the correct year of her own death.

Still our favorite place. My cheese is sad. My oysters are, too.

And Tom Laughlin of Billy Jack at 82.

If you'd told me he was older than Peter O'Toole, I would not have believed it.

I can think of no greater tribute.

Of course you'll have to have a copy of his magazine handy...
