Kickstarter Stuff

As an admitted Kickstarter Addict, I thought it should have a thread.

Here is one I ran across today that made me think of the LoT.

Do not open the spoiler if you are CP.

Spoiler:
Yo! GD, Valentines day is not that far away.

Snowflake 01-07-2014 12:26 PM

I love kickstarter and have backed a few worthy (to me) projects. My latest back was this egg.

I need to pay more attention, there are some really great ideas there!

Oh! I saw that one when it first launched. I thought about it but then remembered I have more than one cat and they keep each other company.

My most recently backed project is the nfcPad. It should make a nice addition to my nfc Ring if I ever get it....

I didn't click! :)

BTW the above infers that to you, I am the embodiment of the LoT. Or perhaps just a Muse.

Snowflake 01-08-2014 05:18 PM

BTW, Moonie, I did click and that is awesome!

lashbear 01-11-2014 07:01 PM

We've backed This & This.

Moonliner 02-17-2014 07:53 AM

This is making the news all over the place but in case you did not see it Kickstarter was hacked and lost some user information. They are suggesting that you change your password.

Here is my latest project backed, apparently it has become quite popular.

I picked a bad time to be broke.

This is so freaking cool! A Mini-museum.

With an hour and a half to go, looks like this isn't going to make it.

Ear Buds: The Podcasting Documentary

CP and I have been very much on board the podcasting train since close to the beginning. It's been fascinating to witness the evolution of the medium and it's provided us with hours and hours and hours of entertainment. Would love to see this documentary get made and see what the content-makers have to say about it.

Plus, all of the existing footage is from the podcast festival we attended last October, and my hand and bag of Cheez-It make an appearance. Who knows what other body parts might show up!

Ghoulish Delight 02-24-2014 12:43 PM

Update: It got funded. Imma be in a movie!

RStar 02-24-2014 01:14 PM

Very cool! :snap:

Alex 02-24-2014 01:57 PM

Did I hear you laughing in the audience when Marc Marohn posted his show from the festival?

Also, when I asked you two to let him know I want to hear less about his relationship issues that didn't mean for him to jump out of one relationship I didn't want to hear about and almost immediately into a new relationship I still don't want to hear about, especially if they're going to coo at each other on air occasionally?

Ghoulish Delight 02-24-2014 02:38 PM

We were in that audience. We were laughing. So....yes? Especially when that nutjob got on mic to promote himself. That was something else.

I'll let him know of your objections next time I see him.

I've also backed:

DouBBleTime USB charging cable-Full Battery in 1/2 the Time

I hope it works as promised, cell phone charging in 1/2 the normal time would be a good thing.

Actually if you pan down you'll see the field of view doesn't include straight down and they fill it with their logo - looks like about 10°-worth.

I have not backed them. Very much considering it.

Moonliner 06-17-2014 09:58 AM

The Steak Locker. I want but sending Headliner to college has pretty much cleaned out my toy budget for a few years.

Sounds like it's got humidity level controls. And apparently connectivity for (at the time being notional) app-based monitoring and control.

According to the "Internet" humidity control is not that important.

One piece was left in the office fridge, which was opened and closed regularly throughout the process. It ranged from 30 to 80%, with no regularity. Finally, my home fridge is lower in humidity, closer to around 50% at all times (close to ambient room humidity).

Guess what? All three produced excellent aged beef.

I wonder how much sh!t I would take from my wife for turning our drink fridge into a meat locker for a few months....

€uroMeinke 06-17-2014 11:27 AM

That sounds like an easily conducted experiment though you will have to develop a metric for **** taking

With certain precations, you can dry age meat in your fridge (or at least Alton Brown said so). But I think only for a few days safely. While this improves flavor, it is nothing compared to the real time used in proper aging- 21 to 70 days. If you put a steak on a plate uncovered in your fridge, what would it look like in almost 3 months? Yeah, a fuzzy meat cake.

So, to answer your question, this is what they say:

Quote:

Some people dry age steaks inside their regular fridge. This is not recommended (in fact, it is illegal in a commercial environment) as the environment in your fridge is not suitable for dry aging. Even popular dry bag short term dry aging can be dangerous. In the main this is due to the high humidity and highly fluctuating temperature in your household fridge that promotes bacterial growth which in turn can cause foodbourne illnesses and ruin your meat. In addition to high humidity, it lacks a germicidal inhibitor such a Spectrum UVC lamp.

I've tried the "Alton Brown" method. It's bunk. It made the steak worse.

In the article I linked to, The "Fuzzy meat cake" hypothesis is shown to be unfounded.

That was a very interesting article! Thanks!

But what I was talking about was to put a cut steak on a plate for three months, which I'm pretty sure would rot- and this guy said as much. What I didn't realize until reading this article, is that you must age whole primal cuts with the fat cap intact, creating the protective layer that protects the meat from rotting. This makes since, but I'm still worried about bacteria at the start of the project....

Oh, and at least this articles agrees with Alton Brown that you can do it in your home fridge, and buying this expensive piece of equipment is unessisary. But I never did try Alton's method, and likey never will now.

I think it will get shut down if Disney catches wind of it...

Moonliner 07-02-2014 06:47 AM

Kickstarter does seem to be a hot bed for copyright/patent infringement.

RStar 07-02-2014 06:53 AM

I understand free enterprize, and helping people get started. But does no one check Kick Starter for infringements?

Moonliner 07-02-2014 07:47 AM

With Moonie Jr. at College and Headliner heading that way soon, I can really use this Kickstarter:

I hope I don't regret this one:

I went with the "Tell me what to write" level so I could get a story on the construction of the Moonliner. Fingers crossed he knows his stuff and I get some good/new info.

Genius!

Beer Necktie

And I don't even drink beer.

Nor would I ever wear one in public.
Or in private for that matter.

Huh, perhaps it's not that "genius" now that I think about it.

SzczerbiakManiac 07-25-2014 12:56 PM

I think it could be a fun item to wear at a backyard BBQ or similarly private, fun event. But I agree, I wouldn't wear one out in public.

Snowflake 07-28-2014 04:00 PM

Handmade Handcut Paper Sculptures that are amazing

Strangler Lewis 07-29-2014 07:35 AM

The Beer Necktie: it keeps your beer cold and suggests to the world that you've got the boner of a 16 year-old slapped up against your belly. Not sure that's a great look for a group of dads standing around the barbecue.

Strangler Lewis 07-29-2014 08:01 AM

Okay, maybe it's a great look.

Moonliner 10-21-2014 07:35 AM

A bit too pricey for me, but I like the idea.

So, anyone want a robotic pancake maker?

PancakeBot

SzczerbiakManiac 03-06-2015 12:41 PM

I want to be able to use one, I do not with to prep and clean it.

Ghoulish Delight 03-06-2015 01:57 PM

Dan, went from ~$9K to $18K in a couple hours.

blueerica 03-06-2015 04:20 PM

Related News: Kickstarter is getting a bad rep with another group of friends... Apparently the Kickstartees in a couple of kickstarters have not fulfilled the promise stated.

RStar 03-07-2015 01:00 PM

Disney should get them to make character pancakes!

Strangler Lewis 03-07-2015 01:29 PM

It seems like uneven cooking would be a problem with more ornate designs.

Ghoulish Delight 03-07-2015 01:56 PM

They tout uneven cooking as a feature.

Yeah, it sucks when that happens, out of curiosity do you know what projects they backed that did not work out for them?

Alex 03-08-2015 04:55 PM

Down with mechanization putting the common man to work!

I'm going to move to Brooklyn and only consumer artisanal pancake art.

blueerica 03-16-2015 09:12 AM

Just now getting back to reading this thread...

I'll have to check with the couple of folks that posted about it, but I've seen it happen before, though thankfully on nothing I've supported at least as of this time. In the bits of discussion I've read, the ones being mentioned were "Let's make a movie" type projects. That kind of fail puts a shadow on those that are kickstarting with full understanding of how to execute and deliver on their projects.

I feel for those tech projects that fail to foresee certain aspects of fulfillment, or when bad sh*t just happens to people... I'm sure they're disappointed, too. Like, they just made all this sh*t and... now what? I always try to read up on how they intend to fulfill since that is sooo scary to put in that kind of fundage... and time... just to fail at the critical moment.

Moonliner 03-16-2015 10:40 AM

I was toying with the idea of making a Kickstarter. Any opinions on:

Model kits to make working accurate reproductions of historic technologies.

Starting with Bell's phone.

Early backers: $150.00 / Kit

Morrigoon 03-17-2015 01:04 AM

Won't the watch still work? What does it need from their servers?

Too soon? ;)

So sorry to hear that. Kickstarter can be risky.

Hopefully it gets picked up.

Snowflake 04-03-2015 02:59 PM

Well, I am still waiting for the SHRU electronic cat toy, hopefully in the next couple of months. By and large, all of my kickstarter things have been fab. Sadly not able to partake of the Ice Cream from Long Beach Creamery, but, others benefited from that! ;)

Still waiting on the Bronies! Soundtrack!
