I Heart Duran Duran
There are enough of us that this could become a very popular discussion. Ok, wishful thinking, but hey, can't a girl still try. ;)
I would love to see Duran Duran in concert. I only ever saw them once. It was a birthday gift from my godfather when I was in the 7th grade, circa 1984. Location: Great Western Forum. I had been to other concerts before, this was the first one I went to where I knew all of the songs. I danced in the aisles, had a wonderful time. My friends and I were totally into Duran Duran. My love was Roger Taylor. Now, I am thinking that John Taylor is one hot stud. :) |
I think John's still pretty cute, but I had a thing for Andy. Especially when he formed the Power Station- their rendition of Get It On (Bang a Gong) was great.
|
Anyone remember this single?
![]() I have it, vinyl of course (it was 1981). I saw them at the Roxy around that time as well. DD, Adam and the Ants, Visage and Spandau Ballet were the new hot bands. They were in a class of music called "New Romantic" and we used to dance to their music at a club called The Veil run my Henry and Joseph of Vinyl Fetish records on Melrose. They were a BIG departure from the punk and death rock I was into. My curiosity didn't last long, though. I found all of those band to be a bit too mainstream pop for my tasts. |
Andy rocked in Power Station. I've missed his sound in the crap Duran had been putting out over the last couple of albums. They should have never released Thank You. Pop Trash was also trash (so clever, I be!)
@Mamabot~Simon was always my guy but I have strong John tendencies as well. My parents deemed me too young to see the 7atRT tour (also 7th grade). I would have loved to have gone to that concert. In high school I saw John and Nick at a radio station in SF when they were promoting AVTAK. Yeah, we stalked them. ;) After they broke up (and Arcadia and Power Station went south), I wasn't so interested. Still thought JoSi were incredibly hot but their music didn't do it for me anymore. I enjoyed The Wedding Album but after that I bought the albums but my heart wasn't in it anymore. And whenever they toured I was either on my honeymoon, a poor college student, or pregnant. Then 2003 hit and my best friend got me tickets to their reunion tour for my birthday. We went with all of our girlfriends from high school and had such an incredible time. It was a GA concert and you had to fight your way to the front. It was so worth it to see Si up close. And the people I was with, it was like a reunion for us as well. Great time. Fabulous memory. We're all going in March to see them in San Jose. This time all of our husbands are going as well. Can't quite figure out why they are interested in going other than wanting to see their wives revert back to 13. Oh, and the DD high afterwards always means great sex. Anyways, you found my weakness. I could talk about this for hours....... Edited to say that I love the new album. It's what should have been the follow up album to 7atRT. |

Coming from a small town (well, back in the early 80's Modesto was small), they didn't get a lot of airplay until the Rio album. I remember liking them and having to explain to people who they were and still getting funny looks. Same with Depeche Mode. |

I was loving John and still. I did see one really hot picture of Nick and that made me crush on him a bit, but it didn't last. He's all freaky! |

And that song is old! 1981 release. Simon is my age.
I forgot about Depeche Mode. They were the other New Romantic band. Funy, I just found a DD timeline and know I was at one of the Roxy dates in '81 and I remember the in-store appearance at Vinyl Fetish (I was hanging with the VF guys at that point). I love these trips down memory lane! |
Ralphie hearts Duran Duran too. DD is his all-time favorite. :)
I like: Rio Reflex Sunrise :) |

I remember the first time I saw a picture of Simon LeBon, I almost passed out from his coolness and cuteness. I was 9....so it was 1982. He's the one who made me have.....those....feelings for boys. :D When I was 10, I wrote on their pictures on my albums....I wrote their NAMES on them. I still have them. I did the same on my Wham! albums.
When I was in high school, Duran Duran was past their first/second era of coolness, and they were touring in Europe and other countries. My friend, Doug, scored a job as a roadie (unpaid, his parents were rich and basically paid someone so he could be there and he was a keyboardist, so the keyboards were his babies), and he swears he gave Nick sumthin sumthin. He said that three of them were bisexual......and that Simon was NOT one of them. I, too, love John's delicate features. He's got a beautiful face. Simon has chubbed out a little.....but he still gives me....those....feelings. :dreamysigh: |
Roger has not aged very well. I love Andy's attitude now. Very cool guy.
I was never quite into Nick, nor Simon. Nick was a bit too Fem for my tastes. And Simon, well, he wasn't the drummer. ;) |

I was a John girl...me and my best friend in 4th grade. I was just remarking to hubby last night I would like to see Duran Duran...he said "they're so over!" Ack! My ears! |
I remember not being allowed to listen to 'Hungry Like the Wolf' when I was younger because as a nun in my grade school put it 'it had the sound of a woman having an orgasm' in the background.
:D Wow, how square can ya get? |
I didn't know that CC was selling turntables. We have a closet full of vinyls that I miss hearing and no turntable. I'll have to check into that. Thanks!
Edit: Too funny GC. I remember on the school bus in the mornings, the bus driver would have the radio on. If Like A Virgin or I Want A New Drug came on they would have to turn it down until the song was over. It still cracks me up. |

My husband's not going either....I'm going with a group of my high school friends....none of our husbands wanted to go, except one and now he's backing out because all his friends at work are making fun of him. We have 5 guys who were seniors when we were freshman going, too. They are the same guys I go with to see Depeche Mode. They are the same ones who game me.....those....feelings in high school. :D One of them is a sportscaster on our NBC affiliate in Portland and he scored us all 12th row floor seats! WooHoo!! |
Lead singers do it for me too, Claire! Jon Bon Jovi, anyone?
I can't wait to hear about your concert. What date are they in Portland? |
I seem to whore, er, float around the band members evenly. Keith RIchards, Peter Murphy, Ringo Star, Steven Tyler, Nick Cave......ok, maybe I have a slight tendency for singers. ;)
|
In honor of this thread, I'm listening to 'Drowning Man' by Duran Duran on my iTunes as we 'speak'.

Loved both New Religion and Last Chance. My Rio cd's been out a lot lately. Although my fave on that album was Lonely in Your Nightmare. And I'd kill to see Hold Back the Rain live.
|
Way back in the day when VHS tapes were uber expensive, I received a tape that had a collection of videos from Duran Duran and Rio on it. I loved that thing. I had a list of which videos were at what point on the video. I think it was lost about a dozen moves ago. Now that would be worth a trip to eBay. :)

I heart Duran Duran too, and I'm sure I had 50 pins saying as such all over my clothes and backpack!
I was a Roger Taylor fan at the time. There were 5 of us girlfriends, so of course we all had to pick one. (Though I don't think anyone chose Andy. Poor Andy.) He is looking a bit aged and tired, especially compared to John and Simon. (My aunt hosted Christmas dinner this year, and on the invitation she put a photo of all the cousins 20 years ago. I was sporting my Duran Duran trademarked haircut and you can see that I am wearing a Roger Taylor pin on my shirt and a few other that I couldn't see, due to my suspenders being in the way. Dork much? And one of my young cousins, after viewing the photo, asked me if it was Kirk Cameron. Kirk Cameron?!?) :o and now I shall leave you with that! :o |
