Hell's Kitchen

Did anyone catch this show the other night?

Hell's Kitchen (FYI, that site's a slow loader on dialup. Not that anyone here but me still has dialup.)

I thought it was an interesting concept, but I'd like some cooking tips along the way. Week after week of Gordon Ramsay telling people to bleep off isn't going to keep many people's attentions, I don't think.

MerryPrankster 06-07-2005 06:42 PM

I caught both episodes last night (including last week's). I've got to admit that I got a big kick out of it. But I don't expect to pick up any cooking tips. I'll watch the Food Network for that. I couldn't stand Chef Gordon Ramsay at first, but then I warmed up to him. The screaming, cussing and telling the customers to f--- off. All very entertaining. I've been around a lot of arrogant chefs in professional kitchens so I found it all rather amusing.

Mousey Girl 06-07-2005 08:02 PM

I am surpised, but I enjoyed it last night. I liked the fact that he told off the customers who were complaining about the kitchen staff. It seemed that he could say what he wanted to his staff, but refused to allow anyone else to bad mouth them.

One of my favourites.... "you seem a bright person you tell me what you think is going on"....."looks like you have a bunch of amateur sous chefs back there".... "very good, now sit the fvck down"

(Paraphrased)

Betty 06-08-2005 01:43 PM

This is my new favorite show. Poor Dewberry. Not only did he get the boot but that white shirt didn't flatter him AT ALL. I think he might have been born with both men and women's "parts" and they picked the wrong ones to keep. He's got some serious man boobs going on - and really the waste of a woman. And now no restaraunt either. I didn't like him at all at first but he sort of grew on me.

I hated the head chef guy but he's sort of grown on me too... the stunt with him showing up 10 minutes after everyone else was rather interesting.

Who do you like? My current favorite is the Mom with no experience.

Sheila 06-08-2005 02:24 PM

Yep, this will be my favorite summer show until Big Brother starts.

So far, I think either Chris the executive chef, Michael the tattoo guy or the guy who saved the risotto will probably be the winner. The dark horse for me is the girl who was having trouble with the beef wellington being too rare.

And of course, I'm so waiting for Andrew(?) to get his comeuppance. That scene where he tried to tell the male sous chef that it was he who saved the beef wellington was priceless! LOL

Matterhorn Fan 06-08-2005 02:46 PM

Sheila! There's been a thread about a reality show and it took you like a week to show up--I've been worried!

I don't see why we can't get a culinary tip or two from a show like this. I like to understand why things are going wrong when they are--I'm not asking for the Food Network, but just a little something here or there would be cool. But I'm intrigued enough by the human element--no air conditioning. That was cool evil.

Hehe. :D

Eh, there are some weeks where I just pretty much take a break from things internetty.

But not to worry! I did check out Dancing With The Stars (meh) and Beauty and the Geek (another meh). So far, HK seems to be the tv reality show of choice right now for me....

You didn't pick up on how to clean squid in the last show?

Matterhorn Fan 06-08-2005 02:56 PM

Dancing with the Stars was pure torture.

And Beauty and the Geek is on the WB. I'll admit, I prejudged.

I was on the phone for most of that segment, but yeah, I guess I got the basics. When that segment came on, my reaction was "oh good, he's going to actually teach them something instead of just yelling at them until they're world-class chefs."

I'm a big fan of teaching. ;)

As a vegetarian, however, I don't give a damn about how to clean squid.

As for the yelling at them, seems like a boot camp style format, tear them down, weed out the weak ones, and build them back up at the same time. Heck, I'd start laughing my arse off at the chefs acting like boot camp drill instructors if I were on the show. But being a chef and owning a restaurant isn't a dream of mine, so I don't think I'd be taking it seriously anyway.

Anyone watch the last episode. I loved how Michael and Chris were talking and Chris was saying something about it being great if it was them 2 to the end... then the next day - bam! - Michael nominate Chris! Great strategy. Loved it! And Chris did bug me a bit.

At this point I'm pulling for Elsie and Michael. :)

Mousey Girl 06-30-2005 06:33 AM

I thought it was Michael saying that to Chris. I just loved the look on Chris's face when Michael put him up. I like Elsie, but she gets rattled to easily. I have a feeling it will be Michael and Jessica at the end. I enjoyed Michael's strategy, slamming the other team with lasagna orders. I can't get over Jimmy and Andrew still being there.

Kels 06-30-2005 08:59 AM

I'm rooting for Michael, he's the only one I can see running his own restaurant. I loved that he nominated Chris and I loved Chef Ramsey's little speech about arrogance. (Did you catch the clip for next week when he asks Ralph if he "got the point"?) Not only did Michael eliminate his biggest threat but he seemed to have gained a few favorable points from Chef. Nice.

I also love Jean Phillipe!

Matterhorn Fan 06-30-2005 02:10 PM

I'd be suprised if Michael doesn't win.

Has anyone here seen "Cooking Under Fire" on PBS? I wish I'd heard about it sooner. Instead of Ramsey they've got Ming Tsai and Todd English (people I've heard of before--and Ming kicked some Iron Chef booty earlier this year!).

They're not in a restaurant, but they're cooking their own dishes for famous chefs. Next week they're supposed to be in the kitchen at Todd English's restaurant in NYC.

Totally. I can't quite put my finger on why though.

Just checked tivo and it didn't record anything last night. The website says that next week is a 2 hour episode - so I guess that makes up for it.

Mousey Girl 07-06-2005 03:23 AM

Whew! When I saw a new post to this thread I was afraid I missed it last night.

Matterhorn Fan 08-01-2005 04:39 PM

The finale's on tonight (Monday). FOX. 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Mousey Girl 08-01-2005 05:39 PM

I want Michael to win. Ralph rubs me the wrong way. It should be interesting with all of the ex-chefs coming in to help.

Betty 08-01-2005 05:53 PM

Go Michael!!!

Kels 08-01-2005 07:45 PM

Yay! More Michael fans. I hope he wins too. :)

MickeyLumbo 08-01-2005 07:50 PM

been rootin' for Michael all along (love the tats)

East Coast spoiler enclosed
Spoiler:
I'm glad Michael won. He seemed the more talented culinarily. (Is that even a word?) And he wasn't an asshole like Ralph.

MickeyLumbo 08-01-2005 08:57 PM

no worries, really. i had no idea either. good to know though, as i have used spoilers in the past too.

anyway, i am still enjoying the show VERY much...they are just about to introduce the cooks to Ralph and Michael.

:-)

Mousey Girl 08-01-2005 09:13 PM

Spoiler:
Thank you Steph!!!

Kels 08-01-2005 10:09 PM

That was the most nervous I've been about a show in a long time. Yay for Michael. And although Lola Pop seemed kinda weird for a name, it worked. All together now...Ahhh.

CrazyLegs 08-02-2005 02:31 AM

I want him to win and he did Awww

Betty 08-03-2005 05:33 AM

We had it tivo'd and didn't watch it until last night.

We all cheered when Michael's door opened. I can't believe he gave up the prize to go to London... well - I guess after he works with Ramsey for awhile he'll have no trouble opening a successful restaurant anyway.

I wonder if there'll be another season. It seemed to do well enough in the ratings.

I wonder if Chef Ramsey would've given Ralph the same off had he been the winner. Something tells me he wouldn't. It seemed like that was a spur of the moment decision on his part.

Morrigoon 08-03-2005 04:11 PM

It doesn't seem like he "gave up" the prize. Probably just postponed it to become a better chef first and give his future restaurant a better chance at survival.

Mousey Girl 08-03-2005 06:18 PM

Ralph would have been so full of himself that had it been offered to him he would have turned it down thinking he didn't need any extra assistance.
