Sub-Scriptions

I was thinking of my beloved Disney magazine and how much I'll miss it. It was a nice little surprise for Georgie waiting in the mailbox after a hard day's work.

I still have a few other subscriptions ...

1. National Geographic
2. Reader's Digest
3. Back to Godhead
4. Entertainment Weekly

I just recently let my Smithsonian 'scription run out. And Disney magazine died. In the past I subscribed to Spy, Rolling Stone, a Chaplin newsletter and (if you can somehow believe it) the National Review. I would love to 'scribe to Mojo but it costs too much.

What's the point of my thread? I don't know. Should I? Hmm ...

Well, you all know what I 'scribe to, but I don't reckon I know what you 'scribe to.

Pray tell.

Kevy Baby 06-09-2005 07:11 AM

(Althought this was not the point of the thread...)

I think everyone should subscribe (with a small donation) to LoT. I just realized I've been freeloading. Gotta fix that.

MerryPrankster 06-09-2005 07:24 AM

Tref~ Send your 12 kids over to my house if they are in need of reading material. I subscribe to way too many magazines, even with Disney now being out of the mix.

1. People
2. Us Weekly
3. Sports Illustrated
4. Field & Stream
5. Sunset
6. More
7. Fitness
8. SnowBoarding
9. Ski - free
10. Skiing - free
11. Premiere - free
12. Via (comes with AAA membership)
13. Nutrition Action Healthletter (excellent, I highly recommend it)
14. Glamour
And yes, I do subscribe to the LoT too.

Ghoulish Delight 06-09-2005 08:06 AM

Nada. I used to subscribe to the Dell Math Problems and Logic Puzzles magazine. But I've let that lapse and instead subscribe to an online logic problem site. We also had a Discover Magazine subscription for several years, which we've let lapse. I had an unsolicited subscription to a golf magazine that I've finally successfully gotten the bastards to stop sending (I think).

wendybeth 06-09-2005 08:30 AM

I used to subscribe to the Smithsonian and National Geographic, but I let them lapse. I don't really have any subscriptions now, unless you count the local newspaper, and I'm not renewing that one either.

alphabassettgrrl 06-09-2005 10:30 AM

National Geographic.
Girlfriends.
Herb Companion.
The one AAA sends. Westways? :: shrug::
And there's a dive magazine we get.
My grandpa gives us a gift subscription to Readers Digest.

SusieP. 06-09-2005 12:30 PM

Entertainment Weekly= The Paper. It's the must-read.

I also get Oprah and InStyle. And Better Homes and Gardens, which I do not want. Oh, and Cooking Light, but I never cook anything!

Baileykat 06-09-2005 12:47 PM

We presently only get on paid subscription Texas Monthly (sticking to my roots!) and American Cheerleader.

Used to get Glamour, Redbook and Good Housekeeping.

Bailey gets Ranger Rick.

Kat gets afore mentioned American Cheerleader.

Need to send in my subscription cards for Oprah and American Cheerleader Jr.

AllyOops! 06-09-2005 01:41 PM

I get Lucky (the magazine about shopping) and In Style. My Mom has been subscribing to them as a gift for me for a long time now. Thanks, Mom! :) I love when they come in the mail.

I won't subscribe to anything else, because as crazy as it sounds? I LOVE going to the newsstand! If you know me, you know my weekly highlight is "New Magazine Thursday". That's what I call it! And you know what today is! I love choosing all of my reading material, and then picking up an iced coffee at either Starbucks or The Coffee Bean on the way home. (I know, it sounds so sad.) Then, I curl up either in bed on a bunch of pillows, or outside in the sun on a chaise lounge and read to my heart's content. It's my weekly ritual, and I love it.

I purchase every week:

Us
Star
In Touch
Life & Style

Sometimes, I'll purchase People ( especially if Britney is on the cover) and I really like Hello! (The british gossip mag. I hardly know any of the celebs, but I still love reading about them!) My main reason for leafing through all of these mags is to follow the adventures of Britney & Paris. I'm obsessed with Britney. However, I'll read ANY magazine. I'm magazine happy, and I love to read.

And of course, the one woman's magazine I love? The femme bible, of course- Cosmo! July's issue was very informative. You can never get enough tips on keeping your man (or rather, his package) happy.
:p

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 06-09-2005 01:42 PM

My mom gifted me with Jane, which used to be a somewhat charming girlie rag, complete with vibrator comparison shopping and semi-serious articles about female castration amidst the drivel. Now it's about as utter crap as crap mags can get, and I hate it.

BUST comes out with a quarterly issue, so I just buy them as they come out; that magazine is my DREAM magazine. Amy Sedaris was featured in the last issue.

Also sometimes buy Juxtapose and Scientific American.

LSPoorEeyorick 06-09-2005 02:01 PM

Like my active Catholicism, my subscription to "Daily Word" has lapsed.

I missed the last issue ever of Disney magazine, because without the Premium AP, I didn't get a free subscription this year.

I had two years of Real Simple as a gift, but then I forgot to ask for it this year, and it ran out. I'm stuck picking it up in airports, where I flip through the pages and catch the bf reading quietly over my shoulder. Real Simple: apparently not just a chick's mag.

SacTown Chronic 06-09-2005 02:15 PM

Currently only Sports Illustrated.

Over the years:

Mother Jones (MoJo, baby)
Reader's Digest
Disney
Mad
Muscle & Fitness
National Lampoon
Men's Health
National Geographic
High Times
Time
The Sporting News
Playboy

Prudence 06-09-2005 02:28 PM

My mom gave me her free gift subscription to Reader's Digest, which is about all my attention span can handle anyhow.

And sometimes I pick up Chocolatier at the newsstand. Chocolate Porn. Mmmmmmm

:snap:

I love Real Simple. It's the only mag I've ever subscribed to. It also happens that I can't seem to part with them. When I moved last month I filled an entire box with back dated Real Simple mags. Hey, I might need them someday for ...something.

Anyone else have a hard time parting with used their magazines?

Matterhorn Fan 06-09-2005 04:28 PM

I get the one AAA sends (forget what it's called out here), and alumni magazines from two colleges I graduated from.

I pay for Vegetarian Times.

DisneyFan25863 06-09-2005 10:24 PM

MacAddict
MacWorld
Popular Science
Popular Mechanics
Time
Newsweek
National Geographic
and some Mazda Employees letter

All but the last are in my name, though a few were gifts :D (I literally spend all of my money on books/magazine subscriptions. Kinda sad, but I'm a book worm)

JoeInJpn 06-10-2005 12:57 AM

I subscribe to "Disney Fan", the official Japanese monthly magazine. And to "Funderful Disney" the official magazine of the Tokyo Disney Resort Fan Club. As for newspapers, the International Herald Tribune.

Stan4dSteph 06-10-2005 06:56 AM

Time Out NY - weekly magazine with all the happenings in The City.
Premiere - great movie mag
Sunset - cooking, home decor, gardening and travel all in one awesome package

I used to subscribe to Jane years ago, and I used to love it! It was so unique and informative. I picked it up at the newsstand not too long ago and found myself thinking, "what happened?" (Except for the article written by actor Michael Rappaport on his ex-roomie, actress Natasha Lyonne being wonkier then a bag of hammers. I read part of the article, glossy eyed, at the newsstand.)

And I love Bust. :)

Today, I hit my favorite newsstand in Studio City and left with..
Us
Star
In Touch
Life & Style
Celebrity Living

Then, I hit Starbucks for an iced coffee, making a beeline for my bed at home. I've been buried in pillows reading all of the same articles (Lindsay vs. Jessica!) and enjoying Britney's pregnancy photos.
:)

I think Ranger Rick magazine may have been my first subscription ever. I still have my official RR club card, too. Way back in '72 I also used to get Disneyland magazine, too. Remember that one? The front covers were the best thing about them -- great, high color, original artwork. I still have a big stack of 'em somewhere in storage*

Prudence 06-10-2005 10:05 PM

Okay -- this is actually a serious question.

I'm trying to be slightly less androgynous and more like an actual girl. I haven't read a chick magazine since I was probably 15. Well, I read one bridal magazine when I got engaged and then decided that was a task best left to my mother.

Are there any good magazines for females that won't make me depressed because the way to happiness is to be a size 4 or, conversely, fill my world with 30-minute casseroles? I just want to know what to wear and put on my face or whatever so I look somewhat like the other people in this world.

MickeyD 06-10-2005 10:29 PM

I have more subscriptions than I should, I love magazines!

I subscribe to:
Sports Illustrated
Espn the Magazine
Entertainment Weekly (which I don't think I've gotten in a couple weeks, crap, gotta look into it...it usually automatically renews)
In Style
Real Simple

@ work I subscribe to:
America
U.S. Catholic

Magazine subscriptions take up quite a bit of space on my Amazon wishlist too....there's about 20 more magazines I wish I got....

So far, the closest I've seen is Atlantic Monthly.

There is a serious dearth of such a mag out there- our shop subscribed to Mode, which our clients loved, but it went out of publication. It was a mag designed for size 12 and up, but there was no real harping on the weight issue- it really was designed for the average woman. Jane was sort of good as well, until it got weird. I guess the closest thing now is Redbook, which in no way fits the bill. They are either about size zero coutere, or haute cuisine, or both. (Which is odd, given that to wear the one, you must forego the other..) I gave up on mags a while ago- I now just pay attention to our industry trend mags and such.

Gn2Dlnd 06-11-2005 02:17 AM

When I do subscribe, it's to the New Yorker and Harper's. Currently, nothing except the triple A magazine. Slate online seems to fit the bill just fine.

You, suh, are so bourgeois. What with your corn cob pipe and your triple A. I 'spect you drink your lemonade with a little umbrella in it.

Gn2Dlnd 06-11-2005 05:21 PM

Indeed, my dear boy. On the day the delightful photograph by which you know me was taken, I was, in fact, suffering from umbrella eye. A malady for which, alas, there is no cure.

Matterhorn Fan 06-12-2005 08:34 AM

The key is to put your paper umbrella in your hair behind your ear while you finish your drink. I used this strategy most festively in the Tiki Room once.

And then remembered that I had a paper umbrella in my hair when it scraped against the roof of the car when I was getting in after I'd put gas in the car . . .

. . . in Santa Clarita.

Good times.
