House of Blues, Anaheim~DEVO
Well, I've been keeping my eyes open for this one....
Devo is playing at the HOB in Anaheim {I am assuming DTD?}. The tickets were a bit steep, $62.50. Double that, add a hotel room, meals, and, it wasn't doable. But... Today is 2 for TU!!! Meaning, to select shows, you can buy one ticket and then {as long as they have more} you can get the second one free!! I know there are Devo fans out here and I wanted to let you know. The show is 8/05/05. The ticket sale starts at 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Am I going? I don't know...I just wanted to share this. I don't believe you have to be a member of the HOB site, call the place and find out if you are interested. If you need to sign up, it isn't that difficult. Good luck and let me know if anyone goes!!! |
Woohoo - Thanks for the tip Mousewife. I'd been watching this one for awhile. Having seen Devo numerous times back in the day, I'd been curious to see what kind of a show they put on today. Of course, with prices like that - close to the price of a day in Coachella, I just couldn't justify the cost of my curiosity.
Anyway, I just picked up 2 for 1 this morning. Now I guess I just have to see if Not Afraid can stomach an evening with Devo (punk rock purist that she is). I promise I'll leave my yellow suit at home. ;) |
I'll never forget the first time I saw DEVO. They were on Saturday Night Live. I freaked out. The next day I ran, literally, to our little town's pathetic record store and demanded to know if they had it. Two long weeks later, I was the happy owner of Q:Are We Not Men A: We are DEVO! My little geek brain went spazoid. Alas, I never saw them live.
I hear tell that a certain someone with a post just above mine had an amazingly similar experience. |
See what happens shen you sleep late! ;)
It must be love. I'm going to see DEVO. |
Flippyshark, that is what happened to my sis and I back in the day! She found them on an LA radio station {same one we would listen to Dr. Dimento} static and everything. It was awesome!! We were faithful listeners, regardless of what anyone said!
Yeah Chris! Glad you guys got tix! The Hubster and I are toying but not real serious about going. See, they are also playing down here and that would be more feasible. We did a few shows up in L.A. recently and whew! did the $$ fly out the window! I hope they do a 2 for TU here.... But, yes, you guys were who I was thinking might go... A report would be awesome!! And, not yellow suit but will you wear the flower pot? Lisa, Coachella must have been heaven for you {punk rock purist that you are ;) }. I love hearing your DEVO experiences!!! |

It was also great to see some new talent. I love how inspired Arcade Fire is by early Brian Eno, Talking Heads and even a bit of Disco. It's fun to make those connections. |
Man oh man. DEVO! And of course they're not playing in SF. August 4 & 5 in Anaheim and then again on September 1. Hmmm.
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah YEAH! |
So, I hear there's a room available for you 2 that night. ;)
|
Oh, I heard there were so many great bands there. I like how they do promote the new bands, too. As well as the older ones. A new band that I am liking is 'The Bravery'. Also, I'd like to see System of a Down so that I can see 'The Mars Volta' open for them.
Did you like Nine Inch Nails performance? I am not really familiar with all of their music, mostly their radio tunes. But, I am going to their show in September. They are kicking it off here in SD. Ugh, I forget the name of the other band {QOTSA yes but another}...Audiovox? Or is that the name of a electronic company? Ah...so many shows...so little time!! |
I thought NIN took a while to get their groove back. I saw them once before with David Bowie and they were fantastic. They seemed to start out slow at Coachella, but then they really got it together and put on a good show. It was probably great, but I was so exhausted and we wern't in the best spot. They can sound really great and Trent still has it. (Now that he's sober, he just makes my little heart pound!)
There's some stastic about bands that play at Coachella have a HUGE jump in the record sales. Maybe € remembers what that is. |
Ah, yes, Trent in the 'Hand That Feeds' video is pretty damn buffed.
Maybe the were slow because they hadn't toured in a while? Although, I think they played the night before in Vegas. I'd imagine the sales would jump. People who were fans {like yourself :D } already have the music but the folks who go get their ears opened up to new stuff. Did you hear after that '8' show bands like Pink Floyd saw a big jump in their sales? I heard they donated the new $$ to a charity. |
Yeah, these blockbuster events are every promoters dream. They sure didn't used to be this way - it was mostly dinosaur bands on big ugly stages - but Perry Farrell's Lollapalooza turned that idea on its ear and make things really fun.
The Largest, Glastonbury Festival and the popular Coachella have a HUGE impact on record sales for the bands performing at these festivals. I was never one to like the DinoFests, but I've really enjoyed Coachella. |

I also must confess that I spent the night outside the Santa Monica Civic to get tickets to a Devo Concert (where the Flower Pot hat's debuted). They put on a great show back then. Quote:

Mark Mothersbaugh signed the case of my Amiga 3000 computer...
|
Ah...thought I'd post what I just saw about the San Diego HOB DEVO show...Postponed!! Their 2 shows, postponed! I don't know when it happened.
Ack! Any news on the Anaheim HOB? Geez! They've got me jerkin' back and forth!! |
I once got in a lot of trouble for impersonating the dude doing the seizure dance thingy in Devo's video for Satisfaction...
I guess it served me right that about 10 years later I would start having real seizures. :) |
Oh that sucks!!!
I used to make fun of a guy with a mole on his ear...and that's all I'm going to say about that........ |
i've never seen DEVO live. i think August 5th will be a good time to put that to an end. :)
|
I would love it if you would join us! You can keep me from being bored. ;)
|
i just checked out the ticket info and all of the Southland shows are $60-$65. that seems a bit steep. its not so much the amount...its the principle. But then again, it is DEVO. has anyone heard how their recent performances on this tour have been like? perhaps they still live up to their reputation. i don't know.
|
Yeah - to be honest, as much as I enjoyed them in the day - I wouldn't pay $65 to see them now (unless of course they were part of Coachella or something). I only picked up the tickets becasue of the 2fer deal.
|
 I hope you guys are having a great time!!!!
|
Well, I'm going to post first then let the true DEVO geek tell you more about it.
DEVO was the only band to play. They came out and did 5 in a row or all of their later hits (stuff from Freedom of Choice) . I was thinking that this was going to be a loooong show. The crowd was a dancing and singing madhouse as I stood there thinking that Mark Mothersbaugh sure looks old. Boy, they all look old. Do I look that old.........They did Whip It and the horror of that entire album came back to me (and the embarassing time I danced with cute Jeff Cordova to this awful song). But, then they started to DEVOLVE. They went back in time and started playing the "good stuff" starting with Satisfaction. The rest of the concert was pure 1977-1979 bliss. People stopped singing (except for Chris and a few other die-hards) and the magic of thie music was recaptured. They played a F-ing GREAT show! The encore was a mini devolution starting with Freedom of Choice and working backwards once again. Funny, but I don't think they played anything from the REALLY awful New Traditionalists album. I got the sense that they like their early stuff better too. YAY! |
I SUCK!....well i did my absolute best to try and make the show tonight. the gods were against me. Im sorry i was not able to hook up with Euro and NotAfraid. for starters, i was denied the 2fer1...then i lost an eBay auction by two seconds...then my dearest friend and life long DEVO fan Tracy slept till 8 pm and I forgot my wallet when i went to pick her up...in a nutshell...it wasnt meant to be. So what am i going to do. Im going to freakin' DEVO on Sunday..sorry Euro and NotAfraid...i will definately hit you guys up soon. it seems the gods were against me tonight. i'll talk to you soon. Love David!

It's the morning after and my ears are still filled with cicadas - Last night was a blast if a bit bizzar.
I think I last saw DEVO in 1981, and both crowd and band we're much younger. In an odd way, this seemed to work for the band. Granted when they emerged wearing their industrail yellow suits, they no longer appeared as angst-riden teens - rather they looked like theiur dads - in their work clothes, ready to go down to the recombinant DNA plant. They still had their sense of perfromance and style. They kept their stilted choreography which at one timed mocked the boy bands of the past, but now as old men, some with belly's - the image was elevated to a new sort of absurd. Some images and memories of the show:
And it keeping with our recent concert going experience, we again ran into someone we didn't expect to see there. This time it was someone I knew from work and her husband - who's paths we must have crossed back in the late 70's early 80's as we relived past concert experiences over a post concert cocktail at Tortila Joe's. Next up, Gang of Four, the Knitters, and possibly the New York Dolls... |
And, O.P. Go see the show. They were really good. |
Oh wow. It sounds like you guys had a blast! Yes! Their earlier music, their earlier attitudes, must have been mind blowing!
I am cracking up imagining them in their yellow suits~ a la looking like their dads! That is too funny! NA, I am glad it turned around for you and gave you a show you could enjoy. If they reschedule down here, I will have to go. Pogo my butt off!! |
OK...its official. i am going to the show on Sunday. My friend just picked up tix for the show on the strip. Nice! I am now a happy camper :) .
|
For you DEVO fans, Mark Mouthersbaugh did an interview on NPR.
