What is it I'm listening to?

Ohhh oohhh..

That's Masanori Ikeda "Theme from Lupin the 3rd"

What are you listening to?

Eliza Hodgkins 1812 07-29-2005 03:40 PM

Within the last couple of days:

Aimee Mann's new album.

Tilly and the Wall.

The Ramones.

Not Afraid 07-29-2005 04:09 PM

Hmmm. Just moments ago I went back to a recent, but dull addiction - the most recent ColdPlay.

However, I've recently been listening to Apollo 440, The Go-Betweens, Stereo Total, and Corneloius.

Motorboat Cruiser 07-29-2005 04:14 PM

Lots of Grateful Dead. :)

(I just got a gig playing in a Grateful Dead tribute band)

Boz Scaggs, Silk Degrees. On cassette.

Judge Judy on the telly. While I work on my torts outline.

It seemed appropriate background noise.

Kasabian. My sister-in-law forced the CD on us, and she was right, it's good.

AND, their song L.S.F. has sounds in it similar to the Electrical Parade bee! :snap:

Wait a second, you asked a question and then answered it before anybody had a chance to guess.

I was going to guess, the theme from "Frasier"

I have been listening to Suicide. I got one of thier CD's of of Amazon and I can't stop listening. I love the raw punk rock sound that they have even though it was all made by analog synths! It has actully gotten me writing music again!

OMG! Suicide! Alan Vega and Martin Rev. (How is it I remember this crap?)

I only have vinly. Is a CD available now?

I've been listening to Readymade Digs Disney - cool mixes and remixes of classic and odd Disney tunes. Readymade is Yasuharu Konishi from Pizzacato 5. And it all comes back again to Disney and Japan. ;)

Yeah they do have CD's out, just check amazon. The album I got is called first album the others one just called just called suicide and then A way of life! I am going to get the other 2 and then go on ebay (when I have more money) and try to get some vinyl. I was not kidding I can't stop listening to these guys, its really great stuff. I wish I had heard about these guys sooner, oh well. ;)

mousepod 07-31-2005 05:33 PM

Wow, Suicide! I loved those guys. When I was in high school, I remember tearing out a full-page ad from New York Rocker and sticking it on my wall. It said, "Join those who feel that Suicide is A Way of Life." My dad really loved that one.
Years later (in 1989, I believe), I saw them play a reunion show at the Ritz. They were the last band to play in a roster of Wax Trax bands. While half of the audience cleared out, Suicide still rocked.
Thanks for reminding me about Alan and Martin... I'm going to go pick up a CD or 2 this week.

Not Afraid 09-07-2005 11:37 AM

I went on a small CD binge the other day. I cam report that I am in LOVE with all 4 of the CD's I purchased. Some I have in vinyl still, others are new, all are great. The selection includes:

The Knitters "The Modern Sounds Of......." 2nd album (after 20 years between the first) from member of X and The Blasters.
The Slits "Cut" Early English gilr punk band that STILL sounds great.
N.Y No Wave "The Ultimate East Village 80's Soundtrack"
Memphis Minnie "In my Girlish Days" This was a John Doe recommendation and I love it.

I also found a GREAT site for odd music called Oddio Overplay thanks to Modern Folly. I have downloaded all of the Kresge Department Stare Soundtrack and, Like MF, am now dancing around my house (to the amusement of the cats).

blueerica 09-07-2005 11:52 AM

Death Cab for Cutie's latest CD "Plans".

It's sooooo frigging good.

Today, however, I'm taking a trip back through Death Cab's vault and really loving "The Sound of Settling"

I've got a hunger twisting my stomach into knots; that my tongue is tied off
My brain's repeating if you've got an impulse, LET IT OUT!
but they never make it past my mouth

(Bop Ba...) This is the sound of settling (Bop Ba, bop ba...)
(Bop Ba...) This is the sound of settling (Bop Ba, bop ba...)

Our youth is fleeting, old age is just around the bend and I can't wait to go gray
And I'll sit an wonder of every love that could have been
If I'd only thought of something charming to say

(Bop Ba...) This is the sound of settling (Bop Ba, bop ba...)
(Bop Ba...) This is the sound of settling (Bop Ba, bop ba...)

I'm reviving this thread because, well, we've got some new music.

Actually, we have lots of new stuff, but what i REALLY want to share about is something MousePod played for us and I've become addicted to.

Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes - Tribalistas.

I haven't been this in love with a CD in a while, but I can't seem to turn it off. It's perfect summer music, so languid and rich. I was playing it in my car as the hot day cooled into a foggy night, my sunroof was open and the stereo was turned up. Even traffic on the 101 couldn't dampen my mood. Monte has the purest, sweetest voice - it's like a cool drink of fresh spring water on a hot day. Brown's deep rumble provides the perfect counterpoint to Monte's sweetness.

If you are a fan of Brazillian music of any type, you MUST listen to this CD.

Monte's 2 - yes 2 - new solo albums come in close behind in my addiction. Such great stuff!

We're seeing Monte live at UCLA in November. It's a rare appearance and I'm very excited.

Thanks MousePod!

Ditto on Not Afraid's Thread & thanks to MousePod for always broadening our listening horizons.

In addition I've been having fun with Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited, which I discovered trying to recreate the Tomorroland Tokyo Loop - sort of retro-contemporary space surf guitar - ala Dick Dale meets Esquavil.

I also tracked down a CD by Monokini, a fun indie Brazillian band that's sort of a poppy Stereolab sound, great for Summer. That's spurred me back to two favorites from Spain, Le Mans and Anna D - again foriegn indie-pop that just sounds great on a hot Summer day.

KT Tunstall - Eye to the Telescope

Other bands you might like, Pink Martini (which isn't French but sometimes sounds that way) and 8 1/2 Souvenirs or you might want to reach back to thier influences and get some Django Rheinhardt.

LSPoorEeyorick 02-13-2008 04:22 PM

Apparently, America. Not quite by choice.

My iPod died, and no defibrillator paddle - nor Genius Bar - can resuscitate. So I've been listening to (gasp...) radio. And for whatever reason, for the past week I haven't been feeling the standard KCRW. Perhaps my mornings are eclectic enough right now. So I've been back and forth between an oldies channel, a randomized channel, and a classic rock channel. At the center of the venn diagram of their playlists sits America's "Sister Golden Hair."

This morning, in fact, it came on again while I was on the randomized channel. Amused, I started to text Tom about it, since it was probably the eighth such playing of the song I've caught in the last seven days. I knew he was busy, so I saved the draft for later, and then changed the channel when it went to commercial. I caught the end of another oldie, which was followed by... lucky number nine.

Is the radio trying to tell me something?

I won't meet you in the middle, I won't meet you in the air
Would please cease stalking airwaves, dreadful Sister Golden Hair?

Not Afraid 02-13-2008 05:28 PM

While he does occasionally have some funny stuff, I long ago gave up on his rantings.

blueerica 02-15-2008 05:09 PM

I threw together a quick playlist of stuff that I could listen to and work without too much distraction.

Right now: Styx - "Fooling Yourself"
Next:
Tom Waits - "The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)" <-- <3 this song
Rilo Kiley - "Three Hopeful Thoughts"
Blackalicious - "Alphabet Aerobics"
Queen - "Killer Queen"
and then...
Arling & Cameron - "We Love Dancing" <-- the song that will forever be sung as "We Love Pookie"

Aww... You know, I still miss Dex. :) I may just skip ahead so I can be all happy-thoughtted again...

Not Afraid 02-15-2008 07:04 PM

We love Pookie.....YAY! :(

I still miss him too. He was my baby boy!

flippyshark 02-15-2008 08:52 PM

Dex was the best.

Anyone here listened to A Fine Frenzy? It's not a band so much as just the delightfully talented singer/songwriter Alison Sudol. Her debut album, One Cell In The Sea, is on my frequent rotation list these days, especially the "title" track, actually called "The Minnow and the Trout," as fine a humanist sermon as I could hope for. Radio-wise, you are more likely to have heard her ballad "Almost Lover" if anything.

So, Best Buy (the closest thing we have to a record store out here) finally restocked their supply of Vampire Weekend and we picked it up last weekend.

It might not be my all-time favorite album ever, but the album is listenable end-to-end - which, to me, is impressive for their debut effort. We basically let it repeat over and over and really just can't get enough of it. They really live up to the hype they've gotten.

If you haven't checked them out, please do so. Like, now.

If they bother doing it, they should try and break out and do it in a slightly different style, since frankly, even Etta James doesn't sound as good doing it as she did during that recording session.

That is all.

Institube Paris Terror Club.

They're on one version of the Coachella lineup list as appearing and featuring (among others) "Orgasmic". However on the latest lineup, there is simply "Orgasmic Curses". From what I've pieced together, it seems that it was probably a bunch of D.J.'s of that run in the same circle that were all going to show up, but most have dropped out (seen it happen many a time for parties).

But I digress. They're a definitely a noise act. Serious noise. But they've got something that keeps me interested. I don't know if I could hang for a full set (or even part of a set) at Coachella. Rather, I know I could hang, but it would require seriously committing to being okay with really really noisy music for 30-40 minutes. Like, noisier than I was even listening to when I was still going to parties. It's definitely "either you're in or you're out" type music. I'm guessing I won't be in the mood to take that kind of abuse (and I mean that in the best sense of the word) in the middle of the desert with a dozen other acts I want to see.

(Had to pick up Enchanted and I r teh Legend) I'm about this close to buying them on iTunes, but J's vehicle doesn't seem to like burned CDs 100% of the time, and he wants to listen to them to and from work, too.

Even though it means I'll be eating nothing but pasta for the next few days, I just bought three of her albums. What am I listening to right now?

A friend turned me on to a song that was a big hit last year. "Those Beautiful Girls" by Sean Kingston. I am no Hip Hop fan at all in any sense of the word. However the song strikes a chord with me since the song's melody is a sampling of "Stand By Me" This is exactly how The Drifters would sound if they were a Hip Hop group. The only difference is that it ends so abruptly as many of these similar songs do for Radio play. I get lost in the song and then the ending shakes me violently back to reality. That almost kills the attraction for me. I give it :snap: :snap: :snap: A fade out instead would give it a higher rating from me.

We took our birthday money and indulged in a post-Coachella splurge at Virgin.

Holy F*ck
Portishead
Sons & Daughters
Architecture in Helsinki
Kraftwerk

And for good measure, we bought a Man Man album and a 2nd Sons & Daughters album from Amazon.

I'm feeling pretty sated.

I had forgotten how much I loved The Posies. I'm currently listening to their solo stuff. The lyrics for "Je Vous En Prie" by Ken Stringfellow are just beautiful. As is the music. I keep listening to it over and over again.

LSPoorEeyorick 05-20-2008 10:32 PM

I'm listening to snippets of my CD collection as I import to my laptop! Tonight, everything from Ani DiFranco to Billie Holliday.

Anna Ternheim - Halfway to Fivepoints.

great video here

(quick story: Yesterday, Heather and I went to the new Americana mall in Glendale - aka The Grove North - to dine at Katsuya and pick up tickets to see Indy at midnight tonight. After we ate, we stopped in Barnes and Noble to get some magazines, and they were playing this CD. I asked the clerk who it was. He didn't know and pulled it out of the player. Long story short, I grabbed it. When I got home, I looked her up on the web. Turns out that this, her third album, is her first US release - less than a month old. Also turns out that she played in LA... on Monday night. I was 20 hours late to the party. D'oh!)

Hey, What Do You Say - Kenny Wayne Shepherd

If I could put myself at ease for awhile
Maybe I could learn to appreciate your smile
I got a lot to give but I never give enough to you
Oh to you

[Chorus:]
I'm not tryin' to make you feel uncomfortable
And I'm not trying to make you go away
All I really want to do is be with you
For awhile or just today
I said hey, what do you say

Now dont you tease me, dont you mess me around
I got alot of friends and I dont need one now
So baby don't you let me down

If you could just let yourself just...slip away
Don't have to think about it till some other day
Just a temporary game that we're gonna play
I say hey, what do you say

[Chorus:]
I'm not tryin' to make you feel uncomfortable
And I'm not trying to make you go away
All I really want to do is be with you
For awhile or just today
I said hey, what do you say

Is that a combination of SM's date rant combined with Brad's barking and just about any post from any of the straight men on this board?

I love Sleepyhead - but check out this mix - a friend sent me the link and said that he thought it sounded like a CoasterMatt version of a Disney parade :)

Ummmm.... I'm not sure how to answer that.

Here's a sample of the song in question

second class citizen 01-23-2009 09:06 PM

From Arno Elias' Buddha Bar, the song "Osmyo".

This cat's track transcends swank. He's got to be the most chilled out cat 'round the planet. This song sounds like something you'd play just after someone's been born...or after your pet's had a litter.

Great music for a Post-Bush World.

Check out his Art...it rocks!

katiesue 01-23-2009 09:14 PM

How uncool is it to say the new Rascal Flatts cd?

Prudence 01-23-2009 09:30 PM

I'm listening to "The Librarian" - whatever the second one is. Making the Rat watch the first two before we can watch the third.

I was just grooving to a little REM while making pies. Now backwards to a little Mother Lovebone.
