MOCA - ECSTASY In and About Altered States

As a MOCA member I got an invite to an opening of the new show at the Geffen Contemporary, ECSTASY In and about Altered States. It opens to members on Saturday, October 8, with a performance piece by Lara Favaretto, and DJ set by Sandra Collins.

To quote MOCA about the exhibit:
Quote:

An international survey of work by approximately 31 artists exploring altered states and alternative modes of perception, Ecstasy features painting, sculpture, video, film, installation, photography, and new media by some of today's leading artists as well as the most promising work by the up-and-coming generation. Ecstasy presents recent and specially commissioned works that challenge notions of interactivity while generating a heightened aural and visual experience for the individual.
But a picture is worth a 1000 words:

Carsten HöllerUpside Down Mushroom Room

I think this might be a fun one to go to, perhaps working in a Downtown LA swanking in the mix. The show runs through February 20. Post if you are interested and I'll work out the details of this one.

blueerica 10-02-2005 06:36 PM

Veddy, veddy eentadesting...

Ghoulish Delight 10-02-2005 07:50 PM

So in.

CoasterMatt 10-02-2005 08:44 PM

Wow! That looks like a place I could live...

Cadaverous Pallor 10-02-2005 10:16 PM

Duuuuude. Are you seeing this? I'm totally tripping out.

No way we'd miss this!

innerSpaceman 10-02-2005 10:31 PM

As you might imagine, I'm already arranging for the appropriate consumables for hanging out in the upside down mushroom-room.

Just say when.

€uroMeinke 10-08-2005 11:16 PM

We have become ore with the snake

Not Afraid 10-08-2005 11:18 PM

We're here a MOCA sitting on a giant snake popping pink and white pills - REALLY!

blueerica 10-09-2005 03:05 PM

"Riiiiide the snake!"

That was too cool... I'm still completely fascinated by my experience in the flashing room... I never felt so high when I wasn't at all. Completely threw me off. I hope to go again...

€uroMeinke 10-09-2005 09:29 PM

So last night Not Afraid and I decided to hit the opening with Blueerica and Tramspotter. Needless to saw we had quite a time, starting with the festive party favors:

And who could resist takng just one from this accomodating group:

No pics were allowed inside the Museum, but outside the site transformed a little patch of Downtown into an ecstatic wonderland:

But then things got a bit fuzzy:

And a colorful rain began:

And we found comfort with a snake:

And we were transformed:

And quite dilerious

Until we had to go home:

And leave the confetti behind:

As you can see here - she was telling the truth:

€uroMeinke 10-09-2005 10:03 PM

Just a bit of clarification - these pics are just from the opening party. There's a whole cool set of exhibits inside (some of which will remind you of effects from Adventures through Inner Space) that we only got a taste of last night - you never get to see the Art on opening night.

We still want to have a swank meet sometime in the not to distant future. We'll be missing the DJ, Bar, and - sniff - probably the giant plush snake, but it still promises to be quite a swanking (and we can easily combine it with other Downtown Swank venues).

So let's pick a day and plan some fun.

Not Afraid 10-09-2005 10:04 PM

I'll bring the Pink and White Drugs. ;)

Not Afraid 10-09-2005 10:10 PM

Oh, and to add to what Chris said........

Only MOCA Members were invited to the opening of the exhibition. I now see why that is the case - it was a HUGELY attended event! I think everyone should join MOCA so we can make these fun parties, er, openings, a part of our regular swankings. Think of it as a MOCA AP. ;)

Now, we need to go back so we can really see the exhibition. It was packed. We waited about 1/2 hour just to get inside the building. Some of the "environments" had looooong lines just to view.....and there was no Fast Pass. But, what we did see was really fun and interesting.

Cadaverous Pallor 10-09-2005 10:20 PM

Awesomeness! Thanks for the pics!

Ghoulish Delight 10-09-2005 10:21 PM

Awesome, what a tantalizing preview!

I vote for November 5th or 19, just to throw a couple dates out.

alphabassettgrrl 10-10-2005 01:01 PM

That looks like fun! Make it a Tuesday or a Thursday and I'm in!

Ghoulish Delight 10-10-2005 01:15 PM

D'oh. Disregard my previous vote for dates. I need to learn how to read a calender.

I've just noticed that the museum is open on Sundays. Perhaps a non-hub Sunday meet is in order.

€uroMeinke 10-10-2005 08:35 PM

Just an FYI MOCA is open late on Thursdays and is free in the evening hours.

alphabassettgrrl 10-10-2005 09:48 PM

Ooooooooohhhhhh, sounds like fun!

€uroMeinke 11-16-2005 08:21 PM

Due to the crazyness of calendars, it looks like the weekend of January 21 may be the best time to arrange a swanking for the full exhibit - so thos of you interested, please mark your calendars and let me know your interest. I'll post more as those plans firm up.

innerSpaceman 11-16-2005 08:44 PM

Ooooh, i have no plans yet for 2006 ... so this looks like a go for me.

(Um, where can I get some psychedelic drugs for the occasion?)

Ghoulish Delight 11-16-2005 10:23 PM

Ooh, and asuming CP's schedule remains as-is, she's not working that Saturday. Hooray!

Not Afraid 11-17-2005 10:02 AM

So, this also falls right before Chris' birthday. I'll have to see what kind of swank we can add on.;)

€uroMeinke 01-13-2006 10:32 PM

Thought I'd bump this one and draw your attention to this calendar entry.

On the 21st (Saturday) the museum hours are 11:00 AM to 6:00PM

There's a lot to see at this show, so I want to make sure we've got a good chunk of time to play around and absorb it all. The Geffen is also conveniently located adjacent to Little Tokyo, so I'm thinking a working a lunch or dinner into this is a must (I've been craving Udon myself)

So just to test the waters, I'd suggest a noon meet if we want to lunch first, or 2:00PM if we want to follow-up with dinner.

Ghoulish Delight 01-13-2006 10:59 PM

We're in. I like the sound of a followup dinner.

innerSpaceman 01-14-2006 09:43 AM

I like the sound of lunch and dinner.

Hmm, both lunch and dinner....maybe a lunch at the museum cafeteria? What's that like? I have no idea what it's like there...

Alas there is no cafeteria at the Geffen Contemporary - however, we are in the heart of LA - so I'm sure we can come up with something nearby. I've been wanting to try Café Metropol, which might make for a good lunch venue. Pete's Café might be another option.

Not Afraid 01-14-2006 07:07 PM

By the Way.........

We are more than likely going to be taking the Metro up and, if I have my way, spend some time in either Olvera St. or in the shops of Little Tokyo. Anyone is welcome to join us for some free-form 'sploring.

LSPoorEeyorick 01-14-2006 09:00 PM

Ooh! Time for a little weekend Metroing!

CoasterMatt 01-14-2006 09:01 PM

Alas, I'll be at Universal with my mom and dad (celebrating his birthday)

alphabassettgrrl 01-16-2006 09:34 PM

What Metro line is the museum on? What stop do I get off? I have confidence I can navigate the Metro system now. Might be able to make it. :)

€uroMeinke 01-17-2006 12:08 AM

Red line - it's about 2 blocks from Union Station on the other side of the freeway - or just down the street (2-3 blocks) from the Civic Center.

LSPoorEeyorick 01-18-2006 07:28 PM

As Ranger Autobon J. Woodlore would say, "first you stick a rag, put it in the bag..."

BUMP BUMP.

Not Afraid 01-19-2006 12:04 PM

OK. What do we need here? Times? Specific places? Cell phone numbers?

ok. Times!!!

1:00 - Lunch at Café Metropol,

2:30 - Meet at MOCA at the Geffin Contemporary

6:00 ish - Dinner and exploration in Little Tokyo

There are lots off of Alameda that are central and walkable. I would recommend those for parking. But, it's all close for walking.

Nobody walks in LA. Feh!

alphabassettgrrl 01-19-2006 03:53 PM

Sounds like fun! I still don't know if hubby and I can go, but I'm going to try!

Not Afraid 01-21-2006 11:52 AM

SOOOOOOOOOOO........

Review for today and some updates.

1:00 Cafe Metropole.

Cafe Metropole is next door to R23 which happens to have a nice web site with a map. MOCA and the GC is at 1st and Alameda, NW quadrant. Parking option is on the other side of Alameda. The restaurant is just a few block away - easy walking distance. Go to the R23 site and click on Directions.

We're planning on getting to MOCA at about 2:30 if you only want to join us then. I would call one of us though.

See you there!

€uroMeinke 01-23-2006 03:59 PM

So the swanking was a blast, and I hope Zapppop shares his secret pics, but one of the pics I took tells a follow-up tale from the opening we went to:

Yes, all these moths laer and confetti from the event can still be found outside the Museum. I was of course amused to see the set-up of confetti canons and piles of confettie that they moved into the entrance, but seeing it still in the streets, and also in neighboring Little Tokyo brought a smile to my face - Confetti is Forver.
